Rate this book
Unblock your writing and recapture the playfulness of fiction.

Maybe you just can't start. Maybe you complete a first draft only to discover that it feels like a betrayal of your vision, a pale imitation of the story you had in mind. Maybe your drive toward perfection keeps you continuously editing the same scene; you just can't get it right. Maybe you don't know where your story is going anymore, or maybe you're waiting for time to get magically freed up so that you can devote long afternoons or long days to creating your story.

In this new toolkit, Stant Litore propels you through 30 exercises that will help you unblock your writing and rekindle your creativity. What we forget easily is that storytelling is play, so in this book we will recapture the excitement, play, and improvisation of fiction. Besides tackling the various causes of writer's block, discover exciting ways to find new characters, plots and subplots, and ways to reignite your love of language, your love of story, your sense of wonder, and your courage as a writer.

Reviews for the Litore Toolkits for Fiction Writers

“Not only is the advice great, but there's a warmth to the chapters that makes writing inviting rather than intimidating.” – Todd Mitchell, author of The Traitor King and The Last Panther

"Stant's masterclass take on writing fiction...makes me want to rewrite everything I've done, and push on to new works. He is clear, entertaining, and passionate. I wish these books were available when I started writing, and I'm happy they are available now." - James Van Pelt, author of Pandora's Gun

“A master Litore has created an accessible, comprehensive approach.” – S.G. Redling, author of Flowertown and Damocles

“This is a clear, comprehensive, and beautifully written guide that will not only help emerging writers to find their voices and build imaginative worlds and characters, but one that will also prove invaluable to experienced writers seeking to spark their creative impulses or deepen the worlds they create.” – Angela Mitchell, author of Falada and Dancing Days

I will be reading and trying the exercises from this book throughout the end of the year and into next year as I attempt to break my decade long creative block. So far, I like what I’m seeing. It will be a hard road to start, I think, but well worth it in the end.

I finished preparing my class for the Western Colorado Writer's Forum tonight on Overcoming Writer's Block. Like any presentation the material is drawn equally from my experience as a writer, from thoughts from other writers I've listened to, and from books and articles.

When going through my books, though, to look for what I might not have thought of immediately, I realized I could do the whole talk relying only on Stant Litore's BEAT WRITER'S BLOCK (I kind of did).

I've praised Stant's writing books before. They're great. This one is definitive, I think. It's the best description of the variety of ways writer's block arises, and it has the most helpful suggestions for overcoming it.

Stant combines Ray Bradbury's lyric advocation for the power of writing along with solid, practical advice. Every title in his writing series is wonderful, so it's hard to choose between them. Hopefully when you're looking for help for your writing you find the book you need. I can make lots of suggestions. But for help when you're stuck, this is the best. It's only been out for a couple years. Too soon to call it a classic, but if you get it now you can say, "I owned it before everyone else jumped on the bandwagon."
