국내 최고의 번역으로 만나는 프루스트, <잃어버린 시간을 찾아서> 그 여섯 번째 이야기. 지난 '게르망트 쪽'에서 “청년기에서 성년기로, 감성에서 지성으로 넘어가는 중간 단계”를 경유하여, 환상과 환멸, 환희와 죄책감으로 소용돌이치는 정념의 정중앙, 즉 '소돔과 고모라'에서 발베크의 소녀들과 운명의 여인 알베르틴을 마주하게 된 화자 마르셀은 사랑의 불씨를 감지하는 한편, 신비로운 연인이 비밀스레 품고 있는 ‘고모라적 성향’을 깨닫고 격렬한 질투에 사로잡힌다.
결국 마르셀은 '갇힌 여인'에서 알베르틴을 완전히 소유하기 위해, 도망치듯 파리에 정착한 뒤 결혼까지 결심하지만 연인을 둘러싼 온갖 의혹, 끝없는 거짓과 모호한 진실, 고모라의 여인들이 야기하는 불안 탓에 깊은 번민에 빠진다. 마르셀은 사랑할수록 커지는 불안, 관심을 거둘수록 흩어져 가는 사랑의 본질을 깨닫고 알베르틴과의 이별을 다짐하지만, 그 순간 그녀에 대한 진정한 사랑을 되찾고 새로운 앞날을 기약하려 한다.
그러나 알베르틴은 어느 날 아무런 예고도 없이 마르셀의 집을 떠나 사라지고 만다. 알베르틴이 떠난 걸 받아들이기 힘든 마르셀은 중개자로 생루를 보내지만, 전언을 통하지 말고 직접 나서라는 그녀의 편지를 받는다. 마르셀은 앙드레와의 결혼을 암시하는 편지로, 롤스로이스와 요트를 사 준다는 식으로 알베르틴의 질투와 환심을 유발하려 하지만 ‘사랑하는 알베르틴은 더 이상 이 세상에 없다’라는 봉탕 부인의 전보를 받고 상실감에 무너지는데….

2,148 books7,511 followersMarcel Proust was a French novelist, best known for his 3000 page masterpiece À la recherche du temps perdu (Remembrance of Things Past or In Search of Lost Time), a pseudo-autobiographical novel told mostly in a stream-of-consciousness style.
Born in the first year of the Third Republic, the young Marcel, like his narrator, was a delicate child from a bourgeois family. He was active in Parisian high society during the 80s and 90s, welcomed in the most fashionable and exclusive salons of his day. However, his position there was also one of an outsider, due to his Jewishness and homosexuality. Towards the end of 1890s Proust began to withdraw more and more from society, and although he was never entirely reclusive, as is sometimes made out, he lapsed more completely into his lifelong tendency to sleep during the day and work at night. He was also plagued with severe asthma, which had troubled him intermittently since childhood, and a terror of his own death, especially in case it should come before his novel had been completed. The first volume, after some difficulty finding a publisher, came out in 1913, and Proust continued to work with an almost inhuman dedication on his masterpiece right up until his death in 1922, at the age of 51.
Today he is widely recognized as one of the greatest authors of the 20th Century, and À la recherche du temps perdu as one of the most dazzling and significant works of literature to be written in modern times.
