Loveless #2

What's Left of Me

Rate this book
When the actions of one man have marked who you became, how do you get back to who you were?

It’s a question Zoey Allen has been avoiding for the better part of a decade.

The world sees her as a vivacious, take-no-shit businesswoman, and she’s nearly managed to convince herself it’s enough. That is until spontaneous and sweet Aaron Moore ignores the No Trespassing sign on her heart and starts dismantling the walls she’s built brick by brick.

But Zoey has rules for a reason. Her thought process is clear: if she never falls in love, she can’t become a victim again. So when Aaron decides he wants more than the casual relationship she’s been offering, Zoey sticks to the rules.

A threat to the business she’s worked so hard to build brings with it a chance to maintain the status quo— in the form of a rookie cop who offers the no-strings-attached relationship she thinks she wants. Yet no matter how hard she tries, forgetting Aaron is proving impossible, and her past won’t be kept at bay any longer.

For the first time in so long, she desperately wants to find a way back to that elusive peace her first boyfriend stole. To get it, she has to accept how her past has shaped her present while learning how to give her whole heart to somebody with what few pieces remain.

When I set out to write The End and Then, I never planned on there being a sequel. But as I wrote, I fell in love with Eden’s best friend, Zoey. With her fierceness and loyalty. With her exuberance and care.

So I decided she needed her own happy ending. Zoey represents for me so many of the women I have been close to in my life. I have watched friends and family members endure and overcome abusive situations far more than should be possible. But the truth is, it’s all too common a situation.

I hope that this story helps people understand better what it is to live with that trauma, and to fight so hard to move past it. I hope that men and women who have been through what Zoey has will come away from this story knowing that they are worthy of good and patient love. We all are.

Thank you to everyone who has joined me on this author journey, for rooting for me and being excited for every little milestone. The best is yet to come.

I wanted to like this one more than I did. It wasn't all bad but I found myself setting it aside in favor of other books.

I felt like Zoey was talking to everyone except the person she needed to, Aaron. One of those things where a conversation just helped correct the disconnect and it was avoided the entire time. Just. Talk.

Much like book one, this feels more centered on trauma recovery and when trying to blend romance the split focus became a problem. It almost feels like romance was used as a solution to trauma in a way. Which didn't work for me. I would have liked to see either plot line more focused on. I didn't feel like adding Kit to this made sense. At all.

It was an okay read but I wasn't blown away.

A really great follow up to The End and Then. Hannah Bird does a really great job writing raw, emotional romances and the absolute best and most patient hero’s.

What to expect:
-Emotional romance
-Small town setting
-Guarded heroine
-Casual relationship situation
-Hero wants more
-Side mystery storyline
-A ton of cameos from book 1

“I’m beginning to realize at some point or another we all fall victim to tragedy. It’s the universal truth, even more so than love.”

I wish I could give this book more than 5 stars.

What’s Left of Me, brings us right back to the quaint town of Loveless where we are met with some very familiar faces. If Hannah ever decides to write more books regarding the characters from this town (I won’t say names but she knows which characters story I want haha) I would drop everything I was doing to read it!

This book focuses on Zoey’s story and how she has spent years trying desperately to escape her traumatic past. Swoon…I mean Cue Aaron. Can this man be real? Aaron is truly the most patient man I have ever read about and he is exactly who Zoey needs in her life.

I’d also like to put a spotlight on the bond between Zoey and Eden. These two are more like sisters than best friends and its endearing just how much these two have each other’s backs.

Hannah does a beautiful job creating a book that keeps you turning page after page. This book holds you captive and will make you feel literally every emotion known to mankind. Besides balling my eyes out, I found myself laughing along with the characters – all I’m going to say is thyme.

So take my word, and read this book -preferably outside, on a warm summer day, with a large glass of lemonade.

I will read anything Hannah writes and I can’t wait to see what she has next in store for us!

Me? Having the privilege of reading this book before is out in the world?? of course. Call me Mrs. Moore from now on. (Babe if you see this it’s just a joke)
Joke aside, Hannah does it again, writing stories that you just can tell are experiences and feelings that only the feminine life can give you, there's that secrete language, that well known pain that comes with girlhood. Hannah's stories are like a shelter where you won't be judge but only be met by love and understanding. I can't wait to read Promise Me This ♥

Another five star read from Hannah Bird! 🙌🏼

We’re back in Loveless, and this time it’s all about Zoey and Aaron. Hannah always gives her main ladies a tragic backstory to work through and she writes so beautifully and handles these delicate topics with such care. Please check content warnings before reading and swipe for the book description.

I love Zoey. I can see her being frustrating, but I think if you’ve been in a DV situation, it’s easier to see just why she’s so guarded with her heart, even if she’s been causally dating Aaron for so long. Aaron, like Chase from book one, is so sweet and patient. He’s a big ol cinnamon roll and had me swooning all over the place.

But let me tell you who really stole the show - GARY 🥹🥹 that man is just the absolute cutest and I am so glad he played a big role in this book like the first.

There’s a mystery element in this one and I was actually pretty surprised to find out whodunnit.

I could ramble on forever but just read Hannah’s books, okay? They’re amazing. Romance, friendship, personal struggles, they’ve got a little something for everyone.

Maybe closer to 3.5⭐️ but a good read nonetheless.

Another beautiful, emotional, heart-wrenching novel from Hannah Bird. I was a HUGE fan of The End & Then, so I had very high expectations for What's Left of Me. Hannah absolutely hit it out of the park!
I absolutely love Zoey and the mess she is! She's got some major trauma from her past she's trying to deal with, and it's such a relevant situation a lot of women in real life go through. She is funny and relatable, and I loved every second inside her head! Sometimes from an outside perspective, I found myself thinking "Come on Zoey, get over it and be with Aaron!" but then I really put myself in her shoes and I couldn't blame her one bit for being afraid and thinking she doesn't deserve what Aaron has to give her.
Aaron was an absolute gem. He may not have known the details of Zoey's trauma, but he was so patient with her and supported her every step of the way. Even when she did everything possible to drive him away. He stood by her, and gave her the space to be able to sort things out on her own, instead of trying to make himself the hero by "saving" her.
I really think my absolute favorite relationship in both novels of this series is between Zoey and Eden. They are the definition of true friendship. I found myself smiling and tearing up at them so many times, because they are each other's chosen family, and they are exactly what the other needs.
Lastly, this may be an unpopular opinion, but I actually really like Kit. Not as a match for Zoey, but I found him so interesting. Yes, he was arrogant and could be an a-hole, but he was also incredibly respectful and kind. He definitely had his own painful past to deal with, and I'd love to see a book with his happy ending (Hannah, help a girl out!)

Her characters in both novels are so incredibly relatable, whether you've been in their exact situation or not. Hannah definitely makes me feel less alone, like the characters she creates are actually good friends of mine. The writing is also so beautifully descriptive, that it felt like I could clearly see every setting and situation in my head like a movie. I truly cannot wait for Hannah's next novel, I will pre-order and ARC read absolutely anything she writes. Hannah is a beautiful person and an incredible author!

Loved returning to loveless for Zoey and Aaron's story. Zoey and Aaron have been seeing each other for nearly a year and while Aaron feels ready for the next step Zoey needs more time to heal from her past relationship. While their is a beautiful love story between Zoey and Aaron (who may be the most patient man on earth) the heart of this book is Zoey healing her past and finding her own strength. Gary, Rose and all of the side characters complete this book with found family and small town vibes.

Another deep emotional read from Hannah Bird! I mean seriously Hannah can write a story that will make you feel deep to your core.

🌺 Summary: What’s Left of Me is the story of Zoey Allen. A woman finding her way back to herself after being in an abusive relationship. As someone who used to be the life of the party, Zoey has now retreated in to herself and wears a mask of the person she used to be. Doing whatever she feels she needs in order to not be hurt again. That is until Aaron enters her life and threatens to breakdown all the walls she has put up to protect herself. Zoey is faced with the choice between protecting her heart the only way she knows how or opening herself up in a way that she hasn’t been able to do in a decade.

🌸 Thoughts: I love this book so much. This story beautifully displays the feelings of isolation, loneliness, sadness, loss of self that can result from being in an abusive relationship. But it also portrays strength, friendship, hope and the will to survive.

Zoey and Eden’s friendship is a beautiful thing. True to the essence of what friends should be. Confident in each other to do the right thing, having each others backs, keeping each other company, and holding each other accountable.

I haven’t even mentioned the perfection that is Aaron yet. Thoughtful, kind, loving, patient. I only wish we had gotten even more of Aaron, but hey that’s me just being selfish haha.

This book is a realistic view of domestic violence. You aren’t getting a book that’s glossing over issues to make characters more likeable or relatable. Be prepared to possibly be frustrated at times but try to remember that people’s feelings and emotions cannot just change because you want them to quicker or even if they want them to. Witnessing the struggle is what makes the book more powerful.

I don’t know how Hannah does it, but she does. First the story is about a woman (Zoey), who keeps people at arms length so she can never be hurt like she was by her ex-boyfriend (Topher). Topher was physically, emotionally, and verbally abusive towards Hannah. Hannah never told anyone about the abuse and lied about how she received the scars/bruises. The ones you can see, and the ones you can’t. She meets Aaron, who is this amazingly patient and loving man. But she still is holding on to her past and unable to move forward.

This story was very close to my heart. I was in an abusive relationship. And the fear of telling people, the fear of what took you so long, or the rejecting sting of failure always at the forefront. This month marks 13 years of me having to move 2500 miles away from my ex-husband, to start over. It’s hard trusting people, but when you finally do, it’s so worth it.

Hannah gets it, she just does. And she helps with the continuous healing process 💜

LOVED the 1st one, The End and Then and LOVED this one as well!!

Small town vibes ✔️
Friendship ✔️
Overcoming hardship ✔️
Swoon worthy male lead ✔️✔️

The first book made me fall in love with these main characters and I’m so happy to get to read Zo’s story. I love her and Eden’s friendship and Aaron was such a great male lead. He had so much patience for Zoey, which is what she needs. Love the setting with it picking back up in Loveless. Overall, it was a great book!

If you like Colleen Hoover books, you’ll love this one and The End and Then.

Thank you Hannah for my ARC copy. This is my honest review.

I absolutely love reading about strong women on their healing journey (plus romance mixed in ofc else who am I). Zoey, who we met in the first book, gave nothing of her past, closing off that part of herself, at the detriment of her current relationship with Aaron. What's Left of Me is her story, where she finally really let people in and heals from her past (as much as one can).
I loved Aaron who was absolutely sure about his love for Zoey, but even more of her love for him. He never gave up on her 🫶.
It was so easy to root for both Zoey and Aaron. They deserved the absolute best, and seeing them have their happy ever after was a treat!

Thank you to the author for the ARC. All opinions are my own.

When I tell you that Hannah knows how to write a story I mean it.

This is the second book in the Loveless series and I absolutely loved it. We got to see Zoey’s story unfold and learn about her past trauma.

This book has all the best things. It has spice, romance, trauma, overcoming difficulties, emotion, and so much more.

Just like The End and Then, this book spoke to my soul. If you are ever looking for a novel to transport you into a small town story but with such big hearts and adventure then try these two novels. You won’t be disappointed. Simply amazing.

Now I need Zander’s story!

While better than book one, this book still doesn’t cut it. There were so many unnecessary added storylines, from the vandalism/revenge to the new in town cop, Kit.

I still didn’t love the heavy focus on trauma recovery and the positioning of a relationship being the healer for it. It felt unrealistic that the fmc would wake up one morning and suddenly feel better about all the guilt she was carrying.

There were parts I really enjoyed - like Zoey and Aaron’s relationship- which helped me get through the storyline. I wish we saw more of them and less of Zoey going through her trauma stages of grief.

Just like Hannah Bird's first book, this story was powerful, emotional and empowering. I loved the way Zoey was portrayed and the strength she showed when finally opening up to her friends about past abuse. Aaron is such a sweetheart. I loved how he supported Zoey but also let her make all of her own decisions.

I highly recommend for those looking for an emotional romance set in a small town, strong female friendships, and healing for the past. 🌿

Hannah Bird has done it again!!! What a brilliant second book in the Loveless series.

⭐️ I cannot give this book any less than 5 stars! Such an easy and lovely read. It has really captured the small town feel (similar to the first one) and being surrounded by friendship and people who care.

⭐️ The friendship between Zoey and Eden is just unmatched. Watching it develop throughout the book was beautiful and Eden never faltered in her support for Zoey. Such a comfort friendship to read about.

⭐️ Initially, I found it difficult to warm to Zoey’s character and I couldn’t understand why. But as I went further into the book, I started loving her! She is a strong, independent and loyal woman who is honest in everything she does.

⭐️ Aaron was the perfect match for Zoey. When he said he would wait forever, he really was not lying. I loved how he never pushed her to speak through her trauma until she was ready but he was always there ready to listen. He is a perfect man and I have no bad words about him (which is rare for a MMC).

⭐️ Please read the content warnings as usual but I absolutely recommend this book to everyone! I smashed through it so quickly and it was a beautiful love story. Thank you to Hannah for sharing this with me.

🫶🏼 “It wasn’t love that made my mom stay with Mark. Love doesn’t do that, wouldn’t do that. It was fear. And you, Zoey Allen, are not afraid.” 🫶🏼

TW: Domestic Violence (Past)

First and foremost, thank you Hannah for the ARC in exchange for an honest review. This book is everything I expected and more! You have delivered such a strong sequel filled with vulnerability and heartfelt events.

“When you're with the person you’re meant to be with, everyone before is insignificant.”

“I never wanted you to be anything but yourself, Zo. The good, the bad, the ugly… I want all of you, not just the parts you think are perfect. All of it’s perfection to me.”

Zoey and Aaron… where do I start!? When I read first read The End and Me, I was rooting for these two characters so much! Aaron has graduated to be one of my top book boyfriends 🥹. His patience, understanding, maturity and love were top of the line amazing. Zoey, such a strong female as she was dealt wild cards she was overcoming in her journey from trauma.

The friendship in this book was one of my favorite aspects. Every character had such unique struggles and stories and they found with each other, that heartfelt support, with such a strong bond in their found family.

"I marvel at the stack of hands, all connected to different bodies and stories and lives, but joined by the choice to love and support one another. No amount of shared DNA could be stronger than that."

I can't wait for you all to read this second installment in the Loveless Series. Beyond impressed by your work Hannah and in love with the characters you have created. Love the strong women that came from trauma and have found their strength in friendship and new love.

Hannah knows how to write a compelling contemporary romance! I was so excited to get an ARC copy of her second book after having the chance to read an ARC of her first. I was also excited to see how Aaron and Zoey’s story would unfold. Zoey is one of those people you can relate to in a story and it’s so refreshing. She’s got trauma and is just trying to do her best to deal with it. Aaron is like the most adorable sweetest guy, you know he loves her from the word go but he tries so hard to give her the space she needs because he just wants to be with her. There is great drama and intrigue and even suspense in this story. I really enjoyed reading it and getting lost in Loveless once again.

I liked What’s Left of Me, slightly more than The End and Then. While I think Hannah Bird writes beautiful books, I can’t find myself getting completely immersed in them. Which is a bummer for me and unfortunate. I felt more of a connection between Zoey and Aaron that was enjoyable. I’d still recommend this book although it isn’t one I’d probably reread.

Once again, Hannah knocks it out of the park with this book!

I absolutely loved The End & Then, and loved Eden & Chase's story. I wasn't sure anything would top that story for me.

But this sequel is just as strong as the first- a beautiful story about overcoming the traumas from our past and finding healing from letting others in. I also absolutely LOVED how much Aaron cared for Zoey, even when she kept pushing him away. It's the kind of love everyone wants, and it was beautifully portrayed within this story.

Thank you to the author for this wonderful ARC. I had so much fun, and cannot wait to continue reading whatever she writes next!

Where do I even start? I got the absolute honor of reading this book before it is released and I can’t thank Hannah enough. This book is haunting, and empowering, and passionate. It’s heavy at times, I won’t lie. I found myself in Zoey’s shoes so many times. I have never met a character that I relate to more, and yes, for all of the same reasons. Hannah’s ability to write this situation as accurately as she did was incredible. Having come from the same past as Zoey, it was just crazy how many of her exact thoughts I have actually had and felt in my own life. It was written so well and true to a woman who has experienced abuse.

And Aaron? Aaron was EVERYTHING. That man walked through fire for his woman, and I LOVED him. Sometimes the fire that proves we’re worthy of the other persons trust is waiting, and I loved that Aaron was man enough to wait and prove himself through actions. I will never forget that part of this story, and I respect the bell out of how he was written.

You guys, Hannah can do no wrong, and this book is just one more example of that.

I absolutely love being back in Loveless! It was so fun to see what the characters were up to. I loved Zoey’s character from The End and Then, so was very excited to read her story. My heart broke for all that Zoey had to go through. Hannah does an excellent job of writing about overcoming trauma. Everyone absolutely needs an Aaron in their life! Definitely recommend checking this one out, but do read The End and Then first!

Read if you like:
-small town
-emotional romance
-found family
-a little mystery

4⭐️ 2.5🌶️

I absolutely adored Eden and Chase in The End and Then and I will definitely get a review up for that soon — just read it over the weekend! I fell in love with the relationship between Eden and Zoey and eagerly dove into What’s Left of Me — Zoey’s story. Hannah is a beautiful writer and her strength is definitely in illustrating friendships, found family, trauma, and growth.

Much like Eden, Zoey has a traumatic history of her own, going all the way back to a high school relationship. Unlike Eden she has kept it a secret from everyone. On the outside she is a strong, fearless woman and bar owner. On the inside she is still letting her last drive her future and living in fear. Her plan, as flawed as it may seem, is to never fall in love — to keep all relationships casual so she can bail out at any moment. When her casual relationship with sweetheart Aaron goes on for too long and falls in love with her and wants more, her fear response kicks in and she sabotages it all. The problem is that you can’t say you want to keep it casual when you’re already in love. Zoey, being the stubborn woman she is, is determined to end things with Aaron and find a no strings attached relationship of the past. When she meets a new to town rookie cop who is investigating some vandalism at her bar, the opportunity presents itself and she takes it. But casual doesn’t feel like it used to when Aaron is the only thing on her mind. Fighting through past trauma to get back to him is a journey that she has to decide if she’s prepared to take.

In some ways this feels like women’s fiction more than romance, or maybe a hybrid of the two. Much of the story is spent on Zoey trying to figure herself out. We don’t spend as much of this story on relationship building and growth as we did in Eden’s, but once we do get there I just wanted to cheer and hug the crap out of Zoey! There were definitely times I wanted to shake her too… for getting her own way and not letting herself be happy, with that said I don’t have experience with this trauma and everyone protects themselves in different ways. Aaron is an absolute gem and knew what he had with her no matter what she said, and honestly believed for the both of them when she couldn’t. I went back and forth on how I felt about Kit and his parts in the story. What I do know is that we’d all be lucky as hell to have a friendship like Zoey and Eden do 🤍

Overall this is a definite yes from me! I can’t wait to read what Hannah does next, thank you so much for the ARC!

I'd like to thank Hannah Bird for allowing me to read this book in advance. Considering how unwell I was at the time, I wasn't sure if I should have read it right away. I was worried that it would cloud my judgment. It didn't matter, though, because I devoured the copy as soon as I received it.

I anticipated Zoey's story would be immensely angsty when I first read the blurb. But I am sure the frustration is well worth it. Her past trauma made her self-reliant and emotionally guarded, leading to avoidant attachment behavior. But I can't hold it against her. In relationships, others tend to hold back in order to protect themselves from getting hurt. The worst part is that they wound up hurting themselves while neglecting to protect the ones who matter most to them in their lives. They unconsciously sabotage their own happiness without even realizing it.

In addition, if I were to sum up this book in one sentence, it would be, "Please God, send an Aaron into my life." I mean, darn, how I would love to have someone in my life who is willing to fight and hold off till I'm emotionally ready. He has now captured my heart after Chase stole it in the first book, #TheEndAndThen 🥲Aaron is without a doubt at the top of my list if someone were to ask for a book boyfriend.

I also admire the bond between Eden and Zoey. What most impresses me about them is how receptive they are to supporting each other despite having had their own traumas. Such friendships are becoming increasingly rare these days.

Anyhow, before I spoil everything away, I'll simply point out that this book has such an inspiring story to which others may be able to relate. And if you're into Small-Town romance, Found Family, He Falls First and Trauma and Healing Trope, you better grab a copy of this book, which is already out today.

Congratulations Hannah, and many thanks once more for sharing this unforgettable story of Zoey and Aaron.

What’s Left Of Me is the sequel to The End & Then and we get transported right back to the small town of Loveless and right into Zoeys story… which I was here for, after reading Then End & Then I was REALLY hoping Zoey would get her own book, I absolutely love this strong, fierce, firecracker of a character!! She is the ultimate bestie - I so adore Zoey & Eden’s friendship, their banter and just overall love for eachother!! Throughout this book we get to learn about and love Zoey just a little more than we already do!! We learn about her past and her traumas (TW for domestic violence) and read as she overcomes her trauma and allows her self to love! She’s so fierce - though she doesn’t know it for most of the book… but oh boy when she figures it out!! There is something beautiful about a strong female character overcoming her trauma and finding herself that is just so powerful…. And this book truly encompasses what that can look like & it’s so inspiring!! One particular moment I loved happened while Eden was trying on wedding dresses…. There is some profound heartache on Eden’s account still very much alive… but you see Zoey rise to occasion and her little speech to Eden was just beautiful… in that same chapter we see Zoey have a wee revelation about her relationship with Aaron & I loved it… was a little peek into the ending of the book!! Speaking of Aaron…. Can this man just be any more perfect?? Honestly what the heck Hannah…. Literal queen of writing the MOST perfect book boyfriends!! We def got into the spice a little more in this book too 🥵 😉 Once again Hannah has written a beautiful story…. She writes about tough things and handles the trauma these character have gone through or are going through in such a thoughtful & respectful way. Do yourself a favor & read both of her books…. They are beautifully written stories that everyone should have the privilege of reading. Thank you HB for allowing me into your world to read this a little ahead of everyone else in exchange for my honest review!!
