Every Two Years: A Gritty Kidnapping and Survival Thriller with a Strong Female Lead

Rate this book
The first thing people think when they see Nat walking the streets of The French Quarter in New Orleans is, "so young and pretty, such a shame that she's homeless". Then they don't pay her anymore attention as she plucks their wallets right out of their pockets.
That was her life. Stealing just to survive. Unless she got a big job; setting wealthy tourist men up to get robbed and that day she had found the perfect target. It wasn't until she was stabbed and losing consciousness that she learned she was his perfect target.
Waking up in a small, grimy room with five strangers around her, she's enlightened that she's been kidnapped by none other than the Mass Grave Killer.
It was simple. He kidnapped ten people, held them for two years, and then buried their bodies in a mass grave, and he had been doing it for over six years already, but there was no way that Nat was going to lie down and let him kill her. If she could survive fighting grown men for tent space, she could fight another for her life.
Every day of those two years she fights for her life and when time is almost up she finds the strength to kill the man that tortured ten people for two years and finally escapes. She's free, but not without scars.
For the next two years, she tries to piece her life back together between the flashbacks, nightmares, and anxiety attacks, and just when she thinks things are looking good, she comes face to face with her nightmares. The man she killed has come back from the grave, and the only thing he wants is to start over with her.
Having to constantly look over her shoulder, she now has to run for her life and try to catch him before he catches her.

L. G. Smith is an African-American woman from New Orleans, though she now lives in the suburbs of Atlanta with her husband and beautiful daughters. She writes (mainly) fantasy fiction, but also dabbles in thriller and melodramas, and loves to write fan fiction. All of her stories feature POC characters set in New Orleans, referred to as the NOLAverse, and though not all the books are in the same genre, there are little Easter eggs connecting each series inside each other.

When she's not writing, or with her family, she's reading, watching K Dramas, obsessing over K Pop, or watching anime (sometimes more than one at a time).

I loved everything about this book.
The characters were real. They were instantly likeable, especially Nat.
It was great to see a woman in the role of 'hero'. She took on every role within the group from mother to killer!

It wasn't until after I had read the book that I realised it was a Young Adult read. Really good.

I enjoyed this one. From beginning to end it was non stop. A real page turner. It follows a girl named Nat as she becomes a kidnap victim not once but twice and how she escaped.

L.G. Smith’s “Every Two Years” is a thriller that reveals the regrettable consequences of infringing the laws of nature, and the reality that ensues.

A young man, Mikey, stands perplexed by the mountain of pick-pocketed items that Nat has embezzled from unsuspecting people since sunrise. The latter has perfected her mastery of tricking rich men with fallacies only to later swindle them out of their valuables on the streets of The French Quarter. Jerome, her handler, stops by to point out a wealthy-looking tourist whom he has been stalking, and as usual, implores her to carefully set her bait that would foster a quick plunder by him and his gang. Little do they know that their prey has formulated a sticky web that would capture Nat for a sinister project.

Nat wakes up in a dark chamber where several other teenagers have been kept for a study by their ruthless kidnapper, who aspires to establish whether a group of people will act in a particular manner when placed in dire conditions. A rig is placed on her head as a string of queries follows regarding her name and genealogy. Any slight hesitation to respond truthfully acquires her an electric shock and a harsh reaction that is followed by a quick reminder regarding her narrow chances of survival. She is soon to learn that her tormentor aims to hold her captive for two years and then kill her with the others, as he has habitually done for the last six years.

This is a thriller that elicits suspense, excitement, wonder, tension, and apprehension from its commencement to the end. The plot builds towards a culmination that takes the reader by surprise, through literary devices such as cliffhangers and twists, as well as dramatic psychological elements and mind games. While protagonists of thrillers have traditionally been well-mannered characters, the author’s choice of a protagonist who is a crook is unusual but invigorating in the eyes of an adept thriller fan.

L.G. Smith’s “Every Two Years” offers an atmosphere of menace and impulsive brutality from which escaping seems impossible. Its stakes are high, and readers will remain spellbound by its clever plot that is dark, action-packed, and filled with ultra-heightened expectations. For anyone who wishes to escape to a world that fuels their adrenaline rush, L.G. Smith’s “Every Two Years” is your perfect getaway!

This book gripped me from the start, the main character is a tough female and very likeable. She goes to hell and back twice but always seems concerned with others over herself. I would definitely recommend giving it a go.

Please note that I received a complimentary copy of the book from the author via Voracious Readers Only.
