Secret Agent Analyst

Rate this book
Anthony Dare, Secret Agent Extraordinaire, is going to save the world. Again.

Anthony Dare is suave and sophisticated, cool under pressure and hotter than most supervillains can handle. He never fails to walk away from a mission – even when his field partners fail to come home. However, Anthony’s next mission against the evil supervillain Cicero includes an unwelcome addition – one not even Anthony is sure he can handle. The last thing Anthony needs is a brand-new, untested, rather attractive field partner.

Too bad his boss has another plan entirely…

Elliot Bichler, Analyst and Supervillain Expert, is going to save the world. Maybe.

Elliot Bichler never planned to go into the field; he’s content to sit at his safe desk in his safe cubicle. But he’s spent his entire career watching Anthony save the day without saving the intel Elliot and his fellow analysts need. Being assigned as Anthony’s newest field partner might be dangerous – but Elliot isn’t going to waste the chance to finally point Anthony in the right direction – or maybe secure that intel himself.

Just as long as he doesn’t die in the process…

They’ll save the world. But first, they’ll need to save each other.

Secret Agent Analyst is a m/m novel that’s more romantic comedy than spy thriller. It includes double agents, supervillains with terrible taste in design, and a very hungry Kraken.

Penelope Peters wrote her first story at the age of nine, based on a dream she couldn’t shake. This is probably why most of her romances usually include the weird and whimsical. Penelope has been happily married to her college sweetheart for two decades, which is probably why her romances are practically guaranteed happy endings. Armed with her two kids, her husband, and her somewhat-trusty laptop, Pen’s traveled to more countries than you can count on two hands. (She’s very close to filling up that third.) Currently Penelope has returned to the land of her birth (somewhat reluctantly), where she is surrounded by trees, taco trucks, and her collection of counted cross stitch kits.

You can find Penelope on Facebook (www.facebook.com/PenelopePetersAuthor), Twitter (@penelope_writes), Tumblr (azriona – it’s her personal account, you are hereby warned), and her website (www.penelope-peters.com), where you can learn about how to receive updates and ARCs.

DNF @ 25%.

This is an awful spy thriller. Though, the blurb describes it as “more romantic comedy than spy thriller”, to be fair. Unfortunately, it also an awful romcom.

I’ve read Penelope Peters once before and was pleasantly surprised. In this case, I’m unpleasantly surprised. Did I actually expect that I would find it funny? Not really. Did I think the top agent and MC of this story would have a trail of dead partners? Not really. Did I think he would plan to leave their flight attendant to fend for herself in deboarding their blown up plane… even though she was unconscious?! And then planned to abandon her, still unconscious, in the middle of the desert? Definitely not. Which part does that fall under? Spy thriller or romcom?

Also, 25% in and I still haven’t encountered this supervillain that wants to turn the sky pink, or the promised kraken.

A Joyfully Jay review.

4.25 stars

Secret Agent Analyst is basically a cross between James Bond and Get Smart. An absurd evil villain provides the comedy, while a light romance unfolds between Anthony and Elliot. There isn’t always a lot of depth on display, but in the end, I enjoyed the interplay between the main characters and the well-paced narrative.

The romance between Elliot and Anthony is relatively weak and moves far too fast. I wish it had been more fleshed out and given a bit of room to breathe, but they work well as partners and friends and I enjoyed their banter. Anthony’s exploits are ridiculous and that’s the point, especially as poor Elliot is dragged from one dangerous situation to another. Yet Elliot is far from helpless and I appreciated that he ended up holding his own against Anthony and the cadre of evil-doers they confronted. Truthfully, the attempted explanations of Cicero’s supposedly genius plans are some of the book’s funniest moments. From genetically modifying sheep to have thumbs, to using drones to disrupt social media, Cicero’s plans are as absurd as they are overly complex and their descriptions kept the overall flow of the book from becoming stale or too serious.

What in Wattpad hell??

Let me summarize an *actual* scene from the book real quick:
Elliot: *is laying on Anthony after escaping from a literal kraken*
Elliot: *feels Anthony's phone* oh yeah i need your number
Anthony: oh uh, i don't actually have my phone w/me rn
Elliot: *realization dawns* ohh uhhh it's because of the mission right?? 'cause it's definitely not me
Anthony: yep! just gimme a min

Aaaaaand then the book just keeps giving you random shit and kisses. Quite literally: jet packs! kissing! clones! kissing! helicopter chases! kissing! them finally figuring out the *very obvious* plot! kissing! sugar-sweet ending when they apparently get laid "every night and most mornings" for a month! kissing!

No wonder the author says she gets her ideas in her dreams. I can't imagine where else you would be delusional enough to come with shit like this.

Okay, I fucking loved this. It's delightfully funny, a great parody of spy movies and a great romance. And even when it's clearly a lampoon it manages to have some extremely tense moments... in between bouts of laughter :P

I mean, seriously, they are in the secret base, having a snack at the employee's lounge, and this happens
Elliot read the noticeboard next to the snack machine while he peeled his banana. Half the board was cork, with all the typical notices one expected to see. The other half was a whiteboard, with several magnetized markers attached. Evil Plan Ideas—Best Idea Gets an Amazon Gift Card! A few were scratched out, but Elliot read the rest with increasing amounts of disbelief.

Destroy all the world’s kelp. (Yusef from accounting)
Virus that erases everyone’s Contact Lists in their phones. (Nikolai from R&D)
Autocorrect changes everything to sexual innuendo. (Seb from Security)
Brainwash everyone into remembering a movie that doesn’t exist. (Goncharov, HR)

Elliot shook his head. “Is he serious?” he wondered aloud.

The dialogues are marvellous, truly fantastic. and the banter, OMG! the banter is perfect! Great villain's monologues, too :P
“I imagine,” said Anthony blithely, as if enemy guards captured him every week, “that you’re holding the radio because you’re about to call in your discovery of two spies in your labs.”

The guard rolled his eyes. “Uh, no, I’m holding my radio because you’ve both been arguing for so long that I already did.”

Which was when, in a spectacular show of excellent timing, the cavalry appeared behind him.

“Ah,” said Anthony, reasonably lifting his hands in surrender. “Well then. Carry on.”

“Um, sorry, no,” said Elliot from behind Anthony. “What’s going on here?”

The guard looked at Anthony. “Who’s he?”

“He’s new,” Anthony apologized.

“Yes!” chirped Elliot. “I’m new. It’s my first time being caught in a super villain’s secret underground base. Can you tell me what’s happening? In excruciating detail, please, take your time while we stand here in this otherwise very unimportant room where I can’t do anything but listen to you.”

The guard looked back at Anthony. “Don’t you brief your partners on this sort of thing anymore?”

The characters are delightful. At first, I was a bit on Elliott's side, tbh, and considered Anthony an arrogant prick with fewer brains than a squished ant. But we slowly get to know him and see that he's not as shallow as we were led to believe at first. And we end up loving him, of course ♥

I like how the romance advanced, how they refused to acknowledge that they actually like each other, and how Anthony keeps messing up by telling the truth without telling all the truth. They eventually get it, though *dies laughing*

There are epic battles, secret bases, ridiculous supervillain plots. rockets, clones and even a Kraken! C'mon, you know you want to read this! Just do it! :P

This is a first read for this author with this book, arc provided to me by the author.

A story for Anthony and Elliot in a partnership to capture the baddies of the world. Or the elusive Cicero who Anthony hadn’t managed to capture yet but hed promised his partner before he died.
A sad start to the book with Anthony going to work without his partner. I noted the super secret entrance to the DVM and thought it cool and intriguing start.
A not so good first meeting between both characters in an elevator no less.
Its a race against time with the world in danger and only Anthony can stop Cociro. Scenes play out and one minute their talking then the next there’s an explosion.
Adventures in a foreign country, enemies trying to kill them hmm yeah Elliot wasn’t happy about going on the mission with Anthony when he’s not been trained. Anthony has big noted himself with his successes but he’s also down to earth on his feelings he keeps secret from other people. Anthony has definitely creative ways of getting around for transport. The two characters have a huge sizzle going between them that rocks their world on occasions. 😉

“Because...” Anthony was at a loss. “Because if it’s the last kiss, I want to remember it as being perfect.” Elliot pulled himself up so that his face was even with Anthony’s. “You asshole. It doesn’t have to be perfect.”

This book has its serious and its funny moments. A twist or two that’s included that keeps you guessing what will happen next. Anthony and and Elliot are great together and an have a fantastic relationship of hate and love with lots of sassiness. A fantastic ending to the book for them both. This is a fun book to read and not to be taken to seriously with scenes.

calling this a romcom when the romance is unbelievable and underdeveloped and when its not funny at all should be a crime tbh

Anthony Dare is the super hero agent for DVM (Department of Villain Monitorization). He’s always welcomed back after an assignment as the hero, whether it goes well or not. He’s lost a few partners along the way, but it doesn’t matter to those in the organization. Even though Anthony appears pompous, deep down inside it bothers him. With the loss of Enrique, his last partner, it left him feeling with anger, disappointment and guilt. But Anthony continues to put on a facade.

Elliot Bichler is a top notch supervillain analyst and he’s fine with that. He has his own special way that he aids the agents. He reads and analyses their reports, talks with them face to face and he makes friends with them. Something Anthony has never taken advantage of.

Anthony has an arch nemesis Cicero, but the code of the DVM is “get him next time”, “detain, never eliminate”, “killing only makes us like them.” Cicero apparently has some wacky ideas on how to take over the world and he has Archibald O’Leary bank rolling him.

Bea is the head of DVM and when it comes to Cicero and now Archibald O’Leary she decides to send Anthony and Elliot on the assignment to Bulgaria. Well, that’s not going to work. Anthony and Elliot are already butting heads and surely don’t see eye to eye. This is just not Elliot’s type of gig!

As Anthony and Elliot, face all kinds of ridiculous danger: jumping from planes; rescuing several women; riding ATV’s in the desert; a kraken; sheep clones, and being chased by Cicero and his henchmen, something between them starts to develop.
For Anthony the assignment becomes more difficult as he has to carry out an order that he knows is wrong.

Penelope Peters brings a fun, fast, explosive, action packed, adventurous tale with “Secret Agent Analyst.” Elliot is smart as far as being an analyst, but he just doesn’t realize he can handle so much more. He also becomes someone Anthony can lean on.
The story does have a little serious side when Anthony thinks about his former partner and now his concerns for Elliot. He has some difficult situations to accept. Two other characters that make this tale fun are Daria Halloumi and scientist Zayna. Daria especially brings lot’s of excitement to the story.

I highly recommend “Secret Agent Analyst” for those that like comedy with super heroes and just a little seriousness. This is my first read by Penelope Peters and I think she created some great character for this fun read.

Cicero was a serial ‘want to take over the world’ supervillain, who, apart from wanting to make the moon pink, also cost the world’s best secret agent, Anthony Dare, many working partners. Feeling jaded, Anthony returns to the office to lick his wounds, only to be told that the untrained, un-field-ready analyst Elliot is his new partner. Both men are surprised, and despite some physical attraction - for valid reasons, neither wants the other as a partner. Nevertheless, they must make the best of it, and soon learn that each brings qualities to the party.
Secret Agent Analysis is a romantic sleuthing comedy that has the outlook of 007 and the tongue-in-cheek quirkiness of Police Squad. And it was a story that I thoroughly enjoyed.
The story is told in the third person from the viewpoints of Anthony and Elliot. I received the review copy pre-final-edit - therefore, I will not comment on anything technical. The scene setting was enough to form a mental picture, but the dialogue was the best addition. I found it impossible not to smile at the cliché, snark, sarcasm and monologuing between the characters.
Anthony is the stereotypical suave, gadget-packed, sophisticated agent people fall at the feet of. And certain scenes are as expected as the ‘Starship Enterprise’ rising out of the clouds to specific music. Elliot is the analyst who has a point to make to the agent unwilling to take advantage of their information, and I loved his entrance into the story. Elliot has grit and is the one that comedy sketches would label ‘The intelligent one’. His interactions with Anthony are superb. As for the more expansive cast, they are as varied as they are clichéd. However, Cicero is the trickster, supervillain scene stealer with some action and dialogue gems.
Some plot twists aren’t exactly a surprise, but the journey to the conclusion is entertaining, and packed with dramatic, over-the-top and sweet gestures. I found this story - one to embrace the irony, abandon logic and go with the flow because all the blips that cross your mind while reading are all answered by the end. Secret Agent Analyst is a ride written by an author with a sense of humor that I like.

An enjoyable M/M secret agent romance!

Entertaining, hard to put down, quick and easy read, with interesting well rounded characters who had flaws as well as strengths, lots of laugh out loud moments, banter, tension and wit. I loved the believable relationship between the main characters, who liked each other for more than just looks and grew fond of each other as they worked together, and all the little details to bring the world around them to life. After a rough patch of picking up books and being disappointed or not finishing them, reading this honestly made my year <3

If you like characters thrown outside their comfort zone, and an easy back and forth between characters who don't like each other at first but grow closer as they adventure together, you'll probably like Secret Agent Analyst as much as I did.

*I am voluntarily leaving this review after having received a free copy of this book.*

The wit! The charm! The banter! This book was so fun. I love a comical spin on a genre that is typically more serious, and this book definitely delivered on that. The plot itself, though, left something to be desired. I still don’t fully understand the creation of the DVM, the motive of the “Big Bad,” and a few other things that I don’t wanna mention because they’re spoiler-y. There were more than a few coincidences that kept the plot moving, too. And although Elliot and Anthony were quite cute, I don’t really buy that they worked out their differences and initial lack of respect for each other in such a short amount of time. I still think this book is worth a read, though. If nothing else, it will definitely make you laugh!

I'm being generous with a 4 star. I would've given it 3.75 or 3.50.

It has a rough start and I had to be patient with both.

I think my biggest issue is the pace. It moves a lot faster than I'm used to. I think it would benefit if there was more time between anthony and elliot. I liked the banter and dialogue but it just wasn't enough.

The evil plots were funny and the explanations at the end kinda made sense if you didn't think too hard.

I would recommend it for a light easy read and be able to just go with the flow.

This book keeps you laughing, from the ridiculous situations involving the supervillain, to the wonderful banter between Anthony and Elliot. I love the absurd goals Cicero has! The adventure and romance in this story tie in with the humour so well, that this becomes a book that's impossible to put down. Most entertaining!

This was just hilarious. This book is a typical, comedic spy story (if you read Spy School as a kid, you'll love this one). It's immature and cliche - and it knows it's immature and cliche. Hilarious, enjoyable read with likeable characters and absurdly incompetent villains. Loved it.

I won't rate this because truly I wasn't able to suspend disbelief enough to enjoy or appreciate this book. Some may find it cute and amusing and funny, but I had a difficult time buying into it. YMMV
