This volume was everything I was hoping for and more!!
I really knew everything would be okay after the last volume, but HOW this volume unfolded was so much more than I was anticipating! Granted, that doesn't mean there wasn't some heartbreak, but I was SO glad communication was a thing (and that Doigaki stepped in and said something) because that ending was totally swoonworthy!!
I truly love the progression of Sana and Senpai's relationship and how honestly both of them were thinking the same thing about the other in terms of "using" each other, because neither wanted to be apart from the other. Considering how hard it is to know what Senpai is thinking, I don't think I realized as a reader how much he has cared for Sana, even though I feel it has come out in small ways thus far. I'm glad he made his feelings known in a way where there was no confusion, and that Sana knows exactly how he feels! <3
I'm SO excited for the next volume and honestly wish these volumes were released quicker because I always have such a good time! Granted, today I feel super happy from the latest developments, and I can imagine I'll feel that way next volume too!
After my general ho-hum with this series’ previous volume, I have to admit that this instalment did something I didn’t think was possible - it surprised me. It takes too long getting there, but I ended up a lot happier with where this is going than I was before.
Despite all that potential rival stuff, we veer away from all those complications to deal with the complications of a nitwit and the girl who loves him. It’s a little more complicated than that, but that’s the basis for what’s to come.
Here’s my thing - I like the rom more than the com almost every time. Mainly because my own tastes for comedy can be very particular, not because things aren’t funny (even if I don’t personally find them especially amusing).
Thus, when this pivots to being a romance after all those antics, imagine my surprise when it turns out to do this shockingly well. I wouldn’t go as far as to call it great, but the ensuing messy developments fare far better than anything before them.
Sana decides to be honest after some obvious hinting and a near-date and Kanato being very mixed with his messaging. She even admits that she likes him because of more than his looks (it’s right in the title!).
Then, Kanato’s response lands as poorly as any dumb boy’s response has ever landed.
Doigaki turns out to be a spectacularly good wingman rather than a rival and he might not be perfect, but he adds a bit more to the story this way. The mangaka is clearly having a good time framing the two boys and their chat when they meet up later, which made me laugh.
Sana comes to a heck of a conclusion regarding Kanato’s response, even though she had it right the first time, showing that sometimes miscommunication might be better than zero communication. The emotion at the end of that chapter is solid and I genuinely felt for her.
The payoff for all this is really good; I enjoyed the subsequent confession rather a lot and it smartly takes advantage of the series’ primary conceit. Besides, why are you even writing manga if you can’t have it rain at the most opportune time possible anyway? And it’s cute, to boot.
With only a few pages left, the flirtations begin in earnest and, my lord, they’re better than anything the story has done before this point. These two at Sana’s house is like gasoline on a fire and it’s not wrong to say that this sparks more in twenty pages than it has in the previous three volumes and change.
And there are more volumes! Last time I would not have cared much about that, but now? Heck yeah, give me a dating arc! Turns out this story hadn’t actually gotten to the good bits and I’m glad I gave it this last chance.
Plus, while we’re on the subject of gags, Sena’s brother thinking they’re suddenly high class due to a detergent incident is gloriously amusing to me.
3.5 stars - it suddenly got real good, but only right towards the end, yet I’m still so close to rounding this up. If it maintains this newfound strength going forward, my outlook on the next volume is going to be way different in a good way.
Doigaki is more handsome and I also prefer him because of his personality. The classic cliché of romantic lyrics prevail. I appreciate that Sana has come out openly, but as usual with an abundance of paturnias. The scene in the bathroom is enticing. A very enjoyable and smooth reading.
High 4 stars. I really enjoyed this volume with regard to the development. This is pretty straightforward, but I'm enjoying the ride. It hits for me, and I love the art.
