Mash and his friends face their toughest challenge yet, and they get some able support from the Divine Visionaries! That should be a good opening act for the main event with Mash.
MASHLE: Magic and Muscles is a manga series that will leave you spellbound! Published in Shonen Jump, this series follows the story of Mash Burnedead, a magicless protagonist in a world full of magic. The manga is a comedy with a vibe akin to a mashup of One Punch Man and Harry Potter. The story is set in a world where magic is everything, and those who don’t possess it are considered weak. Mash, however, is an exception to this rule. He has no magical abilities but makes up for it with his incredible physical strength. The series is known for its unique blend of humor, action, and fantasy elements, making it a must-read for fans of the genre. The series has been praised for its engaging storyline, well-developed characters, and stunning artwork. It has also been adapted into an anime series, which has been well-received by fans.
MASHLE: Magic and Muscles is a hilarious and action-packed manga that is sure to delight fans of shonen manga. The series features a lovable cast of characters, epic battles, and plenty of humor. If you're looking for fun and entertaining read, MASHLE is worth checking out!
The Dark Tournament vibes are REAL in this one. And it comes off like a loving tribute and not a full blown copy cat. Yu Yu Hakusho fans will understand when they read it. Aaaaa what a vibe!!!
He's baaaaaaaack! (I mean Ryoh, but I guess Mash as well.)
As Mash finishes up healing at the Meliadoul's key, his friends and the remaining Divine Visionaries face off against Doom, the remaining son of Innocent Zero. They're all spent from fighting the other sons, but it's the last obstacle they have to face before getting to Innocent Zero himself. He's been the biggest challenge so far, and he was able to defeat Mash earlier in the series while only being at half of his power, and I thought this fight was a good way to double back on him and see what he was really capable of doing. In general, I thought the rapid-fire fights between all five sons that we have seen over the last several volumes has been a lot of fun, and it was certainly my favorite arc of the series. As much as I can't wait to see the final face-off against Innocent Zero, I did enjoy the fights with the sons, not just because they were well written and dynamic, but because I liked how we got to see the supporting characters take the lead.
Most of this volume showed Mash's allies fighting Doom one after the other, first Rayne and Finn, the Orter, then Ryoh finally getting a go at it. I think part of the reason I liked this long fight was so much was because I saw my three favorite characters take the lead back to back. While all of this was happening, periodically it would cut back to the crew at Meliadoul's place trying, and failing, to turn the crank. The fighting was fun, but them struggling over the crank was honestly even better.
I loved seeing more of Finn and Rayne teaming up together, and I think that one of the reasons why I like them together so much is because they seem to instinctually know what the other needs. I would assume that this is the first time the two of them have really teamed up magically, but they barely need to speak to be able to know what to do. But between their types of magic, the spike in their powers, and Finn's healing magic, they're a very smart duo. And I don't know how I didn't notice this before, but know I see that the two of them have matching marks, which seems kind of obvious in hindsight.
Of COURSE Ryoh was also perfect, and I loved his section so much. Part of me wonders why it took him so long to even find Doom, with the rest of his friends already there exhausted from two fights each, and he's unscathed. But he's just that cool that I guess he was saved for the end so we could see more of him in his full glory. I love his determination and raw power, even though arguably I think Rayne may have the most raw power of any Divine Visionary seeing as he can actually get to three lines and was the apparent youngest to do it. And even though he acts cocky, it is really just because he's that good. Maybe I just have a soft spot for really sassy characters who have a heart of gold inside. But regardless, I loved how the mood shifted as Ryoh got more and more beat up, and I was quite concerned that he might actually be killed off. Just the way at the end he collapsed, unable to say a spell, was so powerful.
One thing that I wish was more prevalent in this series are character deaths. Nobody ever seems to truly die, they just get really beat up. I do really appreciate when this happens, but just from doing a bit of research it seems that most of the characters end up surviving, excpet for maybe a few of the villains. I really loved how gruesome it was when we saw some of the Divine Visionaries crucified or when Domina brought in the broken wands from the Saint Ars competitors because it showed just how dangerous this world is, and how far people will go to get power in this broken system. Obviously we know people get killed fairly regularly because half the characters in this series are motivated by the death of some person from their past, but no one we've really SEEN has died. I just think a few character deaths, even from very minor characters, would raise the stakes of this series considerably. As I mentioned before, there are a lot of moments where things get incredibly dark, and I love how Komoto isn't afraid of doing that, but then when everyone comes out unscathed it makes the whole thing feel pointless. Of course, I'm glad .
I also thought it was interesting how Doom would get larger and bulkier with each increase in his power, although I sometimes felt that his exact proportions weren't always consistent between panels. But it was still a cool design choice which made him an unique opponent. In fact, his abilities, and his circumstances in general, reminded me a bit of the fight against Abyss Razor which is QUITE the throwback at this point. (What volume was that in? Three?)
And then of course there was him. Even though I've loved the focus on the other characters, it still felt great to see Mash back in action. His entrance: from Finn getting the call from Kaldo (on Rayne's bunny phone lol) saying that he's coming back, to his echoing footsteps, to the fact that he really has become One Punch Man for real, it was great. It was exactly what you would expect from something like this, and even though there was nothing in it that was out of the ordinary, I still loved it.
Absolute chills. It's such a simple spread, but it really hit me hard, and this very well might be my single favorite panel so far.
I'm still struggling with what to rate this, because it was GREAT, but it also had a lot of typical Mashle fight mechanics that stop it from really standing out from the crowd. It was great don't get me wrong, but we've seen a lot of this stuff before, and it was full of the typical monologuing that is always present. Five stars seems a bit too generous, and even if I gave it five stars it wouldn't be as good as the other ones I gave the same rating. To be fair the last few volumes were SO GOOD that I had very high expectations going into it. You know what? I WILL bump this up to five stars, especially now that I'm writing this review and really thinking about what I liked about this volume. It was just very tough, all my favorite characters fought their asses off, Mash is back, and we're about to reach the final boss. This series has been a blast, and it really does deserve a lot of love.["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>
It's pretty cool that the entire volume focuses on fights against Doom, showing how strong he is that none of the guys can hurt him too badly before Mash shows up, but... I don't know, sometimes it felt like it wasn't completely deserving of what Komoto-sensei probably considered as "hype." Like, Doom is just Younger Toguro from YYH, but with a big sword. So we already saw a similar effort thirty years ago, and that was Yusuke taking on Toguro alone. The struggle here doesn't really compare, since it's mostly a volume of holding off Doom until Mash can arrive at the end. And we don't even see Mash win yet, so... uh, in a way, the whole volume feels like "filler," kind of. Or, like, I can't praise this volume too highly if I've elsewhere called the Culling Game from JJK "boring."

This might be one of the few books I give a 5-star rating and yet I don't want to speak too much about. This volume is a long time coming in the series and pays off all the feelings you want it to! Hajime Komoto seemingly never planned for the series to go as long as it has...but I believe everyone reading will be so happy he did because this volume has all the feelings of Naruto arriving at the leaf village to face Pain and Goku arriving to face Vegeta! This is the payoff given for the last few volumes. MUST READ if you like, love or crave this series!
With Dot and Lance beaten, Finn combines his power with Rayne and Orter to battle Doom, but even their united front does little to shatter his defenses - until the arrival of Ryoh turns the tide, his light promising to finally bring Innocent Zero's eldest down...so long as his light isn't snuffed out. Komoto brings another action-packed entry, every panel brimming with energy and heart. Who is Doom in the shadow of the Ryou Grantz?
Wow, I'm catching up to the current volume with so many series right now. This is the last Mashle I can binge for now. Letting the waiting for volume 16 commence.
Glad to see that Mash is back in action, even if it was only at the end of this volume. I'm excited to read the next one, but bummed I have to wait.
To absolutely no one's surprise the stakes are raised with each fight, the odds look bad for our heroes and something spectacular happens near the very end. I will say that watching the brothers Layne and Rayne get to fight together was something and the 4th brother fighting everyone was more interesting that it should have been.
Drawn Out Build Up and Quick Start for the Next One
To me it's one thing when a story is building and character development but we are getting to the equivalent of anime shows where it's four episodes for one fight and then the fifth episode the real final fight begins. I'm leaning toward 4 but really a 3.75.
Doom is undefeatable despite being blind and his large form kinda looks like Toguro from Ghost Fighter. Thankfully, Mash is fully recovered from his training and he's ready to fight his oldest brother. I'm glad Mash appears again and I know he can win using his first/muscles.
Loved this! In this volume we get to see Orter, Rayne, and others come together to try and defeat Innocence Zero’s eldest son. The fight scenes were great and just seeing different characters work together was really nice.
As always, reading this manga instantly lifts my mood and makes my day better! Thank you Komoto for creating this story.
Light mage you are amazinnggg you earned your handsome respect with yoyr humanity, nice that doom isn't down, nice the progression, nice the seriousness in mash eyes, i like how this story keeps you going in one go
El hermano mayor está muy petado. Espero que alguien la palme porque sino es muy poco realista después de llevar todos dos batallas. MASH POR FIN APARECE.
4.25/5 This volume really feels like we are moving toward the climax of the series. I'm excited to have Mash back as his presence has been sorely missed. He's the true heart of this series.
This has become more of a standard battle series at this point. I definitely prefer it when it's more focused on comedy. It doesn't help that the main character was barely in this volume at all.
