Assassin. Demon hunter. Grim Reaper. That’s me. Revelation Carver is my name, being Heaven’s Mr. Fix-It is my game. Overworked and underpaid, I was busy staking out a demon slated to become the next Lucifer, Ruler of Hell, when yet another job came down from on high.
My challenge to take down the next great Satan is put on hold. The new task? Eliminate a runaway demon stalking Seattle. A minimum-wage task, yet my bosses think it's one for the Grim Reaper. God knows—literally—I don’t have enough on my plate.
What should have been a simple snag-and-kill operation turns my investigation upside-down. Nephilim are involved in the theft of a Bowl of Wrath. Seven wraths to spread suffering and pain across the world. Under impenetrable protection, they should have been sealed away for all eternity.
Now, Earth’s population will pay the price while angels stink of subversion. It all comes down to me. My mystery to solve. With the impossible now a frightening reality, I’ve got the biggest job of my long life. All I have to do? Stop Armageddon.
Heaven has yet another job for its Grim Reaper. A job I must finish for the sake of all humanity. Failure is not an option, even if it kills me.
Angel Assassin is book one in the Rev Carver series, an action urban fantasy series by Paul Sating. A spin-off of Paul’s Zodiac Series, Rev Carver has everything you’d expect from the massive urban fantasy world he built there. If you like mythology, folklore, magic, badass assassins, and sidekicks with attitudes to go with a dose of irreverence, put this Grim Reaper on your to-do list.
Paul Sating is a fantasy author and podcaster who spends most of his time traveling the Pacific Northwest in search of elusive monsters everyone claims aren't real.
The creator of the Audio Fiction podcast, Paul began adapting many of those scripts to novel form and published his first three books in 2018. He is now fooling around with his first love--dark fantasy. He writes epic, urban, and even litrpg (a trust jack of all trades and master of none).
He stays grounded by rooting for bad soccer teams, traveling around his beautiful corner of the world, and spending every moment he can with the three people who don't let him think too highly of himself--his wife and daughters.
If you haven't read The Zodiac series then I suggest you do, not only because it's awesome and you'd be doing yourself a favour, but also because this is a spinoff to that series.
You don't need to read that series to read this one though, if this one appeals to you more than go for it.
But there is a small spoiler that you might gloss over if you're not into the Zeke books, it's near the start of the book and reveals the twist that happened at the end of the seventh Zodiac book, so yeah, keep that in mind.
I also think it's better to read that series first for an intro to the world, because this is an expansion of it.
So, this time we're following an angel instead of a demon, and he's pretty cool. He doesn't act like your typical angel AND HE WEARS A LEATHER DUSTER!!! Most important fact, you're welcome.
He has a sidekick/familiar called Billee, she's not quite as cool as Rev, but I'm sure she'll grow into it.
Rev is also a multitasker extraordinaire, he's a Grim Reaper, occasional assassin, and he keeps an eye on...certain demons. He can do it all and he's good at his job(s).
He can be really caring too, even after living a very long life, and funny. I'm sure he has some stories to tell, and I'd be happy to listen to them all.
Also I really like that this book has a similar enough feel to the Zodiac books, but also feels different and like it's own thing. Can't wait to read more books in the world, in both Rev's and Zeke's perspectives.
*Thank you to BookSirens for providing me with an e-ARC for which I'm leaving a review voluntarily*
Where Paul Sating's Zodiac series follows various denizens of the Underworld (i.e. Hell), this thoroughly entertaining spin-off introduces some inhabitants of the other side:
Revelation Carver, perpetually stressed and out of patience with his superiors' demands, is a Reaper, assassin, and general fix-it guy for whatever goes slightly sideways where Heaven is concerned. This gun-toting, leather duster-wearing angel and his human familiar/sidekick Billee find themselves with - as usual - a whole host of problems on their plate in this fastpaced series opener packig equal amounts of action and humour.
Rev is a great character (let's be honest, you had me at "leather duster"), the plot had me hooked, and the pace is perfect all the way through. Very much looking forward to more from this series! An immensely enjoyable expansion of the Zodiac universe and my favourite book from this author thus far.

This is titled as a 'book one' so the obvious conclusion is there will be more books in this series, that makes me glad. Rev Carter is one tired angel, having spent thousands of years being a Reaper and escorting the dead, he also has become not only the most senior of Reapers, but also the 'special projects' guy, meaning, when a bad guy needs taken out, he is ordered for the job. With one of the seven bowls of the Armeggadon being stolen from the Safe in the Upperworld, Rev's biggest task is to find the Nephilim and stop them at ... at any cost, before the world is lost.
After thousands of years of doing the same type of job, one would think a person would be immune, and jaded, to be able to have any care for humanity, yet this character seems to still have it. Rev is sarcastic and witty, yet at times his anger at injustices, and yes, even at his job, comes through quite a bit. The story is fairly fast paced, and action is spaced evenly with background information - shared by explaining to his 300th (or so) assistant - of how things came to be for this story.
Fans of the Nate Temple series will surely enjoy this read. I find I like dthe snark and sarcasm quite a bit. Story flowed well, with enough world-building I could easily picture the settings. The story itself was planned well, and progressed at a good steady pace. Defintely would recommend to a friend.

This was a great start to a new series. The character work and story line were well written. I was hooked from start to finish and can't wait to see what happens next.
I received an ARC of this book and I am voluntarily leaving my honest review.
Looking forward to the second book. This was a great read with interesting characters and a great take on the subject. It was well paced, easy reading that I didn’t want to put down.
Angels aren't all we think they are. Rev is the Grim Reaper with so much on his plate that it's becoming to much. He wants to quit. Billie is his familiar. She's getting on the job training. Really like the story. Can't wait to see which way the series will go.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Received as an ARC ( 2022 ); also received an audiobook from the author that's beautifully brought to life by the narrator Richard McLarn, this is an honest review.
Rev Carver already has a crazy ass job as being a jack of many trades of the Heavenly Upperworld serving everything as an assassin to a demon hunter to the escort of souls crossing over into the Afterlife. Now, Rev, along with his familiar Billie are racing against the clock as some dumbass is playing a deadly game with mortal lives in Olympia by manipulating kids and adults alike to criminal acts that have consequences. And what Rev discovers an whom delivered a powerful wraith upon the mortals only pisses Rev off and makes him the kind of guy you don't want coming for you. No one will escape the Reaper Minister. This is one hell of an adventure: mixing snarky humor, intense action with a dose of poignancy that touches your heart; the Rev Carver series are stories to invest your time, highly recommended.
A bit of a different take on Heaven and He'll and where we go when we die but Rev the Reaper, the main Reaper seemed like a good, compassionate man. The Angelic lot, well to put it bluntly are arseholes. A Nephilim is loose on earth and has basically caused a lot of trouble and Rev has to catch the Nephilim. Plenty of chaos occurs. Worth five stars.
Audiobook: I enjoyed this urban fantasy which featured the Grim Reaper as the protagonist. I liked the characters and their dedication to their missions. I admired the unusual magic system and the strange beings which made an appearance in this tale. I was entertained by the moments of humor. I considered some of the subject matter presented to be thought-provoking. I thought Richard McLarn's narration was easy to follow, and his performance enhanced the story's entertainment. I was gifted a copy of the audiobook. I volunteered, without financial gain, to leave this review which included my honest opinions regarding this story.
I received this book for free for an honest review. This was a fun read. Rev Carver is a great character. He is well rounded and an over all fun person that I would like to hang out with. I really identified with Billee. She is very similar to me I find. The events in this book seem to be leading up to something really really big and I look forward to seeing what this is! I enjoy the overlap with the Zodiac series in how they talk about the Underworld and the politics in all realms. I do look forward to following Rev's adventures.
Spin off of the Zodiac Books and wow. Certainly gives you a different perspective of how Angels interact . Rev Carter the bad ass Grim Reaper , an Angel , overworked & underpaid. Saving the world , with his lovely human familiar . Entertaining well written book that leads to an equally well written book 2
Paul Sarting is a freat storyteller. This is an exciting, action packed story. If you demand your angels and the afterlife be biblically accurate you might not like this one, but otherwise, it's a great story. Lots of action, Captivating characters and a complete revision of "Heaven," "Hell," and the afterlife.
It felt like the world building consisted of everything being told to me. I put the book down 50 pages in and couldn’t bring myself to pick it back up. Maybe the pace picks up and action happens, but I couldn’t read any more of the telling.
It’s a shame because I love angel urban fantasy, but this one wasn’t for me.
I enjoyed the ideas, celestial governments, and characters in this Grim Reaper story that goes from heaven to hell and in between. I appreciate the writing style and look forward to seeing what the Reaper develops into or if he will finally get that star in the sky. I will definitely be picking up the entire series as it comes out.
It was a struggle to get through this. The synopsis and the reviews had me hooked, sadly after 8 bought the book it didn’t live up to those. To descriptive and lots of repetitive explanations. Won’t be buying the second book
I enjoyed this book. It took me a bit longer to read it than it should have, but it's worth the time to read. Rev, Billee and Pher are a great team. I'm eager to find out what they do in the next book.
I immediately found myself relating to the MC. I enjoyed the PNW setting and familiarity of the locations. I found myself not wanting to put this book down because I just had to know what was going to happen! Enjoyed this one immensely
If ushering newly departed souls to the afterlife wasn’t a hard enough job, the extra workload laid at the feet of Revelation ‘Rev’ Carver from the Heavenly Council, would make even the jolliest of reapers rather Grim. Between chasing down rogue demons that don’t seem to want to respect ‘The Balance’ between good and evil here on Earth, trying to find stolen heavenly artefacts, and training up a new familiar, it doesn’t do any favours for his soul, social calendar, or appetite. In fact he’s up to his neck in the proverbial and is ready to quit!
This is it! One final job. Save the planet from destruction, and then Heaven owes him big time and he can hang up his scythe and break out the steak knives.
Rev Carver is the new star from Paul Sating’s Zodiac universe, and trust me, if you enjoy the adventures of Zeke and the crew, you’ll love this.
We find ourselves once again in the Zodiac universe and some might expect a ‘spin-off’ to be lacking from the original story lines, but not so here. The Rev Carver series is for me even better, and dare I say even compliments the original series. Paul has painted more wonderful characters into a great urban fantasy story, only this time from the perspective of Heaven.
Miss this and miss out! Revelation Carver is the filet mignon to Zeke’s chicken wings.
Rev and his familiar Billie have a lot of challenges ahead of them. When someone has stolen one of the sacred bowls which has started a pandemic in the world. Trying to track down a Nephilim that is turning all of them against each other and causing chaos. A very interesting book that includes demons, reapers, upper and lower world. Great book and will hold your attention to the end.
Angel Assassin is a great start to a new series. The character are well developed and storyline and world building is well written. I was hooked from start to finish and can't wait to see what happens next. I am so glad I found this series!
