Very minor plot spoilers for book 1 and book 2 included below :)
What an ending! This duet was amazing--it was spicy and a little heartbreaking at times, with some really surprising action sequences. Schlosser is not afraid to ~unalive~ characters, which really added to the shock-factor and kept me reading quickly. This book has spice, fated mates, a likable FMC, a morally gray MMC, "touch her and die" with "I hate everyone but her" energy, and time travel between realms and different time periods (spanning from hundreds of thousands of years ago to present day).
Quick plot recap - In book 1, we met Hannah, a human in her 20's who lives and works on a maple farm in VT with her parents, who has fallen sick with a mysterious illness causing her body to rapidly shut down. As Hannah gets increasingly sick with no diagnosis, a mysterious stranger named Ellister turns up on their farm (dressed in a weird outfit and unfamiliar with human colloquialisms-lol), demanding he needs a meeting with Hannah's father. Turns out, Ellister is a Fae living amongst the exiled Dark Fae. Decades ago, Ellister made a bargain with one of Hannah's ancestors that demands the life of one of their descendants, so as it happens, Ellister is there to collect Hannah's life and make sure that her mysterious illness (which is really an illness stemming from the bargain) kills her. Unfortunately for Ellister, he quickly realizes Hannah is his fated mate who he is not only soul-bonded to, but he will also die if his fated mate dies. This results in Ellister desperately trying to find a way to keep Hannah alive and away from his evil "king."
In book 2, we see Ellister and Hannah build their relationship further and establish their bond, while simultaneously trying desperately to save Hannah from death. Many of these attempts to save Hannah involve time travel (which is one of Ellister's powers), but the time travel leads to many unintended ripples caused by one change in the past. I thought there was a bit of a lull in the story around the ~50% mark. However, I thought it worked because it allowed for plenty of spicy scenes and it lulled the reader into a false sense of complacency where you believe that Ellister and Hannah are "safe," but then Ellister and Hannah are captured and everything gets a little crazy. Learning how the Lost Land and the lycans were established was WILD. Again, this book was super heartbreaking at times, but I'm glad Hannah and Ellister found their HEA.
I would definitely recommend this duet. I read it so quickly, and I'm so grateful that I had the opportunity to read an ARC!
