HER GRACE

Rate this book
When Penn refuses to marry, her father sends her to work as a lady's maid for the king's niece. Resigned to a life of frivolous gossip and needlework, Penn is shocked when she meets the tumultuous Lady Lovetta. Together, they uncover a treasonous plot to alter the line of succession and start a war with Azor, the birthplace of Lovetta's beloved deceased mother. As unrest looms, tensions rise in the Kingdoms, and Penn and Lovetta grow closer, building a tension of their own. Penn will do anything to keep Lovetta safe from the men hunting her blood, even if that means abandoning the lives they know and never looking back.

I’m claiming my place as president of the heather fanclub, I’d commit crimes for my favourite goblin child 🥳 This story is beutifully written and has such rich imagery woven in amongst a well-paced plot, it was truly enjoyable to read!

Hoyer's use of prose and imagery hooked me in and before I knew it I was on the last page, eagerly awaiting the next installment. The nods to Japanese culture is a treat - from the map to the plum wine - if you ever get the chance to try plum wine, the taste is exactly how Hoyer has described it!

Without giving too much away, I am fan of the main characters - Penn and Lovetta and their slow-burn romance. In addition, their strengths and failings which is a testament to Hoyer's writing.
Hoyer is able to capture the struggle of following your hearts desire against what is expected of women under the medieval society, as well as working towards change.

Awaiting the sequel to Her Grace with bated breath. Curling up with this book was like feeding golden honey elixir to my inner child, it was so healing to relish in the queer fantasy fiction I dreamt of as a teenager, but still so thoroughly enjoyed as a near 30 year old.
Written beautifully, with beautiful imagery and a storyline that kept up pace so that it had me struggling to put down the book, even for food. I read through this book with a hunger almost as strong as Lovetta's appetite for women (I prefer both garlic and ginger). S. R. Hoyer, I can't wait to see where you, Penn and the Bondeville family take us next.
