Nana & Kaoru, Volume 3

Rate this book
After staying out in the cold for New Years, Nana is gravely ill and alone. Her mother is a part of the police force and is rarely home, so she is left up to her own devices having to take care of herself. But her situation is quite serious and even a house call from a local doctor may not suffice. It will be up to Kaoru and Tachi to help her in this time of need. But their methods may be a little more "hands on" than what may be considered normal. They are going to have to support her from the bottom up.

This is an interesting series. The art and scenes are erotic and titillating (obviously). BDSM practices, explanation, and appeal is analyzed through the lens of our characters, guided by the informative offerings of a sex shop owner. I think these books are fun on one hand for the above reasons, but I stopped reading with this volume and I think the main reasons are rooted in philosophy and the characteristics of the main characters.

The philosophy of the Marquis DeSade, which is at the core of much (but certainly not all aspects here) is a fundamentally materialist one. This is even explicitly stated by the aforementioned sex shop owner where she encourages one of our main characters to view his partner as "nothing more than a lump of flesh" in the context of their sessions. I see this as a fundamentally flawed philosophy. Employing the extreme spaces of BDSM as a means to transcend limitations and boundaries or to enter liminal psych-sexual states for reasons of arousal, experience, and exploration are all valid contextualizations of BDSM for those so inclined, in my estimation. But taking the draw of materialism as a goal or a fundamental truth diverts one from the reality and in my mind this is the potential flaw for those interested in these topics.

I think these are probably better reference books than good narrative books at the end of the day, and that's probably where I'll land with this series in my collection.

Uh.. some of the kinks are extremely off putting… only reason it’s 4 ⭐️’s is because of the ending scene

The jelly trope sometimes isn't my thing, but the one between Nana and Taichi seems so innocent. Again, communication needs to happen much more between the three main characters.

The continuation of the greatest fetish manga of all time with a last page cliffhanger for the ages. I’m not going to spoil it for everyone but WOW, just crazy. Boy, it does make you want to GO and get the next volume immediately. If you’ve read this manga this far, then plunk down that coin and buy volume 4 why don’t you!
