Shadowvale #6

Monster in the Mirror

Rate this book
Shadowvale isn’t your typical small town America. The sun never shines, the gates decide who enters, magic abounds, and every resident bears some kind of curse.

For Isadora Graham, Shadowvale seems like a dream come true. A safe haven where she can hide from the darkness that lives within her, and hopefully, keep everyone else from finding out about it too. She needs this kind of place where she’ll be left alone. Where no one will realize who she really is.

Dr. Henry Jekyll, or rather a monstrous part of him, makes Shadowvale a more dangerous place for everyone, no matter how hard he tries to stop that side of himself from emerging. He’s doing everything in his power to control it, but control is hard, and solutions don’t come easy. Fortunately, the town understands he needs to be left alone.

Until somehow things go wrong, and he gets a neighbor. Izzy is incredibly nice and for her own safety, Henry knows he has to tell her what everyone else already knows. That he’s a monster. But he only ends up shocking her and turning her against him. Then another disturbing encounter makes her understand he was telling the truth, and that they are so very much alike.

When they join forces, their collaboration feels like a match made in heaven. Except for the part where the town is being targeted. And Izzy seems like the one causing all the trouble.

Can Henry battle his own demons in time to save Izzy? Or will the monster in the mirror be the ruin of them both? Only time, and love, will tell.

Monster in the Mirror by Kristen Painter
Shadowvale series #6. Paranormal romance. Closed door.
Izzy moved to Shadowvale after finding an apartment on the town website. Sight unseen. She needed to move quickly before her prior neighbors found out about her brother. The apartment is minimally furnished and she meets her nice looking, doctor, neighbor as he helps her unload her car. Izzy is happy with her move until she sees a massive tiger walking down the middle of the street and finds out the doctor is none other than cursed Dr Henry Jekyll and Edgar Hyde. What kind of a town has she moved into?

Izzy has a lot to deal with from the town of all kinds of interesting people, to her neighbor, and her own blooming powers. She handles it all impressively well. Sure, she freaks out a little over the loose tiger but everything from there is almost blasé. Not sure what I’d do it I found out I was in the home of vampires.

Entertaining and a bit humorous although there is a bit of drama and mystery.

🎧 I did a second read of this book via audiobook narrated by B J Harrison who does the full series. This format adds a bit more drama to the text making clear Izzy’s surprise at the Tiger for instance. His voice is deep and clear and much better on the male side of the characters than female. He does make the story compelling.
I listened to this at 1.6 which a smidge faster than I prefer but is necessary IMO for this narrator.

Series: Shadowvale #6
Rating: 5 stars - I loved it!

“We’re all monsters, Edgar. In our own ways.”

As soon as I saw this book was going to involve Dr. Henry Jekyll I knew it was going to be a good one. Henry was introduced very briefly in the first book and I have been hoping we would see him find a cure for his curse. Well this book was wonderful and everything I was hoping for.

Isadora Graham comes to Shadowvale in the hopes she can start a life away from her brother’s terrible legacy. She just wants a quiet place where she can start her own business but instead finds a cursed town, a cursed neighbor, and a whole lot of acceptance. I loved seeing Isadora adjust to finding out about the paranormal and her abilities. Before coming to Shadowvale, Izzy didn’t even realize she had paranormal abilities but she embraces them fully once she finds out the truth. I really liked Izzy. She was sweet, compassionate, and a wonderful organizer. I loved seeing her help Henry and Edgar. She shows both Henry and Edgar that they are not monsters just because of their appearance.

“Izzy, you are the light in my very dark life. Which, thanks to you, no longer seems quite so dark. I hope you know that.”

Dr. Henry Jekyll has lived with the curse of Edgar his whole life. He, the men in his family, have spent years trying to find a cure for this curse that his great-grandfather created. Izzy comes into his life unexpectedly but is just the person he needs. She reorganizes his life and pushes him to be a little more active in the community. Henry really comes out of his shell with Izzy and I just loved seeing him fall so hard for her. I enjoyed learning about how Henry has lived with Edgar and loved seeing him and Izzy work together for a cure. I was very surprised by how they cured him and dealt with Edgar.

Overall, this was another wonderful Shadowvale book. I really love this series and the very unique beings that live within it. I really hope we will see more Shadowvale books in the future from Painter.

Trigger warnings: Isabella's brother is an arsonist and serial killer. Reference to abandonment by mother; On page arson cases;

2023 bk 14. Back to the enclave of Shadowvale - where secrets and paranormals live hand in hand. A woman escaping from her brother's past evil actions moves in next door to Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. She lives in hope of a normal life without the burden of her brother but quickly learns that other folks, including her neighbor, carry equally difficult burdens. As a professional organizer, Dr. Jekyll employs her to straighten his messy office and work as his lab assistant. Along the way the pair find love, a hidden talent, and introduce the reader to some citizens of Shadowvale not previously met. While the author says these could be read as standalone - for this one in particular I recommend reading all of the series.

This was a solid addition to the series, though my overall thoughts on this is very middle-of-the-road. It's not a new favorite and I think that boils down to the fact that I didn't really connect with Izzy, our main character. That being said, I really enjoyed the romance in this book was very sweet and adorable.

Overall, this was a sweet, cozy time and I can't wait for the next in the series.

excellent

I sincerely love this series. Each book is creative, original, and entertaining… a perfect escape.
Henry and Izzy and an interesting couple, with some serious personal complications. I especially enjoyed the way they work through each “issue” and learn their new normal. Definitely another hit and I can’t wait for more!

This is a great addition to the Shadowvale series. I was quickly drawn in and kept on the edge of my seat in anticipation of what was to come next. The characters are intriguing and had me vested in their happiness. I can’t wait to see what happens next.

Kristen Painter has done it again! This is another well written and exciting addition to the Shadowvale Series! So as always the character are well written and developed. I love the stories that come out of Shadowvale. This book is charming, funny, heart warming and has a little mystery to boot. If you haven't given this series a chance...I don't know what the heck you are waiting for. You can't go wrong with any Kristen Painter books, she hasn't written anything that i don't love!

I really enjoy reading Kristin painter. And I really enjoy Shadowvale! I read this with my daughter, and while it is a romance, it is not overly inappropriate for a 12 year old to listen to. In this book, we explore Dr. Henry Jekyll, who we have met in a previous book because he is alternate ego. I had created some damage in the town. Paired with we meet easy or Isadora, who we eventually learn, is an empath of great magnitude. This goes onto the insecurities that she holds because she has a twin brother who murdered people with arson, and this has always hovered over her head because she thought she was evil like he was. And of course, the traditional hovering over Henry’s head is that he has the alternate evil monster in him. So this to people pair very well together. We go through their journey of trying to love each other while dealing with their doubts.
On top of the fact that Isadora meets the founder of the town who is a witch and her tiger Thoreau. Throughout the series we have been hinted that there is going to be a book about Amelia Marchand and her unrequited love with Pasqual. For a long time I’ve been thinking that her tiger was going to be the key to this and we have just got confirmation this book that there are two souls living in the tiger not just Thoreau, but quite possibly Pasqual as well. I cannot wait for her to write a book about tiger.
This is a very enjoyable series, and I greedily await the next book to come out. If you know, this one just released recently.

Does anyone else do it where you guess where the book is going, and get a bit disheartened when your ideas are a bit more creative than the actual book? I wish I didn't cause it can set you up for disappointment, but I guess I watch too many detective shows to stop.
It was still a solid book, but the plot felt a bit lackluster. The romance was cute, it was two outsiders falling in love while they feel distanced from the rest of the town.
But I can't get over the plot. It starts with them both having darkness inside of them. Her's becomes a non-issue, just her being scared she'll end up like her serial killer twin brother and being an empath. His is fixed by basically exorcising Hyde from him.
I think I would have just preferred a twist to the plot. That the destruction was due to his hatred of Hyde, and once he accepted him, they joined like Hulk in the MCU. Or even if she actually had something dark in her, rather than knowing someone dark.
I feel a bit mean with this one. I did it to myself because it didn't meet my expectations, which is clearly a me problem.

This is by far my favorite book in the series. I'm probably being vias because I'm a nurse but it is so wonderful to read a story that gets the terminology correct and up to date. Dr Jekyll is obsessed to find a cure using his medical knowledge that he forgets that his problem is supernatural. The relation he develops with Issy is sweet and heart felt.

Everything is in the details. All the scenes are so detail that I found my self walking and looking around Shadowvale. I can smell, taste and see everything around me. To top it up B.J. does the best narration were you can easily identify which character is speaking.

All the main characters of the previous books are shown here. The best for me is that the creator of the town may have a wonderful situation for her broken heart, I hope she gets her HEA.
I highly recommend this book and if you can the Audiobook, you won't regret it.

If you are looking for a great cozy book, then you need to read this book. This is a great, fun series written by Kristen Painter. This book kept me reading way past my bedtime, I literally didn’t want to put it down. This is the sixth book in the Shadowvale Series. This book can be read as a stand alone but you will want to go back and read the other books in this great series. Shadowvale is a town that was created for people who have some type of curses. Isadora Graham comes to Shadowvale as a safe haven where she can hide from the darkness that lives within her. She meets her new neighbor Dr. Henry Jekyll who has a monstrous darkness within him as well. They feel drawn towards each other but are scared of their other sides. This is a great story and kept me rooting for Isadora and Herny. I am looking forward to the next book by this great author.

I didn't start book one of the Shadowvale series until two years after it was released. Now, I am on top of these books as soon as they release!! I love everything about the little town of Shadowvale and all of its residents - including the addition of Izzy and Henry. They fit in perfectly. I am really excited about the mention of Thoreau a couple of times and I am hoping that book 7 will be about him!

As always, B.J. Harrison does an amazing job narrating this series!

My rating scale:
5☆ - I loved this book and it brought out true emotion in me (laughter, anger, a good cry, etc)
4☆ - I loved this book.
3☆ - I liked this book.
2☆ - I didn't really care for this book.
1☆ - I did not like this book at all and probably did not finish it.

I think this one is my favorite Shadowvale book.
I love the empath route, as I have always considered myself to be in tune with peoples emotions. (And highly effected by them.)

Izzy and Henry were a treasure to read about, and I felt the love the author created between her and Henry was more realistic.

I know Shadowvale in general is about loving someone inspite of their flaws... but this one hit differently for me.

I also felt the climax/peak of the story was well resolved, and didn't leave me wishing it was "more in depth." (which I have to admit, some of the other books left me feeling that way.)

Overall. I loved it. 😍

Dr. Jekyll Seeks a Cure

Loved the storyline. Ms. Painter writes supernatural in an amazingly realistic and believable manner. Trips to Shadowvale are always interesting, and you just never know who you will encounter. There is a bit of monster in all of us, but poor Henry has a bit more than most to contend with in Edgar. Can the new neighbor in town help him, or will she be collateral damage when the monster emerges? Izzy has secrets of her own to deal with, too. Join us in Shadowvale to see what happens next.

This book was AMAZING!! I love Kristen Painter's stories - they are so original! This is a great story about Dr. Jekyll and how he is trying to cure himself of Edgar Hyde and thereby aiding his family too. New girl in town, Izzy becomes his assistant and tries to help him. This story has so many great twists and turns. I didn't see the outcomes at all. LOVED this story, a real page turner that I couldn't put down. Highly recommend!

Book 6 in the Shadowvale series, and I was not disappointed! People come to shadowvale to live openly, regardless of their curse or abilities. Izzy came to Shadowvale because of her brothers curse, and the fear that it was also a part of her. Henry is there in search of a medical treatment for the curse that has stricken the males in his family for generations. In this book we were able to find out a little bit more about Thoreau, and I really hope that book #7 is about him!

A sweet story

This was a match made in Shadowvale! Izzy and Henry meet cute and become a couple almost immediately. They both have baggage: Henry is Dr. Jeckle and Izzy’s fraternal twin brother is a serial killer and arsonist. They have to work through challenges, but while the story was really engaging (couldn’t put it down) it was also sweet how these 2 people loved, supported and protected each other.

This was another amazing read /listen by this author. I LOVED the characters. And I didnt guess who the culprit was ,as far as who was setting the fires. I think my favorite part was seeing more of the tiger and the creator of the town. Theirs is an interesting story. I think they are my favorites.

BJ, the narrator, is the most amazing ! He can do any voice, male or female. I could listen to him all day.

I love and respect this series

In my 60’s, have read a bazillion books and unfortunately am wired to anticipate certain tired tropes. It’s ruined many books for me, hard to find something refreshing and engaging. Ms Painter happily surprises me every time. The women are strong, the men are kind and supportive, and super powers aren’t always evil. These are satisfying good-feel reads. I look forward to each one.

What if the curse of Dr Jeckyl and Mr Hyde didn’t stop with one man? Henry, descendant of Dr Jeckyl, is a lonely man trying to end this curse for his family. Izzy has a curse of her own. Do the sins of her twin mean she is a danger as well?
Ms. Painter takes us back to Shadowvale with meowls and constant cloud cover to meet these two people looking for a way to rid themselves of the monster within.
Wonderful book with amazing characters.

Monster In The Mirror, Kristen Painter’s sixth Shadowvale book reimagines the Jekyll and Hyde story in a modern tale of love and the search for a cure to an affliction affecting generations of the Jekyll family. A new neighbor with secrets and shadows of her own brings a calming influence almost immediately while events in town may force her out of the safe haven she desperately needs. Another excellent entry in this fun series.

I love a good twist on a classic story and this book has it! All Dr. Henry Jekyll wants is to be free of his curse. Izzy is afraid that she carries a dark curse as well. In true Shadowvale fashion, the two are meant for each other and help to resolve the other’s curse. I especially enjoyed seeing Henry show Izzy around the town and explain the various paranormals who live there.

Return to Shadowvale

Fun, fast read, with a lot of terrific characters. I love Shadowvale, the concept and the vision of the town! This book did feel a little rushed and too neatly tied up. I would have liked a little more drama, and danger. Although, I am glad Pasquale is being addressed!

What a wonderful addition to the Shadowvale series. Izzy is a professional organizer who moves to Shadowvale because of a darkness that surrounds her and her family. Henry is a doctor who has a dark side as well. Together they overcome their personal darkness and bring in their own lights. Riveting, romantic, and kittens. Perfect.

So worth the wait!

This trip to Shadowvale was a beautiful journey. The characters are perfect, the touches of the 'backstory' of the town and a few of its inhabitants were just enough. I loved the main characters, their story was just wonderful. Can't wait to go to Shadowvale again!

Monster in the Mirror (Shadowvale #6) is a wonderful place to be, warm, inviting (once you are through the gates), friendly and always something interesting to see - I totally want to sit on a bench, eating pun worthy ice cream and get to see a tiger walking down the street.
