In the world beyond the Spires, the Order reigns supreme. Betrayed and trapped in Erlik’s dungeon, Duchess encounters a new ally in the form of a fellow prisoner who came from the Spires long ago and who may hold the key to understanding everything. Left with no means of contact with the outside world, she grows increasingly desperate to find a way out and free the packs from the Emperor’s grasp. But freedom does not come without its cost, and if she wants to have any hope of rescuing everyone she cares about, she will need to turn to the one group who appears to act outside the Order’s control. However, these strangers have their own motives for helping and may prove just as dangerous as her enemies. As age-old rivalries are ignited anew, the fate of everyone is once more called into question.

'“I know what it’s like to be scared of yourself, but I’m not scared of you. Whatever we’ve done is done, and whatever we have yet to do, we’ll do it together. I don’t mind walking in darkness with you.”'

I never would have expected myself to cry reading any book- ESPECIALLY not a Post-Apocalyptic dog book. But I'm afraid I would be lying if I said I didn't sob as Duchess did upon reading this. The author of these books is seriously talented, as he can balance gore with beauty in a perfect way- which as an author, I personally know is extremely difficult. Speaking of which, this book is rather sentimental considering the subject matter. I never would have expected Duchess to fall for a genuine fleshstealer with a good personality, let alone say such pretty things as she did. Who knew a rebirth of Duke could be such a hopeless romantic? Love alone taught Duchess that she could believe in something even though her whole world LITERALLY burnt 'to ash.' Burn (Duchess's love interest) on the other hand is very self-conscious- and as sad as it may seem, it is almost always the most beautiful of us who are. I love Burn's character! I love her boldness, how unique she is, and her personality in general. In some way, she almost reminds me of myself- and I like the fact that I can actually relate to a character.

Also, we get to meet Step's mother in this story, and she is quite the character. I will say that she is NOT the bad dog she is portrayed to be. She speaks the truth when addressing Burn's relationship with Duchess, “I won’t tell you what you should or shouldn’t do, but I will say that not pursuing someone you might love is the worst pain a dog can feel. Even if it fizzles out or ends in fire, it won’t hurt nearly as much as the regret of a lost opportunity.” This is true, and I wish more of us would think as Lily does.
In general, I rated this book 5/5 stars because of the talent of the author. The emotion behind every word written is to be honored.

If you are fond of strange, emotional, pretty, fantasy romance and don't mind gore- then this book is for you.

Well done, Ethan Summers. I think I may just have a potential best-seller in my possession.
