A doctor, a witch goddess, and the Four Horseman of the Apocalypse walk into a bar…
Meet Erin Kelly. You can call her Doc.
Yes, she’s a doctor. A cardiothoracic surgeon from Boston, to be precise.
She’s also the cursed descendant of an ancient witch goddess who’s destined to stop the Four Horseman of the Apocalypse from monkey-stomping humanity into a primordial puddle.
How Doc’s supposed to do that exactly is a bit of mystery—especially to her.
No worries, though. She’ll figure it out. Right after she tracks down her aforementioned arcane ancestor. There’s just one small wrinkle—she’s not been seen in a thousand years. Maybe two.
Regardless, Doc and her impromptu coven of witches, prophets, angels, snarky hellhounds, and the occasional giant or two better hurry. The Horsemen are on the hunt. And the end times are nigh.
Good thing Purgatory’s nice this time of year, huh?
Harbinger's Hex by Steve Gilmore This is the first book in a series. The way the book ended implied another book to come and I can hardly wait. This was terrific! An excellent fantasy with the Gilmore humor! I giggled and laughed off and on throughout the book! The subject was a couple of women and one guy trying to save the world. They battle all types of beings along the way. I love how the author was able to throw so much humor into a "serious" subject. There was plenty of action and battles. A fun read but ended in less than finished but not quite a cliffhanger.
Fun perspective from the female heroines in the books! It also gave us more of a view of the Land of Nod and the creatures within, which was a fun adventure.
I find Erin, our lead character, to be adopting more of the attitudes/demeanor of Dean (the hero in the initiating series), which feels like a bit of a jolt. From book one of the originals, I didn't have her pegged as mouthy and snarky to the level she's become, but I guess fighting apocalypses all the time can do that to a person?!
One note to the author, who I must be enjoying his work, since I've read just about all of his books, if I see another "icy stare" at Chad... or anyone that annoys the team... I'm going to ignore it. There has to be another way to convey that feeling?! Otherwise, I'm enjoying these books... it's my guilty pleasure.
Urban Fantasy at its Best!! Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on May 9, 2023 From the back alleys of Boston to the depth of Purgatory (aka - Land of Nod) & beyond, this story had it all. Witch goddesses, apocalyptic deities, seers, dragons, hellhounds (oddly likeable), and most importantly - Erin 'Doc' Kelly & her golden armor. I loved her in the other series, and grew to love her even more the moment I started reading this book. I literally could NOT put it down! Chock-full of laugh-out-loud dialogue & endearing characters, the pure adventure (as Doc found herself winding through the nether regions of reality) was truly phenomenal. This novel was superbly entertaining from start to finish. I look forward to reading more from the author - well done Steve Gilmore! Harbinger's Hex is LEGIT!!
Another great book by Steve Gilmore! The "Heavans Dark Soldiers" was fantastic and I wS extremely excited to read this book to find out what happened to Doc during the times she was not in the first series. Great reading another great cast of characters by the author! I would recommend this book to everyone!, but I would suggest reading the "Heavan's Dark Soldiers" series first so this one ,akes since to you!
Steve again slays it with humor, action and history. Blending biblical references with dark humor, tons of action, and descriptive fantastical landscapes, Gilmore covers all the bases!
I love it: storyline, unique characters and the witty banter
After the unique personality of Dean, I wasn't sure Doc would be as fun. Obviously, she is because I couldn't stop reading. I can't wait for the next book!
