This battle shall reach its inevitable conclusion -- and the final triumph will belong to Doctor Undying!
I changed the face of the world, creating a paradise for superhumans. All it took was throwing a fight and spending forty years in jail. That was a small price to pay as an immortal. But now that I’m out on parole, I fully intend on enjoying the world I created.
When the parole board stuck me in a scared straight mentorship program, I decided to turn the tables against them. I would teach the two beautiful, badass women in my care not to be repentant heroes or good citizens, but instead, I would help them become true supervillains. Under my tutelage, I would see them rise to become world-shaking terrors!
Of course, no plans go off without a hitch. Some fool decided to steal my archive of mad doomsday weapons and turn them against me. But no matter! With my villainesses beside me, I will strike horrible vengeance upon them.
Let the world tremble, for Doctor Undying has returned!
a 3 star book that didn't tick me off This book is mostly meh'. It's not bad... But I read most of the other books it got it's 'inspiration' from. This is a rehash of many other super villain books with little new of it's own to contribute. By the way, I skipped all the sex scenes. They kinda come out of nowhere from the mood of the story, they appear at the appointed time in the book whether anyone is in the mood or not. Thankfully when they appear, they go all the way to the end of that chapter so just skip ahead to the next chapter with out missing any story. So M.E. Thorne... I really liked I Don't Want to Be the Hero Vol. 1. I thought I'd found a new author to follow. But then I Don't Want to Be the Hero turned into an annoying, and repetitive drag. Dungeon Delving for Loot and Levels made me so damn mad, It's a brilliant idea done so badly that it should be taken away by child protective services. So this was M.E. Thornes last chance. 2 outs and no runners on base. I wasn't expecting much and got more than I expected. For M.E. Thorne meh' isn't bad. Seriously though Dungeon Delving for Loot and Levels was a god damn travesty. How could you screw up an idea so good? and screw it so badly?
My ratings on harem books are always really good or really bad.
I only have two criteria. A capable or driven MC, and harem members with well defined personalities. That's it. The setting, the goals, the action is all just fluff and filler. This was on its way to being a five star, but the MC never had a good showing. For a super villain evil genius, he was middling at best. He never impressed and his only real contribution was wealth. He was urbane and witty, in that way he was very well written. But his actions were unimpressive. Still a fun read, but it missed out on being a great read.
First off, the prose is great. The book is well written. Could have used slightly better proofreading, but still good.
Second, it's funny - at times even laugh out lout funny. And in addition the characters are interesting and well rendered. The primary characters actually distinct personalities, and aren't just two dimensional cliches.
The setting is...fine. A lot of books play around with the idea of superpowers arising, and this book takes what I think is the right position, which is to try not to overanalyse it. There are superpowers, some people can fly, or have super strength, or can throw fireballs, and the world and society are different than our own as a result, but rather than try and come up with some elaborate framework to explain it all, it's just there. The protagonist even lampshades this at one point, noting that he doesn't believe in magic and is pretty sure there's a scientific basis for everything, but can't quite figure out how. So props there too.
But none of that's what I liked most about the book, which is what drives the conflict. Now, obviously any story (beyond some cozy slice-of-life tale) needs conflict. Good versus evil is a classic, but "evil" is hard to render convincingly because very few people actually wake up, twirl their mustaches, and then leap eagerly into a day of tying damsels to railroad tracks. Rendering a realistic, sympathetic "bad guy" is a difficult challenge, and I enjoy seeing different approaches.
And here the result is actually...really good? The protagonist is very proudly a villain, but he has a very distinct (and pursuasive) view of what that means. He's a very moral person, and absolutely thinks he's doing the right thing, just with a very slightly different viewpoint than the "heroes".
So yeah, well written, funny, good characters, a setting that doesn't immedialy break my suspension of disbelief, and with an interesting message buried under all the rediculous comic book violence and sex. Not bad, not bad at all.
I am, admittedly, not the target audience for this book. The title grabbed my attention; I really should have paid more attention to the subtitle.
The story was surprisingly entertaining, even if the MC was a jerk (and not necessarily for the reasons the author intended). The book could have used another going-over by a proof-reader as there were lots of distracting spelling and grammar errors, like 'wagged' instead of 'waged' or 'an' instead of 'and.'
Even though the book is aimed at a male audience, the machismo was only slightly higher than many other contemporary sci-fi/fantasy books, which says more about the state of the genre than about the author, I think.
The villains were fun, the women had agency and used their powers well, and it was honestly nice seeing so many women in the cast of characters. There was, however, only one likeable male character, who we don't actually meet (the Green Phoenix). I don't think I will seek out the sequel but I read all the way to the end, and I have no qualms about abandoning books I'm not enjoying, so that earns the book a solid 3 stars.
At my request I received a copy of this audiobook in order to give a fair and unbiased review.
Genre: Immortal super villain Scifi harem Power dynamics in harem: The MC is desired, respected and deferred to by his girls, so he calls the shots. Explicit/adult material: Explicit.
Summary: Immortal and previously the supervillain leading the para-human rebellion, Doctor Undying is up for parole. When one of the terms of his release is mentoring young early-criminals back to the path of virtue our dear doctor has his own plans for the direction of his mentoring. As he is mentoring his 2 hot, smart protegees towards a not-so-legal path his past comes back to mess with him.
Narration Voice diversity: Good. Characters are easy to recognise from their voice. Pacing and intonation: Where the narration really shines. The storytelling is superb. Sex scenes: Well done. Matt Hicks is becoming my favourite male narrator and Erin Bateman is a seasoned narrator and it shows. Overall Narration: 5/5 stars.
The book’s strengths. - The premise of a villain mastermind that is not evil-insane, but "make the hard choices" morally grey - The premise of an extremely powerful MC who helps his harem grow - The attraction from the girls to the MC feels natural and though it progresses fast it makes sense - The writing is fun and has many cool references throughout. - The narration
The book’s weaknesses. - Could also be considered a strength: A lot of girls (5) are introduced already in the first book. They are not all harem yet, and they are all very different. But for me that is too fast.
What do you do when you have all the time in the world? Apparently you go to prison for 40 years to advance one of your villainous schemes. A fun book about a 'has been' super villain making his way in the world after his parole. Oh, he still has all of his villainous infrastructure, and his most loyal henchperson. His arch nemesis comes calling, and he can't quite recall them. Very embarrassing, for the nemesis at least. But you can't live for centuries without making a few enemies. Be warned: Harem lit, mediocre adult content (imagine Letters to Penthouse, "Dear Penthouse, I never thought it would happen to me") I'm hoping that a second book comes out, but I'm not seeing one at this time. Tom out
Most supervillain novels I've read are afraid to make their main characters true villains, instead they tend to come off as misunderstood heroes, but this wasn't the case for this book! In this one the mc was unapologetically villainous, having a grand goal greater than himself and willing to do absolutely anything to make that goal a reality, no matter the cost, even if the cost is decades of his life rotting in jail. By truly revelling in the mc being a villian the author made a story that was incredibly fun and interesting to read. I honestly can't wait for a sequel!
I love the setting and found the characters to be a wonderful group. Easy to follow and full of potential. The world is interesting and the action was good. I look forward to finding out more about both world and persons good and bad but what's evil spelled backwards.... Taken from the movie Rock and Rule it is worth a watch if you have not seen it iggie pop as the villain and his three bench men are a true classic from the 80 Canadian anime movie lol. Thank you for your hard work, I look forward to reading more.
I've always found the story and ideas from an anti-hero or villain perspective to be far more entertaining than that of a heroes.
And M E Thorne has produced a brilliant, witty and funny story with a character who isn't super strong, smart or fast, but immortal... Someone who does the hard work and excels at being a Supervillain.
The characters are fun, the story well written and kept me hooked. Looking forward to seeing more!
A pretty good example of the genre (superhero harem, I guess) but not outstanding. The MC I could mostly get behind, more pragmatic than evil, and the limited harem in book one makes sense in context.
That gets you a 4. A 5 requires more, and I found this fell short. This is volume 1, but I feel no burning need to read book 2 which is probably an easy metric to measure that 1-point gap. I'm not saying I won't, but there are other things which would bump it down the queue.
What a truly unique perspective of the super human genre!!! You will definitely laugh and cheer during the MCs journey in the grey zone of this world!!! Ithe author for me portrays where most of humanity lives in the grey zone of reality, neither evil nor purely good but walking the fine line between!!!! I can't wit to see wht comes next!!!!
I'm picky with superheros/villains and this was great
I very much feel worn out with the superhero genre, but this was solid. Quality speaks for itself. A main character that walks a fine but solid moral line and a great crew of ladies that are unique and intriguing. I'll snatch up a sequel the moment it's available.
This book is up front with what you’re getting, harem romance, but it’s far better than others in this category. This story is complete super hero action adventure. Characters are good and developed far beyond what you’ve come to expect from others in the genre. Plus, cover art is sweet
This was a fun fast-paced read. It was nice to see a villain who had no aspirations to be anything else. I didn’t realize this was a “harem lit” novel, nor did I even know such a thing existed, so I was a bit surprised by how explicit it got at times. Definitely threw me off a bit, and frankly it wasn’t necessary. I still had fun with the book as a whole, though
This book conforms well to villain aesthetics, there's a love for the flamboyancy and drama, the schemes and plots, and I'm here for it. Additionally the protagonist isn't simply evil, he's an idealist with a dream that he simply happens to be quite willing to stretch ethics for. Plus the romance is fun, if a bit quickly developed.
An awesome story and as ME Throne says in the forward, superheroes and smut, what could be greater? And it was a truly great story with an awesome cast and fun storyline. Looking forward to the next entry.
This one was killer, loved the characters and the story line! Eris is gonna turn!!! And Green Phoenix will rise again!!!! Long live Cassiopeia!!!! May she win the cupcake!!!!
No Heroics for me it’s the Supervillain life for me.
The novel truly did fill like a comic writen in novel format of a sliver age type that with the author talking about the influence for the story it made over look it’s werid complex story connections that becomes a joyful read.
I didn't know what to expect with a super Villian as the main lead but this story was great, well written, great plot and fantastic characters well worth the read you will enjoy this story I look forward to next book
Think of this story as a comic book villian giving his version of events. The good doctor has lived a long time and has much to teach his new super paramours about being excellent villains. Adult humor and action. A great read for comic book fans
Very good. Cheesy 80s heroes and villains and an immortal MC who has seen it all is the perfect recipe for awesomeness. The characters are unique and interesting, the plot is action-packed, the pacing is perfect, the spice solid, the grammar good. All good, 5 stars.
The characters were great and the story was fun and exciting, hopeful that what I’m thinking will come in the future happens and can’t wait to read more :)
This book is It's so immaturely written that it's pathetic do not waste your time I couldn't even I couldn't even get through half of it before I finally had to stop.
