Mr. Right wasn’t expecting Mx. Tall, Dark, and Beautiful.
Bo Being out and proud as a nonbinary person didn’t come easy, but I’ve finally found my place. I have an amazing work family at the cabaret bar where I perform, Chicago fits me better than my Texas hometown ever did, and I’m truly happy.
Especially once Jameson walks into my life. Our new bartender accepts me effortlessly for who I am, and the man is more than easy on the eyes. In fact, the way he looks out for me is giving me all sorts of ideas, even though those cuddles were purely platonic. Weren’t they?
But I have more on my mind than finding Mr. Right. My brother Diesel won’t stop hounding me, which means it’s time to face the very thing I’ve been avoiding for years.
I need to return to Plum Valley and confront my past.
Jameson I’ve never met anyone quite like Bo.
Every time they’re up on stage in their makeup and heels, I watch them. When that shy blush spreads over their cheeks off-stage, I stare. And when I find them crying in the storage room after a difficult conversation with their brother, I can’t help but soothe away their tears.
I always assumed I was only attracted to women, but suddenly, I’m questioning everything. Including my reaction to the sight of Bo in lingerie. I might have a lot to figure out, like whether or not Bo is interested in me. But I think it’s fairly safe to say…
I’m not as straight as I thought I was.
Courageous Hearts is an MX romance between a man and the enby he adores, with show tunes, love bites and lace, a pan-awakening, one jealousy-inducing bull ride, and a very HEA. It’s book 5 in the Plum Valley Cowboys series but can be read as a standalone.
Emmy Sanders, author of sweet, steamy, swoony MM romance, would describe herself as a lover of love. She's obsessed with both reading and writing romance and believes everyone deserves their happy ending. Queer herself, Emmy has a soft spot for LGBTQ+ fiction, but MM is where her heart lies. Her debut novel, Fool Hearts, released in 2022.
All the stars for enby representation. I can't remember if I've ever read a book featuring a nonbinary MC, but more, please.
I'm all about diversity in romance: differently abled, neurospicy, trans, NB ... bring it!
I adored Bo. They are a breath of fresh air and fully own their truth. Bo talks about their past, how they were a bully and liar, hurting others because they hurt more.
Enter Jameson, the new bartender at the cabaret bar where Bo performs, who falls for Bo on sight. Who doesn't want a Jameson? He's the perfect boyfriend, maybe too perfect. He's immediately accepting of Bo's pronouns and barely blinks before declaring he isn't so straight after all.
I can't be too mad though. This isn't an angsty story. This is the sunshine after the clouds.
There's a brief moment of misunderstanding, but these two are all in from day 1.
Also, did I mention the sexy? I would be remiss if I didn't. This one's HOT, y'all.
I hugged the epilogue and left with a smile on my face.
Except for book 4, I've really enjoyed the Plum Valley Cowboys series.
I have so little experience with nonbinary individuals and I felt like Emmy blessed us with a lot of excellent knowledge. Not only that, but I thought she did a great job representing that stripe on the Pride flag.
Bo feels like they have a lot to overcome after a past they’re not too proud of. They also needed to make peace with their home town and the very high possibility that they would never fix the broken relationship between them and their brother.
Bo and Jameson meet in the cabaret where they both work. Jamie always considered himself straight but he was intrigued from the moment he saw Bo perform on stage.
My god, this man is perfect in every way. He did his research to show his total respect and adoration for Bo. And it didn’t take him long to realize he’s not so straight after all.
The neediness, the affection and mutual respect should be everyone’s relationship goals. Plus the heat was pretty dang good too, these two could really burn up the sheets or the storage room.
The entire cast was phenomenal. I loved how everyone uplifted Bo when they had so little self confidence. Considering their family sucks, how fortunate to not just find one found family, but two.
I couldn’t get enough of Bo and Jameson and I hated to see this end.
I'm honestly so surprised I loved this because I read the first three books in this series and disliked them, I gave them all 3 stars (which was probably me being way too generous now that I look back on it) I didn't read book 4 and had no plans to read any more of this series or of this author -
but I kept seeing such good reviews about this book popping up in my feed and my curiosity got the best of me and I decided it was worth a shot - at worst maybe it would just be another 3 star 😂
but oh my gosh I actually loved this! It was so good. Both characters were so sweet and mature and I just loved their interactions. I really loved Jameson's family and how supportive he was of Bo working through their relationship with their family. I had to go back and read the first kiss scene a second time because I loved it so much. I really appreciate how much this book taught me about being non-binary- I felt like I learned so much without the book having big info dumps.
Just all around loved this- still undecided on if I will be reading any more of this series (book 4 or 6) or of this author - but at least this was really good!
This book made me smile so hard. Bo and Jameson were absolute perfection together. I've been curious about Bo ever since the Pride parade in Virgin Hearts and have loved seeing them come into their own as a side character throughout this series. Because they had already been through so much as a kid and teenager, I had hoped their story would be gentle and low angst and that's exactly what it was. Jameson was perfect for Bo. He was so respectful and honest when it came to Bo's gender identity and his willingness to do research and ask questions warmed my heart. He wanted Bo to feel safe and loved and cared for, so he was open and communicative with them about his feelings and concerns. Imagine that! And Bo was such a beautiful character. They had to walk away from lot in order to live their life authentically, yet they still balked at being called brave. I loved all of their demure blushes and tentative smiles. Their shyness off stage was a fun contrast to their lack of reserve on stage. I always love seeing people come alive when they're in their element and cabaret was definitely Bo's element.
The relationship between Bo and Jameson was incredibly sweet and I very much enjoyed reading their story. I could have done without the excruciatingly contrived smidgen of drama near the end and some of the syrupy scenes that followed, but none of that was annoying enough to negate how good the rest of this book made me feel. I'm so glad to hear that Harrison is coming back to Plum Valley next! Wyatt did that man wrong on so many levels. I can't wait to meet his forever person.
Book safety, content warnings, and tropes down below. I’m no longer afraid to be different, not when I’m finally being me. I spent too long being somebody else and hating myself for it.
This dang book made me tear up from the sweetness and kindness, and I don’t think that has ever happened to me before. Just the nicest, most beautiful, relatively straightforward love story ever, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I’d been wanting to read this book for a while because it’s one of the author’s (very few) books that are safe for me. I’m sad it took me so long to get around go it.
Bo is an amazing character and I’ve heard and seen lots of well-deserved love for them, but I just want to highlight Jameson too. What a mensch. He just wanted to learn and be the best ally (and boyfriend) he could be, while also acknowledging that he could never *actually* understand Bo and their experience with coming out and being genderqueer. He was just so accepting of everyone, including himself, which made his sexual awakening relatively pain-free. “You are courageous every single day. Every day. Because the world you walk through is one so few people will ever understand, and you do it with your head held high. You’re gorgeous and caring and fierce. And I’m so fucking glad I found you.”
Bo did not have an easy go of it growing up, and the fact that they managed to let go of so much hate and break out of the vicious cycle of their family and become someone kind and good? Freaking impressive. And I know it’s fiction, but real people do this all the time too, and I can’t imagine many things being more challenging. Courage, dear heart.
I absolutely loved this book and recommend it lots.

Overall Opinion I have to say first of all, that Bo is simply my favourite Emmy Sanders character and I just adore them with all my soul! It was such a beautiful book, like a big warm hug, with low angst and heartwarming MCs. Jameson was so wonderful to Bo, seeing them for who they are completely and unconditionally, which is so lovely for Bo because of their unaccepting family. It was so full of love and romance and spice and an all-around sweet book. I am obsessed with how in awe Jameson was every time Bo was on stage and also when they were off stage as well, and I loved how he easily accepted his pansexuality. Overall this book was another awesome Emmy read and I cannot wait for the next one!

3.5 stars. I haven't read the other books in this series as they didn't really grab me. I just wanted to read this one because of the queer, non binary and pansexual MC's, Bo and Jameson.
This was a sweet book, a bit like a Hallmark movie but with some decent smut and lacy jockstraps.
Emmy did a really nice job of exploring the themes of gender identity and expression here without it venturing into 'after-school special' territory.
It didn't hold my interest the whole way, so I skimmed bits and pieces, but overall, it was ok if you're looking for an easy, sweet and feel good read with 'unconventional' MC's.
"You make me feel safe. Safe to be with you. Safe to be myself with you. I’ve never had anyone look at me the way you do, like you really do like everythin’ you’re seein’, inside and out."
HOW DARE EMMY WRITE A COUPLE THIS PERFECT??? I'm out here fully simping for an NB cabaret performer and their previously straight bartender boyfriend (and honestly, how can i not, the cell block tango, PLZ)🥹🥹🥹
These two are my absolute FAVOURITE. I LOVE THEM, YOUR HONOR.
I could not see anything topping Fool Hearts, but along came Bo and Jamie 😭😭😭. These two were so amazing that I basically highlighted the entire book. Jameson is the greenest of green flags. He was just so thoughtful and beautiful whilst also having a super hot possessive streak (BRAVO). Bo was soooo well fleshed out in this, their journey had me sobbing far too much for a grown ass woman. The tenderness of this relationship had me in fucking pieces. Another one for the soul mates list, I'll think about them forever 🫶🫶
Oh how I loved this book! Jameson takes a bartending job in a Cabaret bar. His world is forever changed when enby performer Bo takes the stage.
Jamie was so sweet!!! He did research and stopped Bo’s very wanted advances so they could sit and talk first - he asked thoughtful questions! He kept his eyes on Bo’s face making sure they were enjoying every moment. Talk about Mr. Right?! His pan awakening didn’t shake him much and I really loved the conversation he had with his brother about it.
Bo’s journey was more about letting go of the past and accepting that they were deserving of this very loving man. I haven’t read any of the other books in this series (yet!) but I appreciated seeing bits of other stories woven in to Bo’s. The sense of community and found family was beautiful and I imagine especially important in a place like Plum Valley Texas.
The romantic moments were swoon-worthy and more than once I had tears in my eyes. This is definitely my new favourite from Emmy Sanders.
I received an advanced copy for review - all opinions are my own.
One of the most profound statements I think I've ever read and one I'll be taking into my classroom. And here, so wonderfully exemplified by the beautiful Bo. I adore this series and their epic sized love (although I'm devastated to find out the last in this series is NOT available on Audible 😢)!
A VERY different setting to the other books in this series. We move away from Plum Valley Texas to a cabaret club in Chicago. If you want a mental visual ... think' "Burlesque"! But as always, the characters in the whole series are beautifully intertwined with each other.
I love how Jameson's attraction towards Bo leaps right off the page with the chemistry between these two next level. 🔥
Sanders gives an education in each book on members of the LGBQT spectrum and she hasn't held back here. This time digging into this character's experiences, both childhood and adult, with the realisation they are non binary.
And Jameson, who previously thought he was straight, is just so open and accepting of the diversity surrounding gender - he's an example for us all. 🏳️🌈
Jameson wiping away Bo's tears was perhaps one of the sweetest scenes I think I've read. 😭
Jameson's twin brother gives us the quote above and also one of the laugh out loud moments in the book.
Whilst the first half of this book was a little bit idealistic for my taste, it was enjoyable enough but I don’t know what happened in the second half.
The story has zero plot, zero character development, zero anything really. The second half was so far fetched I’ve given myself a headache from rolling my eyes so much.
Bo goes to plum valley for a visit, gets upset as predicted and Jameson flies over at the drop of a hat to comfort them in person? They were due home in 5 days. He left his job in the lurch. It was so overbearing and bizarre and ridiculous I just couldn’t.
89% had me raging. It felt like the author suddenly realised that their relationship had faced zero hurdles so just made up a ridiculous non-situation.
I would have liked to see Bo’s journey from when they were younger and their actual character development but we got none of that in this book. It was a shame because it felt like a missed opportunity and would have actually been interesting to read.
4.5⭐️ Adorable, sexy, and syrupy sweet without being cheesy or over the top. Emmy Sanders is such a great writer. I loved how she portrayed Bo, a non-binary character, with so much regard and respect. And Jameson was so swoon you’ll need a fainting couch reading this one. Truly a beautiful story.
I have fallen head over heels for Bo and Jameson (it doesn’t hurt that Bo calls him Jamie🤭🤭🤭)!
This was simply divine! The thoughtfulness and respect given to Bo’s character and the way Emmy wrote Jamie was so emotionally fulfilling. Bo is non-binary and while Jamie had no experience with someone like Bo and had only ever dated cis women, he treated Bo with such care and kindness he was always considerate of their feelings and identity. Jamie made sure to ask question and do his research. He was also wildly open with his communication. He was so vulnerable. It made his character so much more sexy and irresistible! He was a dream! I also appreciated how he really evaluated his attraction to Bo - he took us seriously and really did some internal work to make sure he was in to for all the right reasons!!
Bo - sweet, loving, brave Bo!! I adore the character arc for them!! They were finally at a point where they accepted nothing less than they deserved and were unapologetically themselves! They set boundaries even when it was painful but they knew they were worthy of love and acceptance. I love how Bo never made Jamie feel silly or naive. They embraced him with such openness even though they knew they could get hurt. I also loved how Bo set out to make right all the mistakes they’d made. They were so remorseful and definitely did the work to do better!
The passion and emotion were just beautiful!! They way Bo and Jamie gave each other their truth made their intimacy truly powerful! Also, the way Jamie embraced his new understanding of his own sexuality was incredibly moving. The love his family showed him and Bo was the best!!
I love that we got to go back to Plum Valley and see the rest of the crew!! This series is brilliant!!
New favorite!!! LOOOOVED!!! I adore Jamie and Bo! This book makes me so so happy and giddy. Plot is simple, light, and swoony. I fell in love with Jameson, he is the perfect boyfriend, he was so kind, caring and respectful of Bo. This is a book I see myself re reading, I’m still smiling at the warm feeling this is giving me.
Jameson Wright grew up in a loving supportive home in Chicago. Always looking for the next adventure and not settling for anything that didn’t feel right. Didn’t matter what it was, whether it was a job, or a girlfriend, his twin brother Grant, a schoolteacher, always told him he was flighty, always moving on to the next, thing, or someone else.
Newly qualified as a Mixologist (never heard of that job before) he has just started as the new Bartender at ‘Gerties’ a venue that offers music and cabaret shows every evening.
On his second night on shift his attention is riveted on a performance by a man, in a top hat, long legs in fishnet tights, singing a Liza Minnelli’s song from ‘Cabaret’. His Co worker tells him “that’s Bo”.
Next evening on duty Bo stops by the bar and asks for some water and introduces himself, “Hi I’m Bo”. “Hi, I’m Jameson, good to meet you man”. “Pleased to meet you too, but I’m not a man”.
And so, Jameson finds himself at the start of another interesting adventure.
***************
Loved the cover of “Courageous Hearts”, that’s how I ended up starting this series at Book 5, so I’ve not read this author or series before.
I liked this story of Jameson a 30 years old city boy from Chicago with a nice supportive family, and Bo, a 23 year old from cowboy territory, Plum Valley, Texas. He left Texas to get away from his abusive homophobic, dysfunctional family.
The atmosphere at ‘Gerties’ made for a lovely work environment and led to great friendships between the staff and owner.
There were a few interesting background relationships involving side Characters which lent interest to the story, couple dealing with infertility, Big Brother/Little Brother mentoring, male friends in a 3some, growing up in a 2Dad family.
If my KU and TBR lists weren’t so long at this time I’d be looking to read more in this series by Emmy Sanders now, but I may get on to them later.
So I’m starting to think that Emmy Sanders can’t write a book that I don’t love. Whether it’s about cowboys, adult entertainers or a non-binary cabaret singer I love it all! This is book 5 in the series and I have only read book 4. I absolutely was not lost by not having read the others but I’m sure the experience with all the side characters is more fulfilling if you’ve read them. The others are absolutely on my never-ending TBR list!
This is different from the other books in the series as most of this book does not actually take place in Plum Valley except for a small portion. We follow the love story of Jameson and Bo. It was a slower start for me but as soon as these characters met each other I started to love them! Jameson was so incredibly understanding with Bo being non-binary and right from the beginning he did his best to make sure he knew exactly what to say by researching and asking questions to make sure Bo was comfortable. I haven’t read too many books with non-binary characters but I felt like this one was really well done.
There is some angst in this book with Bo and their family not accepting them and a little bit of a third act misunderstanding. I felt like the misunderstanding was believable and ended up being cleared up pretty quickly thankfully.
I felt like their relationship progressed very well and didn’t feel too rushed at all. They just fit together so well. The HEA was beautiful and I absolutely teared up while reading the epilogue. I absolutely loved the meaning of the book title. I always love when the author works the book title into the story. Overall, I absolutely recommend this book and can’t wait to read more in this series!
CW (from author) : homophobia, the misgendering and deadnaming of a main character, the mention of infertility struggles for a side character, and the mention of past parental abuse. Please take caution if this subject matter may be triggering for you.
CW: mentions of parent death (past), mention of parent abandonment (past), mentions of bullying.

This is the fifth book in the Plum Valley Cowboys series. I love that Sanders features a nonbinary protagonist in this book. After years of denying their gender identity and sexuality, Bo is a proud enby who performs cabaret songs. Bo is also trying to make up for past actions. Bo relocated from Texas to Chicago four years ago. Bo is confident and sassy onstage and shy/bashful offstage. It’s apparent that Sanders put a lot of thoughtfulness and care in Bo’s character.
Aptly named Jameson is a new bartender at Gertie’s Cabaret in his hometown of Chicago. Jameson’s relationships with women don’t last very long. He’s never been in love. He’s not willing to settle for anyone other than the “one.” That said, Jameson has a huge heart.
Jameson sees Bo perform on stage and is instantly impressed by them. Jameson provides convert to Bo during a vulnerable moment at work and the pair become friends. Jameson’s attraction to Bo blossoms after seeing them ride a mechanical bull one night. (Let’s not forget the lace either). The pair eventually become lovers. I really appreciated how open and accepting Jameson is about his newfound pansexuality. They are some steamy scenes in this book! My gah! There’s a slight age gap between them (7 years) but Jameson’s stance on strong communication serves them well. Seeing this couple fall in love was really special. They are so very sweet and beautiful to/for one another.
Sanders does a really good job of exploring the topic of growth in this story. There are lots of emotions in this book and they all serve a purpose. Diesel, Bo’s brother, has some growing to do in terms of acceptance and/or tolerance. It was disheartening that he continues to use Bo’s deadname and refuse to accept them throughout the story. There was a spark of hope in the epilogue, however.
There is a (mostly) stellar cast of characters in this book. It was nice getting glimpses of some of the other couples from the series as well. Even though this book is part of a series, it can be read as a standalone. If you’re a fan of cowboys, cabaret, and communication, this is definitely the book for you!
Bo moved from their small town of Plum Valley to live their authentic life and overcome some of their past regrets. They meet Jameson at the cabaret bar where they both work, and sparks fly instantly.
Happy tears everywhere. Bo is such a dang sweetheart and I love how Jameson is just a big old softie. This is what relationships are made of! Honest and open communication. I love how much they adore and support each other, just couple goals. Bo is a character I was already half in love with before starting this book. Experiencing their internalized homophobia, coming out, and living as their true selves through this series was such a journey. It made me so happy to see them loving life and finding their soulmate. Jameson was so sweet and took the time to understand Bo. Doing outside research, asking meaningful questions, always having that line of communication open, he was a swoon worthy partner.
The majority of this story takes place in Chicago, but they do travel to Plum Valley for a week or so. It always makes me happy to see all the other couples living their best lives. While I wish there was a little more Plum Valley, I adore this book. It's like a warm hug. A little cheesy at times, but it made me so happy. Here's to the next Plum Valley love affair!

4.5 stars. Really sweet relationship development with truly excellent non-binary representation and a lovely pan-awakening. Bo is a charming character with a difficult family history, on a journey to really become themself, so much stronger than they realised and kind and vulnerable. Jameson was amazingly supportive. I hadn't read the other books in this series but that didn’t detract from this story. I received a complimentary copy of this book and am happy to leave a voluntary review.
This book is perfect if you’re after something with a similar sweetness to Gravity by Tal Bauer, and just pure lovely vibes.
THE PREMISE: a not-as-straight-as-he-thought bartender sees a sweetheart enby perform cabaret and is instantly down bad.
TROPES & VIBES: - *Instalove of my life* - Both Bo and Jamie are genuinely gorgeous. Would take a bullet for either - Non-binary main character - Pan-awakening
The book that made me fall in love with this series all over again.
I was so hooked on both Jameson and Bo. A walking green flag who communicates as if his life depends on him and a touchstarved mc figuring out that love is also something he can believe in. What more do I need to say? I loved Gertie's. The bar felt so vivid that I wish I could walk in and spend an evening there.
Jameson and Bo felt authentic in how their identities and sexuality were represented. I loved that the story wasn’t about giving explanations but about showing how two people find love together. The representation was woven naturally into their journey, and it gave the romance extra depth without taking the focus away from their connection.
The overall vibe of the story was gentle, full of green flags, and left me smiling. The only part that didn’t land for me was the big freak out at the end, which felt a little over the top compared to the rest of the book’s softer tone.
I adored this book. It’s the one that made me fall in love with the series all over again, and I’ll be shouting about Jameson and Bo to anyone who loves a romance that feels both fun and heartfelt.

"You make me feel safe. Safe to be myself with you."
Since we started to get to know Bo better in Swan Hearts, I was looking forward to reading their story. To me, Bo is the best character in the series and they got a great redemption arc. They had a tough childhood with an unsupportive family (except for aunt Sara, we love her!) and then went through a journey of self-acceptance. But now, they're fierce and unapologetically themself and it's what we love to see. Jameson is also a wonderful character. He is a caring person who values communication and honesty, he's one of the best book boyfriends out there!
Jamie and Bo are drawn to each other at first sight. They are cute together, so soft and gentle. Their relationship is very natural, they have instant-chemistry but it's not insta-love (yay!) They are a sexy, sensual and beautiful couple. Their kisses and lovemaking are soft and primal at the same time, they're really a perfect match whether it's physically or emotionally. They can't get enough of each other and the lace lingerie doesn't help! They fell and they fell fast and hard.
I love how Jamie naturally assumes his attraction to Bo and eventually his pansexuality, without panicking, only 2 seconds of questioning. I also love how he was willing to educate himself to avoid offending Bo. He was just afraid to make another mistake after misgendering them when they met. It was very thoughtful and sweet of him.
I was sooo happy to return to Plum Valley at some point. I missed the town and all the characters we know and love. The appearances of previous characters is something I really enjoy when I read a series.
“I want you,” he says simply. “All the pieces of you.”
I'm so glad that Bo finally got there happily ever after and found their Mr. Wright (see what I did!) to cuddle tightly!
Courageous Hearts is the fifth book in the Plum Valley Cowboys series. It might be my favourite of the series so far.
Jameson is hired in a cabaret bar in Chicago as a bartender where he meets Bo who performs on stage. He is immediately intrigued by their performance, style and singing voice. The more they get to know each other as friends, the more Jameson realises his attraction towards Bo.
Once again, I found that each character was so unique and well written. Jameson prioritized communication by making sure that Bo felt comfortable and respected. He was caring, trustworthy and emphasized that he wanted Bo to be themself. He took the time to do research and asked questions to make sure Bo always felt valued. Bo was such a special character. They are nonbinary and experienced a lot of hard times in the past because of how their family felt about their identity. They were caring, fierce and courageous. I loved how they prioritized their mental health over bending to other people’s discomfort. They were proud of who they are and chose to be true to themself.
In my opinion, Jameson is the ultimate book boyfriend 😍. I loved the development of their relationship, how from the start, they communicated their desire to have something real and not only a quick hook-up. They prioritized each other and were interested in learning more about the other’s desires and needs.
It was fun to see characters from previous books such as Coop who is Bo’s stepsibling and his two partners, Will and Tru. I highly recommend the book.
I’ve been curious about Bo since they were introduced in the previous books, and I am so glad they got their own love story. Jameson was perfect for them, a true romantic who’s been waiting for “the one.” And once he meets Bo, he is all in. Their love story is tender, intimate, and just beautifully written. Both characters, but especially Bo, truly embody the title; they are brave in their convictions and in their actions. This was almost 5 stars, but there was an unnecessary misunderstanding towards the end that frustrated me. Luckily, it was resolved within a few pages. I also wish the epilogue was a bit longer. A lot of events are mentioned in the epilogue that I would have liked to see on page, rather than just referenced. Nevertheless, I did very much enjoy this, and am looking forward to the next (the final) installment.
A solid four stars and an improvement from the last one. I really thought we would have the miscommunication thingy again AND a third act break up, and almost gave up, but it lasted all of five pages, if I'm not mistaken. The author told a beautiful story and gave us a better peek at Bo's life when they were still living in Plum Valley. Jameson was amazing and such a pure soul. They were perfect for each other.
[I received a digital arc for an honest review] Courageous Hearts by Emmy Sanders is the fifth book in her Plum Valley series. This can be read and enjoyed as a standalone, but all the cameos from previous characters will mean much more to you if you've read them! "Bo,"I sigh out, wondering how one person can feel so right tucked against me, like they were made to fit. "I don't think I'll ever get enough of you."
I loved Bo and Jameson ! Bo wasn't the nicest growing up in order to hide their own nonbinary identity from their homophobic brother and father but now that they have accepted themselves as they are they try their hardest to make up for their past. I just love everything about Bo. The way they were confident on stage but shy and bashful off it. The relationship they had with their friends and the way they gave back to the younger community. Jameson was a sweetheart who followed his heart. He had such a big heart and was kind and accepting. He always saw himself as straight but takes a good look at his reactions towards Bo and instead of running from them, accepts them. I loved how close he was to his mother and twin brother and that he felt comfortable talking to them. Jameson is mine. He accepted me effortlessly and without question. He sees me. He makes me feel bolder and more confident in myself. In us. He makes me ridiculously happy.
I seriously loved them together. They were flirting and the sexual tension between them in the beginning was great. There is a good balance between domestic type moments from cooking together or out and about and the hot and heavy. The intimacy between them is absolutely delicious, the connection between them is intense from the start. "I want you," he says simply. "All the pieces of you."
The story is pretty low angst with none of the dramatic / conflict moments drawn out. This is in thanks to the fact that Jameson believes that communication in all aspects of one's life is important. This rubs off on Bo and helps them when confronting their past back in Plum Valley. Therefore whenever a problem does arise they talk instead of assuming or avoiding the situation.
I absolutely loved Courageous Hearts by Emmy Sanders and have zero complaints. A queer romance with a Pan MC, a Nonbinary MC, musicals, love bites, cuddles, beach moments, homemade pizza, family, friendships, finding your person and a happily ever after.
I’m writing this review a few weeks after finishing the book, but I was too emotional right after to properly write a review.
I can’t really explain what this book did to me.
It was simply beautiful. From start to finish.
The non-binary rep, the pan awakening, the found family, the pure love and devotion Jameson feels from the very start. And Bo… I can’t even describe just how I felt for them. Emmy wrote a character I won’t be able to forget, that’s for sure.
Breathtaking. Wow.
