Elise is running from her past. Maddox longs to be her future.
Elise left everything behind. Her family, her livelihood. She’s determined to escape the brothers who tormented her and find her own way, but being a peddler and performer at heart, her only prospects are within the festival community. So she sets off to find a new village and transforms herself into the Starling. But when winter approaches and her prospects are bleak, a young hatter invites her to take refuge in his parents’ home. Does she dare trust the family she’s just met when she fears retribution from her own brothers?
Maddox Hatcher falls for Elise almost as soon as she walks through his door, but she’s fourteen and focused on survival, so romance is the last thing on her mind. Instead, he becomes her trusted friend and ally, a protector she can count on. But it’s been three years now, and when an old acquaintance comes into Elise’s life and catches her eye, Maddox realizes he can’t wait around forever.
With the constant danger of her brothers finding her, Elise must be vigilant in guarding her identity and her safety. But nothing can prepare her for the encounter that will inevitably come.
Inspired by Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, this story follows Elise down the rabbit hole of the traveling festival performers, and her friendship with Maddox, the hatter who loves her.
I love words. I always have. In songs, in poems, in books, in movies—words move me. In my younger years, I dabbled in writing as a therapy and an escape, but I never expected it to become more than that. While deep in the depths of mommying several small children, I took seven years to write my first book, Just Ella. During that time, I taught myself how to write a novel through a whole lot of trial and error. Not the most time-efficient method, but it gave me an education I wouldn’t have received from a class or a how-to book. Something about the struggle of writing without a formula or rules worked for me. I wrote for me. I wrote from my heart space, and I think that’s the reason that Just Ella has found room in so many of my readers’ heart spaces.
I write clean romance because I love it. I love the discovery of new love. I love the relationship building that’s done with looks, words, brushing fingers, and tentative kisses. Jane Eyre is the hero of my youth and taught me that being true to yourself and clinging to your convictions will be hard, but it will bring you more genuine happiness than giving up on yourself ever can.
I am an extraordinarily happy wife, and a mother of five kids. I’ve lived in Utah, Arizona, Missouri, and Virginia, but my heart is now firmly ensconced in Idaho where we’ve built a home and a community.
I love chocolate, waterfalls, pretty teacups, the sight and sound of ocean waves, and most especially my husband and my five littles. I love books that leave me with a sigh of contentment, and I aspire to write stories that do the same for my readers.
Writing this in the post-book daze of happily ever after...
I loved The Starling and the Hatter. OH MY GOODNESS I loved it so much! Larsen spins such an enthralling tales with rich and complex characters that weave together BEAUTIFULLY. I think my favorite part was how madly in love Maddox was with Elise before she ever knew, and for years! I kept wanting to scream at him to hurry up, but of course, he is far too sensible and steady to listen to a reader screaming at them to kiss already.
I wish I could give it more than 5 stars! FANTASTIC read!
SIGH****** And that is why I love Annette's writing. It's so clear when authors add a piece of themselves and their hearts into their stories. It makes books so much better. This book touched me on a deep level and I found myself crying at a certain part when our lovely, scared, honest heroine found herself. So much of this life is spent looking out for who we our and I've been on a journey to look in and find me. This character does the same and what she finds sets her free. My story and hers have so many similarities I couldn't help but feel a little deeper then most reading this. I loved this love story and I loved the story of the Starling. Well done Annette. This is a sweet clean romance with a bit of violence. 14 and up. You can read this on it's own or with the others. This story is more a stand alone but her story begins in the book before.
Another great read from a consistently great author
Annette Larsen did an amazing job with this one. Usually, I can take or leave a fairytale retelling. The fact that a book is a retelling, has rarely been a deciding factor in whether or not I read it. (Except for Beauty and the Beast. I LOVE Beauty and the Beast retellings…*shrug*).
I have never once sought out a retelling of Alice in Wonderland but, I trust Annette explicitly. It was that trust, alone, that had me picking up The Starling and the Hatter. Nothing else. Just the name of the author. I even took a deep breath to brace myself as I opened to the first page, because I wasn’t sure any version of Alice in Wonderland could satisfy my need for a well-written, swoon-worthy, clean romance (which is a challenge for most authors as it is).
I freely admit that I was, oh, so wrong. Annette, I apologize. You are, as always, a master storyteller. I loved your hero, and your heroine. I believed in their connection and their motivations. Side characters were full without stealing the show. And the connections to the original “fairytale” were masterfully done. Thank you, for the best few hours of my week.
It was an amazing read inspired by Alice in Wonderland without any magical aspects needed whatsoever. Annette K. Larsen was able to capture many aspects of the tale into her book while keeping it entirely her own. I loved Elise's journey of self-discovery, understanding her own worth, and being able to break free of past traumas and hurts. And oh, Maddox Hatcher! Elise not only made him almost go mad but me along with him. And yet, through it all, Hatch stuck by her, always there to help and support her as well as being patient while Elise went on her journey down the rabbit hole. I'm so happy with how everything turned out, and although it was quite the slow burn, clean romance, it was definitely worth the wait! Even though I have other books to read, it won't be long till I come back to this one!
I adored this story! Such a cute story and I love how so many aspects of the actual story were incorporated into this retelling. There were some that I had totally forgotten about but was reminded of it when it came up. I was worried at first how the young girl and an older boy were going to fall in love without having a weird age difference but it all turned out great in the end.
It wasn't all carefree. There were several parts that were so heartbreaking I found myself not just tearing up but actually crying! The way Annette wrote the longing and sadness of both main characters was superb and I couldn't help but feel right along with them.
All in all, a sweet, clean romance that I would definitely want to read again.
I really loved this wonderful book! I loved the characters and the plot! It was nice to see the other characters again! I had a hard time putting this wonderful book down! I absolutely loved this retelling of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland! I will be reading the next book in this really wonderful series! I really love all of Annette Larsen's books!
Another delightful book by Annette K. Larsen! It was a sweet Alice in Wonderland retelling. I loved the dual point of view and it was so hard to put down once I started!
Clean and sweet. A story of finding oneself as well as a romance. With some unlikable villians to add tension to the mix. An easy read but with some depth to it.
Loved it! As a huge fan of Alice in Wonderland, I enjoyed spotting out characters and even reading certain words to remind me where I was. All that being said, I do believe there could have been a few more hints along the way as to the Wonderland aspect, but as you read, it's also somewhat based on another story. So I can't complain too much. Elise was good, especially as female heroines tend to go in my eyes lol. She got on my nerves a few times, and I had to remind myself she doesn't know better. Maddox was just as good; his patience and love for her was abundant. Watching him act as a GOOD (almost) big brother towards her in the beginning was adorable, and then it was even better watching it shift as they got older. If only he was a bit more obvious about it XD. And, okay, I have to say it: Nonetheless, it was a good, quick read for me. I would read it again, and read another Annette K. Larsen book. Content/Trigger Warning: Violence- A fair talk about abuse. Elise was smacked around plenty by her brothers. Spice- 0/5 None. Was clean the whole way through. A few kisses towards the end and mentions of desire. Age- Ideally, 13+
The odds were stacked against this installment--I've never been a fan of Alice in Wonderland retellings, and the idea of sucking all the magic out of it for this particular reincarnation sounded dull and tedious. Seeing that it was also a dual POV book, the type I dread, I debated skipping this for the next (a much anticipated Sleeping Beauty retelling!), but I am too much of a completionist.
Regardless, I am glad I did not.
This novel unexpectedly made me reevaluate my own prejudice against it. The inclusions of Alice in Wonderland story beats were novel (e.g. the white rabbit is a travelling magician, the hatter's twin siblings are Twiddle Dee and Twiddle Dum, etc.) and creative. I especially loved how she reworked the climax to be a more historically realistic, nonmagical event, yet still just as gripping (if not more so). And the romance... I have been irritated at the lack of yearning (a la Jane Austen style!) in recent trending romances, and this very much delivered on that front. The slow build made me anxious to reach the end as fast as possible and see how they'd end up together!
My only grief--which is common with Larsen's books--is that her male heroes sometimes tend to be Mary Sues, meant only to help the heroine reach her self-actualization. This usually is less obvious through one POV, but two POVs make it glaringly obvious that his personality was confined to being a good love interest. I would have loved to see more of his "wild self", whether that's in him reflecting on his craft or his goals and wants beyond a certain lovely pair of eyes.
This is my first Alice in Wonderland retelling! I don’t really care for the cover of this one…it’s a bit odd. But anyway, I was glad to get to read about Elise’s story! She is a lovely character and I love that she can sing! Maddox was great! I like that name…it’s unique! His family was adorable! This was so interesting and unlike any book I have read before! There was some certain parts with him helping her with her costume that was weird. I didn’t care for Robert and the way Elise acted around him. Again, I didn’t care for the part about the mystic…completely unnecessary. It did kinda drive me crazy that Maddox wouldn’t just tell her that he loved her! Overall, it was a pretty good Alice in Wonderland retelling. I’m excited to continue the series!
Quote that I liked:
🎩 He wasn't going to leave me. He'd had every reason to walk away and wash his hands of me, but he hadn't. Not only had he waited, but he'd fought for me, with both his words and his actions.
After Elise escaped her brother's clutches in Emeline's book, I didnt think id see her again. Or I thought she be mentioned in passing in other books. To get her story, its a treat. Honestly, its my favorite book of the series. Her story broke me. It truly hurt all she suffered. Yet, as broken as she was, she was still kind and knew right from wrong. She is strong. She pushed through. I can't thank or be thankful enough to Dorothy and Marshall. They treated her like their daughter and never made her feel like a burden. They showed her true kindness, true love, and true affection. She is their family. And for Elise to end up with Hatcher? Well nothing is more perfect. He is so sweet and he waited for her. He didnt cage her or force her to love him. He waited for her to be ready and to find her own path and her own way. I love them together. One thing I wished for is that Elise could have seen and talked with Emeline and the others. I hope she does at some point. I think they'd be happy for Elise finding her happiness and safety.
I enjoy Annette Larson as a writer. Most of her books are fun adventures, with unique characters. I think my favorite book of hers is the first one I ever read... Just Ella. But I've also enjoyed most of her books that have followed, both the series about Ella's family, and this new, twisted fairytale series.
It was fun to see the heroine in this book get her story. Ever since she escaped her brothers in the Little Red Riding Hood adaption, I've been excited to read it. My one complaint is that this book felt pretty slow moving. It felt like journal entries, with very little dialog. I kept thinking, "Here it comes! The action!" And then it would be more journal entry-like writing.
I was also a bit put off by the change back and forth between characters. I prefer to have the view from one person alone.
The story wasn't bad. It just wasn't written in a way that drew me in. Others might really like this style.
After Cloaked in Scarlet, Elise’s story picks up. When she finds a second family in Maddox, she learns what family really can be. I loved everything about this book. The struggle to believe a family could really love her after all she had been through was realistic, and her internal realization felt earned rather than forced.
Larsen is excellent with pacing. I had time to understand the characters and learn who they are and what they wanted. Elise and Hatcher fit together perfectly.
I’m not a fan of love triangles these days so I was glad that Hatcher got the majority of the book’s time. Having his POV alongside Elise’s certainly was a nice surprise.
Excellent story that expertly weaves in emotion and a healthy relationship. Clean in language and content. Highly recommend.
The Starling and the Hatter by Annette K Larsen What I loved about this book: 🎩 A girl escaping her past 🎩 He falls first 🎩 Traveling festival performers 🎩 Hidden identity 🎩 Sweet and swoony romance, just kisses Another amazing book from Annette K Larsen! This one is a Alice in Wonderland retelling and its just so cute!!!! I absolutely loved all the names that tied in to the original (Elise for Alice, Maddox Hatcher for the Mad Hatter, Robert White for the White Rabbit and so on). A must read for sure! Part of the Tales of Winberg series, best read in order but could be read as a standalone Favorite scene: Elise spending time with the Hatcher family Favorite character: Hatcher (our main male character)
I loved this story. I couldn't wait to read it and it was even better than I expected. The characters and storyline were fantastic. And it was so fun to see how elements of Alice in Wonderland were incorporated into the story. I bookmarked so many scenes throughout the book and highlighted words of wisdom that resonated with me. This is a boom that I will definitely be rereading.
Larson’s The Starling and the Hatter was a fantastic read. I love how she incorporated the familiar Alice in Wonderland characters into the story but in a completely different way. The story is creative, warm, and tugs at your heart. I especially love Hatcher. Well done. A lovely read.
Annette never lets me down. Her swoony, clean, and each unique relationships render me wanting more and more every time. Elise and Hatcher were no different! I love their friendship to lover storyline, they learned and grew together and then came together. Just 🤌🏻🤌🏻🤌🏻
Not to mention I’m always laughing out loud when reading her books. They’re an instant mood lifter.
Darling love story! Winks and nods to the characters and themes of Alice in Wonderland. Elise/Alice escapes a life of abuse at the hands of her fiendish brothers then she meets Maddox Hatcher. Wink wink the Mad Hatter. And finds abundant love acceptance and a home with the entire Hatcher family!!
This is a much lighter take than the others in the series but by no means is it lacking. I love the play on the Alice in Wonderland story. It was fun picking through the trail. In all a pretty good read.
Hatcher was such an adorable hero. I love how he was a bit awkward, and Ioved getting his POV.
Elise likewise was great too. She was so tough.
The age difference threw me off in the beginning, Elise is 14 in the beginning, and Hatcher 18. I was so glad when the story jumps forward 3 years before it starts the romance.
I absolutely adored Hatcher’s family. They are the sweetest!
Annette, thank you so much. It took me nearly till the end of the book but I finally saw myself in the protagonist, always needing to prove my worth to those who love me. Thank you for your insight into the human condition AND your great writing skills!!
I enjoyed this story very much. I love that Elise got to find a family who truly cared about her. The nods to Alice's Adventures in Wonderland were cleverly woven in. And I appreciate Maddox's supportive role in the story.
I was so excited to get a friends-to-lovers book from Annette! Maddox’s pining for Elise is so tender, and their evolving love story is so happy. Elise has an especially strong personal journey of discovery as she deals with her traumatic past and comes into her own sense of self-worth.
