Weston Baine has your typical broody, tortured artist’s vibe going on. He doesn’t do relationships and his only priority is winning the Dorian University’s new photography program finals. After receiving some harsh criticism from his professor and mentor, he’s advised to experience more from life and find a muse. Weston is about to give up hope on his dream. That is until his little sister’s college roommate walks into his life. Leanne Brooks is a shy blue-eyed bombshell from a small town in Tennessee. Now that she’s away from home and her sheltered upbringing, her only goal is to enjoy life to its fullest. And Weston is determined to be her guide. It seems like the perfect pair, but everything seems perfect when you’re only looking through the camera’s lens.
"Hope, the feeling that accompanies love. Something you can’t help but have when you claim to love something or someone."
This was a lovely book. It had the intense first love perspective in a college setting. First love that is exciting but hurts the most. I enjoyed reading it.
It’s such a pretty cover, I’m not sure how I ended up with it, maybe a kindle freebie. It started off really rough, the writing really wasn’t flowing and there was a lot of “telling” like I did this, i went there, i said that, I looked here…. And it was difficult I was gonna quit but decided to give it my obligatory 100 pages so I can say that I gave it a real chance. And somewhere at 1/4 it did get better, the characters are sweet and the story is easy and cliche bit also sweet. The writing did get better still choppy from time to time. The sex scenes were actually pretty decent and it’s hard to do well truly. And it ended up an ok read overall…
Teach Me follows Leanne and Weston as they navigate through college and the highs and lows of first love.
This book was emotional and lovely! It felt real and raw, showcasing a relationship that was realistic and had its little flaws. First love is exhilarating and emotional and stressful and Meagan managed to capture it perfectly. While this wasn't a book that I enjoyed immensely, it was still a great book and it ended beautifully!
This was a beautiful story. Two college students, both with baggage and horrible parents. Leanne is from a very strict Christian family but is breaking free of her life by attending college under the rules that she maintains good grades. She meets Wes, an aspiring photographer who needs “life” in his photos. She becomes his muse and they are drawn to one another. Wes doesn’t believe in love due to a terrible example set by his parents, while Leanne has an overbearing religious father to content with. I loved the “teach me” aspect of the story. Leanne didn’t get a lot of experiences growing up, and she asks Wes to teach her. It’s absolutely adorable and by the last “teach me” I shed a tear.
The issues I found with the book, and this could be a formatting error, was that in some chapters, time would go by in between scenes but there was no break at the end of a scene and the start of a new one. Also, their was a few minor issues with the writing, a time frame issue that I couldn’t figure out and the mention of a poem at the end of the story that I don’t recall reading anywhere.
Otherwise I found this story to be so beautiful and I can’t wait to read more.
Wow! I could not put this down! I devoured it in an afternoon and loved it. Wes & Lee’s love story was so sweet! Wes & Lee are first time relationship—ers and have some heavy family baggage that causes them to be unsure about a relationship with each other. However, they get the hang of it and have amazing chemistry and communication. There were a few areas where family members or miscommunication could’ve destroyed them and that didn’t happen. The love issue that had at the end of the book was resolved quickly without a mess of drama and I was really happy for them. Even though Leanne had a bad home life I was so happy to see her move forward with the things she wanted out of life and not doing what others expected of her. Wes & Lee we’re absolutely adorable, this was DUAL POV and moved really quickly, there wasn’t added fluff or too many details it was just right.
“Certainty and security are just pretty ideas that hide scary truths, just like love.” Let me preface this by saying, I usually read the darkest of the dark, but I'm well-rounded and this looked like an adorable book. A palate cleanser, if you will. And I was right. It's adorable, it's sweet, and the characters were lovely.
This was a cute, heart-warming type of book. The characters are in college; you get to meet Leanne with her roommates and Wes with his roommates. I believe a few other books already exist with the roommates.
Characters: Leanne is your classic good girl, innocent college student with an overbearing, religious father. She eats ice cream cones, smiles at the mundane, and spends hours in the library. Wes is what one might consider broody and he's cynical about relationships. Putting a label on things? Not a chance. They had some good development and you get to see Leanne grow into herself. She develops more of a backbone and becomes confident about who she is, which allows her to eventually stand up to her father and become her own person. I understood Wes' side to a degree, but the level of denial about love got to be a bit much for his specific circumstances. He saw his parents struggle with their relationship his whole life, but they were great parents individually and he grew up with love in his life; he just didn't recognize it for what it was. A couple times, I thought, "first world problems," but I can also recognize that this isn't meant to be dark or showcase seriously traumatizing childhoods or anything, so I accepted it. I just think he was a bit harsh with his judgment about them and didn't try to understand them. We did get to see them connect and it's implied that they are working on their own issues as well.
Plot: It progressed nicely without it dragging in spots for too long. It did move quickly and I actually appreciated that they didn't stay in one place throughout the book. They took a trip, went to a carnival, and did some other things. I thought the way it moved through this without lingering for too long was executed well while adding important bits to the story. Could it have been drawn out a little more? Sure, and it may have added to the characters' depth, but it wasn't necessary either. It was predictable, but still made you interested to see how exactly it would play out. One part I was questioning a little was Leanne's mom standing up to the dad as quickly and fiercely as she did. It felt unrealistic for someone that was under his thumb for so long, coming from someone with experience in controlling relationships. I'm glad she did it, but that bit did have me scratching my head for a minute with the way it was executed.
Spice: It was cute and lovely. There were moments where Wes took on a much sexier side, which was nice to see. There wasn't any crazy stuff happening in the bedroom, which was perfect for this book. That's not to say it wasn't hot, because it was. Telling a woman to "give him one more" is always a welcome addition and I loved that. Since Leanne was inexperienced, he walked her through how to do everything and it was a more realistic portrayal of learning about sex than some books have.
The writing was good in this, albeit young, if that makes sense. This is an author that I feel will grow as she writes more books. Were there some technical writing aspects that can be improved upon? Yes. We all start there and I'm interested to read more in the future when I'm in the mood for something lighter. I'll definitely check more of her books out as they release and I think she should keep going, keep learning, and improving.
Tropes: Virgin Grumpy/Sunshine Best Friends Brother
Dual POV
"Hope is everything when you expect nothing."
First, can we take a minute to talk about how gorgeous the cover is? I am obsessed with it!
Second, this book was really good. Leanne has lived a sheltered life with a very strict Father, and a Mother that follows his lead. But they allowed her to go to college, and she becomes roommates with Aubree and Cassidy. Aubree has a brother Wes that is 2 years older than her and goes to the same college. Wes' parents always fought when he was growing up, and his Mother had an issue with pills.
When the three girls start hanging out with Wes and his 2 roommates, Leanne and Wes grow close, but Wes warns her, he's not boyfriend material, and that he does not love anyone. Ever.
I loved how the characters had a lot of growth in this one. Even some of the side characters.
The one thing I didn't like, was the fact that there were a couple of times when it was another day, or a few days later, and there was no break in the chapters. It was kind of hard to keep up with what day it was in the book. But other than that, I really liked this one.
Thank you to The Smuthood and Meagan C. Matthew, for providing me with this E-Arc in exchange for an honest review.
Teach Me is everything I didn't know I needed. It's so raw and emotional, and I couldn't look away. I had to keep reading to see where things would go between Wes and Leanne.
This is a story of two beautifully broken people finding the one person whose broken pieces match their own. Of two guarded people understanding what it's like to love someone for the first time when you didn't think you were capable of it. Of two flawed people who became everything to each other without even trying.
I left my heart with this one. Parts of it took my breath away, and I'll always look back at this book as the first to touch a place inside me that hasn't been reached before. Meagan really knows how to build gritty, real characters, and how to wrap her readers around her fingers. She's found a fan for life because if this is how she writes, I definitely need more.
The only thing stopping me from a 5 is the situation with Leanne's dad. I thought it got resolved a little too conveniently, and I wanted to see that play out a bit more. Other than that, hat's off to you, Meagan, for an amazing story!
This book was absolutely adorable. We have Weston who doesn’t feel like he’s capable of emotions. He’s a introvert with a super small circle and does get out much. He’s extremely passionate about photography but his professor tells him he’s missing the emotion - until he finds his muse.
Leanne is innocent and finally getting a chance to live life out of the shadow of her parents. They’ve controlled everything and still do and now while at college she wants a chance to live and try new things. She just so happens to be Weston’s sister, Aubree, roommate and has a magnetic night out when she meets him. They instantly connect and bring something out of each other than neither expected.
Their story is one of experiences and growth. They constantly put a smile on my face joining their journey of discovering this new life through each other. Their titled perfectly, Teach Me, wraps them up so well and couldn’t fit them better. They both teach each other about life and eventually love.
The side characters have great connection into the story where your wondering and hoping for who’s going to get their story next. I can’t wait to see more from them.
Leanne won my Heart in this sweet story where she and Wes meet in a very unusual circumstance and leave an impression on each other, a pull that they can’t ignore. The feelings grew without labeling what they are to each other, it’s such a comforting story with a sad background. I felt sad when they felt sad and I laughed when something good happened.
I am happy with how Leanne’s character grew throughout the story, how well she overcame her insecurities and become a confident woman who can stand up for herself and that’s where I applaud. With Wes, I was pissed at many times but I realize where it was coming from. The gestures he did unknowingly were so sweet and lovable, they can swoon any girl.
“Teach Me” title has a very dear meaning in the book.
The writing is sweet and simple and the story is fast-paced. I missed the epilogue, I wanted one to be there but unfortunately, it’s not. The formatting of the book could have been better, in many places, I was not able to differentiate that the scene has ended and a new thing started, and have to read 2-3 times to realize that they have moved forward. Otherwise, it’s a good read and all the other characters are fabulous.
Leanne meets a stranger one evening outside the library and she offers him her binder to protect his photographs from the rain.
Fast forward to the present she goes out with her roomies Aubree and Cassie to only be reunited with the mystery guy who turns out to be Aubree’s older brother Wes.
Wes is a photographer and is struggling to enter a piece into a program- turns out all he was missing was Leanne, his new muse. To get right to the point Wes does not believe that he can love another person due to a bad home environment he witnessed between his parents, but Leanne shows him that he is capable of this.
This is a sweet book and honestly I was swooning whenever Wes called Leanne by her nickname Hope- I mean the guy didn’t believe in love but he named his Gallery after her😩
I look forward to reading about the other couples in this series. Thank you to the author/smuthood for providing this book for my honest review.
There is a lot to say about this book. Weston is a photographer and loves to take photos of objects. His professor told him to take photos of something living to get in to this competition. Weston meets Leanne during a bad rainstorm. And the talk for a bit.
They meet again when they find out westons sister is her roommate. Weston offers to help Leanne with her school work she is failing at.
Leanne’s dad seems to be a hard headed religious person. Leanna never got to experience life and was always made to follow his rules. She never got to become herself in a sense.
I enjoyed watching Weston teach Leanne things and open up. I loved seeing Leanne be there and open up Weston. I truly though the aurthors writing was great for the book. I definitely want to read about aubree 👀 recommend picking this book up💕 #smuthood #teachmedorianu
Leanne escapes Alabama and her over-protective, ultra-religious father for college in California. She is lucky to be matched to room with Aubree and Cassidy, two friends who welcome her into the fold. When she meets Aubree’s brother Wes randomly, she is intrigued by him and gets to know him better when they spend time with Wes and his 2 roommates. Wes knows that someone as dark and negative as him should never to allowed in her orbit. But she slowly breaks down his defenses while also becoming his muse for his photography competition. But will he be able to give her what she deserves?
I really liked this book and all the characters in it. I am looking forward to reading the next one!
Weston & Leanne - two very different people, who provide each other with the opportunity to branch out not only emotionally but also with new things in life.
What made me so happy was watching them fall for each other.. they were each other’s first loves..
“You’re everything.”
and possibly each other’s first heartbreaks..
“We’re not friends! Friends don’t do what we just did.”
By the end of the story Leanne has grown so much and watching her stand up for herself - to her father and also Weston - really rounding things out, even though I do wish the conflicts weren’t resolved so easily!
This book is full of raw emotion I was not expecting in a college romance. Leanne has lived a sheltered life until coming to college and she's ready to experience everything. When she begs Weston to teach her, he reluctantly agree but tells he that he's not boyfriend material. Soon they are so much more than "just friends" but Weston still cannot tell Leanne he loves her and she needs those words. Can Weston show Leanne that he loves her and have her accept it, or does she need to hear I love you to believe it?
I enjoyed these characters and all of the side characters as well. I did feel like the ending was a little abrupt, given that nothing was really resolved and then suddenly it was. However, it was worth waiting for the ending though, to get the happily ever after.
•roommates brother •grumpy/sunshine •found family •he doesn’t “feel”
Weston’s hasn’t grown up with the best examples of love & while Leanna hasn’t either, she hasn’t been able to experience anything from her sheltered upbringing. So what does this equation come out to? Non-commitment & teaching each other things.
The emotions I got from this book were perfect! It was a quick read, definitely a page turned, but still slow paced to enjoy everything & the make up at the end was emotionally anxiety inducing as I like it!
I enjoyed the storyline to this book and Wes and Leanne's characters. Their character developments were really well executed and I honestly relate to Wes and his mental battle so it was nice to see a character in the book think the same way I do about something. The side characters in this book were so fun and I hope they get their own books! I'm not sure if it was a formatting issue with the document and my kindle but some of the scene changes were very abrupt and it felt like the time jumps were just awkward.
tropes: - college romance - grumpy x sunshine - best friend's brother - roommate's brother - found family
This was such a cute story. Wes and Leanne both have not the greatest home lives for different reasons and make them flawed in their own ways. As they hang out more, they each learn from each other, Leanne the experiences she didn’t have growing up and she becomes Wes’s muse for his art. I loved reading their relationship develop from not relationship material to the end, It was so cute and touching and emotional. The characters and the world building is phenomenal and made it that much more enjoyable to read.
Grumpy/Sunshine…Sister’s roommate…Found Family…College Romance and so much more! Weston and Leanne were a perfect match made. Weston is a photographer looking for his muse which he finds in Leanne. Leanne is looking for a life she dreams of and with Weston’s help she is able to enjoy each given moment.
These two bring out the best in each other and give the other what they have longed for most…love and light. You cannot help but fall in love with these characters and the joy that love brings to those around you. Looking forward to reading more from this series!!
It is an interesting book, the characters are unique. Leanne and Weston have quite a different relationship in terms of no labels. I liked the description of how Weston captures his muse and how the photos were taken, the details that can be seen from the pictures were described so beautifully. The story is good and the additional characters are also very nice. Their parents are questionable as it was complicated from both sides. I do think there were some parts that just went a bit to fast for me but other than that it was a nice read.
What I’m Starry-Eyed Over: 🤩 The perfect discrete cover. 🤩 The two friend groups/trios. 🤩 Meet-cute/re-meet-cute. 🤩 Cabin & skiing adventure. 🤩 The whole ice skating photography scene. 🤩 Every time the title comes into play!!! 🤩 Binge-worthy: such an interesting college-age plot & all the right feels at the right times.
What I’m Wishing/Dizzy About: 💫 A few weird transitions during the book where I was confused on the timing or scene change. Readers gotta binge!
One dark evening Sunshine met Grumpy while rain hammered around them. They started what would be the first of many storms they would battle together.
Has to be one of my favourite tropes, gives you a little of everything with Weston's grumpy exterior with his massive and loyal heart for those close to him, then you have Leanne and her overly positive outlook on life but inside doubt rises its head with every decision she makes.
This book follows Leanne and Weston. The two are pretty well opposite of each other and both begin helping each other in different ways. Leanne grew up in a Christian household and didn’t have many experiences growing up and Weston helps her live a little. Weston who had been struggling with inspiration for his photography competition finds his ‘muse’ in Leanne.
This was a super sweet, emotional story and I loved the side characters as well!
The story starts off with rain, how romantic, and a chance meeting between Leanne and Wes. The conversation ends abruptly and you would think that it was just a casual stuck in the rain conversation but it actually stuck with Wes for a while and prompted him to submit a picture into the artist program. Since Leanne hasn't had a lot of worldly experiences she asks Wes to teach her. This story is so cute and was a great read! Thanks to the Smuthood for letting me read early!
Neither Leanne nor Wes come from a happy home, both broken in one way or another. Brought together at college through her roommate who is his sister, they grow close, easing each other’s hurts and despite believing it impossible they fall in love. Emotional, full of personal growth, discovery, sweetness and love with a beautiful HEA. Looking forward to more in this new series.
I received an ARC from Wordsmith Publicity and this is my honest review.
𝐀𝐑𝐂 𝐑𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐞𝐰 Teach me Dorian University #1 By Meagan C. Matthew Rating: ⭐ 5/5 Emotions: ❤️ 5/5
Leanne comes from a strict Christian family and is a young girl with no experience in most things in life. That is one of the reasons she attends Dorian U, because it is far away from home. Wes wants to become a famous photographer, but his photos are lacking “life”. This is his only passion because he doesn’t believe in love. Are his examples as in his parents not good ones. Leanne and Wes meet each other at a bar when he and his friends spend an evening there and Leanne is with his little sister there, since she is her roommate. They are drawn to one another. And while Leanne asks Wes to teach her some things in life because of her growing up and lacking in a lot of things, Wes learns a few things himself.
I enjoyed this book. I loved the concept of the teach me that Leanne goes through. She did have a lot of experiences growing up because her dad's was extremely controlling and did not allow her to do things most kids and teenagers do. It was a pretty good book.
I enjoyed this book. It was raw, emotional, and a fairly quick read. These characters came from broken homes and they’re flawed, but they came together to learn and heal from one another. I loved the way their relationship developed and their was a well-written book.
What to Expect: 🌻 Grumpy/Sunshine 🌻 Best friend’s brother 🌻 Found Family 🌻 Virgin 🌻 College Romance
