Taken from The Wild and thrust into a deadly situation in a strange realm, I have no choice but to accept my role in the prophecy. As new friends and new threats gather, I prepare to say goodbye to loved ones—and, quite possibly, the world as we know it.

Spoiler- 9 books! 9 books in this whole series. And I still have so many questions after this very last book. Felt like the author (who I really love) was just ready to end the series. Even with Goddess powers she couldn’t resurrect her love and her friend?!? Out of 3 kick ass girls… she doesn’t even get a happy ending…but the other two do. I really enjoyed all 8 other books… but this one felt like a huge build up (so many trials it was almost redundant) to an anti climatic ending. I was pretty sad.
I loved this series until this book. Seemed rushed. It could have been split into 2 books. The deaths were glossed over. The gates were interesting but hurried. As I read all 3 series leading up to this, the ending was blah. It left me wanting more.
You know those shows that get cancelled so they rush their big reveal plans into one episode? Well this was like that. Tons of new people thrown in the first two chapters that be are supposed to accept at face value. Deaths galore, also with no real purpose. It is like the author decided to just wrap up this world instead of continuing the story. Just a terrible thing to write. I cannot possibly go into how bad it is without spoilers so I won't bother. I recommend you not bother with this book either.
May contain spoilers, ok you know it does. sorry not sorry 😝 ********************************* I was really torn with how to rate this one. I loved the whole series, whether it was charecter, plot, or world building. Now, with that in mind, this last part of the saga seemed rushed. I didn't feel the sane relationship built between Aster and her Vamp. Where the Brit and Londens groups/crews felt close and tight-knit Aster's seem filled with a lack of trust and betrayal. It might have been nice if this book was more about her, Dorian, and the crew. Maybe if the author ended this book on a cliffhanger of the kidnapping, and the started another book with the travels and journey of the chosen 3 gaining the knowledge they needed to restore the sun and then doing it. Then, looking at the gates and battles, we'll they were decent, maybe ok reaching for good? I don't want to spoil it with all the nitt grity, but the details were lacking. Why were powers taken? What powers of Ra did they receive? I mean, we were told they had to make space for his, but..... I don't remember any. I'm just saying this had the potential to be amazing instead of ok! Now I have questions... How is it fair that B and L get HEA, but A is screwed over? A loses loved ones and friends? Come on now, that's harsh. Then they split up with a stay in touch? Really? Now, are they still needed by Ra? Did they all get their magic back? Why didn't a god... like Ra come to them once the task was completed? A thank you would have been nice. Do they still contain part of Ra, and once again, what did they have? They guessed that they didn't have to do this every day, but how do we really know? If Max wasn't killed by a demon, why didn't he return with the others? If Dorien drained on part of Ra, why didn't it embu him with abilities or make him explode? Wouldn't that have affected Ra over all if he had 4 representations, and the one that died was darkness and night? Wouldn't that have killed off the darkness? Also, Dorian wasn't killed by demons. He sacrificed himself to deal with part of a God, so why the hell didn't he come back either? My last pet peve is there really isn't a satisfying conclusion. What happens to all our heroins? Aster is being left alone, and the others just portal to check on their Vamps... we don't get to see anything that happens to them, or find out who of our favorite charecters that have been built over 9 books survives. I really hope we get another book in this world. One in which we can get some damn answers. I want one with all 3 A,B, &L! Letting us see they have stuck together and supported each other. Maybe to save those left behind? Or to free Ra, so that he can once again fight for the light. What happens to everyone one else? The royal twins, the witch school, the kids in dc, the ghost pack without out a leader? There is still so much this world can offer, I really hope the author fixes some of this last one by coming out with another that explains it all.
I am stunned! It’s like the author got tired of writing this series and decided to just get it over with. Yes, it has plenty of action and adventure like the previous books, but what kind pf ending was this? It felt so cold, so factual, with minimum emotion or caring. One of the worts endings I have read in a long time. So disappointing
What just happened... I read all of these books and couldn't wait to have all of the answers and build up resolved. Why? Why even bother writing this? You build this amazing world, characters that we are invested in, just to get tired of it and rush a sloppy finish. The epilogue was a joke. I don't know that I've ever completed a series that left me feeling this disappointed. What an absolutele waste of time. Even series that I've just grown bored with haven't stabbed me the way this one did. I don't believe I'll be picking up anymore of her books. I could handle the EPIC crap show ending had she added that more was to come. But, no. No explanation. No "thank you for reading". What a slap in the face. If you loved the series this far, skip this atrocity or it will ruin it all.
The end of this book is the equivalent of "and then they all woke up and it had just been a dream...". Eight books I read to get this point. Eight books worth of investment into these characters and they're plight off a world in darkness. The quest to bring the sun back. And it went off like the saddest little party balloon. "Oh look, the sun's back, anyhow, as I was saying.."
Not to mention Aster's love interest for her whole series was TERRIBLE. She sees him barely a couple of times and they're in love? And then she doesn't get her HEA but the other two do?
Did the author hand this over to her kids to finish?
If you haven't finished the series yet, it's probably better that you don't. You'll imagine a much better ending than those of us who did had to read.
i wanted to dnf this trilogy from book one. spite was the only thing that kept me going bc i owed it to myself to find out how london, britt & aster’s prophecy plays out after investing my time into reading all these books. well, spoiler alert: it is boring and predictable at best lol
the stakes were on the floor and the entire relationship between aster and dornan felt forced. i just couldn’t connect to the mc and skimmed the whole thing tbh. btw all of their references to current pop culture were so ??? maybe i skipped a few too many pages but how would they know some of these references?? (i’d look for an example but i honestly can’t be bothered to read through this thing again)
I am so disappointed in the direction this book took with such promising characters from “The Tower” and “The Restoration.” It relegated the most interesting ones — London, Callan, the Knights of Boudica — to minor or even almost nonexistent roles in a story that was painful to get through. It took me a week to finish this book when I had read most of the others in just a day, three max (because I had to work, sleep and eat at some points).
Eight books in and it’s as if the author decided to just slap 12 ridiculously repetitive fight scenes on the page and call it a day for No. 9. Nothing about the 12 gates was interesting. The deaths of Max and Doran were unnecessary and even boring. If you’re going to kill off not one, but two characters central to the main character’s storyline, make it memorable and/or meaningful!
I have so much more to complain about, but I feel like I wasted enough time reading the book. It was a complete letdown.

This is an extraordinary epic urban fantasy series. A spectacular cast of characters and a unique and entertaining storyline. This is the final book in this three-part series of books about an apocalyptic event when super volcanoes erupted in shroud of the world and darkness. After that apocalyptic event Creatures of the night and many mythical creatures came out of the darkness in the earth to once again roam the world. Mini humans died off as the world no longer support its population. Vampires became the ruling party in the long with which is creating magic to help grow food And have some civilization left. All the supernaturals lived in different cities that were left around the world. Vampire kings ruled their areas in magic was restricted to only approved witches and wizards doing the good of the kings. There is a prophecy that three witches will one day bring back the sun. Read on this final book and see if they succeed. Extraordinary entertaining and a fun read. Check it out.
The conclusion of this series (and also the other two connected to this one) was just, not good. It felt rushed and nothing gets resolved.
I liked Aster, but I did not like any of the other characters. They where juvenile and did not feel developed enough. The few with actual potential, like Scarlet and Doran, did not get any time or focus in the story. This surprised me a lot since they where supposed to be the best friend and the love interest. Aster is a kick-ass character, how can the main time and focus for other characters in the story go to Bonnie!? She did nothing for the story overall but got lots of story time. This book did not do Aster justice.
I read all three books. I have to say I was disappointed in the ending of this book. To me it didn't finish the story. Was the sun to show up every day? What did she do after her bunch left and joined the ghost pack? Sense Tyson got another chance and the other two didn't die by demon do they get a second chance? This is the last book of this series so I have to say I'm disappointed.
Compared to the ends of the last two heroine's stories, this one ends with no HEA for Aster. The other women have all their friends survive and their vamp partners. So the long journey ends in the ultimate expected outcome, but sort of leaves everything flat. What happened to the vampire lovers? What is the new world like? Does Aster get to see Max and Doran? Not a feel good ending.
There were too many unanswered questions left ....what happened with the vampires or if they survive. What happened with Callahan and Alex... I have read almost every book this author has published in the last several years, but it is far too disappointing to end the series in this way. I never left a disappointing comment...it was like she was bored with writing the series and poof to bad 👎 ...

Adventure packed book with lots of unexpected twists and turns, but the ending feels abrupt and doesn’t say what happened to the vampires or how the world progressed. The epilogue feels random and doesn’t add anything. Enjoyable read but not a fan of the incomplete ending.
Disappointed with the ending to what was otherwise a great chaos magic driven series... I feel like this series deserved a final book to pull its threads back together. I always hate when authors kill off great characters for no good reason especially when it was easily possible to bring them back.
I don't know how to rate this story. The series overall deserves a five, but this book is so disappointing that I feel a two is too much.
For me, this series has been the weakest. While it's true that Aster was the heart, the compassion, the goodness of the trio, the ending was absurd. I don't understand why the author decided that she didn't deserve to have her vampire with her, or even Max.
In the other series both London and Britt, fell in love and although their vampires didn't play a big part in the plot, I would say only at the end, they were like the prize after the great struggles and quests to save their worlds.
I respect the author, but I leave disappointed that she didn't give Aster what she gave them all, real love. I get the perception that she got tired of the series and thought, hala, there you go, Aster saved the world and that's it, Aster should be happy to go back to the wild and not lose anyone else?
It also bothers me that during all the 10 books we met special characters, good, bad, funny and we don't know what their end was. Did they survive? Did they get what they deserved according to how they behaved in this life? I wish in the future I would do an extended epilogue for each house to give us an idea of how they did with this new world. Closing the series with a clear idea about the future.
I almost never write negative reviews but I felt so betrayed as a reader (that has read a lot by this author). This might be a spoiler for some but there is no happy ending here. So many answers are left unresolved, many of the events of the challenge that the gang went though were left hanging. It wasn't, as prophesied just the 3 of them, but the three and whoever they fancied bringing along. No special powers needed, in fact they couldn't use them. The challenges themselves got a bit repetitive and even boring at times. I admit to struggling with this last trilogy the most as I felt the least connected to Aster and her band of misfits were definitely not likeable. But to give a HEA to the other two and leave Aster with a 'yep just get on with it, sorry we killed them all off for you' felt like the author had just given up. Also what on earth happens to the world after daylight returns? So many questions, and ultimately it's made me wonder whether to trust this author again.
This review is for the entire Midnight Burns: New Dawn series.
What I Liked: I liked the build-up of the The Wild in contrast to the more dystopian urban settings in the other Midnight Burns series. Aster's gang and Max provide some good comic relief in the midst of their rather desperate surroundings.
What I Didn't Like: The third book was kind of a let down. It was nice to have London and Britt back, but the resolution of everything wasn't entirely satisfying.
Overall: Be aware, this series is NOT a romance; it's urban fantasy. There isn't a guaranteed HEA. It was my least favorite of the three series that take place in this world, but I felt obligated to finish it after having read the other two series. It wasn't terrible, but the ending left me a little upset which is definitely influencing my rating.
I loved every book in the 3 part multi book series. The characters were crafted well, the plots moved and had great intertwining participants and sub plots. Somehow though, this book feels like the culmination of lots of research on old religions and myths. Too much happens at such an endless rate that a reader will suffer battle fatigue. The fighting is interspersed with the MOST juvenile moments and banter that I started to wonder if this book was written by someone different than all of the previous ones. Almost all of the dialogue was painful to read. It truly feels like A. Chase got sick of her own story and puked out this slop, tagged an unsatisfying ending on it and called it good. I doubt an editor even got to read this because nobody should have let this stand as the death knell for what was an outstanding series.
Aster's story already seemed less thought-out than London and Britt's. As the final part of the triangle, she was less developed and had less of a connection to the battle to return the sun. I liked her connection to the other two but it was so brief that it didn't ring true. The amount of loss that Aster experienced for seemingly no reason also annoyed me. It seems extra terrible that she alone of the three had to pay such a terrible price to realize a goal that she didn't even have a book ago. Poor storytelling and I'm sorry I spent the last day reading this ultimately unsatisfying series.
At the end of the previous book, Aster was captured by the Master Inquisitor and taken to the palace of the vampire House Nilson. But the 2d generation of royals have another idea. Since this is the final book in the Midnight Empire series, Britt and London join us on a journey to change the world.
I love books that have levels, steps, puzzles, or tests to solve. Although this one, I didn’t see much difference between the challenges of the different gates.
Ending: sad, disappointing, and unfulfilled. I want a next book!!!
Fave scenes: Aster warning Doran, Liam & the bone, Aster’s grandmother, and running for Mandjet.
Midnight Burns is the cornerstone book that ties up Annabel Chase's triumphant, triangular Midnight Empire trio! London was the first vertex to take shape in The Tower, and then Britt the Bloody triumphed in The Restoration, adding another hard angel, until finally, Aster the Hooded One creates light in New Dawn by connecting the last link in the Prophesy. These three women have always been destined to meet, and Midnight Burns is where the trifecta shines brightest!
If you want to read a book with a sad unhappy ending this is the one for you. I will no longer read this author as I’m afraid she’ll get me invested in the main characters and do this again. I wouldn’t mind if there was another book after this that would give a HEA (Happily Ever After) but there isn’t. It’s a good book for those content with stories that end sadly. It felt like a betrayal from the author. If you enjoyed the first two books in this series skip this one and imagine your own HEA.

OMG what an atrocious, sucky ending.....the first two series are good but starting with the robin hood poop 3rd series it all goes downhill.
Also this poorly done and shitty, rushed ending....It's right up their with stupid series endings along the lines (this isn't what happen btw I just feel this ending is just as bad) of "and we travel back in time changed this one thing so everything in the whole series never happened" type ending where they invalidate everything that happened before.
I know annabel chase is one of my favorite authors but I still somehow forget just how much I love her books every time. It's like I remember I love her books but each time I read a new one I'm reminded of just how much I love them. This one was no different in that regard. Loved seeing the conclusion and seeing the interaction of the characters from the prior series.
