Psychotherapist Victoria Adler is introduced to a spooky reading circle at her newest client’s estate. Every Wednesday evening, the classics and the latest bestsellers of the paranormal genre are read together—but then a guest of the club suddenly dies under the strangest circumstances. One could almost think he’d fallen victim to a deadly spell, just like in the old horror stories. Athos and Pearl are once again in demand as four-pawed detectives, before another two-legged loses his life….
The plot was great, but again, as in past books some of the characters reactions to dangers was just too stupid to believe . However this did make the plot work. And the bad guys was really bad.
When Victoria Adler travels to meet and stay with one of her clients who is suffering from delusions of course she brings along her two companions, Athos the malamute and Pearl, the adorable cat. Staying in a secluded gothic castle could give anyone nightmares but when people start turning up dead maybe the threat is more real than Victoria first thought. Once again Athos and Pearl will have to solve the mystery and save the day all while trying to train Victoria to be a sleuth.
ALEX WAGNER PROVES ONCE AGAIN THAT A COZY DOESN'T NEED TO BE OVER 300 PAGES TO BE SO VERY ENTERTAINING!!!
SERIES PREMISE: In this series we follow Athos, an Alaskan Malamut and his fried Pearl, a tiny white kitten, as they do all they can to protect their 'two-legged' being, Victoria. In this Book: Victoria goes to visit a former client who has become deathly ill at her former husbands estate, a grand castle. However, when Athos and Pearl arrive at the castle, it gives off very spooky gothic vibes. Then suddenly, the medical doctor Rolf Bachmann is found murdered and Victoria's former client claims to see Vampires, Ghosts and Werewolves, all connecting to books that The Wednesday Evening Club have been reading. So what truly is going on here? Athos and Pearl will need to dig hard to discover all the secrets that lie within the castle before it's too late.
THOUGHTS: Praise to Alex Wagner on yet another amazing book in this series! I am so glad I came across it randomly because, so far, it truly has not let me down. I love following Athos, a dog as opposed to a human, along-side Pearl the kitten as it ensures the mystery needs to be worked out in ways that favor animals as opposed to humans. Granted there are both advantages and disadvantages to having Athos and his side kick Pearl solving the mysteries, but it's always entertaining. Speaking of mysteries, this one was amazing! There was so much to discover with the castle, the humans that lived in it and the reasons behind the murders. Truly an enjoyable read and I am looking forward to reading book 4!
Well, the ghost business didn't go the way I thought it was going to. I thought it was going to be fake, with someone projecting images. But then to make it real but never tell us her name & story?! Disappointing, to say the least! All those tantalizing pieces: she's a kid, always on the fringes, only photographed twice, & Juno was starting to read the family diaries...& then to just drop it & never tell us?! That stank.
The bit where Athos found the Dr's body--why didn't he just bark his head off til someone came to find out why?!
I listened to the audiobook, & this reader was ok for some voices, but not others. He made Juno sound like a cartoon character. And Victoria sounded like a 50+-year-old snobby Society lady. (How old is she supposed to be?)
The part where Athos & the cat heard the wolf howls & they weren't making any sense was fun.
There were times when the plot & explanations made me think this was a story for middle schoolers. Just eliminate the word "hell", & it could be.
The author's fondness for the word "opined" seems a bit pretentious, but that's minor.
The animals were the best part of the story. It didn't feel like there was a lot of detective work by anybody, tho. They just guarded the 2 people they thought were most at risk & got lucky. And then the killer conveniently spills his guts to the police?!

I would really like to give this book minus 5 stars for it's portrayal of pedophilia as OK. I am not OK with a 30 year old man having a serious romantic relationship with a 15 year old child! Maybe in Europe it's OK, but in the USA it's considered a crime. Yet in this book, only the tutor and an aunt saw it as a problem, and the aunt's main concern was not the age difference so much as the fact that auntie dearest would lose control of the trust fund. Her mother encouraged her to marry him as soon as she turned 16 in order to get access to her trust fund. The psychologist turned a blind eye to both the pedophilia and a possible murder.
Even though I liked the first two books in this series, I'm done with it! And for any teens who may be reading it now, NO! A love relationship between a 15 year old child and a 30 year old man is NOT NORMAL! And 16 is far too young to be tied down to a marriage.
Athos and Pearl go with Victoria to the Alps. Victoria is there at the request of her friend and former patient, Diana, who is suffering from hallucinations and alcohol addiction. But is she really hallucinating, or is something more nefarious going on? Athos and Pearl are on the job, but will they be able to figure this out? This has tons of twists and turns with a very diabolical bad guy!
The pace is fast And the tone is uncertain with an action and character oriented storyline. The characters are vivid and endearing. This is a great mystery series with super animal detectives. Read these stories in order and enjoy!
This series continues to charm. Athos, our Alaskan malamute who gets sad when people say he's fat (his fur is just thick!), solves murders with Pearl, a "half-portion of cat" with the personality of a "royal tigress." The two play off of each other in an occasionally snarky but mostly lovingly rapscallion-like way. The mysteries are mostly bloodless and the plots are well-crafted.
The people met every Wednesday to read horror stories. In this book the characters were well written so as to keep guessing which one would be our villain. And the setting was as scary as one of those Wednesday night stories.
This is a fun series with an pair of competent but full of themselves dog and cat who make pretty good detectives with all the expected sniping between a dog and cat. They're also training their 2 leg(human) to join them in their detecting.
Victoria Athos and Pearl take a trip to Northern Italy to visit and counsel Diana. The place is a castle made for spooky ghosts and werewolves. Two residents are murdered and the trio start investigating, and Victoria is pushed down the stairs. Excellent story
