El trabajo de una noche oscura
Hamley es un pequeño pueblo donde Edward Wilkins ejerce como abogado, al igual que hizo su padre antes que él. Elinor Wilkes seems to have an enchanted life. Her father is a prosperous attorney and he dotes on her as his only surviving child, his wife also being deceased. She meets, through her vicar, a young man, Ralph Corbett, and becomes engaged. Her happiness seems assured, then, with the events of one fateful night, everything falls apart. Elinor must shoulder the weight of a secret she should never have shared in, and it affects her life in every regard.
This story is fast-paced, the heroine well-drawn and believable, and the writing superb. Portions were predictable, but that detracted neither from the story nor my enjoyment of it. I am a fan of Victorian literature and Elizabeth Gaskell has become a favorite over the years. I hope to eventually read all her novels and short stories, and this checks another off my list.

This was an real treat to discover - a truly brilliant Elizabeth Gaskell novella that, while short, beats many of her longer novels for me. It is a fascinating tale of morality and guilt, of family and love and loyalty. Absolutely worth a read.

*El trabajo de una noche oscura* de Elizabeth Gaskell es una de esas pequeñas joyas literarias que demuestran que no hace falta extensión para dejar una huella profunda. A simple vista, la historia parte de una premisa sencilla: la hija de un abogado acaudalado, con un futuro aparentemente asegurado y un compromiso con un hombre de buena posición. Sin embargo, una noche un suceso inesperado cambia por completo el rumbo de su vida. (Y es que la vida es así, a veces, algo irremisible pasa y tu vida continua).
Lo que más destaca de esta obra es la fuerza emocional con que Gaskell retrata la fragilidad y la resiliencia humana. La protagonista no es solo un personaje bien construido, sino una figura en la que es fácil verse reflejado: alguien que enfrenta lo imprevisible con dolor, dignidad y una silenciosa valentía.

I find it amusing when I add a particular author (and seemingly all of their works) to my list purely due to the authors name, and then years later I finally get the time to spend some time with one. This was my first Gaskell and I can confidently state that it will not be my last.
This is a fairly short read, and it probably could have been read in one sitting, but I feel a book like this needs to be read at a steady pace in order to appreciate the style. Gaskell writes wonderfully well, and her style reminds me a little of Thomas Hardy, creative, smooth and witful.
'A Dark Night's Work' is a slow burner, and while the reader enjoys meeting the characters that Gaskell skilfully introduces to us, we then experience the mystery surrounding the story, as well the fire and intensity that love contains at it's core. I thought the way she combined both was certainly very impressive.
The only issue I had with this book is the focus on one particular character and his line of work. I thought this was unnecessary and didn't really add anything notable to the story. Other than that, I'm thrilled to have read my first Gaskell!

What a wild ride! Elizabeth Gaskell is such a good writer. This is definitely more melodramatic than some of her novels but I think this would be a fun place to start with Gaskell. The story is compact and has plenty of twists and turns to keep you on the edge of your seat! I really enjoyed the complex relationships between various characters and the exploration of what it means to be faithful to another person. When is faithfulness to another person harmful and when is it an enriching commitment even when that faithfulness involves sacrifice and trials? There are some dear and lovable characters in this; I would even call some of them quietly heroic.

This was an entertaining read. It had a bit of a slow start while it introduced us to the characters, then you get knocked with something out of left field and the novel goes on with this event and how it effects the characters and how life goes on for them.
I thought the suspense good, the story wasn't overly contrived nor were the characters. It's not a long story and it stays mostly with the few main characters and their lives in and around each other, so its kept rather simple in that respect. All in all a good story I thought.

It is hard to review this story because it originally was serialized. And because of that there were plenty of repeats to keep new weekly readers of the story a prized of the story line.
If Gaskell had edited the story after the serialization, the narrative might have flowed better.

“Oh my God! one little hour ago I was innocent of this man’s blood!“
Thus speaks Edward Wilkins, a successful country lawyer, after he has struck down his business partner in a temper, thereby causing the man’s death. However, ill-luck will have it that his own daughter Ellinor, the only family member left to him after a series of blows of fate, becomes aware of this act of manslaughter and, together with a trusted family servant, helps her father get rid of the dead body.
What sounds like a melodrama, or the premise of a sensational novel, is, in fact, another instance of Elizabeth Gaskell’s skill as a writer of realistic fiction in which characters are complex and choices often influenced by multi-faceted factors. Apparently, it was Dickens, in whose magazine All the Year Round the short novel was published in 1863, who insisted that the word “dark” be included in the title A Dark Night’s Work and had his own way against the author, because he thought that “A Night’s Work” was not sensationalist enough. Still, Gaskell followed her own intentions when it came to organizing the plot and finding a narrative voice.
Many readers will probably be annoyed at the slow beginning of the story and ask themselves why we have to know about Mr. Wilkins’s relationship with his own father – who made his son take over his own law business instead of accepting the odds of a barrister’s career, but was indulgent to his son’s artistic inclinations in many other ways – or about the early years of Mr. Wilkins’s married life when it is, in fact, Ellinor who is the protagonist of the story. When you take one step backward, though, and look at the whole picture, you will realize that this way, Mr. Wilkins’s behaviour, and his later tragedy – his tendency to neglect his business, his foolish social ambitions and his drinking problem – become more easily understandable. And it is a study of characters, and of the consequences of their decisions that is at the heart of this novel, which also explains why Gaskell does not really care for an investigation into the crime.
Instead, the reader can experience how the three lives of the involuntary partners in crime are thwarted, how their common knowledge, shame, and remorse change their relationships with each other and cast a long, long shadow over the life of the once so high-spirited Ellinor, while they hurry her father into a relatively early grave and hold other horrors, yet, in store for the trusty Dixon. Gaskell once again struck me as an exceedingly skilful creator of human characters, and her way of telling her story – using panoramic and scenic presentation and covering a span of more than fifteen years – may not necessarily satisfy those who expect a “Dark Night’s Work” à la Collins or Le Fanu, but her style of writing makes the characters come to life and enables us to sympathize with them, for example when Mr. Wilkins realizes what he has done, or when Ellinor tries to comfort the aged Dixon. We can even understand, though probably not approve of, the change of mind that is undergone by the wordly and calculating Mr. Corbet, who exchanges his old love – fearing that it might compromise him – for a marriage to a haughty woman, which might prove helpful to his social ambitions but eventually deny domestic happiness to him.
In a way, Gaskell’s story even reminded me a bit of Thomas Hardy’s bleak tales of how Fate blindly strikes at mortals in a most wilful way, but in her case some of the characters, Mr. Wilkins and Mr. Corbet, especially, could have avoided their unhappiness if they had acted in different ways and not given in to their respective vices. This short novel was written in 1863 and is my first by Elizabeth Gaskell, so it took me several pages to adjust to the rhythm and prose of this one. Once I got the hang of it, I was hooked. The summary: One dark night's work forever changes the lives of all involved. You'll have to read this book to discover why.
But here's a little trivia for you: Gaskell originally titled this novel 'A Night's Work,' but Charles Dickens added 'Dark' to the title before publishing it serially in his magazine, 'All The Year Round.' Good call, Mr. Dickens, since this was indeed a dark night, and a very dark deed, one that made my jaw drop as it unfolded.
I read mostly classic literature in my late 20's and '30's, then veered off into contemporary fiction for years. I now find myself again enjoying the old stuff more than the new, mainly due to prose like this: "But in general he knew his place; as his place was held to be in that aristocratic county, and in those days. Nor let be supposed that he was in any way a toadeater. He respected himself too much for that." Toadeater??
I'll end this with a timely quote from Ms. Gaskell, circa 1863: "You must forgive him - there is great need for forgiveness in this world.” ~ Elinor

Aunque es una historia sencilla, previsible y a la que le sobran algunas páginas, ha conseguido entretenerme y sacarme de un bloqueo lector.
La historia trata sobre una joven y las consecuencias que va a tener en su vida un acontecimiento terrible.
Os la recomiendo si buscáis una lectura sin mayores pretensiones que las de pasar un buen rato.

Una sensation novel tipicamente gaskelliana, cioè poco sensazionale e molto umana e introspettiva, dove il male, sempre in agguato, che sopraggiunge e sconvolge la vita di un uomo debole ma integerrimo non ha connotazioni soprannaturali ma è un qualcosa che riguarda particolarmente i tormenti interiori, quella parte insondabile della sua psiche sconvolta da un tragico episodio che lascerà un segno indelebile non solo in lui ma in molti protagonisti di questa storia.
Interessantissima e accurata la prefazione nella quale scopriamo, tra le altre cose, l’ennesima diatriba tra Gaskell e Dickens sul titolo del racconto. L’insistenza del famoso scrittore sull’aggiunta di quel “buia”, aggettivo di grande suggestione che avrebbe sicuramente avuto più presa su un pubblico di lettori e amatori della tipica sensation novel che imperava in quel periodo (Collins e Braddon) e che la Gaskell detestava preferendo nn piegarsi alle mode e mantenendo una propria identità narrativa anche in un genere così popolare che aveva un grosso seguito.
Vinse naturalmente Dickens e Gaskell dovette piegarsi ancora una volta alla prepotenza di cotanto personaggio non tanto per sudditanza psicologica ma perché in fondo scrivere per lui aveva i suoi vantaggi, soprattutto economici, che le permettevano di realizzare i suoi viaggi sul Continente, conoscere nuova gente e anche allontanarsi per un po’ dal “grigiore” di Manchester.
Per questo racconto Gaskell trova ispirazione da un fatto realmente accaduto in quel di Knutsford, piccolo villaggio rurale della sua infanzia, dove si raccontava del un delitto di un uomo di legge e della sua sparizione, tema questo molto “sentito” dall’autrice che aveva perso un fratellastro in circostanza mai totalmente chiarite. Prosa come sempre limpida ed elegante, personaggi ben caratterizzati, soprattutto quelli maschili, che sembrano, specie nella prima parte, catturare di più l’attenzione del lettore ed uscire più vividi da queste belle pagine con tutte le loro sofferenze, desideri, tormenti, avidità, ambizioni, meschinità, rimorsi. I personaggi femminili rimangono più defilati e solo nella seconda parte acquistano vigore e carattere. Anche questo è un romanzo in parte sociale ma ben diverso dagli altri. Qui l’attenzione si focalizza su una ben definita classe sociale emergente, quella dei professionisti nell’ambito dell’avvocatura. Personaggi “borderline” a stretto contatto con gli ambienti più elevati ma in realtà non accettati dall’elite aristocratica.
E da questa frizione e contrasto e dal desiderio del protagonista, Edward Wilkins, di rompere questa barriera che s’innesca il dramma che lo porterà alla rovina e che avrà forti ripercussioni sulla vita della figlia e di un fedele servitore, “complici” e testimoni della sua tragedia umana...

“One minute of passion, and my life blasted!”
Have you ever had a nightmare wherein you did something terrible and knew it would ruin your life? That kind of in-the-heat-of-the-moment sin is what this story is about. Someone does something awful, which creates a “horrible tangle of events” that risks disgracing others, derailing their lives (e.g., planned marriage), and forcing them also to behave dishonestly.
“She had been all her life a truthful plain-spoken girl. She held herself high above deceit. Yet, here came the necessity for deceit—a snare spread around her."
Although this should be a suspenseful story, given its topic, it is not. The way it is written, even though a short novel, makes it seem long-winded. It meanders, it is not compelling, it is not a page-turner, and the characters are not drawn in a way that inspires much attachment to them. Too much time is focused on discussing a key character’s occupation (an attorney) and his attempts to gain social standing, to “push his way into the set above him” (e.g., by making false kinship claims). In other words, it is a “meh” novel. That said, it is easy to read.
A memorable quote:
“It is simple justice—justice to himself and to others—to see that villainy is so sufficiently punished as to deter others from entering upon such courses.”

Overall I think I prefer Gaskell's longer novels to her shorter works. As much as I loved some of the darker elements explored in this work, I was not invested in the characters and thought the plot was drawn out to the point of losing the suspense and tension of the story.

A really engrossing book
There is something truly gripping about this story.
Secrets and lies shatter a devoted young woman's future, and these dark secrets ruin her life and the lives of those she loves most. Struggling with the terrible knowledge of something that happened on one dark night, Ellinor, the main character, goes through so much, and her struggles and those of the people she loves most, are revealed in this truly riveting story.
I really enjoyed this book. It was my first time reading a book by this author. If you like tension and drama, then this book will definitely suit you.

This was a very nice tale about a young lady who is quite devoted to her father. She is practically blind to his faults. She falls in love with a rather cold hero. Delitto di una notte buia è un romanzo breve di Elizabeth Gaskell che fino a poco tempo fa era ancora inedito nel nostro paese. Pubblicato a puntate nel 1863 sulla rivista diretta da Dickens, “All the year around”, il romanzo si apre sul villaggio di Hamley, un piccolo borgo della campagna inglese, con i suoi piccoli borghesi e i proprietari terrieri, alcuni dei quali in ristrettezze economica.
Qui vivono Edward Wilkins, uno stimato avvocato che, come il padre prima di lui, si occupa di questioni legali e finanziarie della nobiltà locale formata da piccoli proprietari terrieri superbi e orgogliosi, e sua figlia Elinor rimasta orfana della madre in tenera età.
I due, dopo la morte della moglie/madre e della secondogenita, sono legati da un profondo affetto.
Edward Wilkins spera anzi ritiene di dover essere accolto tra la cerchia della piccola nobiltà che frequenta ma, nonostante sia più ricco dei suoi clienti, questo privilegio le viene negato. Inizia così ad ostentare la sua ricchezza, fatta di lussi, raffinatezze, eccessi e vanità; per farsi aiutare nella gestione dei suoi affari e per avere più tempo per i suoi svaghi, l'avvocato Wilkins assume Mr. Dunster. Per tutta la prima parte del libro seguiamo la vita e le vicende di questa piccola felice famiglia formata da padre e figlia su cui, tuttavia, sembra aleggiare il presagio di un futuro nefasto.
Al centro della narrazione l'autrice non pone il delitto citato nel titolo o investigazioni, misteri ed eventi soprannaturali presenti in ogni sensation – novel che si rispetti, ma si concentra sul rimorso, sui tormenti interiori che lacerano l'animo dei protagonisti, coinvolti in un tragico episodio accaduto in una notte buia, che sconvolgerà e influenzerà le loro vite, e lascerà un segno indelebile in ognuno di loro. La scrittrice inglese in questo romanzo accompagna il lettore negli anfratti più oscuri della mente umana e cerca di focalizzarne l'attenzione sulle ripercussioni psicologiche che un'azione avventata avvenuta in una notte qualsiasi ha su coloro che ne sono rimasti coinvolti. Questi non sono esseri crudeli ma persone comuni, anzi delle “brave persone”, che però non vengono risparmiate dal peccato e riusciranno a trovare sollievo solo quando la verità verrà a galla, mettendo fine ad anni di rimorsi e riserbo.
Delitto di una notte buia è una novella tipicamente gaskelliana, cioè poco “sensazionale” e molto umana; dalla scrittura elegante, dal ritmo perfetto e scorrevole, dalla prosa limpida e coinvolgente, con personaggi caratterizzati molto bene (quelli maschili soprattutto nella prima parte, mentre quelli femminili nella seconda) che man mano che prosegue la narrazione acquistano vigore e profondità, riuscendo ad emergere dalle pagine con le loro sofferenze, desideri, tormenti, avidità, ambizioni, meschinità e rimorsi.
Edward Wilkins è uno stimato avvocato, dotato di grande capacità oratoria e brillante intelligenza che, nonostante abbia studiato nelle migliori scuole e possieda un'ingente ricchezza, viene solo “tollerato” dalla nobiltà locale tra cui si trova a vivere. Il suo desiderio è essere accettato tra i signorotti locali, clienti del suo studio ed entrare così a far parte di questa cerchia ristretta. Sentendo il peso del fallimento, Edward Wilkins ostenta la sua ricchezza e arriva a sperperare il suo patrimonio, frutto anche del lavoro dei suoi avi, fino a scivolare inesorabilmente nell'ozio e nel baratro del vizio dell'alcol. Dopo l'omicidio è più che mai dedito all'alcol e sopraffatto dal rimorso si avvia verso l'autodistruzione.
Coinvolti nella terribile vicenda insieme a Mr. Wilkins vi sono la figlia Elinor e il fedele stalliere Dixon.
Elinor Wilkins è una giovane ragazza bella, dolce, gentile, leale e onesta, forse un po' troppo passiva e accecata dall'amore per il genitore, cui la vita sembrava sorriderle. Elinor, infatti, a causa della sua cecità e della sua assoluta fedeltà nei confronti del padre, paga un prezzo molto alto per il suo coinvolgimento nella vicenda; sfiorisce repentinamente ed è costretta a rinunciare alla sua giovinezza; per colpa del troppo amore nei confronti del padre, giustifica sempre tutto e non vede le cose per come stanno tanto veramente, tanto da considerare un assassinio solo un semplice incidente.
Il lettore non può fare a meno di seguire i suoi tormenti interiori, di gioire e soffrire con lei; segue con grande partecipazione durante tutta la narrazione il modo in cui questa ragazza riesce a superare situazioni drammatiche, ostacoli e vicissitudini della vita.
Quella terribile notte non solo riesce a rovinare la vita della ragazza che fino ad allora sembra perfetta e felice, ma anche il rapporto tra Elinor e Ralph Conbert. Ralph è il rampollo di una famiglia altolocata, e come figlio cadetto ha poche possibilità di eredità; per questo si butta a capofitto nella carriera di avvocato e diventare un alto esponente della magistratura.
Un ragazzo egoista, egocentrico, brillante e ambizioso che pensa che un matrimonio sbagliato possa compromettere la sua carriera e condizionare in negativo il suo futuro; infatti, per riuscire a realizzare il suo sogno non esiterà a sacrificare Elinor, rompendo il loro fidanzamento e rinunciando ad un amore puro e disinteressato.
A completare la galleria dei personaggi troviamo: i devoti Dixon, stalliere della famiglia Wilkins e amico di Edward Wilkins sin dall'infanzia; e Miss Monro, istitutrice di Elinor e suo punto di riferimento nei momenti più bui; poi troviamo Herbert Livingstone, giovane curato posato, gentile e socievole da sempre innamorato di Elinor; ed infine Mr Dunster, uomo serio ed estremamente professionale, che da semplice impiegato diventa socio di Mr Wilkins
Caduto ingiustamente nell'oblio, questa fine indagine psicologica dalla forte carica emotiva (in cui non manca la denuncia sociale nei confronti della società dell'epoca in merito alla rigida divisione in classi sociali) è forse uno dei romanzi brevi più belli della scrittrice inglese; scorrevole, coinvolgente, intenso, ben scritto, riesce a farti trattenere il fiato, a sentire la tensione e l'inquietudine per tutta la durata della narrazione in attesa di sapere cosa accadrà ai personaggi e se il delitto celato per anni potrà essere scoperto da un momento all'altro.
Aggiungo solo un'ultima cosa: ho trovato molto interessante la prefazione di Francesco Marroni (da leggere a lettura terminata, mi raccomando) in cui veniamo a conoscenza del rapporto di odio e amore tra Dickens e la Gaskell e la diatriba scatenatasi tra loro per il titolo di questo romanzo.

Mr Wilkins era il più importante avvocato di Hamley, il figlio Edward suo socio e degno erede. Dal matrimonio di Edward nasce Ellinor che, rimasta orfana di madre in giovane età, si lega indissolubilmente al padre e alla sua istitutrice Miss Monro.
Delitto in una notte buia, etichettato come romanzo breve, che tanto breve non è, deve il suo titolo all'intromissione di Dickens che volle aggiungere "buia" per creare un'aspettativa gotica e sensazionalistica nel lettore.
Sembra che la Gaskell non fosse d'accordo e volesse un più sobrio "Delitto di una notte" così come priva di espedienti acchiappa-lettori era la sua storia.
Sempre molto razionale, elabora qui le vicende di una famiglia, tutto sommato per bene, che si vede costretta ad affrontare e nascondere un delitto avvenuto durante una infausta notte.
Ciò che le interessa, non sono le dinamiche dell'omicidio, ma le conseguenze sulle persone coinvolte.
La morte colpisce tutti i presenti in quella stanza, il lento degrado, già iniziato in Mr Wilkins, trova quella notte un punto di svolta che lo fa scivolare sempre più nel rimorso della propria coscienza.
La vita procede, ma non più come prima, mai più simile a quando il peso di un tale segreto si poteva solo immaginare.
È un lento cammino verso la perdita di tutte le certezze, l'armonia, la salute e l'agiatezza, perdite che Ellinor accoglie come una punizione più che giusta.
La redenzione finale può giungere solo dopo aver affrontato vari stadi di sofferenza e mortificazione, anche qui senza eventi ecclatanti, senza grandi drammi, come se la realtà non fosse già abbastanza drammatica.
...così come, è vero, (il dolore) si sta avvicinando a tutti noi in questo preciso momento; tu, lettore, e io, scrittrice, abbiamo un grande dolore che incombe su di noi. Può trovarsi oltre il punto più fioco del nostro orizzonte, ma nel silenzio della notte il nostro cuore trema e si ritrae al suono del suo passo che si approssima. Fortunati coloro che cadono nelle mani del Signore prima che in quelle degli uomini; ma il destino peggiore è di colui che deve mescolare, nel calice tesogli dal fato, il fiele del rimorso.

My life has been so crazy lately, this book took me way too long to read for being only 100+ pages! (It felt longer reading it on my Kindle for some reason....)
Also, it took me a little bit to get into it, but I'm glad I persevered in the end. The first third I found a little confusing and the narration choppy. That might have been just me being distractable, but I had a hard time with it. Once I got into the real meat of the story, though, it flowed better for me and I was able to track pretty well.
🌃Our main character is a virtuous heroine type whose major flaw is a sympathetic one. She happens to be witness to a man's death at the hands of another man, but she helps to conceal the killing due to her relationship with the killer. (It was not an intentional murder, more of a manslaughter sort of situation.)
🌃That being the main plot, this book deals extensively with the repercussions of unconfessed sin and secrets and how they affect people. All three people involved in the crime have to deal with the consequences of their guilt and the secret they're keeping in various ways, and none of them escape unscathed.
🌃There is also an exploration of what it looks like to love someone even if/when they are guilty of a serious and grave sin or crime. I don't think any character in the book is represented as loving that person well, although a case could be made that Gaskell is presenting our heroine's approach as the best (willingly concealing). I don't know, though, because she suffers greatly.
🌃I take that back - as I think about it, there is one character who chooses to love well, but unfortunately, he's not given the chance to demonstrate that in the crucial moment when it would have been most helpful. Along with this character is a gentle love story that is many years in the development.
🌃Overall, a lot packed into a short book. Not Gaskell's best, I wouldn't say, but certainly worth reading, if only because of the incredibly unique storyline and characters.

This confirms for me that Gaskell’s sweet spot is novella-length fiction.
Other than Mary Barton (which I really liked), I have a history of difficulty finishing her long-form novels. And my enjoyment of her short stories has been uneven. But boy, her novellas have consistently been my happy place!
A Dark Night’s Work is the history of one family, and a crime that is ultimately kept secret by three of the characters. It is, in large part, a psychological study, concerned with the effects of guilt and deception. Themes of morality, loyalty, honor, and self-interest are also explored.
The crime in question could have made this story veer into Gothic territory or become sensation fiction, but Gaskell isn’t interested in shocking or spooking you. This gentlest of all Victorian authors, here once again, narrates her story with admirable equanimity, all while conveying believable compassion for her characters. Gaskell invites us to look at them, their circumstances, and their choices; somehow reminding us that we humans are but weak creatures, that our frames are dust.
While this book isn’t quite as perfect as Cousin Phillis or The Moorland Cottage, it comes close, and gets catalogued for me as another enjoyable experience with Gaskell’s wonderful writing.

Mi primer acercamiento a Gaskell venía marcado por la curiosidad de descubrir a una de las grandes autoras clásicas, en una historia con marcados tintes góticos y victorianos y reminiscencias a Wilkie Collins, uno de mis autores predilectos.
El trabajo de una noche oscura, novela escrita en 1863 e inédita en castellano, que podemos ahora disfrutar de manos de @librosdesedaeditorial, ha sido una lectura agradable, sosegada y tranquila, que nos acerca la historia de Elionor Wilkins, una joven huérfana de madre, que convive con su padre, rico abogado rural encargado de los asuntos de la clase alta. El señor Wilkins, a pesar de su carácter bondadoso y amoroso, encauza sus días en una vida de excesos y apariencia, pretendiendo formar parte de una clase social más elevada, que lo desprecia. Pero una noche oscura, aquella que da título a la novela, unos imprevisibles acontecimientos se desencadenarán, transformando la vida del incauto abogado y arrasando a su paso con la de Elionor y su prometido.
Esta novela corta, que según dicen cautivó al propio Dickens, nos muestra el cómo nuestras acciones transforman vidas, cómo los sucesos azarosos arrasan existencias y el cómo no siempre los buenos sentimientos y la bondad son el aliciente suficiente para vivir en paz y serenidad. El trabajo de una noche oscura, es una novela lenta, de personajes, de sentimientos, con fuertes matices éticos y moralistas combinados con una feroz crítica social al clasismo imperante y al papel de la mujer. Una novela, que sin embargo, me ha resultado un poco descafeinada en su trama, que pudo quizá, sacar más jugo a la historia y al componente oscuro y tétrico de la narración, creando un agradable thriller victoriano. Sin embargo, como obra menor de la autora, he quedado cautivada por el estilo y su narrativa, las páginas se devoran y se disfrutan contagiando a la trama de su belleza.
Un primer acercamiento a Gaskell que lo único que ha conseguido es dejarme con ganas de más.

El señor Wilkins, a pesar de su carácter bondadoso y amoroso, encauza sus días en una vida de excesos y apariencia, pretendiendo formar parte de una clase social más elevada, que lo desprecia. Pero una noche oscura, aquella que da título a la novela, unos imprevisibles acontecimientos se desencadenarán, transformando la vida del incauto abogado y arrasando a su paso con la de Elionor y su prometido.
Esta novela corta, que según dicen cautivó al propio Dickens, nos muestra el cómo nuestras acciones transforman vidas, cómo los sucesos azarosos arrasan existencias y el cómo no siempre los buenos sentimientos y la bondad son el aliciente suficiente para vivir en paz y serenidad. El trabajo de una noche oscura, es una novela lenta, de personajes, de sentimientos, con fuertes matices éticos y moralistas combinados con una feroz crítica social al clasismo imperante y al papel de la mujer. Una novela, que sin embargo, me ha resultado un poco descafeinada en su trama, que pudo quizá, sacar más jugo a la historia y al componente oscuro y tétrico de la narración, creando un agradable thriller victoriano. Sin embargo, como obra menor de la autora, he quedado cautivada por el estilo y su narrativa, las páginas se devoran y se disfrutan contagiando a la trama de su belleza.
Un primer acercamiento a Gaskell que lo único que ha conseguido es dejarme con ganas de más.

No es un relato clásico por sí, es un drama sobre lo fatídico, la culpa y las consecuencias, bien llevado y muy del gusto de la época.

"Aquella no era una situación satisfactoria. El señor Wilkins le había proporcionado a su hijo una educación y unos gustos por encima de su posición. No redundaba en su beneficio o su placer relacionarse con el médico o el cervecero de Hamley, el pastor era viejo y estaba sordo y el coadjutor era un joven inocente que se asustaba de su propia voz.
En cuanto al matrimonio, dado que la idea de casarse apenas estaba en la mente de Edward más presente que en la de su padre, no deseaba llevar a una de las jovencitas de Hamley a casa, a aquella mansión elegante llena de cosas que sugerían y se asociaban con una persona de gran educación y que resultaba una morada inapropiada para una chica ignorante, tosca y maleducada. Sin embargo, al contrario que su afectuoso padre, Edward era plenamente consciente de que todas las jóvenes damas que se alegraban de tenerlo como pareja de baile en los bailes de Hamley se habrían tomado como una afrenta recibir una proposición de matrimonio de un abogado, hijo y nieto de abogados".
El trabajo de una noche oscura no es el mejor libro de Elizabeth Gaskell. Parece un crossover entre Gaskell y Wilkie Collins pero en corto. Aún así, te lo bebes en dos días porque la Gaskell te entretiene lo más grande, de cualquier cosa te hace una historia con su moraleja, su dosis de clasismo y sus buenas mansiones victorianas.
Aunque lo que le pasa a la pobre Ellinor, hija de un abogado que se cree más importante de lo que es y al que le gusta empinar el codo cosa mala, sin madre, con un novio arribista y una institutriz como única compañía sensata, no es cualquier cosa. El trabajo de una noche oscura nos habla de un secreto que se arrastra durante años y que destruye todo lo bueno que había en la vida de las personas que lo guardan.
Sólo un apunte, Gaskell, querida, te podrías haber ahorrado una frase racista que hace que quieras tirar el libro por la ventana. Está tan al final que ya pasas por encima de ella y sigues, no sin acordarte primero de Doña Elizabeth, de su padre, de su madre y de toda su parentela.
"Es que es la época" dirán algunos. Me da igual.

When Elinor became of age, she was ready to marry her first love Ralph Colbert, and being the only child of a respected attorney, who came from a respected family, she was bound to inherit her family's fortune, which would provide for her marriage. But with the possibility of disgrace, there looms the threat that the love between the young couple may not stand the test. Will Elinor sacrifice her love to maintain the honor of her father of whom she has very high esteem?
Characters:
It is sufficient to say that Elinor definitely has the strongest character in the novel. Her character develops so much from the delicate young lady to an adult woman who is able to bare the burden of keeping a tiresome secret in order not to disgrace her father.
Ralph Colbert on the other hand proved to be a much weaker person, and someone whose opinion can be easily affected by the different situations.
What I liked about the book:
The way Gaskell proved that a single night can change the course of lives of many people from a peaceful life one full of suffering and guilt.
The strongest point of the novel was honestly the development that takes place in Elinor's character.
What I didn't like:
Gosh this was a perfect definition of a slow burn. It took so long for the story to reach the main point and that's why it took me so long to read this novel.
Overall, I really enjoyed this novel and the prospect of reading about a heroine who had a strong character and sound judgement.

4.5 stars - After a slow, overly-detailed beginning to this novella, I was hooked for the 2nd half of the book. I love Elizabeth Gaskell's writing! Thought-provoking story (from 1863) about the consequences of our choices and loyalty to those we love. This was written in serial form for a periodical published by Charles Dickens.
"You must forgive him - there is great need for forgiveness in this world."
"He sighed a little regretfully as Ellinor went away. He had obtained the position he had struggled for, and sacrificed for; but now he could not help wishing that the slaughtered creature laid on the shrine of his ambition were alive again." (I love her way with words!)

Ellinor Wilkins jest typową przedstawicielką swojej epoki - dobrze wychowana panna, której głównym celem jest korzystne zamążpójście. Wykonywanie planu szło dziewczynie nie najgorzej, aż do pewnej koszmarnej nocy, która trochę jej w życiu namiesza.
Wiktoriańskie rytuały godowe nie wywołują mojego zachwytu, umówmy się - targi o posag wykluczają romantyczność. Postać pana Wilkinsa wzbudza we mnie tylko złość, a ślepe oddanie Ellinor momentami irytuje. Młody Corbet również nie posiada zbyt wiele cech charakteru, za które można by go cenić. Mimo to "Koszmar jednej nocy" w ostatecznym rozrachunku pozytywnie mnie zaskoczył. Spodziewałam się innego zakończenia, plus dla pani Gaskell.

I love finding new public domain books to read. I enjoyed Gaskell's more well known books quite a bit. This one was a bit slow. And it makes me want to take all 19th century women by the shoulders and give them a good shake, say STOP FAINTING, life is hard, get over it!!! Right in their faces until they get a backbone. I liked the character for the most part, even if it was a bit slow in parts.

Elizabeth Gaskell is superb at writing about the psychological effects of negative life choices - how they haunt and dog us. In this short novel, through anger and drunkenness, a murder is committed that is hurriedly covered up under cover of darkness. The effects of this night's work haunt the main character her entire life and are only resolved when the truth is eventually revealed.
