The Kelly family escaped a life of poverty and starvation by leaving Ireland, coming to the United States. They now live in New York, but they are still poor and starving, working in sweat shop factories. Maeve Kelly is determined to help her family - mother, father and grandfather who was injured in a factory, having a broken arm and leg. He needs care, and Maeve has been taking care of him since his injuries. She decides to write a mail order bride ad and see if anyone will be willing to not only marry her, but also bring her whole family along as well. Frank Connors lives in Oregon and is a foreman at the local lumber mill. His only family now is his sister Helen, who he lives with. He would really like to get married and start a family, and when he sees Maeve's ad, he answers it. They get to know each other through their letters, and eventually she agrees to go to him, on the condition that he will get her whole family to come as well, as soon as they are certain they want to be married. Frank is good with that and looks forward to it very much. There are very difficult situations with the mill, and in fact the whole town, which is completely controlled by the mill. I love the characters in this book, and this was a quick read because of the good storytelling.

What would you do if you saw injustice?
This book was different and very good with characters that I found to be outstanding. Maeve is a heroine whose life has not been easy. Frank is just a lonely man who agrees to enter into a marriage of convince with a mail order bride. Neither really expected for love to grow and neither did they expect events would happen that could kill that love. There is not just Maeve and Frank story but the whole cast of characters too. I loved the drama of piece.

Unrealistic expectations

Frustrating read. Unrealistic heroine expects mail order man to pay her way, support her and family then at the same time denying him the right to marry him while demanding he he leave his home and job that helped him pay for her family and find a new home and job, then he gets to hold her hand at last. Not even, especially Christians can't wait to marry and multiply! Lol

A long journey to reach home

I liked that Maeve continued to strive for a better situation not just for herself but for her family and friends and others struggling within an unfair system.
