The Book With No Answers: Unlocking the Power of Questions for a Better Life

Rate this book
It's not a self-help book. It's a self-coaching book!

Robert Maiolo was tired of "do this, do that" self-help books. He knew there had to be a better way to find meaning, direction and answers in life.

Rather than a book full of answers, Maiolo wrote "The Book With No Answers" - a book packed with thought-provoking questions that will enable readers to find their own answers in life. This book not only presents some of life's most important question's, but looks at them in a new light, and helps the reader begin the journey of finding their own answers.

Tackling everything from "Who am I?" to "Who do I want to be in 30 years?" - The Book With No Answers will help readers understand that some of life's most meaningful questions can be answered by looking inward. This will be the last self-help book you will ever need.

"A thoughtful motivational book that tackles common tropes in new ways." - Kirkus Reviews

Great inspirational read!

A great, self help book if you looking for answers but are prepared to put in the work and be honest with yourself. After you seem to be just plodding along and accepting things for what they are this book gives you a glimpse into how things can be different just looking at them from a different angle. The questions you can ask yourself to get the real answers you are searching for and improve your life. Start a new day, draw the line under the past as that cannot be changed but the here and now and the future can and this is your chance to make your life what you really want it to be. You are in control and by answering questions posed in this book you can start on that new path one that you want to be on not the one you've been carried along on.
The author uses great analogies, making it easy to make sense of and understand. I thought the idea of breaking down each point into 4 easy steps is genious. It gives you things to think about but in small chunks, focusing on specifics so you can progress easier and you are less likely to give up and just follow the crowd. With this guidence you can easily be the shepherd and not the sheep! Great advise, giving plenty of inspiration!

The Book With No Answers is a handy little book that serves well as a companion piece for those on a journey of self reflection and discovery. Although technically a self help book, I would describe it more as a self coaching book as it is about scouting horizons for the long term, rather than just trying to get you though a crisis. It is different in that sense to many in an oversaturated market, and having read my fair share of them I more than welcomed this fresh and interesting approach.

The author frames the book around questions you can ask yourself to be better in your journey, rather than giving answers which is where other books fall down : everything is subjective and the self help books that are supposedly a cute for all are nothing but false promises. This book puts the onus on the reader to set themselves on the right path and gives them a clear roadmap while expecting them to fill in the details. It has all the motivation of these books and accompanying workshops but does not come with the cringe that many fear.

There are some wonderful quotes in this book, in particular one around heroism and villainy, and a couple of one liners about The Rock that made my laugh as well as Mr Brightside. This kept the book down to earth and human and made it an enjoyable and enlightening read.

The Book With No Answers doesn't rely on false promises to sell itself, but the quality of what is inside truly does. This should be mandatory reading for anyone trying to better themselves.

I don't do self-help books as a rule. They always sound a bit of a fraud to me. I mean, when we read a book that somebody else has written, aren't we getting their help rather than our own? 'Practise these five exercises every day and I guarantee you'll feel one hundred percent more fulfilled.' We've all seen statements like that, from a third party claiming to have all the answers.

That's why The Book With No Answers caught my attention, and I had to give it a go. Author R J Maiolo got my approval from the get-go, by turning the whole thing around. We're all looking for answers, but to get the correct answers for our own personal circumstances we need to ask the correct personal questions. We're all different, and there are no generic, catch-all answers to ensure a happy and fulfilling life for each and every one of us. If we've ever seen a therapist, as the author observes, they don't proceed by suggesting answers to the problems we bring them, but by asking us why we think the situation might have come about.

I personally have seen a therapist, and can attest to the feeling of freedom that resulted from just one visit, which is why I approve of Maiolo's book. It's the therapist on our bookshelves, encouraging us to self-reflect, ask ourselves the questions that help us find the right answers to our own unique circumstances. Maiolo suggests what these questions could be, beginning with 'Who am I?'

It sounds simple, but in fact it's not, and the author breaks it down into sections to help, using a good deal of humour to assist us chart our ‘Road Map for Life’, getting from A to B carrying a ‘backpack’ filled with supplies in the form of questions to help us on the way. He uses a fictional character named James too, and his fictional life, to illustrate how to go about the process. It's not all humour though, and the author uses some of the worst moments of his own life—bereavement, redundancy—to illustrate good attitudes to help cope with and find a way past such occurrences.

There are no easy answers in life, and if you're looking for a quick fix then this may not be the book for you, as the author points out. He's encouraging us all to be self-reflective, or even more so, for those of us who are already. I am, yet as somebody who also tries to be logical and rational I was impressed with how this book suggests a very ordered approach to self-knowledge and thence self-improvement. I've often been troubled by how lacking in self-awareness so many people I've met have been, and thought that the world would be a better place if only people would bother to get to know themselves before trying to know others. Using RJ Maiolo's book will be a great help in doing so, I'm convinced, and I can't recommend it highly enough.

This might be called The Book of Questions. Either way, it is a nice, basic, simple approach to finding your way. This will resonate with lots of people, and might be deceptively simple. It doesn't have the flash of "big" self-help titles, but still effective. I like the encouragement offered along the way. Nicely done. Sometimes it's very powerful to go back to basics.

Thanks very much for the free review copy for review!!

Satisfying, mind-blowing, and a must-read, this book encourages you to look for your own answers. According to the experience of the author, “ Asking ourselves questions can expand our consciousness. It allows us to understand more about ourselves and the world around us”. In addition, when you ask the right questions, you gain a better understanding of yourself and your life in general. He gives a lot of suggestions like getting a journal to write down your thoughts. Among other topics, he discusses how to create a roadmap, a guide to help you walk your own path, and strategies to help you find answers. The first chapter asks us the philosophical question, "Who am I?", which in turn prompts us to think deeply about ourselves. A special mention of "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" by Douglas Adams was a pleasant touch. It was a kind of preparation for all the cognitive adventures hidden on each page. It was fascinating reading for me. It is highly recommended.

A balance of practical self-help and autobiography—what I enjoyed most about the journey the author takes us on is learning about myself and the author along the way. The book packs a punch and gets in a good deal of insight in a short read. I also enjoyed the cheeky humour and have bought copies for my whole family. Highly recommend to anyone at a crossroads in their life. 10/10!

This book sets itself a part from others in its genre from the first page - it is not a perfect formula of actions promising to change everyone’s life. It is not attempting to tell you to live your life a specific way in order to change everything you don’t like about it. It’s asking you to be more thoughtful and curious about yourself, the things which make you unique and things that you wish to do. I think most people would say they know themselves but most likely haven’t asked themselves the question laid out in this book. With the noise of the outside world - expectations, pressures, desires - it’s easy to lose sight of who we are and what we truly want in life. This is a great book for anyone wanting to get a better sense of who they are and what they want. It is easy to read and simple, thoughtful exercises which will change how you create and view your goals in life and how to stay true to who you are.

(I received a complimentary review copy of this book from the author via Voracious Readers Only)

I know that everyone's journeys are different, but for me this book was the perfect self-help book for where I'm at right now. I really enjoyed the light and chatty tone, which ensured that the author never came across as preachy or pretentious. As mentioned in the title, this book is not here to give you answers or tell you how to live your life, but the questions it encourages you to ask yourself are wide-reaching and comprehensive, and I can see myself coming back to them as I try to make progress in various aspects of my life over the next few years.
