Lacks Full Translations, Otherwise Good

I have a deep interest in language learning, and Spanish is a language I would like to master. So, I've read and reviewed a fair number of Spanish short story books for native English speakers. They all seem quite similar of late, with detailed stories written in Spanish followed by a very brief summary in both English and Spanish, a short vocabulary list, and questions about the story in Spanish with their answers. Unfortunately, I find this approach sparse and not as helpful for learning for the true beginner as it could be. A couple of years ago, short-story language-learning books provided a full English translation of the story immediately after the foreign language version. I found this far more helpful. Especially in a book geared toward beginners, if a full translation of the story is not given, the learner will be left scratching their heads over huge parts of it. Even with a vocabulary list, when only one or two words per paragraph are defined, it will probably be really hard to get the gist of the story.

One thing I liked about this book is that at the beginning of each story's chapter, the publisher included a little about what language points the student should take away from the story. For instance, the second story about a family gathering on Christmas Eve has descriptions of people and family relationships.

The book includes a very short introduction where the publisher outlines a way to approach learning from the book. Having used these books on and off for years, I have a slightly different suggestion. I recommend reading the vocabulary list before you read the story so that you will have at least a little knowledge of what is coming. It increases comprehension for the first reading of the story. If you don't mind that full summaries of the stories are not included, you might enjoy adding to your Spanish learning experience with this book.

I received a free digital copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.
