I'm not sure how to start off this review because Romantic Killer has definitely been a different kind of "shojo" and didn't know what to expect going into this one...

I guess I can say that I was MOST interested in this volume *specifically* for Kazuki. While I was more than overjoyed by his parts and his page time, I just could not get into this volume the same way I did volume one. There are still very humorous expressions and a very funny scene involving a bug, but it was not nearly as humorous as the first volume. I'm unsure if that's because I am SUPER biased in that I could care less about anything and anyone else (except for Junta because that young man is a sweetheart and deserves to have the "love spell" as Anzu calls it broken) EXCEPT seeing the ship sail for Anzu and Kazuki. They have such a wonderful and refreshing friendship that I honestly wish the series would focus on that, even if there is never any romance to come from it (which is deep down what I REALLY want).

I definitely disliked the latest guy we meet. I noticed I sort of skimmed over his parts because I just didn't care for his actions or general attitude, no matter how hard he "changed" to get to know Anzu by the end. If I wanted to see more of a "new character," then please give us more Junta as I genuinely like his character. I can honestly say that he fits a lot of the cliche childhood friend tropes, but rather than it being "annoying," it's enduring.

Surprisingly, Riri was quite the fun character in this volume! In no way have I liked the imp in this series, but there were some funny shenanigans between the imp and Anzu that did make this volume a little more exciting than the beginning led me to believe.

Overall, I feel my review is harsh even though I didn't intend it to be. While I'm full of biases for a ship I want to see sail, I would be curious enough to try the third volume just so I can see more of Kazuki and Anzu together, whether in a "romantic" way because of the imp's doing or just them chilling at the house with their everyday shenanigans.

*(I received an e-ARC from the publisher. All thoughts expressed are my own.)*

Despite her best efforts, Anzu’s harem keeps growing at an alarming rate. Practically at the same rate that her personal space dwindles around her, coincidentally. And despite her other best efforts, she might be starting to like the changes to her life. And, despite Riri’s “best” efforts, love could be in the air…

Or, you know, not. Unlike some other series I’ve read, this one is shaping up to pull into the station with an outcome I won’t dislike either way it plays out. Which is no mean feat considering my issues with the first volume.

A lot less of Riri being miserable to Anzu goes a long way, although the icky mind control aspect with Junta still feels like a bridge too far for me. That’ll be a continual thing for me, so if you’re taking it in the spirit it’s intended, you’ll like this more. At least Anzu’s trying hard to fix him.

Beyond that, the story starts the same as it ever were, but once things get into the back half they really start heading into the actually damn funny territory that I felt the first volume was (ahem) flirting with but left me unable me to see past some of its more obnoxious aspects.

It doesn’t hurt that Anzu remains as brilliant a protagonist as she was. Even her getting used to the idea of possibly dating is okay and they throw in some excellent hints of backstory for our lead boy, Tsukasa, that makes it clear he’s got way more issues beyond mere dislike of popularity (he’s the endgame I won’t be upset about).

But mostly she just wants her cat, her chocolate, and her games, which is frankly making her one of the most relatable heroines ever in the history of manga. Her selection of shirts (and underwear) is beyond reproach.

Speaking of underwear, once an old-school panty thief shows up, of all things (Anzu’s reaction and follow-up to this are brilliant), the story finally achieves the levels that I wanted it to from the get-go.

Everything in this back half starts to land hard, especially the infamous ‘running late with bread’ trope, which gets a send-up so brilliantly twisted that it made the entire volume worth it on its own. Yes, it made me laugh that much.

That encounter also introduces the school prince, who has all the money and none of the charm such a title implies. His methods of getting close to Anzu are hopelessly ineffectual, since Anzu is exactly that amazing a character, but they mine some great comedy from it (tsundere’s are gonna tsundere).

Defanging Riri by giving them a human form and letting Anzu get some payback here and there as she fights for her life is a move that I definitely needed. A lot of the messing about is behind the scenes and that’s much less obnoxious.

What I think we’ll see as the denouement is that Anzu does indeed find love, but it will end up being on her terms and through none of Riri’s meddling (outside of introducing the boy to start with). That’s a pretty solid way to split the difference and I hope it goes there (I have not watched the anime, although I admit I am more interested in doing so now).

4 stars - I wouldn’t say I’ve done a complete 180 on the story, but I’ve at least done a 140, maybe a 150 even. If things keep improving like this for the last two volumes I will be well pleased, and that bread parody nets it an easy win this time out.

The first volume of this series made my "Top 5 Favorite Reads" of 2022, so when I saw this one was available, I hit request and was sitting on tender hooks, hoping I would be approved for it and I WAS!!!! I legit celebrated when I saw I was approved, then downloaded and inhaled it in one sitting.

So. GOOD.

I found out at some point that this is only four volumes (NNNNOOOOOOO!!!!!) and that it's based off of an anime or that an anime of it exists, so guess what I need to hunt down?!? SO EXCITED.

The Imp is the apex of all that is evil and I really like how Anzu isn't giving up and really wants to help free Junta from the Imp's spell. I kind of ship her being single, BUT I'm a romantic at heart, so want her to be happily paired off, but I DON'T want the imp to win. Catch-22!

Fav scene of this was the panty thief, I love how absolutely FIERCE Anzu can be. I must have re-read it five times when I first came to it. (I have since re-read the book itself at least as many times. It just makes me so happy, siiiigh.)

Definitely recommended if you like the tropes of shojo being flipped on their heads. I envy you if you haven't read this yet and you get to do so for the first time. Savor it!

5, I'm buying this in every possible format that I can and am going to fervently press it into the hand of every customer in my store while I sing its praises, stars.

My thanks to NetGalley and VIZ Media LLC for an eARC copy of this book to read and review.

Thank you to Netgally & Viz Media for this eArc!

This series continues to be one of the funniest stories I've ever read. It breaks your common Shojo tropes by, quite literally, breaking them.

Anzu continues her journey of avoiding love and romance in this volume, however- Imp doesn't seem to give up. She's already got two good-looking boys to keep track of, but now Imp has transformed into a human in order to torment Anzu even more.

Imp- now Riri- comes ready to lay it on thick, adding yet ANOTHER boy to the mix. Anzu is overwhelmed from it all, however by the end of this volume we finally start to see a crack in the walls she's built.

5/5 stars- The art is colorful, detailed, and the facial expressions have me dead. Highly recommend!

It’s crazy how much I’m enjoying this. I just found out it’s also a show so I can’t wait to watch it once I’m done with the next two volumes! I can’t help but feel like I know where this is going to go, but I’m excited for it because I don’t think it’ll have a classic shojo ending.

In the first volume, Anzu’s life was turned upside down when a magical creature, Riri, transported her to an altered reality where she no longer had access to any of her favorite things. Riri’s goal is for Anzu to end up In a relationship, and so she’s using every manga trope possible to increase Anzu’s likelihood of dating.

Due to a series of unfortunate events, Anzu gained an unexpected and hot roommate. But wait, now she has two! And now Anzu has not one, not two, but three hot guys forced into her life. What’s a girl who is uninterested in dating supposed to do to fend these hotties off?

This volume was fun. Again, I love that the artwork is completely in color. The storyline has progressed and the ensemble cast has expanded. The volume was interesting enough that I’ll continue reading. Recommended for readers who enjoy reverse harems.

Love the art style and how the story is progressing. It's nice to have them get to know each other and spend time together. Don't know how I feel about the new character, though, we'll see in the next one.

Volume 2 is just as fun and cheeky as volume 1. Anzu is cursed to not have her three truest desires: her cat, video games and chocolate until she decides to date and procreate. Her fairy torturer throws hot guys her way in an attempt to lure her into a relationship. But Anzu's will is strong and she hasn't given into temptation: not when one of the hottest guys in school, not when her long lost childhood "best friend" mysteriously comes back into her life (and conveniently is set to move in too in this edition) and not when the uber rich "prince" of the school takes her out on a failed date and later brings over games, snacks and kittens to seduce her into liking him.

What I love: how Riri (both in fairy and human form) keeps trying to orchestrate meet cutes and failing, Anzu's undying affection for all things cat and lounge attire, the three distinct looks and stereotypes of Junta, Kazuki, and Koganei in Anzu's life, this series makes me laugh and I can't wait to read what happens next. I also really love the art style and the bonus scenes at the end!

ok the “i’m not interested in romance so that makes all the boys like me because i’m not like other girls” is kinda grating. but other than that this volume was fun to read. i liked getting to see more of the “childhood best friend” and i liked seeing how him and “hot guy” interact with each other. the new guy introduced in this episode is someone i somehow hate and love at the same time lol. also seeing the imp in person was a twist i was totally not expecting.

Konnichiwa to all readers🌸

Today I bring you the second installment of the manga "Romantic Killer" by Wataru Momose in this ingenious parody of the shôjo genre. With that said, we begin:

❤️On this occasion the plot develops the characters of Junta, a childhood friend of Anzu who is now an athletic athlete, and Hijiri, a wealthy and famous student.

❤️In this volume we are presented with some classic situations such as arriving late to school and bumping into the beau on the way, however, this time it is he who has a piece of toast in his mouth, or the classic shopping dates.

It should be noted that the scenarios that occur and the embarrassing situations such as the appearance of cockroaches or the assault of a women's underwear fetishist in Anzu's apartment are inspired by the magic of Riri, who ups her ante by adopting a human form as a girl. .

❤️About the characters in this volume we can notice that the protagonist shows a certain affection and affection towards her potential partners, occasionally coming to perceive herself with her guard down.

On the other hand, we also learn more about the lady's past in relation to video games, a hobby that pushes her to look for a part-time job to distract her mind.

However, the fact of rejecting the gifts of Hijiri, who offered her the forbidden pleasures in exchange for going out with him and the practical lesson about the life of the humble classes, represents a very intellectual and well-crafted slap against the romanticization of the upper classes.

🌸Conclusion: This second volume not only develops the main conflict, but also continues to work on Kazuki and his constant avoidance of contact with the female gender, hinting that he may have more possibilities with the otaku.

Rating: 5🌸

Anzu continues her battle to conquer Riri's schemes of forcing her into a romantic relationship by withholding her preciouses! Although Anzu hasn't gotten rid of Kazuki or Junta (and wouldn't want to as she really enjoys hanging out with them) she is strenuously enforcing the "friend zone" making very sure everyone knows she doesn't want to date them. So Riri pulls out all the stops, including a favor from headquarters and one more "option" for Anzu.

The growing friendship between Anzu and the guys is great, but I love how Anzu herself gets to shine in this one! When another girl tries to socially peer pressure her into forcing Kazuki into a date(s), she takes the hit of dislike to herself protecting Kazuki and showing one of Anzu's best qualities, her loyalty to friends. The continuing shenanigans between Anzu and Riri are also hilarious, especially as Anzu is starting to figure out the rules to this game (and she is a Gamesmaster!).

Content notes: No language issues. One of the girls trying to get Kazuki's attention is flaunting her body, but Riri actually calls her out on it, while having a very embarrassing conversation on boobs and cup sizes; a rando steals someone's underwear and Riri manages to get Anzu to fall on Kazuki again, but Anzu is more embarrassed than flirty. Threatened minor violence to a real person, but mostly Anzu taking out her frustration on Riri (who is an indestructible wizard/imp) in fighting game style KO's.

I am OBSESSED with this series - this is exactly what I am looking for in a shojou. I have strayed away from romance manga/animes because I get frustrated with the boring male protagonist attracting all these beautiful women for literally no reason he sucks. Especially when they are super fan servicy it exhausts me. I have always enjoyed shojou when the protagonist is a female - I was obsessed with Lovely Complex because I adored Risa. Our heroine reminds me of Risa so much, it makes so so thrilled.

But more than that and more than this just being reverse harem which can also be draining at times - its just hysterical. Obviously she is going to fall in love with one of the guys (though I am rooting for the girl friend), you can tell she really has zero interest and not just being "I'm not like other girls". She's genuinely hilarious, sweet and overall just a phenomenal character. And the boys are phenomenal too - and although I do still have a favorite, I couldn't tell you who she ends up with.

This series is such a treat and I am looking forward to watching the anime on netflix. 100% getting this for my library and forcing it down the children's throats (lovingly and with consent).

5/5

Romantic Killer vol 2 continues the story of Anzu, an independent girl who needs nothing except chocolate, video games and her cat. But somehow she has been caught up in a fairy’s plot to help her find love, and she’s not allowed to have her 3 favourite things until she does. Determined to never fall in love, Anzu suffers through high school life with hot boys being thrown in her way at every turn thanks to the fairy Riri.

This manga is in full colour!!! Every page!!! What a treat. Now I’m not sure if the anime follows the manga, or the manga follows the anime, but either way the story is the same in both. This volume does take place within the first season of the anime though so nothing new for me happened so I read this volume veeeeery fast. Yet I still enjoyed it.

I love the author’s art and especially their comedic elements. My favourite character shows up in this volume too so that’s a bonus. I’m pretty sure the next volume will still be from season 1, but after that I am looking forward to continuing this story!

Thank you so much NetGalley and VIZ Media for the digital arc!!

Volume 2 absolutely delivered as many laughs and a nicely progressing storyline from volume 1. The introduction of two new characters was interesting and funny. I like how much this pokes fun at stereotypical romance tropes without bashing the audience that loves them

I am obsessed with this series. It's good. It's funny, it's everything I look for in a manga, tbh. I still want to punch Riri though lol!

***MINOR SPOILER BELOW***
The only thing that's kind of disappointing so far is a change from what I saw in the anime. Riri has they/them pronouns in the anime, which is fitting as they're a magical fairy that can shapeshift into either gender. The manga shows Anzu being confused as to which to use for Riri, usually using she/her but once saying she/him when she wasn't sure. I hope the translator uses they/them eventually, as it makes more sense for that little meddling beast lol

This volume was a fun little romp of shojo tropes, which was delightful to read, knowing our heroine is doing her damndest to avoid them. I appreciate the comedy in this series as much as I appreciate the underlying heart this story has going on quietly underneath everything else. I like that we are given more glimpses into the lead boy's mysterious, and obviously troubling past, and I like that the two lead boys set up as supposed 'rivals' are instead on track to becoming friends themselves. It's a nice change of pace. Biggest highlight is the snotty rich boy being added. Ngl, love that addition and am excited to see where that goes.
I'd give it five stars, but at times it got really wordy with the heroine's two boy-obsessed friends, who don't really seem to contribute much to the overall story yet and frankly, are quite annoying.

"The only thing bad is that face you're making."

Romantic Killer continues to remain abundantly hilarious and outrageous. We see more examples of exhausted tropes being brought into the narrative, each attempting to stand up against Momose's giggle inducing spotlight. Honestly, Riri is my favorite character and the nightmare version of a fairy godmother. Imagine a magical being appearing in your life but rather than extend any magical wishes they intend to take away everything you genuinely enjoy in an attempt to motivate you, a key tool in the plan to achieve their goal. So many times Riri refers to her paycheck that it's clear what the motivator is there. Watching Riri and Anzu troll each other has become one of my favorite pastimes. I look forward to following along with this series as it progresses.

YA shojo/romance manga about a teen girl uninterested in romance who is visited by a magic fairy who takes away her favorite things (cat, chocolate, video games) and makes several classmates fall for her, and makes a bunch of cliché plot lines happen that would normally result in her falling for them as well (e.g., trip and caught by love interest, stuck together under one roof during a storm, etc.).
But our teen girl finds all these situations annoying and refuses to fall in love no matter what romantic set ups occur.

I liked volume 1 quite a bit, and loved volume 2 which got a bit sillier since it had its set up and initial love interest established and added some more love rivals.

This was a ton of fun! Read physical copies from the library, and looking forward to volume 3. The types of clichés are familiar or close enough to ones from western rom-coms that this can be loved and appreciated even if you don’t read manga or watch anime.
Recommend to any fans of rom-coms.

*Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for providing an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review*

I was excited to pick this one up, but I felt like it was missing a lot of the charm from the first volume that made me want to read more. Anzu is still a great character, and a fun one to have in the lead for this type of plot, but I feel like her hot guy group really has no character in comparison, and there were a bunch of new characters that were introduced in a rapid fire manor. The volume seemed to focus more on building up the character list than the relationships between these characters, which I was not a fan of. It seems like this is a shorter series, so i'm interested to see how the story gets wrapped up, but I wasn't a huge fan of how things played out in volume 2.

Anzu Hoshino is living a life bereft of her favorite things - chocolate, video games, and her cat! Instead she has Kazuki Tsukasa, a fellow high schooler, staying with her for a month. And now she has Junta Hayami walking her to school. Supposedly, he was a school friend who recently moved back to this area. Also, he is a star baseball player. Then running late, Anzu gets hit by Hijiri Koganei's car. For a girl trying to avoid romance, Anzu is collecting a fine collection of good-looking fellow high schoolers! What with the burglar, the shopping trip, and Riri showing up in person, Volume 2 is a fun read! Looking forward to volume 3.

Thanks Netgalley for the chance to read this title!

I received an eARC of this title through NetGalley in return for an honest review.

I think I liked this a little better than the first volume. Anzu's personality really starts to form in this volume when the first she seemed more focused on losing all her stuff. This volume also introduces a 3rd potential romantic trope, but I'm not sure how I feel about them. He's a rich kid who thinks he can win Anzu's affection by buying her stuff.

I feel like this series is trying to get the One Punch vibe by making fun of Shojo tropes in manga, but personally, I feel like it does not always quite hit the mark. Sometimes it does, but other times it just misses. I still think it's funny. It has moments that will make you laugh out loud.
