"Everyone knows what happens to Crows; they go mad and they go bad."
In the post-Break world of superpowers, necromancy is the one gift nobody wants. But an invitation to the Free States' Academy of Superheroes means that same gift might be Damian Banach's ticket to a brighter future... if only he can avoid the madness ingrained in his powers.
There has never been a Crow Cape, but Damian isn't the sort to give up. He'll take control of his destiny or die trying... and he just might bring the post-Break world to its knees along the way.
The Murder of Crows is a post-apocalyptic superhero tale, set in a broken world and starring a deeply flawed teenage antihero. It contains violence, gore, angst, found family, young love, failed dreams, and a whole lot of expletives.

Chris began as a gleam in someone’s eye, but birth and childhood were quick to follow. He’s been fortunate enough to live in Spain, Germany, and all over the United States of America, and is busy planning a tour of the distilleries of Scotland.
He currently lives in Nevada with his angelic wife and ever-expanding whisky collection and occasionally ventures outside to peer upwards, mutter to himself about ‘day stars’, and then scurry back into the house.
Chris is the author of multiple series; The Murder of Crows, The Storm Who Rides, The (Second) Life of Brian, and The Many Travails of John Smith. He frequently shares updates on his author website at https://christullbane.com.
One of my absolute favorite series. This is a completed work within a world built by an amazing author. The bundled set lets you read this saga from start to finish without interruption. Tullbane weaves an amazing story of a unique world with fresh characters. He makes promises in his story telling from page one and delivers the promise through to the end.
If you enjoy super hero fiction, fantasy or post-apocalyptic stuff this is your bag. If you just love great character driven stories, look no further.
It's great having the boxed set when I run into a binge-worthy series. Although it does take some more discipline to stop at the end of a book and go to bed (late) when I can just move onto the next page and be into a new story.
Easily one of my ALL-TIME favorite trilogies in ANY genre, noting that "The Murder of Crows" series covers so many potential writing categories that it's almost a shame to have to limit it in any way! I have read each of the individual books before* (and typically at least twice each as soon as their successors were released) and still cannot fully fathom how Tullbane takes the story of the snarky, street-wise orphan Damian from essentially Nowheresville to becoming arguably the most powerful being on the planet!
First to the writing itself: Tullbane's style is as free-flowing, tense and suspenseful as you'll find. Which only goes to bring to full-fledged life his characters, their world, and - in the case of the good guys - their responsibilites. And what made it even more exciting to me - someone that is who has enjoyed both the super-hero focus from the days of Marvel's golden era to more recent stories like this - is that the powers we see are unusually unique and as varied as they come! And to make it all even more just brain-shatteringly awesome is that it only took one (1!!!) person in the past with powers to bring all this about, not only reshaping humanity but the very Earth itself!
Next of course you just have to be in awe of the construction of these stories. Sure, the first two are very "Academy-centric" but in a way I challenge you to find in other tales. Most Universities even of this ilk would not sit back and let their charges be put through some of the trials and tribulations we see, with Damian suffering more than his fair share of visits to the campus emergency ward. But then Tullbane has the sheer (redacted) ... um, let's call it bravery to take the final chapter away from the comfort of the hallowed halls of the aforementioned school environment and take many of our heroes into the very VERY Wild West. It makes for incredible variety, again incredible tension and action and even ultimately a level of tragedy that I would have never seen coming.
Damian's journey is easily one of the most gut-wrenching and truly tragic parts of this collection (which I should note is also supported by various novellas and a separate novel, namely, "The Queen of Smiles"). To go from how he became an orphan through his growth as a (un)caring Power of not only extremely unusual but unmeasurably deadly ability is jaw-dropping. Again, to see this story unfold from the first page to the last will leave you thoroughly stunned and amazed. And knowing it continues as I mentioned (and with luck in future tales) is just the icing on top!
Fantastic in every way! If you love reading with no caveats at all, you should check out this box set!
*kindly note that I did not include a "read date" for the boxed set as I do not include re-reads toward my yearly target counts.
This is the closest any book has come to scratching the Worm itch. Really well-paced, gritty take on superheroes in a post-apocalyptic world. There's some juvenile dialogue which initially put me off, but the characters and action are very adult, and the female characters have just as much personality and agency as the male characters.
