As snow falls around Ahrensbach’s castle, Ferdinand, soon to be married to the duchy’s next archduchess, receives a concerning letter. Not only has Rozemyne been summoned by the royal family once again, but she is also being taken to the underground archive hidden beneath the Royal Academy’s library. Even as a third-year, she proves to be a source of constant headaches—and the chaos only continues when she manages to pull an unexpected figure into her joint research! The stakes are raised higher still when Lestilaut makes an astonishing suggestion, forcing her to participate in a game of bride-taking ditter with Leidenschaft’s spear in hand. Rozemyne’s hand in marriage hangs in the balance in the newest volume of this biblio-fantasy. Includes two short stories and four-panel manga by You Shiina.
Kazuki started writing novels when she was in her second year of junior high school. After taking an entrance exam, she entered into a national university before graduating and becoming busy with work, stopping her from writing. Once she was married and her child entered kindergarten, Kazuki had more free time, which she used to start writing again. From 2013 onwards, she started publishing her novel Ascendance of a Bookworm on the user-generated novel publishing website Shōsetsuka ni Narō which saw success. In 2015, she officially debuted with said series under the T.O. Books imprint.
With Part 5 being the big finale (I think) it’s no wonder each volume is gonna go balls to the wall out.
Several volumes back Sylvester announced Wilfried and Rozemyne’s engagement. Never had I thought it would actually go through. I always assumed Rozemyne would end up in the sovereign somehow, and I think last volume showed us how. The only thing left in the way was to separate Wilfried and I do believe that’s what this volume sets up.
Now that everyone realizes how important Rozemyne is other duchies are vying for her hand in marriage. We also get some more world building with the archive room and we get to witness many stunning rituals.
This volume was action packed and I cannot wait for the next (3 months away!!).
Another excellent addition to the series. I was not expecting things to get so tense so quickly, this only being the second volume of this arc.
The Prologue is told from Ferdinand's POV, and it was great actually being able to see him. Life doesn't seem quite as bad as I feared for him, but there's little doubt things will get worse once Detlinde graduates from the Royal Academy (unless something drastic happens). Not that his life still doesn't suck, as he has to constantly put on an act and keep his guard up, but it's also interesting to see him learning more about his new home and how things are progressing there.
Then there's the main story. I loved getting to learn what's in the archive. It seems like quite an important place, and I'm eager to see what more knowledge is learned from it come future volumes.
The various research projects continue, with the focus being on the project with Dunkelfelger. This project quickly balloons in size/scope, which is hard to talk about without spoilers, but... Rozemyne is terrible at doing what she's told through no real fault of her own. XD
This is a natural continuation of expanding the magic system from the prior book, and I love how much Rozemyne is focused on helping others realize the importance of religion/rituals simply because she knows it will help the country in the long run. While it is still largely personal to her, it is a sign of how much she's grown in that it really doesn't have much to do with books.
I don't know how to talk about this next part without spoilers, so I'll keep it brief, but Rozemyne just gets herself more and more involved with the Royal Family, and I love it. I wasn't expecting things to get to this level in this volume, but I'm excited to see where it goes form here.
As for Rozemyne actually socializing this year, ...oof. She tries so hard to fix the misconceptions and rumors surrounding her, Ferdinand, and Ehrenfest, but to no avail. It just continues to make the whole situation heartbreaking.
Quick side note, while I understand why the project with Raimund doesn't get much time, the project with Drewanchel is just odd to me. I didn't bring it up with my review of the previous volume because of spoilers, but it's no longer a spoiler here. Honestly, the project is a bit unclear to me because of how little focus it gets, but the research seems to be on things that are trade secrets in Ehrenfest. It was made clear Drewanchel isn't likely to learn much about the process of paper, but it still seems a super risky project. Yet, it's hardly brought up at all since Rozemyne isn't directly involved.
Which is another odd thing to me. This project has to do with paper, which is related to books, yet Rozemyne doesn't seem to care at all. She doesn't even seem curious as to how the project is going or anything. I get she is SUPER busy and has too much on her plate, plus she has gotten super focused/motivated on how important religion is to the magic, but it's still just odd to me. Maybe that's just me, though.
This issue doesn't take away from my enjoyment at all, though. I mean, focusing more on that wouldn't have really added to much at this point, the plot so far past paper, but I just wish Rozemyne showed a bit more interest into how that project was going or whatnot.
As for the big climax of this book... The plot blurb gives it away, so it's not a spoiler in my eyes, but Lestilaut from Dunkelfelger is after Rozemyne for a bride. It all comes down to a game of ditter, and it's very obvious Ehrenfest is at a severe disadvantage. I had not expected such a sequence of events to occur, and I was on the edge of my seat with no clue how Ehrenfest was going to win or even if they would. I had not been prepared for so much stress in this volume.
The Epilogue is from Hannelore's POV, detailing her side of the climax as well as showing the aftermath of events that Rozemyne was not privy to. It's rather sweet.
Bonus story time. The first is from Lueuradi's POV, she from Jossbrenner. I enjoyed seeing her viewpoint of one of Rozemyne's ceremonies, and it's a nice reminder that while Rozemyne might be panicking during certain events, to most others she really does appear to be a saint.
The second story is from Sigiswald's POV. It might be a spoiler just stating that, but I'm so happy to get his perspective on everything, as he has been an important off-screen character for so long. His dynamic with his family is different than I was expecting, but I enjoyed it. I love seeing his resolve as well.
The third story is from Sylvestor's POV, and it's another fun addition of him reading the reports from the Royal Academy and freaking out with each report. XD There's not much more to say about that other than it's always fun to get an adult noble's perspective on what Rozemyne has been up to. It is also nice the third research project I was complaining about earlier gets a moment of focus here, even if it is fairly brief.
Then there are the bonus comics. None of them stand out to me this round, but they're all still good.
As for the art, it's great as always. I love the inner color illustration. The color scheme is a bit different from normal, I love Rozemyne's expression, and the detail is so intricate and intimidating. The cover illustration is great, too. It really took me by surprise to see Rozemyne ready for battle, but it fits perfectly for the climax of this volume.
Overall, another great addition to the series. Rozemyne is continuing to deepen her understanding of religion and magic, and she is also trying to help others understand these same connections. She gets involved all the more with the Royal Family, plus there is plenty of tension when a higher-ranking duchy finds a way to put her engagement on the line.
As Lady Rozemyne goes about her business conducting cross-duchy research, negotiating new conditions for book and knowledge exchanges, and prodding her friends and family for their promised support . . . as Rozemyne does what Rozemyne does, everyone is sucked into the vicious currents that follow. ASCENDANCE OF A BOOKWORM v23 is a good example of a story in which everything goes according to plan, while simultaneously, everyone is burdened with horrendous anxiety.
After all, Rozemyne can't conduct cross-duchy research without stepping on toes, irking a few nobles, and raising her own duchy's expectations; Rozemyne can't talk-up her love of books without realizing that making someone like Professor Rauffen addicted to reading (about ditter, of course) will have its own side effects; and Rozemyne can't blithely send a report back home saying she accidentally scheduled a Dedication Ritual at the Royal Academy (for research into prayer ceremonies), for which Crown Prince Sigiswald has invited himself . . .
Or, she can, actually, but that's all part of the fun, isn't it? ("According to the letter, our situation here in the Royal Academy had blown so far out of proportion that Florencia had fainted upon reading my report," page 148).
ASCENDANCE OF A BOOKWORM v23 is an interesting volume, because the first half of the book covers genial fare: the characters chat, go to class, detail a bit more of their interduchy research, and so forth. Notably, Lady Hannelore of Dunkelfelger earns a sizeable role in this volume's events. The humble archduke candidate with pink twintails holds more power and skill than she's aware of, and her relationship with Ehrenfest becomes a sticking point going forward. And that's when the drama begins. And, unsurprisingly, it's all Lestilaut's fault.
Elsewhere, the current volume pokes its nose a little deeper into Yurgenschmidt's history. Within the novel's first 50 pages, Rozemyne engages a curious, if sometimes fraught discussion with all three royal princes on the nature and function of the Royal Academy's library, as well as the contents of a mysterious underground archive few rarely enter. Who can enter the underground archive? What knowledge does this archive house? And why is the archive's existence being hidden from current royalty?
Answering these questions requires more than a few pithy observations from a royal summons; one must investigate first-hand, if one is to discern the truth. (And while Anastasius' hilarious "big brother" energy scolds Rozemyne for back-talking Sigiswald, it turns out the Crown Prince is fairly a nice and reasonable fellow.)
The mix of passive and active worldbuilding hasn't always been this novel series' strong suit, but readers should enjoy this library expedition as a proxy for questioning the nation's history (e.g., What is the nation's history, who authored it, and who has access to it?).
To this end, Rozemyne is getting better at maneuvering around and manipulating the nobility. Detlinde is getting cocky, but nobody cares because the girl's ignorance will surely see her crashing and burning before long. Archnobles from Jossbrenner and Immerdink try to sneak into Rozemyne's good graces, but the bookworm pulls a fast one and offers "a refined cackle" in rebuke. Dunkelfelger is the only outlier.
A confrontation between Wilfried and Lestilaut focuses on whether Ehrenfest is making the most of Rozemyne's unique mind and abilities: taunts turn into insults, and insults turn into challenges that cannot be rescinded. Ditter, of course, is the proposed solution. But what's the prize? And at what cost? The whole, extended Third Act of ASCENDANCE OF A BOOKWORM v23 is pure suspense. How these two duchies get into this scrum; how these two duchies abuse their resources to gain an advantage; how these two duchies' most powerful fighters step up their game; and how these two duchies underestimate the very people they tend to sacrifice when barricaded by vituperative egos will keep readers on edge for the book's final 95 pages.
For the drama alone, ASCENDANCE OF A BOOKWORM v23 is a memorable volume. One enjoys reading books for which the author's affection for her characters never bends or breaks; this author won't betray their readers.
Professor Fraularm is insecure and pompous, sure; Lestilaut is an unforgivable jackass, obviously; and Rablut, the Sovereign Knight Commander, has a habit of changing his allegiances, true . . . but nobody gets away with everything, nobody succeeds 100% of the time, and nobody's ambition is without consequence.
Similarly, Wilfried's kindness is often shortsighted, sure; Prince Hildebrand's affections are incomplete and unrequited, obviously; and Lady Hannelore just wants a friend, true . . . but nobody who deserves agency is left without recourse, nobody fails 100% of the time, and nobody is without the support they need to make a difference, no matter how late in the game they need it ("As an archduke candidate raised in the duchy of warfare, Hannelore seldom had people offer to protect her," page 299).
This was packed with one big thing after another. The latter part even had me at the edge of my seat. That was action-filled! The desperation of Ehrenfest versus the pride of Dunkelfelger. I just couldn't stop reading!
In this book, we can clearly see how unrestrained Rozemyne is (and how much rampaging Rozemyne can do) without Ferdinand there to restrain her. She's simply unstoppable now. The only person who can keep her in check is Ferdinand and now everyone is there to witness just how good Ferdinand is in reining Rozemyne is. Rozemyne is blazing through everything!
This book in the series is exciting with a promise of upcoming unrest. The side stories also give more context to the main plot as Rozemyne can have quite the tunnel-vison. Still, I'd say I don't like Sigiswald's short story. Nothing about how it's written, more about him as a character. He gets on my nerves, is all :)
The last ditter game has me blazing through the words! I couldn't stop reading at that part. Lestilaut fought with everything he had, but alas, there were intruders. I couldn't stop smiling whenever he addresses Rozemyne. I just know this man is nurturing a huge, fat crush for our little MC. I'm all here for it.
This one got my hyped! I can't wait to read the next!
Unlike a lot of light novel series I read, Ascendance of a Bookworm manages to still be good and creative even on the 23rd Volume of the series. It usually does that by changing the setting and the focus of the story for each part, which prevents it from becoming repetitive. In the case of Part 5, it is now obvious that the story is changing its focus from the mix of Magic School shenanigans and Ehrenfest internal politics that was Part 4, towards a focus on national (or inter-duchy) politics and the fate of the Kingdom.
It is a bit odd, because in Part 4, Myne's mentors (Ferdinand and Sylvester) repeatedly advised her to avoid meddling with Royalty and higher ranked duchies, only for Myne to disobey, causing random trouble for everyone. But here it switches perspectives and starts showing that Ferdinand and Sylvester were wrong to do so and that Myne's instincts to weave links to Royalty and Great Duchies are the right ones.
First, because Ehrenfest is now a high-ranking duchy thanks to Myne's efforts, and so it is expected to do meddle in national politics and makes allies of other high-ranking duchies and royals. Otherwise, the rest of the country will view Ehrenfest with suspicion and unite against them.
Second, because the Kingdom's situation is really bad and it may collapse if no one is doing anything : the King is well-meaning but incompetent and is driving himself to an early grave trying to recharge the Magic Kingdom batteries. He also lacks legitimacy because he no longer has the Magic Kingdom user instruction manual, and no one else knows where it is. The Crown Prince is an entitled idiot, the Greater Duchies do whatever they want, and the Commander of the Sovereignty Knight Order is planning betrayal. A storm is coming, and if the Kingdom falls, so will Ehrenfest.
In that light, all of Myne's actions actually have a positive effect : she starts by helping the Royal Family open and consult the hidden archives to look for the Kingdom's user instruction manual (no, I am not going to try typing its name, since I doubt I could ever spell it correctly). Then she uses her research into religious rituals to collect mana to help the Royal Family recharge the Magic Kingdom batteries. She also tries to weave strong links with the Greater Duchy of Dunkelfelger through her books and her friendship with Hannelore.
This last part backfires (because of an entitled idiot called Lestilaut), but the resulting bride-stealing ditter match could have been avoided if she for once had disobey Sylvester and Ferdinand and turned to the Royal Family for help. While she won, she had to push herself beyond her limits to do so and that showed that Ehrenfest alone was no longer enough to protect her. She actually seems to have a better handle on the situation than Sylvester and Ferdinand, whose knowledge of national politics and the Kingdom's situation seems to be very outdated as a result of Ehrenfest previous isolation. As smart as those two are, they obviously can no longer keep up with the gremlin.
Right off the bat, I was terrified I wouldn’t enjoy this book 😱. Why? Because I had stopped reading the series over a year ago while waiting for it to be completed, and honestly, I don’t remember a lot of details. Still, I stubbornly refused to look anything up for clarification—no way was I risking spoilers!
As with the previous volumes, the early books in each part seem to focus on setting the stage for the story. So, I went in expecting this one to be just okay. And guess what? It was… just okay—at least at first. Nothing major happened, but oh boy, the second part of this book was so much fun! 🎉 It’s made me extra excited knowing I still have 10 more books to go before the series wraps up.
Compared to other volumes, I usually need to read at least half the parts and get all the information before I feel truly invested. But this time? Lestilaut stole the show and kept me hooked from the get-go.
I have to give a huge shoutout to him! 🙌 His choice of words, his teasing, and the way he delivered every single blow—chef’s kiss! 👏👏 I know his pursuit will likely come to an end after this volume, but oh man, what a ride it was.
For me, there’s no question: Lestilaut was the star of this book. So yeah, this second one? It’s his.
9/10. I don't actually remember what happened exactly. I've been reading week by week the parts of the volumes at J-Novel Club's site and the events kind of overlap. Also, I read a super long novel and it made it hard for me to remember detail of Ascendance. What I do remember about reading the synopsis is that Hannelore becoming enamoured of Wilfried was weird. The only thing he did was give her his help. Also, I remember that Myne talked without any care to the royals which was nice seeing. Some notes I have mention my displeasure of how common it is mentioned of women as practically livestock or breathing wombs. I certainly dislike how Myne has no serious emotions of herself being viewed that way. It sometimes seems to be fully acceptant of this as nothing even think about. This is something that I'll never comprehend about the story. How is there no nobles questioning about their treatment. Obviously there would be backlash, but even a small secret conversation of a side story would be great. The most that's been mentioned is of Drewanchel's archuke candidate and how she lost the position by mere political gains.
Myne cannot help but draw the attention of those around her, whether through her obsession with books, her willingness to help those around her or her large amount of mana and knowledge on forgotten spells found in ancient books. But drawing the attention from others is not always a good thing, because some will try to get what they want in ways that Myne might have trouble dealing with even when it comes from a supposed allied group.
Part 5, volume 2 is a solid and entertaining addition to the series, a nice slice-of-life isekai where cultures clash, and Myne's knowledge of her previous life inadvertently lead to both trouble and unexpected rewards. It was an entertaining read, although I do feel Myne is being blamed a bit too quickly and I do think the kids have a bit too much power at the Academy to impact not just their own lives but that of the whole kingdom. Minor things, but still a bit jarring at times.
Still, a solid read and really curious what comes next.
Jeerum!
As always, despite her best efforts, Rozemyne does the thing that her parents, guardian, and friends tell her not to do. She gets involved with the royal family. To be fair, it's more of the royal family becoming involved with her, but either way ends up with frustrations and problems for Ehrenfest.
Wilfried is drawn into a game of Bride Stealing Ditter with Hannalore and Rozemyne as the treasures to be stolen. It's interesting to see the male reactions when the women don't fall all over themselves in excitement.
Ditter is the Royal Academy equivalent of Quidditch (in my opinion) and people are as crazy about it, especially Dunkelfelger's students.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Anything that involved Rozemyne would spin out of control, that was something that everyone should knowby now. And so . One can imagine Sylvester's headaches upon receiving the reports.
Next Wilfried continued making problems, . There won't be any easy victory for Ehrenfest this time as as usual things spiraled out of control once again. Well, shouldn't be surprised by that LOL.
Ferdinand cool but Lestilaut BIKIN AKU DEG2AN, Keren bgt passion, semangat, keras kepalanya 😭. Tpi ya mengikuti streorotip Dunkfelnger apapun masalahmu Ditter jalan keluarnya 🤣. Disini keliatan banget perbedaan antara retrainer Rozemyne sama Arcduke candidates yg lain meski sama-sama Archnoble. Epilognya seruu banget, cuman baca Pov Sigiswald's lelah banget astaga, berasa baca Pov nya Detlinde😭😭🤌. Sukses dah lu dengan ke narsisan lu, baek2 lu Sigiswald jangan sampe nyenggol gremlin kita.
Sesi baca laporan dari royal academy gamungkin berlalu tanpa pusing ingin menjedotkan kepala ke meja 🤣🤣
Rozemyne is now allowed to enter the closed stack archive with the royal family, she did try her best to resist but ultimately couldn't refuse a royal order, inside they found ancient documents about religious rituals.
It's time for Ehrenfest to demonstrate a religious ritual, where Rozemyne once again demonstrates her aptitude for blessings shocking everyone.
Subsequently Lestilaut decides that suck a special woman should belong to Dunkelfelger and propose to her, while trying to refuse Ehrenfest ends up agreeing to settle the dispute with a game of ditter.
A struggle to read after taking a break of a few years. There are so many characters and retainers and duchies and threads that it's hard to keep track.
The gist of the story was understandable though, some bits just flew by me.
I did however remember my age old complaint about the series: there's not that much about books or bookworm like behaviour. However, the story is in its final (very long) arc so the series might get interesting.
This one has so much interesting stuff going on and lots of action too. I really love the tension of Rozemyne dealing with the royal family. The Erhenfest ritual was probably my fav scene.
Hannelore is so adorable. I love that she got to be a big focus this book too. As usual, filled with anticipation for the next installment.
This continues to be a complete delight and a reason to get up in the morning. Myne continues to get more sophisticated and her physical age is catching up to her mental age (slowly), but as her obsession with books was part of her entire existence that's not going to get more subtle.
I'm glad that her family, especially Wilfred, as starting to realize that she is something extraordinary.
The opening of this volume was so intriguing with the secret archive! And I loved how Rozemyne tricks the other duchies in connection with the Dedication Ritual! I would have wished the royals wouldn’t distrust her and Ferdinand so much, but I have a feeling they’ll make trouble for them later. The bonus 4-komi manga at the end were super funny!
This directly follows from Part 5 Volume 1. We are still at the Academy and there is a lot of plot. And big events. But super fast readable, this felt a lot shorter than the previous volume. I do wish we got to see more of Ferdinand. And I miss being in the town and the shopkeepers. More and more it seems obvious where this series is going - but I expect a left turn at some point.
Vast majority of this volume takes place at the Royal Academy as Myne and the rest of Ehrenfest prep for their joint duchy research projects and also play some Ditter. This is another great addition to in my opinion the best available light novel series. Can't wait for the next volume.
The story is progressing throughout the year. Just how many headaches will she give her guardians. Just how many times can she be involved with royalty! Can't wait for the next volume.
I really liked how everyone thinks bad about Rozemyne background because of the story. I can't not believe she is performing rituals to help out the country and the temple. What surprised me the most was the ditter for her hand of marriage.
Honestly, the intensity of the bride ditter game was taled splendidly. The proposal of Lestilaut to Rozemyne was breathtaking. The flow of events was a surprise. It excites me much that leads me to binge this volume. I know that people will like this progress. Amazing
