For Fans of J.N. Chaney, space operas and found family comes a thrilling Science Fiction Adventure
When a terror attack on the desert planet Enoch endangers their entire colony, Neron and his friends find an old abandoned starship in a cave. Soon they are hunted by the merciless soldiers of the Authority and embark on the adventure of a lifetime!
A coming-of-age story about a found starship and the most unlikely crew.
The plot was semi-engaging - I wanted to know what would happen next, even if some of it felt a bit ordinary and cliche. The characters were semi-formed but in some ways hard to envision, hard to relate to. For example, we don't really know anyone's ages, what they look like, or even really their place in the bigger picture of the world and governance the author alludes to. The governance- the Authority and the Hegemony - seemed stereotypical bad-guy dystopia type stuff, like the Empire from Star Wars, but was also vaguely described and hinted at. The author has characters handle death quite cavalierly, even when the characters' own parents are killed, which was unsettling. The story overall really needed a good edit. There typos and grammatical errors which are a little distracting. More distracting were some odd phrases used throughout, such as saying a sound "appeared." How does a sound appear? Or saying the black market was vivid when what was actually being said was that the black market was thriving. Things like that. The book ends a bit abruptly with a semi-cliffhanger and to be expected. I confess I am partially thinking of trying to read the other in the series just to find out what happens next and to learn what the rest of the universe the author hints at is like. But let's see!
If you like pure sci-fi this one is for you, well written with lots of action from page one and it pulls you in after the first couple of chapters it becomes increasingly difficult to put down. Set on a world where the colonists struggle to make a living by mining a small group finally rebel against the autonomy by killing two of their soldiers big mistake they are coming to exact revenge and they don't care who or how many have to die. Great read highly recommended, Baz.
This ended up being a very entertaining book. At first I thought it was a little dark and bleak for me, but once they found the ship (as in the description) things really got moving (quite literally) and I liked it enough that I'd read a second book if there was one. Likable characters who really care about each other is a big plus for me.
Big thumbs up for no swearing. There is violence and death--a little much for me, but it's part of the story and what makes the bad guys bad I suppose. Just a tad slow, or maybe just less action near the beginning, but it would be more than worth it if it was to set up a sequel. 4.5 stars.
BTW, someone gave it one star for an ad in the middle of the book. It's only one page! It did startle me, but it's no big deal.
An interesting storyline, poorly constructed but with a chance to redeem itself. Character development is minimal so far, and the plot allows far too much collateral losses. This first book ends on a promise for the future.
The author followed the latest money grabbing trend....ending the book right as the real story began. I found the story interesting, but not enough to buy the second book. It's really annoying when authors disrespect their readers like this.
Pretty much YA sci-fi that encourages you to suspend disbelief. The editing needs work. But It did tend to engage me enough to read the entire story. know if this is his first book, but I'd be willing to try another one just to see if the author grows as a writer.
The writing, character development, storytelling are all superbly done. It's so well written and coherent, sometimes it feels like a retelling of historical facts rather than fiction. Totally immersive experience.
