Now an Earl and thrust into the middle of kingdom politics, Nate must support his king while avoiding assassins and winning the tournament that will vindicate all his hard work. At the same time, he will need to solve the mystery of how he was brought to Greymantle and find a way to stop the Blood God's attacks once and for all.

Set in Greymantle, a unique world of swords and magic that is medieval in flavor but seen through the lens of a modern college student from Earth, the Greymantle Chronicles are an epic fantasy series on a high magic fantasy world where technology and science never existed. Yet, cities are cleaner, banking is done with magic tokens, floating carts are used to haul freight, and magic is a science in its own right.

BADASS!

Okay... this was everything! I couldn't put it down but I was forced to 'cause I fell asleep haha. I finished it this morning and have not stopped thinking about it. I love this world and DRAGONS! The truth about how and why Nate came into this world was the biggest surprise to me but it was a good one. I love that Baxter is adding more to the world of Greymantle and we get to see what Els gets up to as well.

A let down over the earlier novels

This novel had several inconsistencies that led me to lower the rating over the previous novels in the series. A couple of examples (without giving away too much information):

* A sword tournament is mentioned as a high priority, but three months before the tournament The protagonist and his team spends a month without training, while simultaneously complaining about their lack of preparation.
* During the tournament, someone cheats and removes the enchantment that stops their weapon from hurting the protagonist. But, in spite of the attempted murder, the protagonist does not mention the cheat to the judges.

Another great addition

This series gets better with each book. It's time for an audible. I enjoyed the MC's path to power. Happy he finally has a reason to be more greedy. His frugality baffled me, just didn't make sense. Would love to see a tamed creature in book 6. Looking forward to the base building to come.

Great Story

Each book in the series is faster paced than the previous one. This book is exciting and well plotted.

There are some minor editing issues - but I am more than happy to trade those for fast publication. They do not spoil my enjoyment of a very well crafted story.

I enjoyed this book

Most of the time I don't like books that have time travel in them but the author pulled it off in this series. I enjoyed all five books in this series. Give the first book a try and see if you like it.

Entertaining Saga

Nate gains power and finds the answers to why he came to be on Greymantle. Danger, battles with false gods, evolvement, and friendship ensue. I like the action, humor, intrigue, and romance. This has been one of my favorite series.

meh

Still a somewhat entertaining read. Unfortunately, the author still insists on having the characters act in ways that simply aren’t believable.

I just began reading this and it is off to a bad start.

1. The M.C. kills trolls, finds treasure in their cave and then immediately starts giving the treasure away or trying to, at least.

2. The M.C. is deeded property and belongings from one of his defeated enemies. He whines and complains about how much he is given. Then he starts trying to give much of it away.

What the heck is wrong with this guy?! Are we sure that this guy was a business major in college? Was the protagonist dropped on his head as a child? Why the heck is he allergic to wealth? It sounds danged un-American to me! Heh!

Dudley DoRight the Uber-BoyScout strikes again!
With each page, I am losing more and more respect for the character.

I will keep trying to finish reading this work, for now.

ADDENDUM:
Ok, I am now 43% through the book and it just got much worse. Now Dudley DoRight has decided he must save downtrodden native dragon people from oppression. Oy Vey! From obscene levels of idiotic altruism to becoming a Western style "Save the World" social worker. Not good! Next the M.C. will be doing missionary work. For this, I am taking a star off of my original review.

POST-ADDENDUM:
I almost made it to the end of this book before the sappy content tried to send me into hyperglycemic shock. I can only handle so much wholesome, sugary, sappy content ("What's that Lassie? Timmy is stuck in the well? Good girl, Lassie!"), before I go into a coma.

The "Hero" wants to spend his time wandering the world vanquishing evil and cooking good ole' Southern Cuisine for the masses, maybe right after he visits Disney World. Someone, please shoot me now!?

An entertaining but rushed conclusion to the arc.

I spent an hour writing and deleting my reveiw. I have not reviewed the previous four books, but with this fifth and final book of Nate's Arc, i'm kind of disappointed with something I did enjoy. The author had some great world building, created some interesting characters, and had a decent plot. I feel that if the author was able to take more time and flush out each of the books this would be right up there with selfpubishing authors like Will Wight.

That said, especially with the fourth and fifth books, it is clear the author was rushing through to get to the end of a story that was set up to be much longer. This last book of Nate's Arc shoved what would have been three seperate books into a worldwind story. There is a quastionable political plot that leads into an treasure seeking story angle, a tournment story that was promises but blazed through like and after through, then the big reveavl of the over arching mystery and random power up story that leads to Meh.

That said, I paid for both audible and evaporate versions of the story. I'm interested enough cheak in on the next "Greymantle Arc" but it will likly be a kindle unlimite peek.

Okay, I didn't guess what would but only because it was insane. Unfortunately, you cannot understand the MC any more and he can only be badly written as there is no way the author can understand the learnings of lives over 10.000 years and being a mix of two immortal races and get them out on the pages in any believable way. And as a reader you lose the feeling and indentabilty of the character. Sadly, this makes the series dead to me.

If you like an extreme power fantasy this might be good for you. It's well written and easy to read.

Too much change

I liked the first four books. A believable, if a little OP story line, but this one really takes the power gaining cake. Without giving spoilers, I feel like the literal explosion in power was too much. It changed everything. Even more than the events of book two. It’s just too OP in my mind. I think I’ll treat this as a five book series and find a new series with a progression of power that’s a bit more linear and not exponential.

Dragonlord by j. David baxter. Seriously when I thought this series couldn't get any better. The author outdoes himself and this series is fast becoming one of my favourites. Also the world building and character development are so well detailed that it's as if these are memoirs not made up fiction.

While I was happy with Book 4s wrap up I think this book is a solid ending to the entire story line, and I assume that was the goal.
We meet more of the alluded to races, explore the remnants of Nate's journey, and finally get that tournament... but would the Bleeders allow peace? Nooooope.

Enjoyable and an easy listen on audiobook.
My copy did have some editing errors though😅

Dragonlord: Greymantle book5

A very good read. As with the other four books it was fast pace with lots of charter growth. Even if he was a Boy Scout it was a good series ending.
