Boss From Hell

Rate this book
Starting a new job can be murder...

Mig Solder's new place of work is a little ... odd. Sure, there's unlimited free coffee, but there's also personal messages that seem to have no sender, colleagues that don't seem quite, well, human, and random emails warning her to run. Now.

When she discovers her predecessors didn't quit, they just disappeared, Mig decides to put her obsessive attention to detail to good use and investigate. With the help of her mysterious new neighbor, her spirit-contacting best friend, and her wild grandmothers, Mig uncovers a plot way above her pay grade. And once she starts dabbling in the supernatural, the consequences won't just appear on her performance review, it may just take her life - and her soul.

Brilliant, quirky and action-packed

This is the most delightfully woven ordinary to extraordinary tale I've read in ages. You're busily snickering at Mig's turn of bad luck, laughing at her oh-so-mundane travels on Melbourne's suburban train network, flat tyre and getting drenched in a winter deluge, then before you know it, clues, events and Mig herself have taken a decidedly dark turn and you are deep in the... (spoilers). Sharp, quirky, supernatural with a dash of romance. And those grandmothers! They are a menace. Love them to bits.
No spoilers. Go and read it for yourself.
This is a brilliant, funny and action-packed read.

I really enjoyed this book. Margaret, Mig, is a wonderful character and I also love the supporting characters in the book. I hope the author plans on making this into a series.

Review originally posted on A Keyboard and an Open Mind June 17, 2023:

Laurie Bell is a Twitter writing friend of mine, and I had seen a lot of our mutual friends raving about this book, so I had to check it out!

Mig is lucky enough to land a new job the same day she loses her old one, but there’s something off about the office. Her boss is a creep and she’s receiving ominous instant messages that seem to have no sender. With the help of two riotous grandmas, a sexy new neighbour and a witchy best friend, Mig starts to investigate exactly what is going on at the mysterious consultancy.

For the fair chunk of the book, the supernatural elements are limited, and I was waiting for that aspect to kick in. Once it does though, it’s a wild ride through to the end.

I would have liked to see some things explored a little bit more, such as Mig’s grandmothers’ history (I’m not saying too much for spoiler reasons) or her best friend’s psychic ability. The focus is very much the titular boss and office, but I think deepening the other parts of Mig’s life and her investigation could have added deeper layers.

The ending is rather open-ended and I am not sure whether there is an impending sequel or not. I rather hope there might be, as there is plenty of potential!

There's something not quite right about Margaret's new job, and her new neighbour, in this entertaining and humorous novel from Australian author Laurie Bell. As the clues and sinister foreboding mount up, her everyday, normal existence spirals out of control, with dramatic effect!
I've read the author's other works which have been sci-fi space adventures, and it was interesting to see her write a more down to earth character and situation. Memorable characters, engaging dialogue and set piece showdowns make this an entertaining and well written read.

Margaret finds herself suddenly out of work after a betrayal by at least one colleague, and at a minimum, indifference from a boss she had served loyally for five years.

A sudden recruitment to a new job has an amazing salary, and ends up having some serious downsides.

A mysterious neighbor, a kitty, and two butt kicking grandmothers who boggle the mind and most explanations make for an intriguing, suspense filled and partly humorous partly baffling read.

Such a fun and entertaining read, perfect for fans of Buffy and Lucifer. When Margaret (Mig for short) gets fired from her job as a personal assistant, she’s desperate to find work asap so she can pay the mortgage on her new place. Luckily, she’s head-hunted and offered a new job that seems too good to be true. And it is.

Before her first week is done, Mig encounters messages asking for help sent to her computer that disappears whenever she tries to show others. Her boss also sends her on errands delivering what looks to be clothes covered in blood and contracts about souls. To make things worse, she discovers every PA hired before her has mysteriously disappeared. With help from her psychic energy-reading best friend, a hunky new neighbor who has a dark past of his own, and crazy-antic-inducing grandmothers who have a knack for showing up at the wrong time, Mig needs to discover what her boss is up to, and how to stop him. Combining humor, heart, action, and myth, Laurie Bell will keep you turning every page until you reach the final twist—and then leave you wanting more.

This is not my usual go to genre, but I was not disappointed. This book is full of intrigue, suspense, horror, the paranormal, and a dash of good old humour. The grandmothers, Rose and Berry, are fantastic. They are an absolute hoot and full of surprises. Highly recommend this read. I loved it.

Buffy with shades of Supernatural combine with an ordinary (yet sassy) administrator who suddenly finds herself plunged into the shadowy world of demons and spirits.

When Mig is suddenly fired then offered a new dream job the same day (with an excellent pay package and great perks no less), she’s over the moon. But the dream soon unravels when Mig discovers her last three predecessors are missing, and the office vibe is just, well, weird. Certain something is amiss and worried she might be next, Mig makes it her mission to get to the bottom of it.

The first thing you notice about this story is the voice of its narrator. In three words: voice for days. Mig’s character practically springs off the page as we’re introduced to her 20-something life and watch her navigate its ups and downs, which get progressively bigger and more supernatural. Perhaps what I most enjoyed about this is Mig is an ordinary woman. She’s not the fated vampire slayer or a jiu-jitsu champion, she’s an unassuming pencil pusher (a very good pencil pusher, mind you) who’s haplessly found herself in the crosshairs of a supernatural conspiracy. She could not be more ill-equipped to handle such a situation, and yet through friendship, family, a timely new neighbour and a ton of luck, she does.

As a main character, Bell has absolutely worked gold here. From Mig’s coffee addiction to financial independence worries, her character is relatable on so many levels. Ordinary as she may be, her underdog story is something we can’t help but get behind, especially as she takes on the role of office detective and steadily drifts into deeper and more paranormal waters.

Part mystery, part humour, this paranormal office high jinx doesn’t just keep you on your toes, it keeps you turning the page over and over.
