At 10:47 AM, Nava Katz is given a magic destiny. Turns out it’s non-refundable. Destiny can suck it.
Nava Katz is an expert at burying her lost dreams and wielding cynicism as her personal brand. Then she interrupts her twin brother's induction ceremony into a secret supernatural society, accidentally torches his life-long dream, and steals his destiny as a Chosen Demon Hunter.
Suddenly she’s got dangerous new powers she can’t control, a centuries-old Brotherhood rooting for her to crash and burn, and her twin’s life hanging in the balance. Her designated shadow? Rohan Mitra, a brilliant, dangerous slayer whose inner demons earn nods of respect from actual ones.
With demons on her tail, sabotage at every turn, and her own doubts trying to take the wheel, survival is only half the battle. The real challenge is believing she’s worthy of this power—and a second chance.
The Brotherhood wants her gone. The demons want her dead. First day as a Chosen One and she's already nailing it.
Ready for snark, steam, and supernatural smackdowns? Nava’s your girl.
Deborah Wilde is a global wanderer and hopeless romantic. After twelve years as a screenwriter, she was also a total cynic with a broken edit button, so, she jumped ship, started writing funny, sexy, urban fantasy and paranormal women’s fiction books, and never looked back.
She loves writing smart, flawed, wisecracking women who can solve a mystery, kick supernatural butt, banter with hot men, and still make time for their best female friend, because those were the women she grew up around and admired. Granted, her grandmother never had to kill a demon at her weekly friend lunches, but Deborah is pretty sure she could have.
Thank god for character growth! The first book, I was confused about Nava's supposedly bad-ass independence not extending to taking care of herself (the first demon kill scene? All I could think was how she decided to put herself in some stupid situation that was all about someone else, despite having her own wants.). So glad that, by the end of book 3, she's much more "liberated". Definitely helps the other misogyny she's fighting off go down easier (though not quite when her brother or boytoy are directing it toward her...).
Loved Prague. Love the magic. Love the complex feelings. Love the Jewish aspects. The story is inventive and just want I need right now -- something to look forward to reading. Yay!
The Unlikeable Demon Hunter: Sting #2 - Babyslay vs. psycho spawns. I missed the first book, how sad! Not reading book one did not take anything away from book two. She's an abrasive, smart mouth with an over-sex-drive, which is OK, because she can kick butt. I love the way Rohan trains her as she's fighting for her life. Ms. Wilde is a wonderful author: her colorful descriptions; the humor; a reasonable amount of vulgar language. It's true that not all real people use vl, much less curse. The action, fast pace, humorous plot along with the good descriptions holds the reader in a tight grip. After the first sex scene, the story kicked into overdrive. There's sex, but don't let that stop you from reading this entertaining book. All sex scenes boremeoutofmyeverlovingmind, I'm not a prude. Paperback. 5*
The Unlikeable Demon Hunter: Need #3- More Babyslay. More of the well written series, with the humor, the colorful descriptions and twisting plot that makes Need almost as interesting as Sting. The action and romances continue and it's hard to put the book down. The vulgar language is kept to a reasonable level and the sex scenes still boremetodeath (not just this author's, all authors). I contacted the author to review this book after reading Sting. 5*
The Unlikeable Demon Hunter: Crave #4 – Another well written, action-packed, fast-paced, intrigue filled book. This must the best so far with the well thought out plot of nonstop twists and turns and surprises that keeps the reader glued to the pages. The characters show growth and even the minor characters have enough to them to keep the reader interested. The vulgar language is actually toned down quite a bit and there’s plenty of graphic sex – skip them if GS is not your cuppa, I find all GS boring. While not a cliffhanger, there’s more coming. Ms. Wilde does an excellent job with her descriptions. 4*
The Unlikeable Demon Hunter: Fall #5 - I did have a problem with the chapters about the Pride parade. I'm not sure if I was getting a lecture or Pride forced down my throat, but I got bored quick with much of the information that didn't matter; clothing, repetition, etc. (You don't know me so don't think I dislike gays; boring is boring regardless of subject matter.) I love this series but this book didn't have the magic like the previous books did. Maybe it was too much unimportant information (or filler is the impression I sometimes received) and not the usual fast paced intrigue that this series has in bunches. The book is still good but I had to work at reading it over several days; either too wordy or sometimes I was just confused. I usually finish one of Ms. Wilde's book in one day; you can't put them down, they're so entertaining and addicting. Still, I'm looking forward to the next book. 4*
To all authors: I find pages of "praise" in any book annoying when I'd rather see the list of books by an author and then the story. I don't give a rat's toenail about other people's opinions and I dislike hunting for information and the start of the story; plus everyone has a smartphone that they can look up reviews. In the days of paperbacks, I wouldn't buy a book because of the pages of reviews unless it was one of my authors and then I didn't open the book till I got home.
This series is improving with every book. I hope that there are many more to come and I'm eagerly awaiting Book 4. If you like the series, there are currently three short stories available when you sign up to Deborah's newsletter and they are well worth reading too. Two of these stories (1.5 and 2.5) give an insight into the relationship of Nava and Rohan from his point of view and the other (2.5) is Drio's turn to speak while having an unexpected encounter.
Each story is plot driven but also character driven too. The overall story arc progresses with each book as the characters develop in themselves and in their relationships with each other. It is a beautifully written series and a pleasure to read.
The Unlikeable Demon Hunter (Book 1)
Crude, rude and funny. Definitely X-rated. The title certainly does what it says on the tin as Nava is unlikeable from the very beginning - self-obsessed, selfish and absolutely not the definition of heroine. As the story progresses we learn a bit more about why she is the way she is, making it easier to understand her and even sympathise with her. By the end of the story I liked her better but the book worked for me because of the other characters and her relationship with each of them, especially Rohan. I admit I am not very good at putting into words what I liked about a book and why I liked it so I'm just going to say that I did like it and am looking forward to the next one.
The Unlikeable Demon Hunter: Sting (Book 2)
I thoroughly enjoyed the first outing of Nava (the very unlikeable!) and was looking forward to seeing what direction Deborah would go in the second book. I was not disappointed at all. Nava is trying hard to find her feet in the world of the demon-hunting previously all male brotherhood while looking for a way to help her brother Ari and keep her best friend a secret from said brotherhood. Her friends with benefits relationship with Rohan is tested by the mission, the arrival of Rohan's childhood friend and previous love and by Nava's own insecurities and stubbornness and her hate/hate relationship with Drio evolves into a kind of acceptance of each other, which was good to see.
The Unlikeable Demon Hunter: Need (Book 3)
This book is one hell of a ride. Nava and Ari are working together on a mission and it's not going as well as expected. She is stressing about that and her relationship with Rohan, her hot not-boyfriend. She is snarky and fearless as usual but is fighting her own fears and feelings as well as the demons they are hunting. The characters leap off the page and suck you into the story and it is difficult to put down. Who needs sleep, eh? I absolutely loved this instalment and cannot wait for the next one. Don't read Need until you have read the first two books (and the short stories, available from Deborah's website) for maximum enjoyment and understanding. Treat yourself! (P.S. I always preferred Rizzo to Sandy.)
I LOVE THIS SERIES!! When I start one of the Nava Katz books, no one better interrupt me.
Book 1 This is the most hilarious, irreverent and demon hunter story I've read in a long time. Nava is a one-of-a-kind demon hunter. She is a twin and her brother, Ari, has studied and trained his whole life to become Rasha (a demon hunter). Nava is so funny when she appears at her brother's ceremony, still drunk, and screws it all up. Somehow, the fates thought it would be funny to make Nava the Rasha, instead of Ari. This ceremony involves the initiate gaining magical powers and a ring that cannot be removed as an ID to other Rasha. The stuff she gets herself into had me rolling with laughter and sometimes wanting to smack her.
Book 2 Nava Katz is the funniest, bad-a$$, hot mess of a demon hunter you could ever want to meet. I was worried about everything she got herself into, then I would be laughing myself silly between her snark and the internal conversations she has with herself. And Rohan, sexy rock god that he is, was working that green eyed monster. I am ready for them to turn the corner on their relationship. The monsters they hunt are intriguing and kinda gross. I like that news of her hasn't spread throughout the demon world yet. I love the surprise from the demons when she kills them and HOW she kills them, they never see it coming. You know, I did wonder about Poppy. Demon or just slut? Oh well, either way Nava can handle herself.
Book 3 Nava is funny, hardheaded, stubborn, fearless, beautiful (when she doesn't have demon guts all over herself) and adaptable. She's still struggling with all the prejudices the Brotherhood has about her being Rasha and a woman, but that doesn't stop her from doing her job well. In fact, that may be why she does it so well, to show the rabbis she's just that good, even if they won't acknowledge it. Nava and Ari have some family issues to resolve and when she meets Rohan's first love, Lily, she can't help but like her. Lily has a history with Rohan that Nava can't compete with and stirs up some insecurities. She, however, is hilarious as a groupie. The more she learns about the Brotherhood and witches, the more questions she has. At least she has friends to help. I love that her and Rohan finally talk, really talk but will it help? Guess you just have to read it and find out. This is the kind of series that will have you thinking about it and laughing for days after you finish it. Don't take my word for it, pick up the set and join Nava's crazy demon hunting life and laugh for yourself. I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.
I read each of these books separately, but if you haven't had that pleasure, or if you are like me and you just like having your series books all together, then this box set is perfect for you! It is also a wonderful bargain for an amazing series. I am posting my individual reviews here. I love snarky kick ass heroines! I couldn't walk away from this book once I picked it up and I can't wait for book 2. This series had made it on to my must read list! The story line is a little more intense; there is more background given to the characters, and some growth as well; Nava is still her snarky self; and her relationship with hottie Rohan changes. I love Nava. She is full of vinegar and sugar at the same time. She makes me laugh while she takes on the world. If you are a fan of snarky, kickass, heroines then you need to read this series. Deborah Wilde takes her readers on a wonderful ride! I love this series so much! I love the growth that Nava has gone through in each of the books, and she has really found her place in her world. She is still the snarky character that I love, and she still makes me laugh. Her romance with Rohan is in a funk, and in walks her first love, Cole. Just the shake up Nava needs while chasing demons, not. The story is full of action and laugh out loud moments. There is sexiness, snark, and sassiness (if that isn't a word it should be) everywhere! If you haven't read this series then I have to ask what you are waiting for. I promise this in one you don't want to miss!
I'm generally not into reading these book collections. Hell, I'm not into reading most sequels. I'll read the first book in the series, take a look at the reviews for the second and basically skip the sequels altogether.
Thank the Demons I didn't. I loved this series. I even the fact that Nava nicknamed her vagina. Like, who does that? In these 3 books we see Nava go from hot mess to just mess. We see Nava learn her new world, form relationships, question her world, and be a total badass.
I'm totally into the fact that this book is pro-LGBT, and there's no stereotypes. Everyone is basically fluid. If there was one thing I have to say made me stop for a second is just how many people in these 3 books that are entirely too fluid with their sexuality lol. But that's cool, baby. <----- you will only get that last comment if you read the series.
Read it! I'm on to book 4, and can't wait to see what other shenanigans our fearless Lady Shock and Awe and gang get into. 🙌
Kindle Unlimited, the individual books and and the 3 pack. #4 out soon.
The Unlikeable Demon Hunter: Winner of the 2017 Raven for Favorite Urban Fantasy Meet Nava Katz. Punches like a girl. Kicks demon butt. When Nava half-drunkenly interrupts her twin brother's induction ceremony, she expects to be chastised. What she doesn’t expect is to take his place among the–until now–all-male demon hunters. It's the age-old story of what happens when a foul-mouthed, romance impaired heroine with no edit button is faced with her worst nightmare–a purpose.
The Unlikeable Demon Hunter (Nava Katz Book 1)* The Unlikeable Demon Hunter novella Slay (Book #1.5) The Unlikeable Demon Hunter: Sting (Nava Katz Book 2)* The Unlikeable Demon Hunter: Crush (Nava Katz, 2.5) The Unlikeable Demon Hunter: Need (Nava Katz Book 3)* The Unlikeable Demon Hunter: Seize (Nava Katz, #3.5) The Unlikeable Demon Hunter: Crave (Nava Katz Book 4)
This is one of my favorite authors. I liked the premise of this story...first female demon hunter, a different take on hunting demons, different types of demons. The story telling is good, it's the main character that I wanted to love so badly but couldn't. I figured she's young, walk of shame and some drinking...been there done that myself. I kept waiting for her to stop letting others, mainly every man in her life, make her feel undeserving of being the kick a$$ heroine I knew she could be. If a man treated me the way Roh treated her I would have told him to get bent six ways from Sunday. She should have never been anyone's second choice because she has it in her to be so much more. If he really wanted her he should have had to work so much harder. But that is just my opinion. Other then that Deborah is still amazing at an original story. I will keep reading everything she writes but this just wasn't right for me.
This was a compilation of the first 3 books in the Unlikeable Demon Hunter series. Nava Katz and her twin brother Ari are two 20 year olds living Vancouver Canada. Nava is the crazy screw up while Ari in the golden child. Nava has no idea where her partying life is taking her other than another one night stand and that’s totally ok with her but The Brotherhood has other plans for her. This is a action packed, sex filled series staring a woman who is a smartass, kickass, take no prisoners kind of chick. Its super refreshing to have a female lead that doesn’t apologize for going after what she wants. I can’t wait to dive into the next books.
So I wasn’t initially thrilled with the first book but it started growing on me. All the characters seemed too one dimensional and I was not too comfortable with the writing style. But I liked the premise of the Jewish protagonist and characters and let myself enjoy the story without being too judgmental about spelling and grammar errors and the story and characters seriously grew on me. By book 3 I was sold and happy that ALL the characters in this series are broken and the story is their vehicle to rebuild themselves and each other. Not your typical urban fantasy but a good read for sure.
I had some hesitations about reading the series at first (all on me since I was addicted to a different genre at the time and didn’t know if I was in the headspace for these books). However, this series caught me and I couldn’t let go. 2 days (during the workweek mind you) and I finished it and wanted more. I love it, kudos author and enjoy that glass of wine*
LOVE this series! Deborah Wilde has just hit my favorite author list! Nava is a snarky, quick witted and reluctant heroine who you just can’t help routing for. Her adventure is action packed with a healthy helping of hot and steamy man crush on the side. (Rohan is my new book boyfriend). This series will definitely be on my pre-order list for any new additions.
I really love Nava! And Rohan is the perfect hero to get her out of herself and break down her walls. This isn’t my first time for The Unlikeable Demon Hunter and I doubt it will be the last. There are soo many ups and downs in just these 3 books. Wait until you read the next 3!!
Nova Katz is the black sheep of the family, her twin brother Ari is the golden child. Ari is about to be inducted into the David Society, a demon hunting brotherhood, but Nova is the one the magic chooses to elect. Having a female in the brotherhood is a shock to everyone, especially as Ari had 15 years of training, preparing for this moment.
The stories are fast paced and well written. Loved the dynamics between the characters. Adore the snarky, sarcastic heroine and her level of crazy. Overall a great read and look forward to the rest of the series.
I was skeptical about this set. But once I got into it it I was captivated. It's funny, romantic, and packed with action. There were a few times I was kinda confused about the dialog but continue reading cleared it up. A great read.
This girl has some serious snark and sass to go with her demon hunting. Add in her gate crashing what has until now been an all boys club and you're in for a fantasticly funny read
How Nava weaves her way through a totally male world makes me laugh and want to read more and more of her adventures, even when the pious patriarchy plots to “put her in her place”.
Very entertaining read, characters are consistent and well developed, the action is entertaining and the sex is beyond hot. I read all three books in two days.
I absolutely love this series and this FMC! And trust me, she is VERY likeable. If you like strong, snarky women with deep feelings and a taking care of business attitude, read this series!
