Beneath Black Sails #4

Through Dark Storms

Rate this book
No home. No hope. No safe harbours. Just one final clue.

Castaway on a desert island, Vice has lost everything and everyone. If she’s going to live – truly live, she must not only fight to survive but also battle her inner demons. Only then can she escape her island… and her past.

Without the woman he loves, Knigh is unravelling like a frayed rope. And around him, the refugee fleet that fled the battle of Nassau is low on food, water, and options. As the Royal Navy closes in, they must keep one step ahead or all they sacrificed will be for nothing.

But finding their way back to each other isn’t the end of their problems. With thousands of lives at stake, they can’t run forever. They need the impossible: a home that’s safe from Mercia’s vengeance.

Maybe, just maybe, the answers lie not in their future, but in the past and its long-lost treasure.

If you love Sarah J Maas’s gut-wrenching romances and the adventure of Pirates of the Caribbean, you’ll love the breathtaking conclusion to this new adult fantasy series.

Read Through Dark Storms today and discover a centuries-old mystery, an epic happily ever after, and what else besides the kraken lurks in the deep.

This is a cute and satisfying conclusion to a great pirate adventure full of magic and action. I am really happy that I gave this series a chance!

Of all the things Vice had done in her life, destroying a town with a tidal wave was the last one she expected to be called ‘hero’ for.

After the destruction of Nassau, Vice ends up alone on a deserted island, where her days are counted if she cannot find a way back to Knigh and her friends. Rest assured, they are not separated for too long, but just long enough for us to long for their reunion and get really anxious about it. As soon as they are all back together, they continue their quest for Drake's mythical treasure with even more fervor because they now need to care for all the survivors from Nassau and find a safe place before the Navy catches up with them.

The pace is great, as in the previous books, and even though this book is almost 500 pages long, it didn't feel slow or long. There were action and stressful situations, as well as steamy scenes and more serious moments. As the author said in her review, if the previous books brought betrayal, angst, and steam, Through Dark Storms brings us The Feels.

There are a few things that bothered me a teeny tiny bit, like how we didn't see Vane again after his betrayal (I know he got what he deserved, but it didn't really feel like a satisfying closure), or how we were told that Vice became friend with some of the islanders, but it was not really shown.

I am a little sad that we didn't see more of Perry and the other side characters (and Barnacle and her babies! There were not nearly enough kittens moments in this book!), but at the same time I enjoyed the time spent on Knigh and Vice's relationship, and how we can see them become a solid unit. Vice changes a lot during her time alone, and I like this new, more mature, and levelheaded version of her. It was also a relief to see her finally trust Knigh enough to really work with him as an equal partner, and she was also able to rely more on her friends, instead of trying to control everything and take all the risks alone.

He was a young man with a foolish ambition and a cruel streak. It was a terrible combination.

Mercia continues to be intriguing, and sly (he does deserve his nickname of His Royal Slyness after all), but he's a villain that I enjoyed reading about, and I would have liked to spend even more time with him. I feel that when everything got resolved, not enough explanation was given about his reasons to behave the way he did. I got the impression that he was a complex character, but his justifications didn't seem that deep or complex. I don't want to say more though because I don't want to spoil anyone.

I am also happy that FitzRoy was more present in this book. As I said in my review of the previous book, for some reason he grew on me, and while I despised him after the first book, I ended up loving him in this one. The author did a great job with him and his "redemption".

“Once upon a time,” she went on, “I thought the notorious Lady Vice should be hanged for her crimes, though I confess I was much more concerned about getting a new pianoforte and debuting in Lunden so I could find a husband. Things change.”

I love Is. She's a great female character and I would love to have a novella or spin-off about her. She's feisty, strong, and determined to make her way in life and be happy. She took her destiny into her own hands, and once she got a taste of freedom and adventure, there was no going back to the cozy life of a lady for her. Even though we don't see her that much in the series, she is a refreshing and sweet character, and I like the idea that Vice, Knigh, and Is will be able to spend more time together.

She cleared her throat, everyone’s eyes upon her. “Friends come and go, like waves on the shore, but the true ones stick around in your life, like an octopus to the face.”
She raised her glass. Saba, Wynn, Effie, and Lizzy burst into laughter and toasted that. Is cocked her head, squinting. Perry opened her mouth, then closed it, as though unable to formulate a response.
“Did I not do it right?” Vice shrugged. “I need more practice.”
Saba wiped tears from the corners of her eyes. “I’m just trying to work out whether I’m the octopus or you are.”

The crew's dynamic is cute and sweet, and I really like the "found family" vibe there was in the whole series, but particularly in this last book. Overall, this is a great series. Honestly, the only reason it took me so long to finish this last book is that I was reading The Bridge Kingdom series at the same time.

Beneath Black Sails is a swashbuckling adventure full of magic, sea monsters, steam, and epic fights, and I strongly recommend this to any pirate story lovers. There are some loose ends, that might hint at a future spin-off? I would be happy to read more about Is, or even Cat and the mysterious fae that seemed obsessed with her!

Fitz-bloody-Roy. How did you make me fall in love with you in Across Dark Seas, hate you in Beneath Black Sails and Against Dark Tides, Slowly begin to tolerate you In Under Black Skies, to fully in love with you once more in Through Dark Storms? How? HOW? I need answers, especially since you're not even the main character here!

Through Dark Storms picks up with Vice and Ni on the struggle bus. Vice is lost on a deserted island with no way off, and Ni is with his injured crew with rapidly dwindling supplies. Yet, the navy is still on their tail. Their only hope of safety is the sanctuary Drake has promised. Yet, even if they can find it, even if Ni and Vice can find their way back to each other, there are still the other monsters that lurk beneath the ocean's waves.

I'm in love. I'm in love with literally everything here. Vice's new-found humility, maturity, and self-awareness. Ni's self-forgiveness, loyalty, and compassion. The pacing of the plot that was just one ordeal to the next with just enough tenderness (and interruptions) in between that had me screaming and squealing and giggling and downright terrified. AND FITZ ROY??? FFITZ FREAKING ROY????

Honestly, I don't know if I can even say anything else. I'm just in awe of this book, this series, really. Clare somehow took two extremely flawed characters and helped them grow in such subtle, natural, convincing ways. And look at them now? And Fitz Roy!

All the stars, all the love, I might come back to make this more coherent later, but I probably won't.

Out now: series complete!

Someone asked me what to expect from the final book in the series, so here you go... If book 1 brought the betrayal, book 2 brought the angst, and book 3 brought the steam, this book brings The Feels. All of them.

Don’t sleep on this series! If it’s on your TBR, read it. If it’s not, then add it.

These books could and should be the next big thing. They were perfection all the way through.

A fully fleshed out storyline with beautiful character growth. I felt like I was on the journey right along with Vice, Knigh, and the rest of the pirate crew.

Ahhhhhh!! This series is so amazing and this was a fantastic finish! Knigh and Vice have had SO MUCH character growth over the course of these books and their relationship is so beautiful and that much stronger for everything they’ve faced. And of course there was so much action and tension and swashbuckling, with an epic battle, near-deaths, and of course more sea monsters and magic. Even bloody FitzRoy made me tear up.
Seriously, everyone needs to read these books and then read Kiss of Iron because they are FANTASTIC!!

This was spectacular in every way possible.

Now that i had more time to sit on this- this book series is simply just amazing.

It’s nothing too confusing, but the world building is still there.
The characters are all recognisable, and even though it’s a big cast you won’t really get confused.

I thought the ending was kinda anticlimactic (the big fight scene) but other than that I hugely enjoyed this series!

The next series will be about Cat and I’m so looking forward to her and the brooding fae dude!!

This story wraps up the saga, and it's been a wild ride. However, I didn't find the escalating magic and introduction of new characters as satisfying as I hoped. The lovebirds didn't get enough time together, and didn't get sweaty that much either.

But all the loose ends are tied up, and everyone got the HEA they earned. This is an exciting series.

I loved this book. The end of the last book left us in not a great place, with Knigh and Vice separated after finally publicly showing their crew that they were together. One thing that irritates me a lot in a series is when the main couple is separated for long periods of time (a perfect example of this is the Cassandra Palmer series) but even though it does take a little while for them to reunite, I think it actually feels earned - and Vice in particular has a lot of growth from that period alone. The circumstances leading up to them reuniting were stressful, but again I liked the depth it gave to both her and Knigh’s characters.

In general it felt like the book was constantly moving, and the pacing rarely had slow moments. There was A LOT that happens in this final story, and it did feel like things were (mostly) wrapped up. Knigh and Vice together made me so happy, and I loved how they worked together as a team. There wasn’t as much focus on the side characters - besides Perry - but I think that made sense because of how much plot there was to get through. Also, the focus really was more on Knigh and Vice and their partnership, and I didn’t really miss the focus on side characters that there had been in previous books. There were several pretty stressful situations, especially at the end things looked particularly dire, but there is a happily ever after, which is really what I want for the end of a series.

If you have not started reading this series yet and are reading this to make sure it has a good ending, I am here to assure you that the series is totally worth reading. It’s one of my favorites I’ve read in the last few years, and I’m so happy I took a chance reading the first one from an author I didn’t know.

Quick warning - there are a few things at the end that aren’t completely wrapped up, but which I think might be addressed in a future series. Which I’m already looking forward to!

Goodness. Okay, where to start? So much happens in this book. We were left in a rather precarious and heart-wrenching place at the end of book 3. Through Dark Storms picks back up with your heart in pieces, but don't worry--Clare promised us a satisfying ending and she definitely delivered. To avoid spoilers to both the series as a whole and this book in particular, there aren't a lot of details I can relate. Despite being a fairly straightforward plot (did I just say that? because it feels like so much when you're in the thick of it), it's compelling as anything and kept me turning pages. But the real treat? Watching all those loose ends tied up. And the feels! Your heart is safe with this book (ish. safe-ish). I smiled so much by the time I'd finished that my face hurt. Definitely a great series ending. I can't wait to see what Clare writes next!

What a fantabulous ending! Vice and Knigh have come so far and I loved all the feels in this book. It's also action-packed and kept a good pace all the way to a really intense finale, with plenty of tension, humour and spice along the way. It was also really satisfying to see so many plot threads get resolved in the last few chapters. This is definitely a series closer done RIGHT and I closed the book with a big goofy smile on my face.

I'm so glad it seems like we'll be getting more books set in this world!! Several secondary characters are left with dangling threads, so I can't wait to see what's coming next...

Every book in this series was better than the last. And that’s saying something because book 1 was 4 stars and each book after was 5 stars for me. I can’t remember the last time I read a series where the character arcs were so well-done, empathetic, and believable. Like I actually believe people can change and grow like that. Honestly, most of the time it doesn’t matter to me if it’s not THAT believable as long as I’m having a good time, the plot is good, etc. But now I’ve seen what it can and should actually be like! I’m ruined Clare. I love these fucking pirates. And the gradual increase in 🌶️🌶️ each book makes the last book 🌶️ SO GOOD.

I LOVED THIS SERIES. What a great journey from start to finish. Loved Vice and Knigh, and the story was unexpected in a lot of ways that you dont usually find in a primarily romance story. This author had a real talent for writing romance beats and story beats that lined up perfectly.

Highly recommend, especially if pirates are your vibe!

** I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review **

HELLS.

I LOVED THIS BOOK!!! Okay bear with me...

Vice started off in book one as this bad-ass, pirate vigilante of sorts. She took no ones shit and kept herself locked up tight without even an ounce of budging. Her heart, her emotions, all of it... and then the story unfolds. The transformation she goes through in this story is a rollercoaster of AMAZING stuff. Seriously I sometimes have the hardest time connecting with certain characters but she was it for me! In TDS she finally realizes that love isn't a weakness, and neither is letting her feelings show on her sleeve a little bit. Also, the fight scene with Mercia at the end was *chef's kiss*. Sager's ability to work a fight scene is spectacular, but even more so I found myself hung on every. single. word. which isn't normal for me when usually fight scenes are ones that I usually skim over. NOT THIS ONE!

Knigh... Oh sweet gods he is one of those fictional men that leaves you drooling. I mean, the way he is with Vice and his tender heart but yet the way he can shut it off and be this perfectionist navy man makes me squirm in ALL the good ways. He and Vice's chemistry was SO well done by Sager.

And how the author managed to make me FEEL for characters I should hate? Talk about inspirational. LOL

Overall this final book in the Beneath Black Sails story was so satisfying and well done and ended with one of the best HEA's I've read. The action, the plot, the tension and heartfelt moments. All of it was so worth this read. I found myself unable to put the book down and when it ended I nearly cried. I don't want their story to end!!!

There was only ONE specific time I cried while reading this book and its a little embarrassing lol THE KRAKEN AND KNIGH SCENE! I mean, come ON, if that doesn't make you love Knighton Blackwood then I don't know what will...

I wish I could give this book more than 5 stars. Well done, Clare. FREAKING WELL DONE!

What a phenomenal end to such an amazing series. I absolutely loved every second of it. I put off reading this book for a while because my heart just wasn't ready for it to be over (and honestly, I'm still crying inside a little cause it is). This book is packed full of adventure and definitely puts your emotions through the wringer. I cried... Several times... Sad tears but also many many happy tears (which are so hard to get out of me!!). Actually, I cried through an entire spicy scene just cause I was still reeling from the beautiful moment the characters shared right before lollll and I actually said to them out loud - it's cool guys, don't mind me over here...Get it while you can! LOL. Honestly, the fact I came to care so much about these characters (even one that surprised me cause I *hated* that character at one point) is just a testament to the amazing story that this is. I will carry it with me for a very long time.

Content warnings: Violence, injury, death/death of a parent, grief.

Review originally posted on Chasing Chapters.

"But most of all, I didn’t want any of the things you made me feel. Like perhaps I wasn’t awful and undeserving. Like I could make myself worthy of you and of forgiveness. Like I could live and enjoy the world, rather than battling it and punishing myself. I didn’t want to want you, but every day I craved everything about you."

This finale is everything I hoped for and more.

Vice and Knigh have overcome so much. The unbelievable and seemingly impossible things they went through and the odds they went against… they deserve all the good things in life. I love these two so much and I can’t believe this is the end of their story.

Through Dark Storms was a lengthy book but I needed more. I didn’t want it to end. I was in denial that I have to say goodbye to this world and my favorite pirate crew.

I don’t know what else I should say.

This book had me laughing, crying, squealing in joy and my-heart-is-full-to-bursting swooning!

If you’re a fan of the series this is definitely a satisfying (if a bit bittersweet) conclusion. And if you haven’t read the books yet, please please do so asap. You won’t regret it, promise!

Pirates, sea monsters, hidden treasures, enemies to lovers, spicy romance, betrayal, found family trope… this series has it all!

I would definitely be on board if the author decided to expand on this world.

I received an ARC from the author to read and review. Quoted excerpt/s may change in the final print.

This series is so underrated!! I haven't read a series like this in awhile, with complex characters, realistic relationships and badass piracy that speaks to the radical act that piracy was in itself against the crown in some ways. This book made me laugh, cry, and feel connected to the characters in a way i never imagined. I AM a fan of dark romance, but Knigh's character, chivalry and the way he and V are balanced works so well! A lot of male love interests these days make me cringe. But Knigh was the perfect balance of dark and light. I can't believe more people aren't reading this!

The PERFECT ending to an amazing series. Everything tied itself up perfectly! I loved every minute of it, specially the las 30% of the book! Once again this installment was perfectly balanced with everything you could ask for in an fantasy, fae, magical, pirate, adventurous romance novel. All ends were perfectly tied up to a more than satisfying ending! I love it and would give it 10 stars if possible.

The first book in this series had been on my tbr list for a long time but I never seemed to get to reading it but when I did I fell so completely in love with Avice Ferrers, our dauntless heroine that I could not put the series down. Now I am in tears, as this the 4th book, brings us to the end of Vice's and Knigh's story and boy what a story this has been. I cannot emphasise strongly enough to those who have not yet started the series to start reading, and I can guarantee you will not put the books down and now you can binge read to your hearts content. In this book Vice is missing after the battle of Nassau, the pirate town which was left in shambles and a total loss, and Knigh is going out of his mind with worry. He can still feel her purple light inside of him so he still hoped she was alive and would go to the end of the world to find her. He is finally led to her by an most unexpected ally, one he had done good by and who felt they should return the favour. Once together Vice's priority is to find a home to replace Nassau for all the pirates but more so for the citizens of the town. Her clues to Drake's treasure had led her to believe that this was a place and not riches, a place called Sanctuary which was what they all needed. So in search of the island they go, but what they find is not what they expect, something she does has a terrible effect on all of their chances and they are still hounded by the naval fleet headed by Mercia. We get to see an ending we had been hoping for our heroes but till we get there, there are many heart stopping moments, a battle royale and some sad losses. Throughout the book though we get to see how much Vice has grown and matured, making her a proper Pirate Queen but from the start Vice had been a heroine we could respect. I am so going to miss these fun adventure stories but hope Ms. Sager will write more about the characters we met in this series.

Through Dark Storms is Book 4 in the Beneath Black Sails series by Clare Sager, and is the final book in this series.

This book is everything a fantasy romance book should be- it's filled with stunning worldbuilding, beautiful character growth, spectacular magic, and an epic romance between characters who started as enemies to lovers in earlier books, but can now only be described as fated mates. Add in the pirates, fae, kraken, and leviathan, then things really get interesting!

If you've read the previous books in this series, which I highly recommend you do before reading this book (including the novella Across Dark Seas, Book 0), then be prepared to fall back in love with some of your favourite characters such as the Pirate Queen herself, Lady Vice, her gorgeous pirate-hunter turned rakish pirate, Knigh, and the rest of the amazing crew such as Perry, Saba, Effie, Wynn, Aeden, Clovis, Erec, and of course Barnacle and the kittens.

As for the more unsavoury characters we've met along the way, such as His Royal Slyness Mercia, Fitz-bloody-Roy, and Avice's papa, prepare for some very appropriate, and in some cases totally unexpected, plot twists.

Some of my favourite scenes in the entire series have been in this book- some because of the irony and full-circled nature, others because of the swashbuckling romance. But all because these characters are ingrained in my heart.

So, what are you waiting for? Climb aboard the Venatrix, prepare to set sail, and fight for the ones you love through the darkest of storms.

Clare Sager does not disappoint with the final installment in the Beneath Black Sails series. She knew exactly what was needed to complete the series and for the two to finally get their HEA while staying true to the characters and the story. The enemies to lovers, to enemies, to friends, to forevers is long and wrought with many perils including sharp weapons, crashing waves and dangerous sea creatures.

Through Dark Storms picks up shortly after the major cliffhanger ending of Under Black Skies - I forgive you now. This book doesn't let up whatsoever but it has everything: fun, tension, discovery, sarcasm, family, grief, love, spice and an epic sea battle. Everyone receives what they're due in the most satisfying way, that also allows for future character exploration!

Vice and Knigh will always be OTP (Husband, if you're reading this, I want to dress as them for Halloween one day pleaseeeee!) Clare has burrowed them deep into my soul and I will never be the same. The dual POV elevates their story to a complex emotional journey with the push and pull between the two MCs. Each and every event in the series, whether happy or crushing, is necessary to get Vice and Knigh to their ending.

The intricacies of Clare's characters is something that stands out the most when I think of BBS. The heroine's journey (vs. hero's journey) allows for the most spectacular exploration of Vice as a person who doesn't need anybody, to someone who can and wants to lean on those she loves. The heavy sorrow Knigh holds close to his chest is slowly lifted as he gains freedom of emotion, structure and expectations. These two are ruthless, stubborn and addicting!

While I'm sad to see the conclusion of the series, it will live on as a forever favourite.

P.S. I think my husband loves this series even more than I do!

Thank you Clare for the ARC in exchange for an honest review. I'm gonna need a physical as soon as they're available!

Do you remember those days of Livejournal, Myspace and forums where you left a random string of words like ashjkajshldkshdfalf to show that you had such joy you face-smashed into the keyboard?
Yep. I did that after reading Through Dark Storms. I metaphysically became a teenager again and 'squeed' in all my fangirl glory.

After the cliffhanger ending of UBS we are given a few chapters of Knigh introspection and searching before we are swept back up into piratical battles and the search for Drake's treasure. And we need that because the action starts coming thick and fast and the plot and pace start racing to such an extent that you literally can't put the book down.
Be prepared for a few plot twists and several moments where you stare off into the distance and have to readjust your worldview.
There is also at least one occasion where you will probably say- out loud- "I did NOT see that coming."

The battle scenes are fantastic. I'll admit that I had to look up several terms in order to understand the positioning of certain items onboard a ship and now I have more maritime knowledge than a landlocked person would ever need. The Kraken and ... other assorted SPOILERY creatures are fantastically explored and the final battle will make you late for work if you start reading it in the morning.

I think one of the best things, however, is how every single character (except the dead ones, obvs) got such great character growth. From Perry and Saba to Isabel and even the jerkwad Merica all get to become fully rounded characters that you adore reading about.

As for Fitzroy? Strong sexy ex-Villain vibes. This man needs his own series. Please and thank you.

It's the perfect way to finish off the series and one of my favourites. Highly recommend.

This book blew this world wide open! All the little clues and plot lines come together in a glorious and epic finale! I adore Clare’s books - I always find that the tales she weaves are magical and the world building flows so naturally it’s impossible not to be completely immersed in it.

After the last cliffhanger I was relieved that this book picked up straight after the last book’s events. Thoughout the first part I was practically screaming at them to get to Vee (no spoilers as much as I can!) and I loved that we got to see Vee’s experiences alongside Knigh’s. I loved that even though this was dramatic conclusion that there were still moments of hilarity and laughter.

Vee goes from strength to strength in terms of character development and I loved watching her growth and learn from her previous experiences. She’s still as strong as ever but no longer seems as selfish and works more for the good of all, rather than being fixated on her goals. Knigh is as hot as ever and he is definitely up there in the book boyfriend list!

I felt this was a great conclusion - I’m not giving anything away! But for the love of the fantasy gods - go read it!
The series is absolutely amazing - if you want pirates, fighting, epic worldbuilding, a little spice(!), found family, magic, mythical monsters and strong women then read it now!

And so the saga of the Pirate Queen and her hunter finally comes to its well-deserved close. Whether you're here for the romantic suspense and have loved every steamy, smouldery, argumentative second of it, or like me come along for the ride of piratical adventures in a magical world, you can't fail to find moments here that'll tug on your heartstrings. While I was left a little saddened by how the more adventurous hunt-the-treasure side of things took a backseat, it was the ending the characters needed. By the Lords and Ladies, after book 3 and the cliffhanger of doom, we all needed that closure!

We finally discover the meaning of Drake's treasure, there are sea battles, sea monsters, friendships forged, revelations aplenty, and, of course, sexy tiemz (Vice and Knigh have been reading *ahem* interesting novels). I loved some of the moments we got between each of the crew of the good ship... Well, mostly Venatrix (there have been quite a few they've got through, eh?), but also little nods towards old frenemies like FitzRoy. I think Perry and her world-weary "I'm-not-your-mother" became my favourite to read about (though seriously, FitzRoy). While I'm not a big fan of romantic suspense, I was so glad that finally finally I could 100% ship Knice/Vigh without feeling like they'd be terrible for each other. Character growth, y'all. There were times I just wanted to blooming cheer them.

There were a few things I felt were a bit off. Maybe it's the way the character interactions could sometimes seem more styled after contemporary NA romance scenes (girly night in, reading "smutty" books - that sort of not-so-historial language stuff), or have about changes in their attitudes quite easily. Maybe it was how I'd hoped some side characters and their relationships could have been shown rather than told . Maybe it was how I expected some things to happen that just... Didn't I guess there were times I just wanted a little more from foreshadowed events and characters like Mercia or the important new characters who don't get that much development time on screen.

But but but. For one thing, I enjoyed this much more than book 3. Things happened. Characters grew. Even the writing felt more assured and focussed.

For the other thing: that end. I wasn't sure I was going to like it, expecting it to be all heavy on the romance tropes. It does use some them, but not in a way that made me feel like it was a same-old-same-old cliche . The ends aren't all tied off exactly - there are some juicy hooks for undoubted future adventures in the Sabreverse-, but... Swoon. Just a little bit. And then some other events, both big and small, personal and public... Oh. My. Stars. Not gonna lie, my heart ached with respair.

While the series wasn't exactly my cuppa all the way through (especially when the steam gets steamy!), it does do magical NA piratey romance with style and imagination, not to mention a memorable cast of colourful characters who will set out to surprise you (or steal your heart?! Yes Fitz, side-eye looking at you, you pirate you). A well-crafted HEA... But one that still asks to bring that horizon.

Clare, you did it again! I was a little worried that having such a long break in between the third book and this one, I would forget a ton of details and struggle to get back into it…boy was I wrong!

From the first page, Clare brought us right back to that final scene in UBS and it was off from there! The growth in Vice through the series has been great to see, but I think her biggest breakthroughs and aha moments were in this book. She was still her fierce self as she has always been throughout the series, but I felt myself rooting more for her in this book than I did in any of the others. And I think it was more because I felt she needed to get knocked down a few pegs before she really started to figure out who she was and where that can take her.

As a counselor, I absolutely loved Clare’s touches on grief, leaning on others, and being real in your emotions. I appreciated the realness Clare gave to all of her characters in this fictional world and I am sad to see them go.

Clare, you are amazing and I can’t wait to see where you take us next!!!

Epic Conclusion to Beneath Black Sails series

Sea Witch...Fae Touched...Wild Hunt...

Duty...Honor...Fear...Faith...Friendships...Self-Blame...Ifs...Shared Responsibility...Inevitable Love...
Linked Magic...Bonded...Healing of Mind & Body...Glimmer of Hope...New Home (Safe Haven/Sanctuary)...Queen of my Heart...My Anchor...LIVE...

Vee and Knigh face their final challenges and overcome many obstacles to find themselves at the end of their long journey. The characters are well-developed and continue to show growth and change with each book. The world-building imagery is perfect, filled with eye-catching details. My emotions took a roller coaster ride during this book, and I loved every minute of it!

"We do not submit." "No ocean too wide. No cost too high. No risk too great."
"I'll always come for you." "Until then." "After everything, how can he not be?"
"Only you. Always you." "Always." "Today. Tomorrow. Always."

Wonderful Ending

I’m sad to see this series end while also being thoroughly pleased by the ending. Vice and Knigh are characters dear to my heart and I loved going on their adventures. The slow progression of their relationship was wonderful to witness. I also liked that they had individual character growth as well. While the two main characters were good I also liked a few of the side characters. Anyone else #TeamKraken? Overall this was an enjoyable end to an epic adventure!
