3.5 thrilling stars. Oh, what a tangled web we weave...! The beautiful Caroline is successful in her job at a small local paper, and despite opportunities, she didn't reach for the staery heights of success that were open to her, but opted instead for small town safety. It soon becomes apparent that she is hiding from a threatening past. Caroline thinks she spots a familiar face in a crowded shopping mall and is overcome with fear. The past she has tried so hard to run away from is encroaching on the present and is about to upset all areas of her life. She is in danger, and so are those she cares about. This is a pacy read that keeps you guessing. I certainly did not predict the outcome! I enjoyed the nods to inclusivity with nods to diabetes, autism and LGBTQ.
A snall aside: The brief autism reference sat a little uneasy with me when Caroline apologised to her old fling when he revealed his grandchild was autistic. I felt unhappy with Caroline's reaction, for personal reasons, as I have autistic children and work with an autism charity. I want acceptance, not sympathy. I wouldn't change my children and would be offended if someone apologised to me. Unfortunately, some people do react this way out of ignorance, so while I may be uneasy with Caroline's reaction, it can be true reflection.
Overall, this was a chilling and unsettled read that has you racing to the end to uncover the threat and the backstory. Ominous and dark without any gore. #ClosingIn #EDThompson
