Julia Clara Catharine Dolores Birk Olsen Hitchens, better known as Dolores Hitchens, was an American mystery novelist who wrote prolifically from 1938 until her death. She also wrote under the pseudonyms D.B. Olsen, Dolan Birkley and Noel Burke.

Hitchens collaborated on five railroad mysteries with her second husband, Bert Hitchens, a railroad detective, and also branched out into other genres in her writing, including Western stories. Many of her mystery novels centered around a spinster character named Rachel Murdock.

Hitchens wrote Fool's Gold, the 1958 novel adapted by Jean-Luc Godard for his film Bande à part (Band of Outsiders, 1964).

I love Dolores Hitchens so much. This one has a satisfying mystery and a puppy. Again (like Stairway to an Empty Room), the story revolves around non cops, non professionals. I love that. From 1952.

Wow, một câu chuyện cực kì hồi hộp, gay cấn... Điều khiến mình ngạc nhiên nhất là dù đây là một truyện dài trinh thám cổ điển nhưng lại có sự hài hoà giữa tình tiết truyện gay cấn và sự phát triển trong tâm lý nhân vật. Nữ chính Amy trong đau thương và sự căm thù bất công muốn rửa sạch tên tuổi của chồng mình không ngại nguy hiểm lao vào công cuộc trả thù, đi tìm mọi bằng chứng để lật tẩy kẻ xấu cuối cùng. Đó là một con đường đơn độc, đầy hiểm nguy khi xung quanh cô không có một người bạn hay một đồng minh vững chắc nào có thể tin tưởng được. Ai ai cũng nghĩ rằng chồng cô là cớm bẩn. Chính vì sự vấy bẩn tên tuổi chồng mà Amy liều lĩnh dấn thân vào con đường trả thù đầy hiểm nguy, một mình cô chinh chiến, nhưng không hềmù quáng mà luôn bình tĩnh, giữ một cái đầu lạnh. Nhân vật anh nhà báo Forgaty mới đầu xuất hiện tạo cảm giác như một anh chàng chỉ lợi dụng đi moi tin nhưng càng về sau mình càng thấy được lòng quan tâm của Forgaty tới Amy, lo lắng cho sự an nguy của cô và thậm chí còn khuyên bảo cô tỉnh táo những khi cô đi quá giới hạn.
Và đó chính là điểm bước ngoặt trong tâm lý nhân vật Amy. Cô thực sự đã đi quá giới hạn, bỏ qua những cảnh báo mà cứ đăm đăm đâm đầu vào cái kế hoạch trả thù điên cuồng, quên đi những người vô tội có thể bị liên đới.
Kết truyện tiết lộ thủ phạm khá là bất ngờ. Truyện cài cắm tương đối nhiều tình tiết, dù vô cùng gay cấn, nhưng cũng làm mình khá đau đầu khi cố gắng nhìn nhận lại vụ việc từ đầu đến cuối. Phải có lời giải thích tường trình lại toàn bộ thì mình mới gỡ rối từng chi tiết và tổng hợp lại soi tỏ vấn đề.
Truyện đầy đủ các yếu tố mà một mọt trinh thám sẽ yêu thích: kịch tính, logic, tình tiết lắt léo, thủ đoạn, các nhân vật không đáng tin, tâm lý nhân vật sâu sắc và một cái kết hợp lý, bất ngờ.

Hitchens's two (or is it three) Jim Sader detective novels are pretty good, IIRC (it's been many years since I read them). This earlier novel is not so good, though it has its moments. Recently widowed Amy Luttrell looks to solve her cop husband's murder and clear his name. Too much clunky plotting and gimmicks, but hints that Hitchens will do better later.

True "Hardboiled" writing.

A tension filled, fast paced read. The action starts on the first two pages and doesn't let up until the last two pages. Not a typical detective story, the main character is a policeman's widow, who will not stop searching for the truth, no matter the cost.

Bought this on a lark at a used book store in Maine. But instead of an old-fashioned "pulp", I found it to be a really well written mystery, with a plot that's far more nuanced and complicated than any mystery I've read from the past 10 years or so.
