Storm Chaser

Rate this book
Chasing dangerous storms is in Marley Pascal’s blood. For her, it’s an obsession—a need to confront the powerful, destructive forces that killed her parents.

But the storm she and her brother track down seems to violate the very laws of nature, with lightning that strikes as if from another world. In its crater, Marley finds a small purple crystal with a terrifying energy that hits her like a bolt to the chest when she picks it up.

Suddenly, it’s like the electricity pulses through her blood, a charge she can’t control. Which is exactly when he comes looking for her—the ridiculously hot boy whose eyes spark and crackle with the same force that now resides in her body. And he smells like summer rain…

But what’s inside Marley isn’t meant for her—or for any human. It belongs to him. To his kind.

As long as this force stays in her body, she’s a living target. A weapon meant to protect…or destroy.

Because now she is the storm.

Thank you so so much Entangled Publishing for approving me for an eARC. I’m so excited to dive down and read this book. With that said, I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Also, I kinda jumped the gun and submitted my NetGalley feedback before even finishing the book but the beginning pages are THAT GOOD. I knew I was gonna love the book and I was right. Oh my gosh was I right.

First off, thank you for the content warnings right at the beginning. I love it when authors/publishers do that. It really shows they care about their readers.

I knew this was going to be a book I was going to love right from the start. Marley is such a beloved character and she’s so relatable. Her whole dynamic with her family is (especially Patrick). The story, the concept, Brae, everything was *chef’s kiss*. I’m not exactly sure why anyone asks me to give reviews cause I do is talk about how I have no words and how good the book is lmao.

I devoured this book I swear. When I wasn’t busy at work, I was reading it. And I had to fight back a squeal at a certain “Please, let me save you.” because *swoon* and again, I was at work and it was 0500 and… yeah.

Cassen and Brae’s banter was just so perfect. The whole “am I interrupting?” “Kinda, yeah. Go away, Cassen.” bit would’ve had me howling had I, AGAIN, not been at work.

And then I spent the entirety of the next day, my day off, finishing this book.

Only for it to end on a frickin cliffhanger.

I have a love-hate relationship with arcs y’all. I love reading books early but I hate having to wait that much longer for a sequel.

IT WAS SOOOOOO GOOD. I LOVED THIS BOOK.

I need the sequel like yesterday. Inject it into my veins. NOW.

Lindsey Duga is truly one of my favourite authors. She’s one of the most unique storytellers on the market and every single one of her books has left me completely gobsmacked and obsessed.

Stormchaser has such an interesting and cool story. It’s hard to say much without giving it away, but let’s just say you couldn’t predict what was going to be a major plot point from just taking a peak at the synopsis. It’s FAR more exciting to find out for yourselves, so I won’t ruin the fun for you.

If you’re a fan of storms of any kind and CW levels of teen angst, you all absolutely need to add this one to your TBRs.

I NEED BOOK 2 NOOOOOOWWWWWW.

Marley lost her parents in a dangerous storm several years ago, and has been intrigued by their destructive power ever since. When she stumbles across a community of aliens who are essentially a personification of a storm, she has to decide who she can trust.

I absolutely loved this book! Marley was a brilliant, relatable character (who's relationship with her brother was goals) and the world building was clever and detailed. I think Lindsey Duga is a master storyteller, and she is quickly becoming an auto buy author!

I received a copy from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

Wow

I honestly wasn’t expecting this book to be as good as it was. The emotions between Marley and Brae are super intense. Both of them have wounds and scars that make it hard to trust. I really enjoyed how they had to struggle to work together, and how they slowly opened up to each other.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own. I loved this book I could not put it down. A storm chaser was such a new topic for me and I am all for it. I really don’t want to give anything away, but it has otherworldly beings, a great plot and so much more. Read this book.

STORM CHASER is an engaging YA fantasy with aliens, magic, and storms. Marley is an aspiring storm chaser, who is beginning to shadow her professional brother. They are both invested in it as they want to determine better ways to detect storms and help to save lives after they lost their parents in an unexpected twister. It is on one such storm chase that they find a strange crater. When Marley picks up an unusual stone, she feels as though she has been struck by lightning.

Brae is an enlil, essentially an alien from another planet with superman-style abilities. He and the other enlil came to Earth where the nitrogen they breathe is in such higher quantity that their abilities are massively expanded. They control the weather with different levels of ability and affinity. Brae is the head of the lightning clan, being the one with the oculus. The oculus enhances their power - and it was carried in the stone that Marley picked up, transferring the power of the oculus to her.

There is a war brewing, with Brae opposed by another young clan leader, something he is desperate to prevent, and Marley may just have landed herself in the middle of it all.

What I loved: The premise of this was really interesting, and I loved the way the world-building slowly accumulates as we learn more about the enlil and the world they have left behind as well as their abilities now. The book is told from dual perspectives of Marley and Brae, which really helps the reader to get into the story and works well.

Marley and Brae are both dealing with trauma in their past around their families/clans. They have dealt with this in their own ways, with both taking actions to try to save others. Marley wants to help find ways to save others from the destruction of nature, while Brae seeks to prevent his own kind from war and careless deaths. As they collide, they begin to realize that their goals may be aligned in some ways - however, a lack of trust on both sides makes this difficult.

The romance builds slowly with a focus on the sci-fi/fantasy elements, but it was really easy to cheer for, and their chemistry was really great. While there is some resolution of the major plot points in the book, there are definitely some elements that remain to be continued in future books. I will definitely be interested to see where this one goes!

Final verdict: STORM CHASER features intriguing world-building and compelling characters for an explosive read.

Please note that I received an eARC. All opinions are my own.

I’ve always been fascinated by storm chasers and their reasons, some very personal, for choosing that line of work. It’s off the chart dangerous, and I’m surprised I haven’t come across another book before this featuring that profession.

The author’s note at the end of the story explains how the weather in her area of the country (south Louisiana) influenced this story. Take the power of storms, throw in some aliens, storm chasers, superpowers, and a headstrong female protagonist, and you’ve got a gripping plot.

Marley aspires to become a meteorologist like her brother, Patrick. She’s ecstatic when she’s allowed to spend a day with him and his team tracking a storm. After a powerful lightning strike leaves a large crater, Marley picks up a purple crystal left behind – in hindsight, probably not her smartest decision. Bolts of energy course through her body – energy that belongs to someone else.

Brae, along with his clan and several others, are from another planet. Most of them try to live quietly among the humans after their planet is destroyed, but Cassen wants to rid the world of humans and make Earth their own. Brae is determined that won’t happen, and he’s the only obstacle between Cassen and his goal. His problem? The Superman-like power once housed in a oculus within Brae, the power he uses to fight off Cassen, now resides within Marley.

I loved the sibling relationship between Patrick and Marley. They only have each other after their parents were killed by a tornado several years earlier. Patrick is now her guardian and incredibly protective of her. As the leader of his clan, Brae’s utmost priority is keeping them safe. But when he develops feelings for Marley, those priorities become muddled. The gradual reveal of the details of his home planet, Enos, demonstrates even more of the precarious position Brae is in.

Told with a dual POV between Marley and Brae, Storm Chaser moves at a brisk pace and features thrilling action scenes. I have to mention I got a kick out of all the pop culture references – especially when Marley mentions that she and her brother text in Elvish. With that cliffhanger, I’m anxious for the next book!

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

When I read the blurb for this one I had no idea what I was in for, and it's fantastic, I won't give anything away but the "kind" that's mentioned in the blurb is so not what I thought it was going to be.

As someone that loves every movie SYFY puts out.... well almost every movie, this book was right up my alley, with storm chasers, otherworldly beings, and relationships that have more electricity than bolts of lightning this book has something for everyone.

Without giving too much away I'll say this, go into this book with an open mind and you might learn something from our characters.

I have to say I'm glad I requested this one, it's a little outside of my normal comfort zone but I really enjoyed it and look forward to reading more by Lindsey Duga, she gives amazing voices to the characters she writes, and I was invested to the last page and hope to see more of Marley and her interesting circle of friends and family.

Overall though my opinion is that this is a book about acceptance, seeing people for who they truly are inside, and not making rash decisions when someone is a little, ok a lot different than you are (remember there are consequences when you do), that being said our characters did not have a smooth time of it, but they learned from each other and the worlds around them.

Let me take one moment to talk about the storms, I felt like I could hear the storms, smell the rain, and feel the air change while reading this book, with the descriptive storytelling it's an immersive experience and a fantastic example of how to write a weather scene.

Thank you to NetGalley and Entangled Teen for providing an advance copy of this book, I have voluntarily read and reviewed it and all thoughts and opinions are my own.

I don't read a lot of YA these days, but this cover totally called to me. It's gorgeous and the blurb was really interesting.

The first few pages were very much like a popular storm chaser movie but it doesn't take long for things to get moving in a fresh direction. Marley aka Marlena tags along storm chasing with her brother an ends up picking up some serious mojo from the aftermath of a super tornado in the form of energy from another planet.

Energy that causes storms.

Brae, the owner of the special power is drawn to Marley in more ways than one. One she has his power and then she's a bit of a firecracker. He's trying to do all the right things, although he ends up making mistakes that cost them. I really did like the world that is built here with this story and I see lots of opportunities for future stories, especially between Marley and Brae and their budding romantic feelings (G-rated) for each other.

I ended up enjoying this story quite a bit. The story was entertaining, moved along quite nicely, the characters are interesting, the world is well-constructed while still leaving some room for new craziness. Storm Chaser ends in a tiny cliffhanger that reveals Brae true nature to more people, which is guaranteed to cause all sorts of trouble.

Overall, I'm really glad I picked up this YA alien story and it was definitely worth reading. Definite kudos for an awesome cover!

Storm Chaser is a new young adult sci-fi novel by Lindsey Duga. Marley is a storm chaser, chasing after destructive forms of weather ever since the death of parents. When chasing an unusual storm she finds a crystal leftover in the aftermath. Suddenly charged with energy not of this world, Marley soon encounters a boy with lightning in his eyes. Marley now contains an otherworldly power within, that wasn't meant for her or for any human to hold. She's a target, a weapon. She's the storm.

This novel is electrifying. Quick and right to the point, you're placed in Marley's shoes as she and her brother's team track down a storm. And the action just continues from there. This book rarely has a dull moment which makes reading it a breeze.

The science fiction is realistic and the novel does an excellent job of explaining the world contained within. As a science major at heart, it was refreshing to read a novel that talked about electrons and charges, making sense of them.

The romance in this novel is swoon-worthy and sure to make your heart twisty everytime the main couple sparks.

I'd recommend this novel to anyone who wants to read a young adult science fiction novel that's fast-paced with a sense of realism.

Thank you to Netgalley and Entangled Teen for an eARC of this novel. All thoughts and opinions contained within this review are my own.

Storm Chaser is the first in a new series by Duga. We meet Marley Pascal on one of her first storm chases with her brother and his team. For Marley chasing storms is a way to try and help fill the loss of her parents who were killed by a tornado. From the synopsis: But the storm she and her brother track down seems to violate the very laws of nature, with lightning that strikes as if from another world. In its crater, Marley finds a small purple crystal with a terrifying energy that hits her like a bolt to the chest when she picks it up." Well now Brae, the owner of that crystal is looking for her and when he finds her her world turns upside down as she is introduced to a world she never would have believed existed with aliens living among humans.

I really enjoyed that this book was different with aliens that can control atmospheric phenomena. I unfortunately didn't really care for Marley as a character with this is a YA story her thoughts and actions felt more like middle school characteristics than that of an upper classman in high school. I will definitely read the next book as I really enjoyed Brae and the side characters and need to know where this leads 3.5 stars

Storm Chaser by Lindsey Duga

**I received a copy of this book from Entangled Publishing and Net Galley in exchange for a voluntary review.**

I have always had a curiosity of why storm chaser do what they do but this book gives you a look inside as both Marley's brother and friends research the storm and what causes it. However little does she know that the her parents were taken during a tornado could've been caused by group of aliens who control atmospheric conditions. Nor could she know that she has absorbs the lightening into her body when touched. Because of this she now is a target for one person who wants to control all the elements and make Earth his planet without us on it. However Brae wants the source back from Marley and knows that he must protect her from his enemy at all costs perhaps even his own life.

I would have given the book a higher rating had it not been a cliff hanger because I really hate the waiting for the next book to find out what happens. All in all its worthy of a four star rating.

Something I wish I would have know before starting this book- this book is clearly not a standalone. The ending is left wide open and many questions unanswered. That being said, I found the concept of weather controlling aliens really interesting. I wish we saw a bit more of alien culture and what makes them different from humans. I found the relationship between Marley and Brae was frustrating. Once again, my pet hate, the lack of honest and open communication, is the biggest hurdle. I’m not saying he has to lay out his secrets to her. But being honest about their feelings, even if they are messy, is a much more enjoyable read to me.

*Thoughts*

Lindsey Duga's Storm Chaser is a story about storms, aliens, romance, and magic. For the past 5 years, Marley Pascal, who resides in Kansas aka Tornado Alley, has spent a whole lot of time learning about the weather and how storms like tornadoes develop and cause so much damage. Storms that 5 years ago, took the lives of her parents while somehow managing to leave her, and her brother Travis, behind to pick up the pieces.

Storm Chaser was an ok fast read. It was high on the angst and drama and low on romance but it definitely could be called a forbidden romance. I also liked that this was a new spin on the alien story, where they are clans and each clan can control a different kind of weather. This is the first in a series so some issues are left unanswered and if you are looking for an epic romantic moment here you will be sadly mistaken. I will definitely keep my eye out for the next book in the series because I would like to see what will come of the brewing war.

I think this is a very interesting concept, but I feel like it could have been executed better. Same of the storyline seemed a little convoluted and the fight scenes felt repetitive. I feel like this story has a lot of potential for growth as it continues though.

So many heart eyes for this lovely book.

There is not much I can say without giving away the plot that you definitely want to be surprised by, but let's say, the science in here is so smart and so unique. I've always been fascinated with tornadoes, hurricanes -- I've seen all Sharknado movies -- so you bet that I soaked up every tiny bit of info like a sponge.

Lindsey is a brilliant writer. I love books that just feel easy to read. You can read the whole thing in a afternoon and have that "what year is it?" moment with this one. The romance here is incredibly slow burn and you will absolutely find yourself yelling at the paper (or screen) to have these two super awkward dorks finally give in! Enemies-to-lovers slow burn to the absolute max. It is almost lethally slow burn. But man, it is good.

It's free on KU right now, definitely a gem to look into!

Energy charged adrenaline..but fell slightly flat

I enjoyed reading this with heated and electrical excitement, but it fell slightly of my expectations. I was expecting for the FL to be more front and center and just some conduit for these beings. I hope any future book will up the drama and the FL as more than just a "battery charger".

The main reason for the 3 star was Marley. Felt she was too immature and her actions seemed of that of someone younger. Story had potential and I was really hopeful with the blurb since I love storms.

Read it in a day, I really enjoyed it! The amount of nerdy references was amazing, hoping there’s a sequel.
