RELAY follows the Appleton High School varsity track relay team as they chase the championship they’ve dreamed about since childhood. These young athletes have trained together for years, pushing their limits on and off the track — but when tragedy strikes, their bond is tested in ways they never expected.

His work explores the lived experiences, history, and imagination of South Central Los Angeles, blending community‑rooted narratives with themes of resilience, memory, and transformation. He is the author of The Voices of South Central, Storm Over South Central, RELAY, It’s All About Fate, Strange Tales of Science Fiction, and multiple poetry collections.
A longtime journalist and literary advocate, Charles serves as Director of the AC Bilbrew Writers Workshop, one of Los Angeles’ longest‑running Black literary institutions. He has also contributed to the Los Angeles Black Book Expo and has spent more than two decades documenting and uplifting independent authors, poets, and storytellers across Southern California.
Charles’ writing spans genres — from urban realism to Twilight Zone–style speculative fiction — but his work is united by a focus on community, identity, and the stories often overlooked in mainstream publishing. His essays and interviews highlight the voices of emerging and established writers, and his fiction reflects the cultural landscape of the neighborhoods that shaped him.
When he’s not writing, Charles continues to mentor new authors, host literary conversations, and chronicle the creative spirit of Los Angeles.
