This supernatural thriller is about two sisters who encounter a vengeful spirit after discovering an old diary in the attic of their new home.
After the death of her parents, Maya and her sister Andrea, a famous horror author, move from Boston to Salem, Massachusetts. In their new home, weird things begin to happen. Doors open by themselves. There is a feeling that someone is always watching, and Maya keeps drawing and dreaming about a dark-haired Puritan girl.
But the biggest change is Andrea. She isn't like herself anymore, and she constantly reads from an old diary that she found in the attic. And sometimes her brown eyes go blue.
Maya wants to think that the weird stuff that she has been seeing is just a manifestation of her grief, but she soon realizes that something evil has awakened in her home and that something wants revenge. Maya knows that the only way to stop this evil from permanently residing in her sister is to investigate the home's history. Teaming up with the school's outcast, Maya discovers the truth behind the haunting and learns of the terrible secrets that lie within the diary's pages. But will she be able to stop this new Andrea from enacting her revenge, or will it be too late?
Very hard to get through. I had almost stopped reading entirely. Too much redundancy in some sentences. It felt like certain details were either rushed or missing. This book felt more like a detailed secondary outline about ready to go into the rough draft stage. The ending was predictable, the relationships were flat and rushed, and the conflicts between characters was forced and ill developed.
The acknowledgments/author comments at the end indicate this is only the authors second book. I do hope the author keeps trying and perhaps gets a better editor. (Gotta start somewhere, right?)
I love the premise of the story, really fun & with some creepy elements! The history of Salem is so interesting, I'm glad to see it in this new book. Well done!
I was hooked from the first few pages!! I read this book quickly because I couldn't put it down!! Definitely a good read and I loved the history involved with the story!
The story itself was okay. It was a good, common ghost/possession with the main character facing the challenges of dealing with that scenario. The writing style left something to be desired. Very child-like writing style with choppy sentences and a “start and stop” throughout process. This slowed the reading down a lot, but it was so bad that I DNFed.
Idk how this has over 4 stars the story is SO BORING page after page of “you moved into that spooky house?”
And horrible writing like “the gas station attendant attended to me” or “I couldn’t shake this feeling that I was feeling”. That’s actually middle school lever writing.
