Overall: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Plot/Storyline: 📖📖📖📖📖
Feels: 🦋🦋🦋🦋
Emotional Depth: 💔💔💔💔
Sexual Tension: ⚡⚡⚡⚡
Romance: 💞💞💞💞
Sensuality: 💋💋💋 (These were wonderfully emotional but I prefer a touch more explicit in my intimate scenes)
Sex Scene Length: 🍑🍑
Steam Scale (Number of Sex Scenes): 🔥🔥🔥 (3-4 depending how you count. Some are close together, some are on the short side.)
Humor: Just a touch
Perspective: Third person from both the hero and heroine and a couple shorter chapters from a side character (Gabriel) so we can understand more of the plot/villain.

(These are all personal preference on a scale of 1-5 (yours ratings may vary depending what gives you feels and how you prefer you sex scenes written, etc) except the Steam Scale which follows our chart from The Ton and Tartans Book Club )

Should I read in order?
While it’s not totally necessary, I would say yes. You’ll get more background on the setting, time period, and most importantly, Pedro’s (our hero) character and history.

Basic plot:
Anne goes on behalf of her heavily pregnant sister-in-law to a neighbor to teach them about grafting the grape vines after phylloxera – but arrives at the wrong house. After Pedro assumes she is a prostitute there to service him, attempts on their lives lead them on an adventure to safety.

Give this a try if you want:
- 1872 time period (Luis I ruling Portugal)
- Portugal setting (Douro Valley, Quinta do Vesuvio)
- antihero reformed (read book 1, The True Purpose of Vines, to get his full story)
- forbidden love – the hero is rather the villain of book 1 – he tried to win the heroine but lost her to Griffin. His heroine is Griffin’s younger sister
- hero doesn’t like to be touched
- protector hero
- plenty of action and suspense scenes – there is a rather intense villain after them
- road trip romance
- opposites attract
- age gap (older hero) – Pedro is 13 years older than Anne
- hero nurses heroine back to health
- emotionally strong hero (hero cries)
- medium steam – 3-4 scenes depending how you count

Ages:
- Heroine is 18, hero is 31

My thoughts:
I really enjoyed book 1 of the Winemakers series by Siniscalchi – but this one I LOVED. She has a style of writing that really pulled me in and didn’t let go. The tension building was so good and the emotional grasp gutting at times in the best way.

Pedro is our antihero, the villainish figure from book 1 and we get his full story here. He is immediately drawn to Anne. He fights his attraction to her and his consuming feelings and thoughts provide the most wonderful romance tension. You are in his head quite a bit – I love getting more hero perspective. I ended up falling utterly in love with Pedro.

Anne was an absolute delight too. A touch innocent, she is finding herself and her strength on this road trip journey of necessity. I loved her character, I loved how she handled her feelings for Pedro and also how she was able to think through dangerous situations she was in.

I’m usually not big on action in my romance, but I was so on the edge of my seat with this one in some parts in the best way. I was chasing their HEA just as hard as these two lovely characters. It truly is a wonderful love story. The emotional pull I had was so strong. When they ached, I ached. I will not be forgetting Pedro and Anne anytime soon.

Quotes/thoughts:

Content warnings:

Locations of kisses/intimate scenes: Note that Siniscalchi’s scenes are on the light side, explicitly. They focus on feels and emotions more than details.

Well, I freaking loved this! This world-building is just too good!

And when the villain of book one becomes the MMC of book two?? Oh yes.

Brother’s enemy, class difference, English-Portuguese culture clash, and.. is it still a roadtrip if it’s on a yacht? 😆 This romance was just as forbidden as the first book, and this couple was just as compatible.

And this MMC 🥵 The Portuguese aristocrat anti-hero, strategic, bossy, intense gaze guy of questionable morals who doesn’t like to be touched, becoming totally unhinged and obsessed with our British heroine. If you like them hot, broody, and a little bit nuts, let me present the Count of Almoster. This is one of the few times Hades and Persephone references didn’t make me roll my eyes. Because yeah, he had some major underworld vibes.

Also, the plot! I am the queen of disliking romance books with clue-finding political intrigue subplots. But it might be a ‘I like it so much that I have really high standards for it’ thing—because I loved it here! Maybe because it tied in so well to the MCs’ character arcs? Maybe because it felt so grounded in the waning imperial power of Portugal? Or maybe it was how volatile the Portuguese aristocracy felt—this was some Alexandre Dumas tier drama and I loved it.

I was living for the world-building in this one. We went to more cities, saw a Portuguese colony, met a bunch more Portuguese side characters (who all get their own books, right?), I was learning Portuguese medieval history, and the main plot drama highlighted an element of the transatlantic slave trade that I’d never even considered before.

This one upped the spice and there was a very nerdy Gyges Ring sexy time motif throughout that I was loving (any book that can incorporate Plato’s Republic into a sex scene gets my stamp of approval).

We really enjoyed this unconventional historical romance set in late-19th Century Portugal. Our focus is on Pedro Duan, a "heartless" Portuguese count, and Anne Maxwell, the most innocent of English roses.

Pedro is a quintessential tortured hero. He's made a lot of bad choices in the past. Some of those bad choices were due to circumstance, and shaped the man he has become. Others, though, he has fully embraced as a bad choice, because he's decided he's a bad, bad man. One of those choices? To try to elope with Anne's sister-in-law to "save" her from her marriage. (She didn't need to be saved.)

Anne, on the other hand, keeps a locket around her neck with a list of her ideal romantic prince's attributes (with things like "noble" underlined in bold). She totes around an elderly pug named James, uncomplainingly tutors her young nephew, and believes wholeheartedly that human nature is innately good. What better match for her is there than Pedro, self-proclaimed denizen of the darkness?

The two are thrown together through the machinations of a truly evil villain (as opposed to Pedro's semi-villainous flailing). Anne has to stick close to Pedro's side as he works to clear his name (she's his only alibi). You're not a romance reader if you don't know what inevitably happens when two healthy, attractive people are stuck together on a luxury yacht while they try to evade slave traders and other baddies. On top of it all, Pedro has never come clean about his relationship with Anne's brother and sister-in-law OR the rest of his past.

We really enjoyed the new-to-us setting and history, and are looking forward to reading more from Siniscalchi! 3.5 stars rounded to 4.

This objective review is based on a complimentary copy of the novel.

I am retiring this book 48% in.
I really did give it a good go but boy was the progress slow.
The whole time I was feeling I was reading a second half of a book and missed on many important details about main and side characters.
And at the same time it felt excruciatingly slow.
The fact that the hero could not handle being touched was interesting but that’s not enough to hold the whole book.

“When we are young, we believe people are absolutely good or absolutely bad. But the greatest vintage is not perfect, and the simplest wine can have redeeming qualities.”

This historical romance is to be savoured as one would savour a freshly baked Pão de Deus ~ slowly, allowing each bite to reveal a little slice of Heaven.

Speaking of slices of Heaven, Pedro Daun, the Count of Almoster, is one heck of a swoon-worthy character. Like the Pão de Deus, meaning ‘bread of God,’ the Count has been crafted as a little exotic, a little soft and fluffy inside and, oh, so deliciously good. He comes across as untouchable, hardened by life, but I’m as much a sucker for brown eyes as this trope, so I was rooting for him from the start! I was happy to see Pedro again as I wanted to know more about his story and see if he could redeem himself after the havoc he wreaked in ‘The True Purpose of Vines.” I loved watching Pedro and Ana’s growth; witnessing them overcoming their flaws as a precursor to a deeper friendship. Siniscalchi has penned a heart-rendering redemption tale and you won’t want to miss it.

You’ll love the ‘angel’ sent to aid Pedro in his transformation. I was so happy to see Siniscalchi craft this character with such strength and grace. This romance was sweet, and plausible in development, and the tension between the characters and against them kept me on the edge of my seat.

Approach with the same caution you’d have when nibbling a Pão de Deus fresh from the oven ~ it’s steamy and hot! I’m not a romance reader, but I’ll give Siniscalchi credit; this was tastefully written despite feeling that I needed a cold shower!

I enjoyed the story within the story featuring Dom Pedro and Ines de Castro’s tragic love story. I’d never heard of this royal tale before and my interest was piqued. I love it when a book leads me to the computer to research a little more.

Pedro’s story touched my heart. It transported me to Portugal and allowed me to watch the sunset and enjoy the Fado once more. I will remember this story for quite some time and will heed the advice given in the quote above.

Giovanna, not only have you brought Portugal alive for your readers, but you’ve also created a sequel that rivals the success of your debut in this series! I can’t wait for Henrique’s story!

It is very rarely when I read historical love romances, but I wanted to read Pedro's story soo bad. And this book was everything that I wanted it to be and more.

I know that in the previous book Pedro's behaviour was a bit bad, but I finally understood why. He was a brilliant man, who didn't believe that he can have redemption and find true love. He was hunted by his past and couldn't let go of it. When he first met Anne, he was literally mesmerized by her. For him she was an angel. I am sure that this was the time when he fall for her, but he didn't wanted to admit it.

Anne was a beautiful young woman that wanted to find her perfect suitor of a man. All those dreams changed when she met Pedro. He was handsome devil with so much passion in his eyes. I definately felt the pull between them, because it was that strong.

I am soo happy that he wanted to be around her all the time, because he couldn't fight his feelings. Every single time he was away from her, it was a pure torture. The moment he decided to give himself a chance to be happy, was the best moment ever.

I also loved the love scenes between them. The passion and the heat...they couldn't be missed ♥️.

Of course the story had it's bad guys and drama, but it was a minimum. This is what I liked the most - the story showed them, their banter, their feelings, their love and their past mistakes. It was focused in them. For me the story was perfect and Giovanna Siniscalchi done a wonderful job, delivering us Pedro and Anne's love story. I am in love with the story, the characters...literally the whole book.

To Giovanna: "Thank you for giving me the chance to get to know their world, to walk with them and to experience a wonderful love story.
Thank you soo much for this ARC copy 😘😘😘!

This story surprised me in it's beautiful intensity. The tension created through the emotions is pure perfection. What got to me the most was the power of redemption for Pedro. He is written quite masterfully, embracing the darkness while still showing cracks of light beneath the armor he has built around his heart. Life has done him wrong again and again, that cannot help but shape him. Then there is Anne, with her pure naiveté backed with a resilient backbone and strength of an avenging angel. Their story is a beautiful slow burn backed with beautiful passion. Siniscalchi writes with a vivid paintbrush. Descriptions of emotions evoking an ethereal quality that leaps of the page in a colorful image. Add in the past backgrounds with Anne's brother and sister-in-law, giving the story an extra depth of resolution. I loved that despite their past, Julia was still cheering for them from the start. The culmination of the battle against Ulrich played out like a blockbuster movie, coming alive in it's intensity. All in all, this is a remarkably beautiful story of redemption and rebirth.

This book is on my shortlist of best HR reads of the year, and this author ranks among my top new HR writers in recent memory. Just like the first book in the series (which you need to read if you haven't), this does a masterful job of depicting setting, character, and the culture of the area. The reader is truly transported to the region (which is a nice change of pace from the typical Regency English setting). The MC's are vivid, with the MMC, who started as the villain in the last book, becoming successfully redeemed and fully fleshed out here. The romance is steamy and romantic without being overdone. The writing style is, in a word, beautiful.

If you're new to HR's, or just getting back to them, do not skip over this book or this talented writer.

Are you a fan of old-school romance, but want something a bit more modern? Siniscalchi's The Taste of Light has that sweeping, epic feel to it, with lots of lush description, an action-packed plot, and the classic broken alpha male meets naive, innocent woman. While this is not my personal favorite character type, those who love it will gobble this book up. The writing is solid, with many lovely lines throughout. The 1870s Portugal setting is superbly done, full of detailed research without ever being heavy-handed. The reader gets to visit vineyards, bullfighting rings, lavish mansions, and more. For those looking for steam level, the love scenes are emotional and poetical rather than starkly descriptive, but they are on the page. If you're looking for that old romance feel and/or want to try historical romance in a setting we don't usually see, this book might be right up your alley.

Y’all. I love a tortured hero and Pedro is 100% that. I loved him and Anne together. The road-trip aspect is also one of my favs! And a road-trip to escape a bad guy? Yep sign me up.

I was fortunate to be sent the ARC of this novel and was so excited and grateful to be thought of and trusted to review ahead of its official release next week (13 Dec).

I was very hesitant to agree, because some part of me felt an obligation to give a more favoured review. However, Giovanna and I had a long chat and she convinced me she wanted an honest reviewer after reading my other reviews - especially my recent CoHo post!

I’m glad I gave it a go. Although it’s not necessary to read the books in order, I read this one (a sequel) having not read the first and at times felt I was missing some of the depth of the characters - in particular Pedro our lead. I’ve since found out Pedro wasn’t a very liked character in her first novel.

I also don’t like an age gap love affair… if that’s your thing, give this a go.. Anne is 18, Pedro is in his 30s. I don’t find it sexy, I find it very off putting but I appreciate lots of people love it. I just can’t buy the chemistry between a couple with this kind of age gap and therefore couldn’t get into the romance as well as other books of this nature.

One thing I will say, Giovanna is a fantastic writer. She is brilliant at setting the scene and the action throughout the book really had you on the edge of your seat. I wasn’t a fan of the time period it was set in but would definitely read more of her work if she picked other timelines!

Received this ARC for an honest review.

After a horrible event transpired in Mozambique, Pedro Daun returned to Portugal a broken man. Shunned and outcast, until salvation walked through his door. His angel to melt away decades of pain and torment inside.

But that salvation ripped from his fingers when his Mozambique past caught up with him. Now Pedro is running out of time to clear his name and save his angel who is trying to save him back.

A love story without being too much. An adventure without being ridiculous. Fantastic book by Siniscalchi.

Though I will say there were a few parts in the book that seemed to be missing some context. Almost like parts were skipped. And it did take about 50 pages to get into the book to figure out just who everyone was. But overall 🙌🙌🙌

Excuse me while I retrieve my jaw from the floor and collect my thoughts. While I was reading this novel, I would tell anyone who listened that this was the most adventurous romance novel I have ever read. I can’t even count how many times I stopped to google the definition of a word, both English and Portuguese words! To look at a map of Portugal and trace the route Pedro and Anne took on the yacht. To see the lighthouse at Navarre and learn about the waves. This book spoke to so so much more than just my romantic heart. I feel truly enriched.

This book was an adventure. There was political intrigue, blackmail, court drama, a pug, winemaking, horse talk and bull rings. But it wasn’t adventure for the sake of having a zany plot. The intricacies moved forward the central relationship between Anne and Pedro. There wasn’t one “oh my gosh I’m in love with you now” moment. There was minimal “I’m not good enough/not desirable/honorable” whatever BS often gets woven through romance books to create angst. There really was no need. These characters were developed and real. The outside actions of the plot created the situations which lead to developing emotions. It was a slow burn. The emotion and tension between them was so beautiful and real. And just HOW satisfying was it to see a character like Pedro turn to mush for Anne. He couldn’t deny it. And he tried. This was a romantic book in many senses of the word.

I’m no English lit major, so I rarely ever talk about the writing itself. I will attempt a clumsy explanation of why it was so beautiful. The writing really brought out one’s senses. What I mean is, the description was so vivid. I have a very clear picture in my minds eye what each location looks like. The sun over fields, reflecting off buildings, the sand, water, greenery, flowers. I can hear the guitar and soft lullabies being played, providing comfort. I can smell the salt air, the fragrance of lush flowers. I can feel the softness of Erebus’s mane, Pedro’s hair escaping its tie, his beard. Anne’s hair, the scar on her palms.

My only criticism came early, and that was that I found the prologue confusing. There were many people and relations introduced and I just couldn’t keep track. As the rest of the story unfolded, I cared less and less about these other people. I knew the prologue was important to set up shared experiences and the root of Pedro’s trauma but I couldn’t fully appreciate it. What I did appreciate, however, was the author choosing to include a heavy issue like the slave trade and colonialism. Showing yet another side to this piece of shared history.

I’ve rambled on enough - that’s how you know I really like a book when I can’t shut up about it!!

I can’t wait to read this whole series!!

I don't really write reviews I tried a few times, but I guess I don't have the commitment to do this regularly.
But when the author contacted me to read her book and do an honesty review, I was like "hell yes".
Lately I've been really strict about only reading series in order (sometimes I break this, but I try not), so I was disappointed when I realized that due to the I had to read and publish the review for this book I wasn't going to have time to read book 1. And folks, I recommend, read book 1. Although I felt that I didn't spoil my reading, I LOVE a reformed villain who gets he's own book and that's what we have with Pedro, so if we can, read book 1 before book 2 (it's on Kindle Unlimited).

So now let's start talking about A Taste of Light.
Firs of all I was excited to read a Historical Romance setting in Portugal, even tough I never been in the region that the characters live, I’ve been to the country a few times before and when they arrived in Lisbon a lot of the place felt familiar from today’s tourist attractions on the city.

The main characters:

We have the hero Pedro, whom is the villain in the first book of the series, so I missed this whole development. But we can gather from the beginning of this book that he’s a very grump hero and has a darkness (for very intense and justified reasons) inside of him that follows him since before the events of book 1. And I really liked this, because I felt with that, I really could understand the character growth through the book.

And we have a Sunshine heroine Miss Anne (Ana) Maxwell, a woman who sees the good in everybody and firmly believes in love, a true light in Pedro’s life. She also carries inside of her some regrets and it’s very moving when she confides them to Pedro.

I really enjoyed the romance, from the very beginning, I love when the hero or heroine mistake the other when meeting them, this is on my top 3 of meet cute in books. Pedro was a very damaged Hero, and only his Ana had the ability to save him from himself, and their love story was beautifully written. Although I wished some of their scenes were a little bit more spice. I love they had the road trip/ forced proximity trope on their romance as well.

Giovanna is a great writer; I really enjoyed her style. Definitely will read more from this author

2/5🌶

This story was action packed, full of history, intrigue, and a great love story.

I didn't get to read the first book in this series but it doesn't affect this story at all. From my understanding this book is a redemption arc for Pedro Daun, who was somewhat of the antagonist in the first story with Griffin and Julia.

Tropes:
Rival's sister
Military hero
Age gap
Murder plot
Fugitives on the run
Forced proximity
Grumpy/sunshine

Set in Portugal and their vineyards, you get a good sense of the time period and what happened to the local wineries. In the beginning you already have drama happening with Pedro and Griffin, and you get a glimpse of the animosity. Anne, Griffin's sister, is a quintessential innocent who has all the hope and naivete of an 18 year old. When Anne is at the wrong place at the wrong time she's pushed into a scandal and goes on the run with Pedro. Of course Pedro being the honorable man that he is sets out to protect Anne at all costs but can't help feeling drawn to her light and love. Even with his past, demons, and aversion to physical touch they find a way to get past all that and forge a deep bond.

So much happens in this story but it's not overdone. Right when you think things are safe, danger comes around the corner and they are on the run again. This is definitely a page turner and you won't get bored. I love that Anne finds her backbone and grows stronger and independent as the story progresses. And I loved seeing the way love transforms and heals Pedro in ways he didn't think was possible. Gotta love the tortured soul finding love.

There are a few spicy scenes but they aren't overly detailed but also somewhat poetic. They were sweet and satisfying 😌

I received an ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

The Taste of Light is book 2 in the Winemakers series, and it can be read as a standalone, but I truly recommend reading “The True Purpose of Wines” book 1 if you didn’t. It’s an amazing read, and you’ll have a glimpse of Pedro and Anne there.

The story is exactly what the title says. Pedro is an antihero (and I’m a sucker for them) with a dark and torturous past. He grew up under the leash of an abusive father, molding his complex character and a force to reckon with. He meets Anne, the sister of an old rival, and due to some false allegations, they are forced to flee together. Anne is pure light. Young, carefree, with not a mean bone in her body. She sees the good in people and tries to always see the bright side of life, but she’s strong as a storm and a splendid match to the broody soldier.

The setting is Portugal in the 1870s. The plot brings a lot of history, but not only as a background, since the author masterfully inserted the characters as active participants in it, also presenting us with the beautiful and sad love story of Dom Pedro and Inês de Castro as part of the plot.

The book has a beautiful narrative with an elaborate vocabulary, lending poetry to the lines. The evolution of the story and the characters are full of conspiracies, betrayals, redemptions, and love, lots of love with Anne finally wrapping herself around Pedro’s heart to never let go.

Anne is a love poem herself, and her interaction with Pedro is enchanting and sublime. Pedro’s evolution is impressive and will give you goosebumps. They understand each other at the most elementary level. Sometimes there’s no need for words between them and, when they succumb to their heart, they surprise us with some fun and spicy moments.

The ending is harrowing and will leave you biting your nails and cheering for their deserved happiness. If you love historical romance, with a breathtaking antihero, a strong heroine, immersed in real history, lots of love and redemption, this is your next read!

I actually enjoyed The Taste of Light better than the previous book in this series. The author wrote a redemption piece for Pedro. He definitely ended up the villain in the previous book. Again the tale comes together beautifully. Forbidden Fruit, one he can’t have. Why do authors suck me in with that narrative? Illegal fall for it everytime.
Anne decides to help her brother and sister in law out by spreading the news to the neighbors on how to combat the Phylloxera. When she comes across an estate that’s beautiful but the crops have been ravaged but Phylloxera. She ends up being in the wrong place at the wrong time and ends up on an adventure. Of not only self discovery but of her heart as well.
Pedro was ready to strike a deal with the king to marry the princess. Until his past came back to haunt him. While on the run for being accused of an attempt on the King’s life. Trying to clear his name as well as protect the beautiful woman by his side becomes a bigger task and adventure than he realized. Her life has been threatened because of him. She’s the sister of the man he hates for stealing Julia. Can’t be coincidence, could it? Sounds more like Karma to me. What he doesn’t expect is to lose control. Anne has the power to bring him to his knees, and he can’t let that happen.
What happens between Anne and Pedro?
Does Pedro make everything right?
The growth of Pedro’s character in this book is leaps and bounds. I didn’t care for him prior to reading this book, but now I have a soft spot.
If you enjoy a romance adventure this book is for you. And you don’t necessarily have to read the previous book. It works very well as a standalone novel.

This book is everything a historical romance should be, and more. It has a beautiful sense of emotionality and place. Deep, but not angsty. Breathtaking.

The Taste of Light is set in Portugal in the late nineteenth century. Siniscalchi's prose effortlessly transports the reader to this sensual setting awash in natural beauty and political intrigue. The geographic and historical detail is dazzling, yet it doesn't overpower the story. Siniscalchi has obviously done her research, but she uses her extensive knowledge to enhance the plot rather than overload the reader with unnecessary exposition.

The main characters are well drawn, nuanced and unique. I was afraid Pedro would fall into the "typical" historical romance antihero caricature and that Anne would be the "perfect" sweet, innocent heroine - I was delighted when neither of them accepted those confining roles. They are three dimensional, complex and easy to fall in love with.

Siniscalchi's prose is beautifully rich and textured. It comes right up to the point of being too much, but doesn't cross the line... if you like emotional, descriptive historical romance (and who doesn't?) you'll love this book!

The only critiques I would offer are that a few of of the smaller subplots seemed like afterthoughts, and the book probably could have done without them. The prologue also felt a little much - it's quite long, and if you haven't read the first book (like I hadn't), it could be confusing with a lot of unknown characters all on page at once.

Overall, a wonderful read. Highly recommended!

I received a free ARC of The Taste of Light in exchange for an honest review.

“Love isn’t the stuff of fairy tales, where people are perfect and do all the right things. Love is messy, primal, and flawed.”

Pedro. That’s it. That’s my review.

Just kidding, but seriously WHAT! I hated Pedro in the first book. HATED him. Now I cannot get him out of my head. I was hesitant to read this one because I disliked him so much. But guys, he is redeemable!! I absolutely loved learning more about his character, what motivates him, what molded him into the man we knew and the man he becomes. Oh my goodness, guys, this book!

What I love most about Giovanna’s writing style is how she incorporates the themes of her book through her stories. She is incredibly creative, descriptive, and poetic with her storytelling. And her characters are vivid, realistic, and extremely loveable. I seriously cannot stop thinking about Pedro!

In the first book, we get a glimpse into his abusive childhood. And yeah, I felt bad for him then, but it was no excuse for what he had done to Julia and Griffin. Learning more about his character, why he was cruel, why he closed himself off. It all makes sense. And Anna is this bright light that turns up unexpectedly in his life. Shining her light in the corners of his mind that had been filled with darkness.

Their adventure is not a unique one for a romance, but their love story absolutely is. I love that Anna appears to be your average young maiden from every other romance. But she was full of surprises. I love her! And she is the PERFECT match for Pedro. Seriously, this book is incredible!

I received an eARC of this book for my honest opinion

Normally I am not a big fan of historical romance books unless they’re paranormal, but when I was asked if I would be interested in reviewing this book, I decided to give it a try and wow I am so happy that I did. When reading this book, you will get a little of everything from a great romantic plot, action, some humor, sexual tension, betrayal and fighting for the right cause. Here is the basics of the plot:

Anne travels to her brother’s estate to help her sister-in-law who is pregnant. While there she takes over for her sister-in-law and travels to neighbors to teach them how to get their vines healthy again. However, Anne goes to the wrong house and meets a handsome but standoffish male. Pedro assumes that she is prostitute that his brother sent to him (Image having to tell your grandkids that story) but everything goes wrong right away for both of them, and they are sent running for their lives, and they have a great adventure to secure their safety and innocents.

I really enjoyed the writing style of Siniscalchi, she has a way with words that brought the Portugal lands to life for me. Not only the land but the characters too, I found myself able to connect with all the characters, well not the villain of the story but everyone else. I was able to start this book and finish it in a day and that is all because of Siniscalchi's way to pull into the book and not wanting to put it down. I loved the build up of romance and all the emotional scenes really give the characters a new depth.

While reading this book I have added visiting Portugal to my must visit countries and I cannot wait to see with my own eyes the countryside of Portugal.

I really could go on and on but I won’t because I do not want to spoil anything.

I want to thank Giovanna Siniscalchi for the opportunity to read and review this book.

The Taste of Light is a historical romance tale and the second book in the series. I was pleasantly surprise by the first book and enjoyed Giovanna’s story telling.

This tale is richly told from 1872 Portugal and port to port as our characters are on the run. The story is steeped in history, traditions, cultures, a conspiracy and accusations and the love of winemaking. There is heartbreak, compassion and passion, tenderness, danger and tension, angst and animosity, chemistry and romance.
We met Pedro in the first book but he is front and centre in this book. We find that there is so much more to this character and how he has been shaped. It is hard not to like him. As long as he cannot reconcile his past and present there is no future and all that he longs for.
Anne finds herself in the most unlikely of circumstances and on a ‘road trip’. She is young and naïve but is full of light and wonder but don’t let that fool you. Under it all is a woman that has a backbone and strength.
Will they make it together or will the past be too much to overcome?
This intricately woven tale will have you hoping against hope that love will prevail.

5 Stars! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

This historical romance was fantastic........this is book 2 in this series and I would recommend reading book 1 first. I can say that while I did enjoy book 1, I loved this book, being 2nd in the series with my every being.

Can I say......I was not happy with Pedro in book 1....not what so ever and never ever in a million years I would end up liking him so much in book 2.....I know get it.....and my heart.... Pedro is haunted by his past and wants love. Pedro truly believe he once had love, but choice in the matter...it did not happen. A chance encounter and ending up on the run, he meets Anne.

Anne... I loved Anne so much and just her being so kind....she is helping her brother and also travels to help the other neighbors understand and learn how to take care of their vines..and an encounter she meets Pedro...and Pedro at first did not take to kind to Anne...and both end up on the run. Why are they running?

Will Pedro and Anne connect and Pedro find what he is looking for?

Chemistry, banter, intensity for sure.....I Loved Pedro and Anne in this story so much!

Well Done!!

The Taste of Light Book 2

This book is a masterpiece of epic proportions, incorporating timeless qualities and well-developed characters. It’s a fast-paced story, never boring. It is so well written that I never once had to question the worth of this work. The plot was well thought out, and the settings were so lifelike that it was as if I was seeing it myself.
All of the characters were so believable and had a grand background that gave you tidbits of their past throughout the story. Pedro had my stomach doing flips throughout, trying to hold back from Anne, who is one of the most likable female heroines that I have read in a long time. She was sweet most of the time but outgoing when slighted.
The time period was spot on and really laid the pressure on the characters to conform to the times. The villain was a total creep… the kind that still exists today and was relatable in the way that his main cash crop was selling people. He was a disgusting man who I couldn’t wait to see justice catch up to. But he had things of his own going on that made him more rounded as a villain.
This story is a must-read. The steamy scenes were immaculate and filled with emotions—new, hot, and fun. There is a happy ending, but it was a struggle to get there, making it much sweeter once everything around these main characters settled down. Loved it!

Ratings:
General ⭐⭐⭐⭐.25 (I really liked it)
Spice 🌶️.5 (2-3 not overly descriptive scenes)

Technical information:
Historical romance. Third person. Double POV. Single timeline.

Tropes:
Hero tortured by his past, morally gray and bossy hero, damsel in distress heroine, grumpy/sunshine, enemy's sister, fugitive hero "kidnapping" heroine to go with him.

My opinion:
I really enjoyed reading this book, despite historical romance not being my favourite romance subgenre. This book was a perfect mixture of history, drama, action, treasons, intrigues and of course love in the high society of Portugal. Pedro and Anne are extremely different. Anne has a dream of finding her perfect husband, and Pedro is too damaged to fall in love. I love how Anne manages to melt his heart and heal his emotional wounds and all that in the mids of action/persecution/running away. I especially love that Pedro's nickname for Anne is Angel.
"I keep thinking you will open your angel's wings and take to the sky." His voice came out gravelly, and he exhaled. Anne sifted her fingers through his hair and brushed her lips against his neck. "If I had wings, they would only serve to bring me back to you."

Special thanks to the author for giving me a complimentary copy in exchange for my honest opinion

“The Taste of Light” is intense, yet beautiful which is exactly what I expected having already read “The True Purpose of Vines.” The villain from book 1 is the main character in book 2, an interesting twist.
The depth of the characters is remarkable. Pedro, Count of Almoster, is dark and broody, yet we see just enough light in him to root for his deliverance. Nothing in Pedro’s life has been easy, but he is so much more that what has happened to him. Anne is more than the young and naïve girl initially presented. She is resilient, resourceful, and the angel Pedro needs. Their story is a beautiful and passionate despite Pedro’s rocky past with Anne’s brother and sister-in-law.
The world-building in “The Taste of Light” was phenomenal and beautifully done. The descriptions are perfect and create a brilliant picture for the reader. The final scene with Ulrich seemed more like a movie than a book due to the descriptions, bringing the scene to life. Intense is an understatement. “The Taste of Light” is an extraordinarily stunning story of deliverance for the dark Count of Almoster.

The Taste of Light (The Winemakers Book 2) by Giovanna Siniscalchi is an opposite attract, forced proximity historical romance. This book is the part of a series but can be read standalone.

Pedro Daun lost his bride to an Englishman and he just wants to get drunk off wine and forget his past when he encounters Anne Maxwell. Anne is helping her sister-in-law and dreaming of finding her perfect suitor. A false accusation turns both of them to fugitives.

This book has more than just romance, there is also action and mystery. It is also hotter than I expected for a historical romance. The scene with red currants is surprising. There are great twists and turns which give the story great complexity. I love Pedro’s balance between strong warrior and tender lover. Anne also showed great strength in pushing through Pedro’s walls. I’m not going to give spoilers but there is a sad part that I don’t think needed to happen. The Taste of Light is a great addition to the Winemakers series.

5/5

I was honored to receive an ARC.

Story about Anne and Pedro. Anne is helping her brother and sister-in-law by explaining to other wineries in the area how to rebuild after a blight destroyed the grapes. She visits Pedro right when a sinister plot is occurring to frame him for a political assassination. They escape his estate and go on the run to try and find evidence to clear his name.

I found the beginning of the book a little confusing as I tried to get the characters and time period sorted out. Once Anne and Pedro meet though, everything falls into place, and I started to really enjoy it.

I loved the setting in Portugal as many of the historical novels I’ve read were set in England. The author brings the history and locations to life. She also includes info about the tragic love story between Dom Pedro and Ines de Castro. I had never heard the story but the author’s notes explain where you can visit to see their tombs.

I loved the way the relationship between Anne and Pedro developed. He is a great wounded hero who needs to learn to accept love. She is strong and feisty, but knows when to take action and when to be patient. I love smart heroines who make smart decisions, and Anne is definitely one of them.

Overall, this was a really enjoyable read. I haven’t read a historical romance in a while, but this makes me want to pick up more. I also really want to visit Portugal now and learn more about the history of the country.

The Taste of Light (The Winemakers Book 2) by Giovanna Siniscalchi. This can be read as a standalone but I highly recommend reading the first book. This is the story of Pedro and Anne who are in the first book a tiny bit. Pedro has had a hard life, growing up with a very abusive father and that has made him tough. When he meets Anne its not under the best of circumstances and they have to flee together. Anne is the total opposite of Pedro, she is fun and full of life and sees the good in everything and everyone. Will they be able to flee the false accusations against them and will they fall in love in the process. This book is a page turner and will leave you guessing up to the very end. It's also very haunting. I felt like I was in the wine country of Portugal and the writing was so beautiful it takes to that time and place. If you love historical romances then pick this book up!

One thing i love about this read is the tension and honestly just puts you in your feels. I can't express enough how i enjoyed these characters i loved Anne from the get-go, and Although Padro was kind of dark and i guess you can call him a villain I'd say he redeemed himself in the end.
