Better execution but still a letdown
I have to start with the amazing fact that there were less errors all round in this book which, frankly, with the overall standard for Fel's grammar and spelling and carelessness when it comes to missing out words entirely, is a miracle at this stage.
But.... the story I thought we'd be getting didn't materialise. In Arrow, we met the severely traumatised Colin, bonded by force to a monstrous alpha who used that bond to compel him to terrorise, injure and kill other shifters. The Colin that appeared here was still recovering from his horrific ordeal, with nightmares and overwhelming guilt and self-recrimination.
Bash turned out to be a real sweetheart, absolutely besotted with Colin, protective and adoring.
So far, so good, but then it all fell apart. Lots of pining from afar on both sides, then one date that ended in sex? WTF? There needed to be more build up, more comfort, more healing before they became a committed couple after a few hours. Colin was fine after the sex, no more trauma whatsoever, and that's just not the way it works, even in fiction.
There were other things that didn't work for me, like Venom using Colin as the big bad to intimidate others. Colin's family who were built up as trouble but turned out to be anything but, so why bother doing that in the first place? Jules. I hated everything about him, his behaviour, his attitude, and how he treated Bane was disgusting. I know it's their story next and I really don't want to read it but I'm going to have to because there may be more books in this series and despite my reservations and to my utter disgust, I'm hooked on these stories, even though I dislike myself for it.
