"Page-turning action combines with depth and richness to create a full-bodied, rewarding read." --Jocelyn Green, Christy Award-winning author of The Metropolitan Affair
As matron of Final Chance House of Refuge, Gwendolyn Ellison has dedicated her life to serving the children deemed delinquents by society. She'll protect them with everything she has. So when she suspects someone is using Final Chance for criminal deeds, she's determined to investigate and put a stop to it. But villains don't like to be crossed--and they're willing to kill to get their way.
Gwendolyn knows she can't quit fighting. More than her own life is on the line if counterfeiters go free. She must find someone she can trust to help her expose the criminals and protect the children under her care.
Charming and chivalrous Secret Service operative Josiah Isaacs has never been able to turn his back on a woman in trouble--and capturing counterfeiters is his job, after all. The danger he's truly worried about is his growing attraction to Gwendolyn when his heart wants to remain faithful to his deceased wife.
As both peril and interest grow, he begins to consider whether a second love may be possible--if they can live through this case. At the same time, he's put off by her faith in a God he no longer trusts. How can a future together even be possible when their beliefs are at odds?
"Readers who love romance, suspense, and a graceful amount of faith won't want to miss this story." --Toni Shiloh, Christy Award-winning author
"With a host of sympathetic and likable characters (and a few not so likable), a riveting plot that clips along at the perfect pace, and a relatable faith thread, this book [is a] completely enjoyable read." --Kimberly Duffy, Carol Award finalist and author of A Tapestry of Light
Crystal Caudill is the author of “dangerously good historical romance,” with her work garnering awards from Romance Writers of America and ACFW. She is a stay-at-home mom and caregiver, and when she isn’t writing, Crystal can be found playing board games with her family, drinking hot tea, or reading other great books at her home outside Cincinnati, Ohio. Find out more at crystalcaudill.com.
This series has been perfection from book one and it just keeps getting better! Caudill creates characters that are easy to love, and Josiah and Gwendolyn are among my favorites. The unique history (Gilded Age! counterfeiters! houses of refuge! the Secret Service!), the toe-curling romance, the witty and heartfelt dialogue, the edge-of-your-seat suspense, and the organic faith threads beckon readers to become immersed in this compelling story. If you have ever struggled to trust God, if you've ever echoed the Gospel prayer of "Help my unbelief", then you will find your heart at home on these pages - at home, but not unchanged. Another fabulously entertaining and grace-filled offering from Crystal Caudill!
Oh. My. Goodness. I finished this book in tears. Not sad tears, but tears because the ending is just so beautiful. I'm not sure what else to say; I'm still wrapped up in the story.
I'm so sad to see this series end. I'd love to see where the lives of these precious people lead. But since everything has to come to a close at some point, this book was the perfect way to do it. I have loved watching each of these Secret Service agents serve their country and find their mates. I can't even pick a favorite book in this trilogy because I have been enamored with each of them.
Well done, Crystal Caudill. Well done. I look forward to seeing what you come up with next.
A masterful blend of romance, intrigue, and history. From the first line of the novel, readers will engage with compelling characters forging paths through danger and lies to find their way to true faith, hope, and love. Page-turning action combines with depth and richness to create a full-bodied, rewarding read. After such a stirring conclusion to this series, I can’t wait to see what Crystal writes next!
With an unfailing, solid faith thread, Ms. Caudill tells a story of love blooming in the face of adversity. Secret Service Agent Josiah Isaacs is investigating Final Chance House of Refuge for possible connection to counterfeiting. Gwendolyn is matron of Final Chance and has her hands full and suspects abuse is going on with the boys side of the refuge. But her faith is evident in the way she treats her charges and recites a constant prayer: “ Help Thou my unbelief.” I was also pleased to see my favorite verse Romans 8: 38 & 39 which tells that nothing can separate us from the love of Christ. Gwendolyn helps Josiah along on his spiritual journey with the words: “It is not our doubt that defines our faith. Faith redefines our doubts.” This is a layered story that gives lessons along with entertainment, there is historical information, a romance, and an exciting and dangerous mystery to solve, as well as family drama, forgiveness and compassion. This is a worthy end to the series by an accomplished author. * I received a complimentary copy of this book from Kregel on behalf of the author. I was not required to post a favorable review. All opinions are my own.*
I have immensely enjoyed this entire series by debut author Crystal Caudill. She has something special here and I would encourage all lovers of Christian historical fiction to read these. Not only does she present a compelling, suspenseful mystery, the Biblical message and theme of each book has a way of reaching into your heart and ministering to you spiritually. The books deal with difficult issues with such tact and class. The plot pulls you right in and keeps you on your toes until the last page. I loved the twists and turns, the sweet romance between the characters, the emotional struggles each character brought to the page, and the way they allow God to bring them out and bring them together. Each book can be read as a stand-alone, but I highly recommend reading them in order as a trilogy. Previous main characters appear as minor characters in the next book, so it’s more fascinating if you know their backstories as you go. Looking forward to what’s next from Caudill. Her books have become some of my must reads.
Counterfeit Faith contains an interesting plot, lovable characters, and odious villains who'll make you want to clobber them with Red (if you know, you know). I especially enjoyed the research that went into this book. The historical Secret Service and Pinkerton agencies have always intrigued me.
PLOT The plot is Christian historical romance mixed with suspense. I don't usually read suspense, and I've certainly never heard of it mixed with Christian historical romance before, so I was holding my breath as I read. These poor characters! I dare say my heart still hasn't quite recovered yet.
CHARACTERS Gwendolyn has the prettiest name, and I liked how Caudill made her a strong female character, but not a feminist. Josiah is a solid MMC and I liked his character arc.
The kids were adorable, I want Wilhelmina's story (pretty please), and other characters like Mrs. Flowers made me laugh. I still have mixed feelings on Mrs. Issacs, though. Hopefully she'll eventually come fully around.
FAITH This book had plenty of faith, and I loved it. I mentioned Josiah's character arc, and this was where he really grew.
There are plenty of prayers, characters attend church and mass, and God's will and timing are reflected upon. This looks like a short list, but there is a ton of faith packed in this book.
ROMANCE Completely clean and sweet, just the way I like it. Characters kiss once.
CONTENT WARNING An opiate addiction is discussed, characters are injured by the nasties, characters are cut, kicked, beaten, and battered, there is a counterfeit ring, and there's a brief mention of a young man raping two women, who are then forced to become prostitutes.
Caudill handles everything with tact and nongratuitous references. Nothing was improper and everything is tastefully addressed.
CONCLUSION Counterfeit Faith is a book I believe all fans of Christian historical romance and suspense will enjoy, and I recommend it to everyone seeking clean romance with plenty of faith.
*I receive a copy of this book from the publisher in conjunction with JustRead. The opinions expressed are my own.
Absolutely loved this third book in the Hidden Hearts of the Gilded Age series! Crystal Caudill weaves a faith-filled, action-packed, swoon worthy second chance romance with a compelling mystery that kept me hurriedly turning those pages. I loved Josiah Isaacs in previous books and couldn’t wait for this perceived rogue’s story. It’s everything I hoped for and more.
Gwendolyn Ellison is the caring matron for the Final Chance House of Refuge who’s valiantly dedicated to the children placed there. When she suspects someone is using the refuge for an underhanded purpose, she tries to investigate. Unfortunately, the criminals involved have a great scheme going and threaten to kill anyone who gets in their way. Will she put her trust in God and the handsome Secret Service agent she can’t get out of her heart? Or, will she let past disappointments ruin her chance for happiness?
Josiah is a Secret Service agent trying to root out a “green goods game” involving counterfeit money. When he saves a lovely woman in distress, he can’t resist wanting to help her. Though he wants to remain faithful to his dead wife’s memory, he’s drawn to Gwendolyn. As he tries to protect her and the children she cares for, he must grapple with his own faith and loss. Is he willing to risk love again even if he might lose the woman he’s come to care for?
I loved Josiah and Gwen! Josiah’s good looks and charming personality have often gotten him into trouble, especially when his desire to rescue damsels in distress has resulted in nine failed proposals. I loved watching him fall in love with Gwendolyn. Gwen is beautiful, strong, and fearless. She’s willing to do whatever it takes to protect the children she loves. I throughly enjoyed the back and forth banter between Gwen & Josiah. His roguish impetuous ways are so endearing. I loved how Gwen made him wait to make sure his feelings were real. Both characters struggle with faith and trusting in God. I loved the repeated message of “help thou my unbelief.”
Loved the mystery and suspense! The villains are particularly nasty. There were times I was on the edge of my seat as Gwen constantly puts herself in dangerous situations while trying to get evidence. One of my favorite scenes was when she was forced to hurriedly hide under the bed.
The author always weaves a fascinating bit of history in with each of her stories. I enjoyed learning more about the Houses of Refuge, the “green goods game” scheme, and the Secret Service.
Highly recommend this well written, suspense-filled, inspirational romance! While it’s the third book in the series, it can definitely be read as a standalone. I received an advanced complimentary copy from the author and publisher. All opinions are completely my own and left voluntarily.
Counterfeit Faith is the third book in the Hidden Hearts of the Gilded Age series. It can easily be read as a stand-alone novel. Counterfeit Faith gives us fascinating insight into houses of refuge, counterfeits, and the green goods game (con) that was going on in the late 1800s. Gwendolyn is the matron of the Final Chance House of Refuge. She loves the children, and everything is going well until she stumbles across abuse in the boy's ward. Josiah is not looking for romance. He is looking for a counterfeit ring. His search leads him to the Final Chance House of Refuge, and he wonders if Gwendolyn has anything to do with the counterfeiting. As things heat up, Josiah and Gwendolyn form an unlikely alliance to keep the children safe and sort out what is going on. There is a lot of action, suspense, historical details, and romance, literally something for everyone. This story is well-written, with a well-developed plot. It is a satisfying conclusion to the series. Thank you to JustReads Publicity and the author for the opportunity to read this book. I was not required to provide a positive review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Wow, that was quite a story! It was intriguing, hard to put down, and entertaining. But there was a great deal more to it than the usual surface 'good story' value that was unexpected but very welcome.
I actually started Counterfeit Faith with high hopes as I had loved the first Hidden Hearts Of The Gilded Age book so much. And, I am most pleased to say that this third book, I somehow accidentally missed reading book two, turned out to be every bit as good book one.
The characters were just as delightful or dastardly depending on which side they happened to fall on. The Gilded Age setting came to life quite vividly in Crystal Caudill's capable hands. And the fact that it was a romantic suspense novel cleverly wrapped up in a historical romance made it all the more enjoyable for me as I am a fan of both genres.
However, as much as I liked being entertained by an excellent story it the line where the title of the book was explained really resonated with me in a way I hadn't anticipated. I really can't explain it any better than that as I wouldn't want any spoilers. You really have to read that very moving line for yourself and let yourself ponder it for awhile.
So, Counterfeit Faith, it was a great read and well worth the time spent within its pages. Now that I have read two of the three Hidden Hearts Of The Gilded Age titles I am really going to have to go back and read the second book. Once you get a taste of Crystal Caudill's first-rate fiction you won't want to miss a single one...
(I received a copy of this book from the author/publisher. All opinions are entirely my own.)
Counterfeit Faith had me engaged with the storyline and characters within the first few pages. Gwendolyn Ellison is a matron over the girls at the Final Chance House of Refuge. As she cares for the children she finds herself in a precarious position that can threaten her job and her life. She will go to no end to keep the children safe. When Secret Service operative, Josiah Isaacs crosses her path, things become even more problematic.
It is a historical fiction filled with intrigue, mystery, and suspense. The main characters are courageous enduring, and willing to endure whatever to save the ones they love.
The plot is exciting and will have you on the edge of your seat, wondering what will happen next and whether faith will see them through. An entertaining and faith-filled story from a gifted writer. Highly recommended.
I received a complimentary copy from the publisher and willingly choose to review it.
This is a new series for me although it is the third in the series. I didn't find this a problem as it worked well as a standalone. The characters were very likeable with t being opposite's attract, dastardly villains and the historic details of Philadelphia were interesting as well. The only negative was it was quite heavy on the faith side of things. I don't have a problem with this as long as I don't feel it was forced on me this was a little borderline. However I enjoyed it enough to look up the earlier books to read as I do love some mystery with my romance. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Crystal Caudill wraps up her Hidden Hearts of the Gilded Age series with a tale of an efficient woman with a heart for forgotten children and a secret service agent bent on protecting women. Counterfeit Faith is a fantastic way for this series to end.
Gwendolyn and Josiah both have huge hurts in their past that make them doubt what their hearts desire, yet the attraction between these two sizzles from their first meeting. Caudill adds danger and a counterfeiting scheme that will keep you guessing who is behind it all.
My favorite parts of this story were the moments when Gwendolyn opens her heart enough to share some tender moments with Josiah and the times when he pours on the flirting (not to mention all of the people who give him a hard time about his propensity for rescuing damsels in distress and the ensuing results).
For those who have read the first two books, you will enjoy some cameos by a few people you know. But if you haven’t read them, the author has done an excellent job of writing this book to stand on its own. This entire series was well-written, well-researched, and engaging. I cannot wait to see Caudill has in store for readers next.
Disclosure statement: I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book and was not required to write a positive or negative review. All opinions are my own.
Counterfeit Faith was the last book oof the Hidden Hearts of the Gilded Age series and it was perfection! I was so sad to see this series end because the characters and the storyline is so well done. I have enjoyed getting to know these characters even more as they each get their own storyline and Josiah's was so good. Josiah is investigating a counterfeit ring and his sources bring him to the Final Chance House of Refuge where not only does Gwendolyn is matron of, but his nieces and nephew have been placed in without his knowledge. So he has a double investment towards this case.
I absolutely loved the camraderie and love between these two characters. Granted that they are not without past lives. Josiah has been married before to the love of his life, so we see him opening up his heart to someone new. Unexpected for him but he can't help falling in love with Gwendolyn. They both learn a great deal of faith throughout the story.
One of the things I really admire about Ms. Caudill is that she doesn't waver when it comes to the faith threads/elements in her stories. They are solid and make you stop and think. She does it in a way that truly flows with the storyline and doesn't feel forced which tells me that her belief in God is genuine and not something that she has to pen but naturally flows from her.
Overall it was a great ending to the series and very bittersweet that it is over. However... I am looking forward to her next book and I hope and pray that she has many more coming! If you enjoy mystery, romance and faith filled books then I definitely recommend you read the whole series and do it in order!

Another great historical romance in Crystal Caudill's Hidden Hearts of the Gilded Age series!
Gwendolyn Ellison has devoted her life to serving the Final Chance House of Refuge and the children it protects. However, when it seems like someone may be taking advantage of Final Chance for nefarious purposes, Secret Service operative Josiah Isaacs comes into her life to thwart the danger—but she just might lose her heart in the process.
As Gwendolyn and Josiah face the challenges before them, Counterfeit Faith proves to be a story full of historical detail, charming romance, sneaky suspense, and uplifting faith. It is a delightful read from beginning to end, and I am so glad to have returned to this series for this new addition. Historical-romance readers are sure to enjoy every page!
I received a complimentary copy of this book and the opportunity to provide an honest review. I was not required to write a positive review, and all the opinions I have expressed are my own.
If it is possible, and it is, this series just keeps getting better. Crystal Caudill takes us into the dangerous world of counterfeiting and to the brave men who investigated these crime rings, In addition these books are full of growth, faith, and romance.
Gwendolyn and Josiah were a well-written pair. She is strong, fierce, and protective of the children in her charge, He is everything a hero should be, though broken from the loss of his past love.
The story was rich with mystery, character flaws, and opportunities for growth, It was well-done in an organic and natural way. Nothing was forced, the story naturally carried forward. They mystery had twists and turns that were unexpected and well-developed.
I truly enjoyed my time in this world with Gwendolyn and Josiah. The support characters added depth and richness. To be honest it was so well done that I struggled to truly pin down who the bad guy was until the book was ready to give up its secrets. The layers of mystery kept me guessing and turning pages the entire time.
I received an early copy of the book through the publisher and NetGalley and this is my honest review
Counterfeit Faith is a wonderful Christian, Historical fiction story filled with suspense, mystery, fascinating Philadelphia history, and clean romance. The faith filled messages are inspiring as you see main character, Gwendolyn Ellison facing great danger and trials but her faith in God remains strong. She's the matron of Final Chance House of Refuge where she gives her whole heart and soul to the children she loves and has dedicated her life to.
Secret Service operative Josiah Isaacs is brave and caring and always seeks for ways to help others. Gwendolyn and Josiah together make a good team as they investigate the misdeeds happening at the Final Chance House of Refuge . With such an exciting plot, loads of action, stalwart characters, snappy dialogue, and uplifting faith-filled words, Counterfeit Faith is an entertaining and engaging read for all Christian, Historical Fiction readers.
With clear and compelling prose, Crystal Caudill's Counterfeit Faith is full of mystery, suspense, and romance. As one clue leads to another, the reader is taken on a thrilling chase through Victorian Philadelphia looking for answers until the satisfying end. A beautiful story of faith, redemption, and hope.
Counterfeit Faith by Crystal Caudill is book three in her Hidden Hearts of the Gilded Age historical romance series.
I have thoroughly enjoyed this whole series, but I have been highly anticipating Josiah’s story since book one. I love his flirty charisma and his ability to be both laid back and intense. It has served him well as he’s helped his counterparts. Having him apply those qualities to an investigation that becomes more and more personal makes for a page-turning read! And Gwendolyn is the perfect match for him. Stalwart, faithful, and not interested in trapping the man into a proposal.
This story pulled me in from the start. It’s an engaging read with a great mystery. If you love suspense mixed with your historical romance, then definitely grab a copy of Counterfeit Faith. You don’t have to read the previous books to appreciate this one, but if you do, I’m sure you’ll love Josiah all the more.
--- I received a complimentary copy of this book. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with FTC guidelines.
Gwendolyn serves as matron of Final Chance of Refuge. She's fully committed to the children housed there. The reason some of the children are there and the methods used to reform them are suspect. While she can't make headway in these areas, Gwendolyn gives her full self to offer them love and encouragement.
Secret Service Agent Josiah has a focus on the refuge due to possible ties to a counterfeiting ring. He continues to mourn the loss of his wife that has been gone for ten years.
Loved the romance between the two. Neither was seeking love and there is a class difference between them.
There is also some suspense and mystery too. Another well written novel by the relatively new author Crystal Caudill. I look forward to what she will pen next.
My gratitude to the author and publisher Kregel for a complimentary copy of the novel. I was not required to post a review and all opinions expressed are my own.
I have thoroughly enjoyed the previous books in the Hidden Hearts of the Gilded Age series by Crystal Caudill so was not surprised that Counterfeit Faith also met my expectations of a great story. And what a story it was! With a heroine dedicated to taking care of the children under her care at Final Chance House of Refuge and a hero just as determined to protect all the women he perceives to be in danger, the action ramps up when their worlds collide.
Gwendolyn Ellison is a very self-sufficient young woman who has difficulty depending on others. It doesn’t matter to her that the children under her care are considered delinquents, she loves them all the same and wants the best for their lives. Suspicions that something is just not right at the home take her into dangerous territory but she refuses to give up her investigation. After rescuing her after a street attack, Secret Service operative Josiah Isaacs encounters her once again when his late sister’s children are taken to the refuge. Naturally the pair end up working together to solve the case of the dangerous counterfeiters who are using the home as a cover for their activities.
Counterfeit Faith is the perfect book for my tastes. I love both historical fiction and suspense novels so the combination of the two kept this reader happy. Ample action, danger, mystery, and suspense kept the unique plot moving along at the perfect pace while wonderful characters and vivid imagery rounded out the story. I liked how the author developed a strong message of faith through the lives of the characters and also liked that the romantic aspect was subtle. I would recommend this entire series.
I voluntarily reviewed a digital copy of this book provided by JustReads Publicity. A favorable review was not required. All views expressed are my own.
In this third and final book in her Hidden Hearts of the Gilded Age series, Caudill again provides a well-written adventure of the heart and spirit. When Gwendolyn Ellison, matron of Final Chance House of Refuge sets out to expose abuse within the system, she uncovers more than she bargains for.
As danger lurks, Secret Service operative, Josiah Isaacs, happens on the scene and comes to her aid. The chance meeting leads to more than either of them can imagine as a counterfeit investigation ensues. While Josiah's reputation for being a lady's man keeps Gwendolyn doubtful of his character, a haunting love from Josiah's past has him hesitate to willingly open his heart to another.
A love story with suspense and a spiritual thread woven within, Counterfeit Faith is a delightful ending to this fine series of novels.
New to this author, I just finished her Counterfeit series and unexpectedly liked it more than I thought I would! The first book, Counterfeit Love was good and the second book, Counterfeit Hope, was even better with lots of drama and suspense that had me on the edge of my seat at times! I also liked that the lives of the three Secret Service agents intertwine within the three books. Also, her books are filled with faith in Christ and the Gospel message which is always an encouragement to me. The last book was my least favorite, feeling like it dragged on a little and lacked the suspense of the first two books, (probably just me) but that's not to take away from Crystal Caudill's ability as a great writer and storyteller, incorporating so well the Christian message of Faith, Hope and Love in each of her stories. Well done! Will definitely read any of her future books.
I’ve been reading about Josiah, and his character always had me wanting to know more about him. He is such a sweet and funny character who is not in any way proud or haughty. His struggles are believable as we all have times where our faith is not as it should be.
Gwendolyn seemed like such a strong, independent woman. But like Josiah, she had an area where she struggled.
Josiah and Gwendolyn were perfect for one another. They helped each other where they struggled.
Their romance story was so cute. Josiah was so sweet towards Gwendolyn. Gwendolyn is below Josiah’s station, and Josiah is known as a rake. So that made the romance even sweeter. I love it when it’s like a “forbidden” romance.
The spiritual part in this was so good. We all have an area in our life that we struggle with. I’m just glad to see that the characters have struggled too.
Disclaimer: I received a complimentary copy of this book from Kregel through JustRead. I was not required to give a favorable review. All opinions are my own.
Danger has entered Gwendolyn’s world and confirmed flirt, Josiah Isaacs, is just the one to rescue her. The problem is that he can’t seem to do it without getting his heart involved. I loved the conflict that he struggled with to keep an emotional distance from a woman who claimed his attention without even trying.
Gwendolyn had a stubborn streak when it came to the children in her charge. I admired her strength of character as well as her strong faith. She challenged Josiah’s viewpoint of the world. Not only was there sweet romance, but the danger kept me turning the pages. This was also a great end to the series bringing in the characters from the previous books.
I received this book complimentary as a member of the author’s launch team. I was not required to give a positive review. All of the opinions I have expressed here are honest and my own.
This series was wonderful, and Counterfeit Faith was a great wrap-up! I love these characters! I listened to the audios, and the narrator was superb! Highly recommended!
Oh my wow! As with the other two books in this series, this one had me on the edge of my seat, unable to put it down while desperate for answers! Even though it's a historical romance, it's really more of a historical suspense. The danger is palpable right from the beginning and the suspense holds you captive until the very end. I love that even though the three books in this series share a common evil (counterfeiting), the similarities truly stop there. Each story is entirely unique from the others. Each was its own experience. The characters were impeccably well developed and the whole world they lived in was tangible as if I were standing in the streets with them. (Which of course didn't help my heartrate any haha).
Gwendolyn was such an easy character to love. Her heart for the children she worked with and her desire to protect them at all costs kept me helplessly turning the pages after danger seemed to be lurking around every corner. Not only did I need to make sure the kids were okay, but I didn't want anything to happen to her. While Josiah was clearly labeled as a flirt in his lifetime, it was still easy to see he had a heart of gold and an unquenchable desire to help those that couldn't help themselves. Their growth as characters wove perfectly in with their journeys and truly made me adore them more.
I also love that the author doesn't shy away from faith in her books. And she does a masterful job of weaving it in like a lifeblood that feels organic instead of forced. And its deep stuff too, not just the surface level.
Although you could get by reading this one as a standalone, my personal recommendation is to start at the beginning. Simply because they're all that amazing. I'm just sad the series is over now and I'm not done with the characters. I can't wait to see what the author comes up with next!
This book was the absolute perfect culmination of the Hidden Hearts of the Gilded Age series. I’ve loved each layer, each agent, each character as these devoted men found their equal, their match—not just their mate. Josiah was so compelling, such a complex fellow, and this book revealed many of the reasons why. When he meets Gwendolyn though, his flirtatious ways find a purpose. The suspense ebbed and flowed and ebbed again, and meanwhile our leading characters find themselves on the same side of a dangerous situation which allowed them to become more closely connected than they would ever have expected. I always learn something from Crystal Caudill’s books, but frankly they just tick all the boxes of romance, flirtation, historical drama, and suspenseful moments. I’ll miss these characters, but can’t wait to see what comes next from the author’s pen! I received a an advanced copy of this book from the publisher and was under no obligation to write a positive review.
Another runaway page turner from Ms. Caudill with loveable characters, dastardly villains, fascinating historical detail, and a whole lot of heart! I recommend this entire series and hope we see more of these characters in the future.
Disclosure: I received a complimentary copy of the ebook from the publisher via JustRead Publicity Tours. Opinions expressed are my own.
Scripture Connection
And straightway the father of the child cried out and said with tears, “Lord, I believe; help Thou mine unbelief!” Mark 9:24 (KJV)
The author uses the KJV when citing this verse, which fits the historical context, so I’m doing the same.
Spiritual Themes
One of my favorite themes in the novel, albeit not the primary theme, is that of the difference between earthly fathers and the Heavenly Father. Gwendolyn’s father, who battles an opium addiction, abandoned Gwendolyn and her mother. There are a few moments in the book that demonstrate God’s love for us as the Father. I appreciated the opportunity to walk alongside Gwendolyn in these moments of growth and insight.
Another theme, which is also mentioned in the discussion questions, is the “paradox of serving others while considering oneself superior.” There’s a passage I highlighted at the beginning of the book about people expecting others to appreciate the things that they themselves consider worthy of discarding. Having, like Paul, been in a position of need and also having had opportunity to share, this is a theme that is very important to me! From both sides, I have seen the Lord’s truly miraculous provision, and I recognize the wrongness of looking down on the poor (James 2:6). Because giving is an important part of Christianity, I really appreciate that Caudill broached this theme, going beyond the (far too frequently accepted) notion that any “gift” is a good gift.
Overarchingly, and in correspondence with the title, the largest theme is that of faith, juxtaposed with doubt. The novel explores what it looks like to have faith, in spite of doubts, and we see this reflected in the lives and dialogues of several characters. Caudill also discusses the theme in her note at the end of the book.
What I Liked
This is a note on the series, as a whole, since Counterfeit Faith is the conclusion. Upon reflection, I realized that the link between stories is the male protagonist in the Secret Service. Typically, for romantic series that I encounter with a different protagonist each time, it is the female characters who are connected. For this reason, I liked that the series followed the male colleagues/friends.
Caudill does a stellar job of weaving suspense into a historical setting. Historical fiction is not usually my favorite genre, but Counterfeit Faith quickly captured my interest. The writing is skillful, with cunning phrases that aptly capture sentiments and succinctly sum-up scenes and characters.
The characters are “honest” in the sense of feeling realistic and relatable, and I found Gwendolyn to be immensely likable. She’s strong and an excellent role model. I’m grateful that, while she generally makes commendable choices, she doesn’t come across as perfect, because we walk with her through her thought processes and temptations. In one scene, for instance, she demonstrates humility, although it would feel more satisfying to indulge in a moment of pride.
The pacing is excellent. While I have to admit that I had a little bit more trouble tracking with the mystery amidst the many characters involved in the story, I really enjoyed the strong integration of the mystery and I liked walking alongside the characters as the plot unfolded.
I’m also impressed with Caudill’s ability to weave in levity, as appropriate. These moments of humor lighten the mood, without feeling ridiculous or taking away from the story. I noted, for instance, a humorous reference to spelling books as the “future punishment of children everywhere.”
I appreciated the author’s clear delineation between love and infatuation. It was refreshing to observe Gwendolyn’s determination to act with discretion and discernment, recognizing that attraction is not the same thing as a lasting commitment. This is something I see explored, occasionally, in romance novels, and I like that Caudill made this choice. I also like that she took slightly different approaches to romance in the three books I’ve read, with characters knowing each other in different capacities and for different periods of time, before falling in love. In each case, I think commitment was core, and that is both important and encouraging, in a novel.
Content
There’s one use of “word” as an exclamation.
Josiah is a widower, which I know someone appreciated my mentioning in a review of another book.
Overall, this book was sweetly clean and I very much appreciated that the author, while writing a delightful romance, also highlights the importance of commitment.
Recommendation Status
The final book in the Hidden Hearts of the Gilded Age series, Counterfeit Faith is a delightful read. I enjoyed the mixture of suspense and humor against an interesting historical background, and I am impressed that the author managed to make each book so unique, while keeping to the topic of counterfeiting (a topic I, apparently, really enjoy). It was also cool how each book, likewise, explored the idea of a “counterfeit” spiritual element (love, hope, faith).
This is a title I can easily, and highly, recommend.
