Malayali Memorial & other stories, originally written
by Unni R & translated by J Devika is a collection of
short stories.


The stories end abruptly. As a reader you'll keep on
guessing what's the author wanted to say. What's the
character wanted to do? Why they even did this?


But like Murakami's writing ( you're waiting for it!) this
is often liberating. The readers can take the lead. And
build the stories the way they want.

The premises and characters in Unni R's stories are intriguing, but I didn't love the collection because most of the stories ended obscurely. I failed to understand the underlying meaning the author wanted to convey and was annoyed at my inability.

വാത്സ്യായനൻ,അളകാപുരി, മാവ് വെട്ടുന്നില്ല, ഒരു നാടൻ സംഭവം (1957-1959), മലയാളി മെമ്മോറിയൽ, ഒരു പകൽ ഒരു രാത്രി എന്നീ ആറ് കഥകളാണ് സമാഹാരത്തിൽ ഉൾപ്പെടുത്തിയിട്ടുള്ളത്. ഈ 6 കഥകളിലും കൗതുകമുയർത്തുന്ന കഥാപാത്രങ്ങളാണ് കഥ മുന്നോട്ടു കൊണ്ടുപോകുന്നത്. മതം, ജാതി, പരദൂഷണം, മോഹം, എന്നിങ്ങനെയുള്ള മനുഷ്യന്റെ രഹസ്യ ജീവിതത്തിൽ നിന്നും രൂപപ്പെടുന്ന ചില സ്വഭാവങ്ങൾ എങ്ങിനെ അയാളുടെ തന്നെ ജീവിതത്തെ ബാധിക്കുന്നു എന്ന് കഥാരൂപത്തിൽ വിവരിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു.
