⤅ This book exemplifies the fact that good characterisation can make up for a HOST of flaws.
I remember dipping into a Milana Jacks book at some point a long time ago, then I quickly dipped back out again because the prose style grated on me. Still, I (usually) always try an author again, so I gave this one a shot. And I'm bloody glad I did.
June is a peasant summer fae living with her family when she encounters a young man in the woods. She thinks it's the commander of the Seelie King's armies - an exalted enough personage in his own right - but in fact it's the King himself, who spirits her away to court for the mating season.
Refreshingly, June spends most of the book as the exact opposite of a Mary Sue. Her commonness is emphasised at every turn: even her name, June, is frequently discussed as being a widespread name in the kingdom. She has no real ambitions, no aspirations, and I guess you could say not much personality. While that's definitely not great, what the author does do is show how a laid-back personality like this could attract a man like the King, who's so steeped in court intrigues and plotting that he really just needs a break. It actually sort of makes me think of the Camilla/Charles dynamic - her 'earthiness' is what apparently appealed to him originally, and June is definitely earthy.
The King's characterisation, though, is what gets this book most of its three stars. He's a dandy, as I think all fae should be, but he's also as powerful and manipulative as I expect a Seelie King to be. If you're going to give me an ancient fae royal as a hero, I expect him to sound like one, and Jacks managed this much better than I was expecting.
There are flashes of a plot later on in the book, but it's frankly half-baked and easily skimmed. The insta-love is also a bit weird: the King spends half the book treating June as a mistress, and then suddenly declares he wants her to be his queen, without much exposition of how he reached this decision in the first place. The fantasy world doesn't feel extraordinarily well developed either, though I understand there are many other books set in this universe so I guess I needed to have read those first to really immerse myself in it.
All told, I'd quite like to see the King's brother (flirtatious, bisexual, deeply inappropriate humour) and sister (lusty, loyal) get their own stories too.

3.75 Stars.
He was a boy, she was a girl, can I make it anymore obvious? She was a pig farmer's daughter, he was a Seelie+Unseelie King with magical mind reading, power of suggestion thoughts, trying to hold on to his mind and power, what more can I say?
Overall, till there, I like the general plot. Then we get into the nitty gritty. She was previously married, was in an abusive relationship and she doesn't want to get married again. He is your standard issue King, with rumours of a harem and what he says is law. I want you, case closed scenario.
Fine up until then, except for the fact that the book starts off with subterfuge as to who he is, coz you know, she's just an innocent, country loving gyal, so she doesn't know the face of the King, and he masquerades as his commander...up until chapter 19.
Then, she has a whole sub plot taking place, but we are none the wiser, then within the last 100 pages, it quickly develops, double crossing takes place and then we are left with they lived happily ever after. No, no they didn't coz we don't know where Queen Mother is by the end, she finally has the power but she's just his bride? Like what was the point of giving her powers if she/we don't get to experience it?
Then, this is related to the Savage series but I couldn't be bothered with its book 3 and overall, the savages play a minor role in this book.
So, smut wise. Stellar. MMC, we like them gruff and brief ala Milana Jacks style. However, the book was toooo long. I did not get the incestuous family vibes between the siblings and the plot really isn't completed by the end of the book and essentially, at the end, no one gets punished for the missing girls from the village.

I really enjoyed this one! Some parts were rushed and not explained very well, especially at the end where she got to see the past 🤔
Anyhoo, Shes a pig farmers daughter and she meets the king of the fae while she's naked and taking a bath in the river 😈😈😈😏😏😏😏 he tells her he's the commander of the army instead of telling her who he really is because he enjoyed being able to be himself for the first time in a long time 😍😍😍 I love mistaken identity shiet! So good!
I don't want to give the whole book away but her marriage to another was horrible but loved that angst! And when he gets all protective and has jpness over anyone who tries to get close to her and whwhen his horns (that not horn) shoot out (still, not that horn) when someone suggests she could have been taken from his castle during the first ball of the span 😈😈😈😈😍😍😂😂😂😂
Anyhoo, this was a different, fun read for me and I enjoyed opening my kindle to read this which I can't say the same for many other books so 🤷😂😂

This reminded me of Zodiac Academy in a lot of ways (but maybe not as well written and I thought ZA was poorly written). The story had a lot of sophomoric humor and the characters were eccentric caricatures. The Fae are more animalistic in the story, and their behaviors and speech are congruent with the world building.
There were many holes in the plot and characters who maybe had arcs but were seemingly abandoned. It just didn’t have a lot of tension and I was underwhelmed with the MC’s backstory.
The MMC was almost robotic, driven by cliches and really stunted dialogue.
I’m still not really sure how to process things like this:
“June never once complained of soreness, tiredness, hunger, or anything at all. It’s not a testament of my prowess or the level of comfort I can provide for her. It’s a testament to her character.”
Or this letter the MC sends her:
“Dear June, my letter starts. The moment I arrived at the cottage in town, I missed you and wished the juices of your p**** would have been the tea I consumed.”

The MMC was honestly just really gross. Objectified women every other sentence, and I couldn’t get through it. Maybe there’s a redemption arc, but I wouldn’t stick around to find out.

Quickish Review
Series overall: Never read Milana Jacks before but I got completely sucked into this series. It has some worldbuilding without getting too far into the weeds, spicy scenes, good chemistry between all the MCs, and humor just when I needed it. They all have some drama to keep things interesting and the MMCs all have a dark edge to them, which I enjoyed.
Book 1: good intro romance between farmer FMC and Seelie King MMC. Did the jump from lust to love make a lot of sense? Maybe not but I enjoyed it all the same.

- The characterisation, or rather, lack thereof. The heroine is a blank page. She is occasionally determined, but by and large just sits back and lets life happen to her. And by life, I mean sex.
- The contradictions:
If the King's grandmother was a Fate and Fates have to be single women, how does that work exactly?
How can a room be both tiled floor to ceiling and "under an open night sky"? Floor to ceiling implies a ceiling, surely?
Chapter 4: "I dislike small spaces"
Chapter 26: "I'm fond of small spaces"
- The extreme amount of sex. It's like a sex farce. It's actually unbelievable.
- Some of the language used implies sexual violence. There is very minimal concern for female consent. Women are treated like possessions to be traded at will.
- Frequent poor phrasing and sentence construction, e.g. "on his own time whenever I don't need him" (a tautology) or "I'm sure I'll find out whatever June is hiding quite interesting."
- The instalove, or declarations thereof, anyway. These two don't do anything much beyond fuck so it's hard to believe that this is anything more than lust.
- The rash decision making associated with said instalove. Look, rushing into marriage is stupid for anyone. For a king, it's reckless to the extreme. I'm with the Queen Mother here. A royal marriage in an absolute monarchy is political and extremely important. It impacts the entire court.

when it comes to milana jacks, the girls that get it, get it. they’re not particularly well-written books but they’re entertaining as hell. a fae pig farmer and a fae king is certainly a new take on a cinderella retelling but i liked it.

DNF @ 50% this may contain spoilers, cos I'm flabbergasted tbh.
I kinda liked where this was going. Even with the over sexual language, and the slight dubious consent, I was willing to go on.
Then, they ruined it with a declaration of love. Like this is where it's supposed to end, not said before the story goes anywhere!!
So disappointing. And the sex? Terrible. The dude kept denying her an orgasm every time he went down on her, even though she gave him a blow job, and he came with no issue.
Then, when they got down to the act, I wasn't even sure she was enjoying any of it.
And then she accepts him telling her not to take birth control, with no argument. No argument. She thinks she's the summer fling, and she's fine to get impregnated?????? Sorry, where is the fight??
For these reasons, I'm out.

One an annoying ass king, and the other a victim female who thinks she deserves nothing but still wants to get in this dudes pants. I'm not bashing on the victim mentality, but in this book it's heavily mentioned in regards to her personality. I got to page 83 before I said I can't read this anymore. So maybe it redeems itself. But I don't care enough to find out.

If your looking for a crazy obsessed H you’ve come to the right place. This is a solid read for the story. I’d have probably rated it higher but I had a bit of trouble vibing with the authors style but she wrote an amazing H here.
The heroine paled in comparison but she was ok. The H made up for anything she lacked anyway.

June is recovering from an abusive ex-marital arrangement. Used for her blood magic she became a shell of herself which led her self-confidence to plummet to the ground. She didn't feel worthy of the commander. Or the King.
But that didn't stop her from fooling around.
King En'tenne, a royal who takes interest in a small peasant girl covered in pig shit and little to no magic, courts her under the disguise of the royal commander. Mating season is approaching, and the King fully intends on announcing June as his bride-to-be, with or without his mother's approval. (Or June's for that matter)

Everything revolves around June and the King so there isn't much that we see when it comes to their world other than mating season. It's a fast-paced steamy romance with a [rushed] happy ending. The writing style isn't necessarily my favorite, a bit of the dialogue feels humanly juvenile for adult characters in another world. Oh, there's also magic unicorns with glitter watching them get intimate in a pond.

The simple fact that I finished it says much about this book. Especially if I give you the context in which for the past three months I have started countless fantasy/paranormal books and barely finished one or two of them because the writing was so disastrous.
It was an “ok book”—which, it was akin to a miracle, compared to any romance books I have attempted to read in the last months.

What. The. Heck??!
This book is nonsense! How are there so many positive reviews?!! I’m boggled. I can’t even formulate thoughts because this book was so weird.
Is there a prequel or another series of some sort that I am missing because there are so many vague references to things as if the reader should already know them. As well as some things not explained at all!
On top of that, the relationship…if you can even call it that?… is so awkward and cringey. The sex is twisted. And I don’t mean that in a dark way. Or even a kinky way. It’s just ODD. Like the way she describes anatomy and the mechanics of sex. It’s so weird! And they have a whole ‘heat’ and ‘mating season.’ Like animals. And the canon in this world is that all fae just have sex constantly and it’s not even a big deal. It’s like needing to eat and drink and breathe. It’s just weird and not interesting. And really takes away from the romance angle. It leaves it as just sex.
All the other reviewers saying the MMC is sweet and loving and seeking the FMC got it wrong. He is OBSESSED with her. From their first meeting. And it doesn’t even make sense why. Like, just tell us they’re fated (or fae’ted as if were) and I can buy it. But it’s not written that way. It’s like the author had all the ideas and just wanted to keep us in the dark and WOW us at the end, but it just didn’t work at all. Plus his dominance and her submissiveness… it just didn’t work. He kept saying ‘I’m the king; I get what I want’ and ‘June is a good little girl who does what she’s told’ in his inner monologues. And it got so old.
Also, the ending. What?! How does that even mean anything to any of us?! It was so random. This is honestly where I’d say if the writing were better and the storyline less awkward, this would’ve made a fabulous trilogy. But the way it was laid out and things occurred and important events that were only barely touched on, as well as how our characters lacked depth, it just didn’t work.
I can say I appreciate the author’s attempt and perhaps this style of writing does speak to some, but as for me, I won’t be reading more of her books. But I’m proud of myself for finishing this one because so many times I wanted to quit.
This book is nonsense! How are there so many positive reviews?!! I’m boggled. I can’t even formulate thoughts because this book was so weird.
Is there a prequel or another series of some sort that I am missing because there are so many vague references to things as if the reader should already know them. As well as some things not explained at all!
On top of that, the relationship…if you can even call it that?… is so awkward and cringey. The sex is twisted. And I don’t mean that in a dark way. Or even a kinky way. It’s just ODD. Like the way she describes anatomy and the mechanics of sex. It’s so weird! And they have a whole ‘heat’ and ‘mating season.’ Like animals. And the canon in this world is that all fae just have sex constantly and it’s not even a big deal. It’s like needing to eat and drink and breathe. It’s just weird and not interesting. And really takes away from the romance angle. It leaves it as just sex.
All the other reviewers saying the MMC is sweet and loving and seeking the FMC got it wrong. He is OBSESSED with her. From their first meeting. And it doesn’t even make sense why. Like, just tell us they’re fated (or fae’ted as if were) and I can buy it. But it’s not written that way. It’s like the author had all the ideas and just wanted to keep us in the dark and WOW us at the end, but it just didn’t work at all. Plus his dominance and her submissiveness… it just didn’t work. He kept saying ‘I’m the king; I get what I want’ and ‘June is a good little girl who does what she’s told’ in his inner monologues. And it got so old.
Also, the ending. What?! How does that even mean anything to any of us?! It was so random. This is honestly where I’d say if the writing were better and the storyline less awkward, this would’ve made a fabulous trilogy. But the way it was laid out and things occurred and important events that were only barely touched on, as well as how our characters lacked depth, it just didn’t work.

Have you ever wanted a book to work out SO badly that you put it on the back burner? This one has been sitting in my TBR pile for a hot minute, teasing me with its fancy cover and everything I know Jacks can deliver. I finally picked it yesterday, woke up at 3 for a trip to the bathroom (tmi?? dont care!) to then NOT go back to sleep. I popped my kindle back on and read until work and then have been reading on my breaks. (Working from home has the best kind of perks) Finished and was not waiting to write a review/recommendation, because lets be real, my reviews are mostly just a go or no go most of the time. I loved it! Not like, loved. It goes back to some of her early books, the tempo and twists BUT it has a lightness that I've never seen in a Jacks book. Maybe I read it in a different mood, IDK, because there is a lot of heavy here as well, it just didnt feel as weighted. The sexual freeness (that doesnt sound write lol, still going with it) was refreshing. Not having a human, with very human hangups brought this into a fantasy realm you wish you could be a part of. The down fall for me was a good portion of the beginning. The descriptive writing felt stilted and somehow just off but I felt like later it self corrected. Overall, fun read.

A wonderful story all about the fae, it is romantic and action filled you’ll love it
This is a truly wonderful read that will hold your attention from start to finish and I guarantee that you will love every moment of this wonderful story and I guarantee that this will be a book you will never forget reading, from start to finish you will enjoy every single moment of this amazing book.
He is the king and he hides this fact from her so that her feelings and her emotions are true there can be no mis interpretation that she was only acting as she was because she knew that he was a king. The time they spent together was so wonderful and being in the woods was truly beautiful and they were at peace with each other.
I guarantee that like me you will love every single moment of this book and I guarantee that from start to finish you will not be able to put this down until you reach the final page.
I assure you that you will love every moment of this book it is simply a fantastic read.

Best Book Yet!
ET’ENNE’s character is the best one yet. I loved the way this author made almost every word that came out of his mouth was possessive, dominant, hot, sexy, and funny as hell all at the same time. The chemistry between these two main characters were off the charts!
JUNE’s character on the other hand is second to his. She is sexy, sassy, smart, and loves her King and people. Put them together; and this to me, is the best book yet that I have read from this author. I wish I could have left more stars. Also, I can’t wait for June’s sisters to have their stories.
I will definitely reread this fantastic book again as well as recommend it!

Didn’t want to stop reading.
I really enjoyed this book. This is my fist time reading Milana Jacks so I wasn’t sure whether I would. The story was good and I really liked the characters. I bought the book last night and am finished this morning, yes I stayed up way too late because I wanted to keep reading. I could feel the sadness and the excitndnt coming of the characters which makes for an enjoyable experience.
The only thing that I could have done without was done the terminology during the mating scenes; totally good with the scenes, just certain words make me cringe a little.
Overall really good book, easy read, and very engaging.

This was so different. I had no idea what to expect and better yet, I had no idea what was going to happen while I was reading it. In no way was it predictable. The world building was great. The romance was very steamy/dirty yet very sweet. The hero was certainly an alpha type but so in love I almost swooned. I’m also glad this wasn’t a trilogy. It’s a one and done HEA. I’ve been getting tired of reading ACOTAR imitations where the authors are just dragging out their story to make three books. This was a lot of fun to read.

Nope not for me. Pride and prejudice meets Cinderella.
So I have read Fae books before but I will say I'm not a big fan of them. This book is why I am not a fan. Now I am a fan of some smut, but 15% in and we were already at it. No plot, no romance, a spoiled king, and a female MC that has morals when its convenient for her. Too be honest after about 20% of the book I literally skimmed the rest of this book it was that bad for me.
