Inevitable love. Broken rules. Simmering secrets. Brim of insanity.
Chris has been in love with Giselle his entire life. Afraid of ruining their friendship, he's kept his feelings a secret for eighteen years only to lose her to Xavier.
Xavier calls himself the man wearing a black cape who has a past and a present so scary, it can only end in bloodshed. The only light in his life is his savior, Giselle.
Giselle visits Petrichor on her mother's second death anniversary, unaware that this trip will turn everything upside down from her relationships to the course of her life.
This reminds me of the Wattpad books I used to read in High School. The writing could use a little more polished, but the plot was interesting. Please check for TWs before diving in.
What if the love of your life was your best friend…
It took Giselle a minute to get there, but Chris knew all along. They were undoubtably meant to be.
Though there were plenty of big bumps in the road to make it to HEA, but they got there none the less.
This friends to lovers romance is for you if… - Slow burn romance - You don’t mind skipping the spice - You enjoy friends to lovers - Trials and struggles - Darker themes mixed in - Multiple POVs - Happily Ever After
This is a sweet book that has the ability to melt your heart. So curl up with a blanket and get to reading!!
This book isn’t for you if you like smut, spice, dark romance, or enemies to lovers. So for me, this was out of my usual zone. But I could still appreciate the love and care that this author put into their story.
There are sweet butterfly moments as well as laugh out loud moments which were my favorites over all. Don’t be afraid to go out of your comfort zone!
Thank you M. Phoenix for trusting me with your ARC baby!! You did an amazing job here and I can’t wait to see what you write next!
I’m being generous by giving it 4* I’d probably give it 3.5*.
I can tell it’s the authors first book but it’s put them in pretty good stead for future ones. The foreshadowing wasn’t really foreshadowing, it was too easy to guess and was exposed too quick there needed to be an element of longing so we have to find out what that connection is to remain engaged. Also why does every character have deceased mother or deceased parents?? Like you’re most likely not going to know that many people in your Close circle who have no parents due to murder/accidents/unexpected death etc, it’s not realistic.
Xavier- A poor poor broken man, one that needs a whole psychiatric team from the moment his parents passed away. He’s a broken manipulative and spineless man. He was an easy character to figure out, wish there was a bit more mystery about him.
Abby- Didn’t like her. She’s entitled, the way she wanted Chris to take all the assets from Abbott’s company even though Chris isn’t entitled to them naturally but through a will. Like you can’t tell him to take all the assets cuz he’s not Abbott’s child, Giselle is and technically she’s entitled to them all (especially if there was no Will but instead she’s entitled to half.) Also how tf were her and Chris dating after 1 date and a month of knowing each other? Makes no sense.
Giselle- I’ll be honest, I didn’t like her. She spotted all of Xavier’s red flags and even stated he was toxic yet she never left and she just waited? Like why did she think that was a good idea, it was only going to get worse. Her dad showed her exactly how she should’ve been treated and so did Chris yet she went for a toxic man who manipulated her and she knew it. Her dismissal of Chris’ feelings is really annoying, she claims she sees every facial expression change and points out his hurt but can never connect the dots like cmon now. She’s just running away from her attraction and want for Chris because she’s manipulated herself into believing Xavier is the one regardless of how he treated her in that week alone. Giselle accusing Chris of being involved with THE ACT was warranted but the fact she just didn’t let him respond at all and obviously flustered him to the point of panic was annoying, you never really truly know who someone is (I get that) but you have to give them a chance to explain too.
Chris- Everyone’s perfect boyfriend, I love him, minus the assault in the latter half of the book… what was that all about? My guy “blacked out” and almost committed 2 murders and made Giselle watch. This man just tortures himself to “see Giselle happy” she was never happy but she never fucking listens. Chris’ banter is amazing though, overall he is probably the only likeable character. I’m confused over Chris’ stammer/stutter and because I don’t think the reason was confirmed (or I missed it) it became annoying to read, I don’t know if he always has one or it’s just when he’s upset/panicked/ flustered, I would like for it to be confirmed if it wasn’t because it’s confusing.
Giselle and Chris are amazing together and their banter is something else. They both just need other friends they have nobody else to run to and that’s no way to live really. There was a fair bit of emotional turmoil in this that’s supposed to evoke a lot of emotions I just found it wasn’t executed too well but good enough for most people. It’s a worthwhile read because it’s not too long but not my favourite I’ve ever read.
An absolutely beautiful book filled with emotions, desire, and longing, but with so much hurt and angst. A very heavy book that does not grace around themes of suicide, mental health and loss, but it is worth all the pain to see such a beautiful ending. Chris and Giselle’s love story is such a beautiful combination of friendship and desire, and I love how much they compliment each other, and how Chris is so patient and caring, but can easily snap once someone hurts HIS Giselle. I must say, I love how the final plot twist was hinted around the middle, but once it all kicked off, it really took me off guard and made me desperate for everything to be fixed. Giselle and Xavier is an amazing representation of how you can’t judge a book by its cover, and with the slow decline of Xavier’s sanity, you can feel all the emotions Giselle is feeling, and it is so brilliant how Phoenix has done this. I love how Chris and Abby’s relationship is a small taste of the hell Giselle and Xavier will go through, and realising the same things were coming out was so scary. Because for Chris and Abby, it wasn’t scary. But for Giselle and Xavier, well… I was terrified for Giselle.
As Giselle’s father says: “The only way to get to the other side is through it.” Thank you M. Phoenix. I will definitely be reading your books that come out in the future. You are such a brilliant author and this is the best book I’ve read in ages. Thank you thank you thank you!
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
this is the definition of “don’t judge a book by it’s cover” - literally haha.
❗️be advised - i read the ARC copy so the finished book might be different from what others have read!
⚠️also please check content warnings as this book contains talk of self harm, sexual assault, violence, mental health struggles, and death.
M. Phoenix was so kind for sending me a pre-published version of this book! i was a little hesitant to read because i’m not a big fan of closed door romance (yes i need the smut lol) but this book surpassed my expectations of a fade-to-black romance by a long shot.
here’s my reviews/thoughts/ramble:
so the book starts out super cute but kinda drives you nuts at the same time. Giselle and Chris are childhood bestfriends and you learn very early on he is absolutely, without a doubt in love with her. you get multiple POV’s (which i loved) - so he admits this to us readers from the start. Chris is so friggin sweet to her it melts my heart. but thing can’t be this simple (obviously) SO you have Chris being hopelessly in love with Giselle, while she is in a committed relationship with different man, Xavier, who is also an ASSASSIN?! wild, i know haha. i’m not usually a fan of love triangles but this was written very well.
i don’t want to give away any spoilers, but this book starts out pretty cute and fluffy but does turn out to be quite dark. so please keep your triggers in mind and check content warnings before you read.
i honestly really enjoyed this book and i’m excited to see what else M. Phoenix publishes in the future, because for a debut novel this was AMAZING.
i recommend reading if you love these tropes: closed door romance/fade to black childhood friends to lovers trauma bonding soulmates slow burn golden retriever hero (but would c*t a b*t*h for his girl) morally grey main characters
I just want to say thanks to the author first for the advanced copy, I went into this book blind and it took me on an emotional rollercoaster. This is a romance book but it does contain a-lot of dark elements so check the tws if you decide to pick this book up but I am very glad that I go to read it it. It is a childhood friends to lovers with a soulmate tripe which I LOVE! and wish there was more of because it makes my heart just turn into a puddle and smile so hard when two people are just meant to be despite the world, the good and bad.
Chris is just the sweetest softest cinnamon roll man that has been in love with his best friend Giselle all his life and has never told her which instantly had me secretly yelling at him to finally tell her but Chris is the softest and the way he loves and cares for Giselle was so sweet to read. Despite the dark elements and a lot of the chaos that ensues, which it did confuse me a little in the beginning which made it a 4.5 for me but you have to keep reading and it’ll all make sense. I’m terrible at guessing things so I knew things would click into place because there is a lot of mystery and suspense surrounding the plot. However, Chris and Giselle deserve the world and I loved that no matter what, they had each other and that type of love is so pure, it is a fantastic read. Let It Fall felt refreshing, original and a suspenseful spin on a childhood friends to lovers romance.
2 cities, 2 men. A best friend who has secretly loved, protected and, comforted her. A new man, with a dark past, elusive, gray, wounded. Giselle is the world for them both. But a tragedy befalls and her world just shatters. And there's more secrets, betrayal and hurt that uncovers from both men.
Yay for my first ARC book. The author reached out to me and ofcourse I'm very honored. I went in blind except for the tiny bits of the author provided. "Not a romcom," she said. And boy, was she right. The prologue already showed me what kind of thing I'm getting into. It's dark and dramatic.
I love Chris and Giselle's relationship- Their friendship and the pure love. There were so many corny jokes between them, it's like the fun things I see in real couples. It's a little cheesy but I think it's a good balance/counter to the dark aspects of this novel. And as for Xavier, I get his thing. He's wounded and when he found a partner that lights up his world, he never wanted to let go. But ofcourse anything excessive is bad. It became an obsession. There's a lot of dramatic and poetic declarations of love. And there's definitely a sloooow burn.
Towards the end of the book, just as I thought it was over... there's more! Just as my heart was settling down, the author riles me up again. The author definitely caught me off guard a couple of times.
Typically I like strong characters and I've been seeing that a lot with recent novels. This book is a good change of pace. It shows a lot of weaknesses in the characters, in us humans.
OVERALL, it's not the kind of book that I would usually pick up. So much angst! But I'm glad I did. It was interesting enough to keep reading and I finished this quite fast.
Congratulations on your debut book, @author_mphoenix . 🎉
Let It Fall is about two childhood best friends, Chris and Giselle. Chris has been in love with her the whole time but has never confessed his feelings. The anniversary of her mothers death is coming up and she travels to the city with her father to visit her mothers grave. While she is there she meets up with her boyfriend who is into very shady things. Chaos issues and Chris is there to pick up the pieces.
I had no idea what to expect going into this book and I had a very fun time. It’s a lot darker than what I expected but it worked for the story. Chris is so sweet and his love for Giselle is so pure. I just wanted him to speak up and tell her how he feels. I’m a sucker for best friends to lovers and this book did not disappoint. They just know each other so well. I loved how no matter what was happening they were able to calm each other down.
*I want to start off by saying that this is NOT a romcom, it’s a dark romance so please read TW before going in*
•childhood friends to lovers •mental health rep •self harm/ suicide •grief •Third POV with different POV’s from other characters •unrequited love
I went into this book and I had no idea what to expect. The way this story was told was very unique and such a different approach than anything I’ve ever read. It was so intense and had me on the edge of my seat as I kept flipping through each chapter to find out what would happen next. It was a really good read, I enjoyed it!
The story follows Chris and Giselle who are childhood friends, and Chris has been in love with Giselle since forever, but she doesn’t know. He’s dodged every girl and only gives his attention to her, that is until Giselle starts dating Xavier, a mysterious man whom she met while she was grieving the loss of her mother. As the story progresses she finds out something important regarding Xavier and finds herself in a difficult situation.
I won’t say anymore because I don’t want to spoil anything, but if you’re looking for a book with twists and turns, lies, loss, the effects of what deteriorating mental health can do and overcoming struggles, then I recommend this book!
I went into this book completely blind which I normally never do, I alway have some knowledge of what will happen. When I tell you my heart was beating out of my chest reading this, I thought it was going to explode. I never expected it to be as dark as it was ( please check trigger warning before reading!) I loved Chris and his pure love for Giselle & was rooting for him from the very beginning as friends to lovers is one of my favourite tropes. The only thing I will say is it felt a bit slow in the beginning but I understand that is to get the backstory of it all, so I would definitely say stick to it as it is a fantastic read and you wouldn’t want to miss out. Overall let it fall is an amazing book and I would definitely recommend.
I received an arc in exchange for my honest review.
great debut novel! the story has an interesting plot and the suspense at the beginning was a great hook. i was drawn to the childhood friends to lovers & slow burn tropes. the book has a lot of angst with dark and twisted elements to it, more so than i expected going in blind. i was a slightly confused with the writing style at first because i’ve never read a book with third person multiple pov. giselle and chris' romance was sweet, though the two were a bit immature for my liking. i enjoyed reading how flawed the characters are. i felt for xavier after getting a glimpse into his traumatic past. i love a slow burn, but i would've liked it more if there was more buildup and tension between the mcs throughout the book. there were so many unexpected twists and turns in this book, so you’re in for a wild ride.
3.5 ⭐️
thank you m. phoneix for the arc in exchange for an honest review.
Firstly this book was never boring, such a page turner, couldn’t put it down. I needed to know what was happening, and soooo much was happening. I absolutely loved Chris and his connection with Giselle and all they have been through together. The epilogue though 🤌🏽
Tropes -Childhood best friends to lovers -Closed-door romance -Morally-Grey MC -Soulmates -Cinnamon roll hero
Make sure to check trigger warnings before reading. This is a romance book with dark themes. It is not a rom-com.
I definitely recommend you pick this one up was such a great read. Releasing November 29th.
3.5⭐️ Let me start by saying that this was a great debut novel. This is a best friends to lovers, closed door romance with dark themes (pls check TWs). The execution of these was impressive. I liked Chris. And the best friends to lovers dynamic between Chris and Giselle. The love he had for her is remarkable. His character represented speech/stammer issue, which was new for me. The plot overall was a little melodramatic but great. I did not expect it to have so many twists😍 the slow burn 🤌🏻🤌🏻🤌🏻 However, there were a few things that bothered me. Firstly, I think Giselle was a bit too immature. She barely grieved her father. She couldn’t decide what she wanted to do. She was in “love” with Xavier but as soon as she got the chance to be with Chris, she took it. I personally think Chris was too good for her (minus the part where he hurt Abby). She was painfully oblivious about Chris’ feelings for her. And I HATED how she instantly accused him for some things he never did and wouldn’t let him explain. And Xavier. His character felt so unnecessary. He was just there for the dark theme. He never really loved Giselle, he was just obsessed. And he justified his actions by constantly repeating he was tricked. 🤡🤡 I couldn’t keep up with him😭 That being said, I would highly recommend reading this book if you enjoy dark romances and don’t mind the absence of smut❤️
I think I left pieces of my heart nearly on every page of this book. What an emotional roller-coaster I was not prepared for. I went into this blind and believe me when I say it's a page turner!
I adored Chris and his love for Giselle. Their personalities around each other was just too cute. I don't want to give away anything so I'll say Let It Fall is a childhood friends to lovers story with a mysterious and suspenseful plot. Trust me when I say ADD TO THE TBR.
- Childhood BF to Lovers - Slow Burn - Soulmates - Cinnamon Roll Hero - Closed Door Romance - Morally Grey MC
This book was incredible. The suspense, it was insane. I was on the edge of my seat while reading. So well written. I adore Chris and Giselle’s love so much. This one is a must read!!
4.5⭐️ This book was so good!!! i got an ARC from the author and wow !!!! i was on the edge with this book, i did not predict what came next in this book and im so happy i didnt. i love the suspense, i loved the romance and just the twist and turns!! we also love to see some Taylor Swift reference in there !! ;) it’s out now please check it out !!!
not what i was expecting but loved it all the same❤️

I’m going to start this off with this is not a romcom, it’s an emotional romance with some dark, mature themes so read TW before!
I’ve never read a book like this so I went into this a bit blind. This story was so different from what I always read and it was such a thrilling, unique story. Reading this story will have you reading each page so quickly because it’s such a page turner, I was on the edge of my seat the entire book.
Giselle and Chris are childhood bestfriends and Chris has loved her for as long as he can remember, although Giselle has no clue about his feelings. Giselle begins dating Xavier, a man she knows little about, whom she met while she was back in her town, Petrichor.
However the story takes a turn and a difficult situation arises. I can’t say much more or else I’ll spoil the story but it’s such an interesting story with a HEA that I definitely recommend.
I loved reading about Chris and Giselle’s friendship turning into a relationship. It wasn’t easy and the situations they went through were heartbreaking but in the end, their love broke free. You really witnessed the love and care they had for each other and it was so so beautiful. They were true soulmates, they belonged with each other 100%.
Thank you M. Phoenix for reaching out and sending me an ARC of your book! I definitely enjoyed reading it!
Thank you to the wonderful, M. Phoenix, for an e-arc of this book ❤️ I am leaving my review voluntarily.
Some notable tropes: Best Friends to Lovers Slow burn Multiple POVs Dark Themes Highly recommend looking up TWs before diving in
“I’d give my soul to bring back the shine that that your eyes once held. I’d sacrifice a thousand lives to see one spark, Elle. I’d spend every waking moment of my life making you smile the way you used to.”
Let It Fall is about best friends Chris and Giselle. Chris has known that he’s been in love with Giselle pretty much all of his life. Giselle needs some help getting there 😝 After visiting her mother’s grave in Petrichor, Giselle learns something about her boyfriend Xavier, and it alters the course of their relationship.
I went into this book completely blind, and was surprised! This book for sure got dark at times, and was a little dramatic. I did think it took a little too long to get to the big reveal… However, this book was sweet, and had the best cinnamon roll hero 🥹 Love the soulmate kind of love, and this unique spin on friends to lovers! Overall, it was a great debut, can’t wait to see where you go next, M. Phoenix!
- Childhood best friends to lovers - Slow burn - Soulmatism - Secret pinning - Closed door romance
I read this book back in early December and it was really cute. It was originally sent to me as an ARC but because of some stuff going on in my life I didn’t get to it before after release day.
This book is a childhood best friends to lovers, slow burn romance but also a closed door romance. I’m not the biggest fan of closed door romances, just because that’s not what I’m used to but it worked pretty well with Let It Fall. Chris and Giselle were just so likeable characters and even though Chris kinda was a morally-grey MC, you could really see the sincerity and sensitivity in him deep down.
It’s for sure a story of soulmates and how you can find our way back to each other. It’s not a second chance romance, big because Chris never really confessed his true feelings for Giselle, he almost lost her to a other guy. It’s quite emotional and I honestly wasn’t expecting that even though I already knew that it was going to be emotional. It just hit me harder than I expected.
Thank you M. Phoenix for sending me a copy of your book. I really enjoyed it!
[ thank the author so much for providing me an arc ]
let it fall is about two childhood best friends and their journey to finding their happily ever after, while being involved in a pretty twisted situation. heavy topics such as mental health, loss, grief and revenge were covered in let it fall, and i must say, it was an amazing plot.
while let it fall is an amazing book, there were certain things i did not like myself too, and i guess i should mention those too.
firstly, the cliché wattpad lines that would occasionally show up. i'm not a fan of that, but it's understandable considering the author had the first draft published on wattpad. there's nothing wrong with cliché lines, it just isn't my cup of tea.
second thing i did not like was abby. when she was first introduced, i though whoa. i don't want to spoil the book for anyone, so i'll just leave it there, but yeah abby's character had so much potential and i did not like how she was written.
other than that, for a debut novel let it fall is a 4/5. the author did an amazing job writing this book.
I went into this book blind, which I don’t really do. To be honest, the cover really intrigued me and I was super interested to see what it was about. The first thing to note about this book is that it is pretty dark and it starts from the very beginning of the book so definitely check the trigger warnings before reading it. Despite the darkness, this book was really good! I can’t lie, I definitely wanted to throw my phone across the room at times because of Giselle being in a relationship with Xavier despite Chris being in love with her and being the absolute sweetest! I definitely wish I had a Chris in my life. I feel like it’s kind of hard to go into more detail about this book without spoiling it but it’s definitely not what I expected, in a really good way. There were a lot of parts of the book that I did not expect and I felt that the author did a really good job of addressing difficult topics throughout the book. It did take me a bit longer than normal to get through this book, but it was definitely worth it!
This book has an incredible and imaginative plot. I don’t think I’ve ever read a story quite like this one. I’m used to dark romance with a lot of spice. This romance is just… dark. And I enjoyed that more than I expected to.
The characters in this story are deeper than they seem. The last 50 pages had me on the edge of my seat without being able to put it down. If you love a slow burn without spice, this is definitely the book for you.
I found the writing style to be a bit confusing at times. Some of the dialogue seemed formal, almost like they were in a different time, while some of it was very modern. That’s probably the only reason I didn’t give four stars.
the emotional rollercoaster that this book took me on? i was not ready for that.
i’m a sucker for the always been you trope and this book delivered on that despite how oblivious giselle is to chris. the plot was complex and had so much depth. it just kept pulling me in. i was captivated by their story.
giselle has been through a lot in the last two years of her life. being back in her hometown and seeing the way her dad is when they go back without her mom is heartbreaking to her because she knows how much they loved each other. in a way, i could see how much giselle adored her parents’ love for each other and how she wanted that too.
chris has been through everything with giselle. he’s been in love with her for all this time so of course he’s jealous when she started dating xavier. chris comes off as cautious about that, but still drops everything and rushes to her the moment she calls and tells him she needs him. chris absolutely loves giselle with his entire being.
xavier has a lot of trauma and i could see that. but my issue with him was how he used his trauma as an excuse for the way he acted. i think he was so hell bent on revenge that he never got the chance to process what happened. because of this, he’s closed off and emotionally manipulative toward giselle.
overall, i enjoyed reading this book and i could feel the pull giselle and chris had toward each other. they are soulmates and home is where the other is so they will always find their way back to each other.
I received an ARC from the author for an honest review. I was confused and a little lost at the beginning but I quickly fell in love with the story, it was really good. Childhood friends to lovers !!! 3.5/4 stars ⭐️
I didn't expect to like this book as much as I did. There were some parts where I could guess what would happen next but that twist, I DID NOT SEE IT COMING, such a cute read even through the sad parts. LOVED IT
The best book ever. It is my all time favourite now. Everything was perfect from the pace of the story till the end. The way it made me emotional and the way it made me laugh. Great work by @authorM.phoenix.
