Many years ago, my brother made the decision to quit drinking. Alcohol had turned his life upside down, and he had had enough. I’m not familiar with all the struggles he experienced during his journey, but he has been sober for quite some time (I’m not entirely sure how long). He frequently talks about how society is built for drinking, whether in public or not, and trying to quit is difficult in a world where drinking alcohol seems as common as drinking water. There have been many times in the last five years ago that I have thought it would be better for me to quit drinking, but like my brother, I find myself faced with alcohol every time I open my eyes. In commercials during my favorite TV shows, while watching my favorite TV shows, in the books I read. Every time I leave the house, I regaled with booze. Making the decision to quit drinking takes a lot more than just willpower, it almost feels like it will take an act of a higher power. This book, however, provides some easy steps to follow to help make post-alcohol life easier to get through. There aren’t a million steps to follow, there are three, and they aren’t intimidating. Even if you’re just wanting to cut way back on your alcohol consumption, this book with provide guidance to help you along the way. It’s an excellent resource.
I'd binged (bad pun!) Sean's first book, 'Sober on a Drunk Planet' whilst on holiday at an all-inclusive resort, drinks on tap 24/7 if you were so inclined. The book grabbed me in a way no other of its ilk had done. It resonated so profoundly with me, especially amidst a year of such grief, that it caused me to stop drinking there and then. His second book has arrived over 100 days down the line, still sober, and still dealing with the challenges of the year and my past. Whereas the first volume causes you to stop sipping alcohol, this is the one when you've come to a little further down the line and realise you need to keep working to stay sober. It's practical, upbeat and full of sensible steps that will aid you. Becoming sober is more than about not drinking it's about facing up to all your wonderful blemishes, the perfect imperfections and the shit you have on your back - Sean's book is the best companion for that next step of the journey.
The main benefit this book serves is being quick and easy. It’s short (250 pages, small pages, large font), and so simple in its wording that most 4th graders could grasp the concepts. In other words, a great place to start if your sober curious. Don’t expect any elite knowledge that will change your life over night, as this book is simpily a primer. A.A. Literature, and its many interpretations and forms it takes, can actually get quite complex, this book trims all fat, and get right to the point (very simplistic point).
It loses points mainly on depth, there were many opportunities to expand further into key themes while still keeping the elementary tone, Instead, no thought ever really gets past 1-2 pages.
This book is like a toolbox of skills to use when you have decided that you're giving up alcohol. Sean Alexander speaks about the physical and psychological changes that you go through when moving into a sober, wellness focused life. He equips you with skills and tools when dealing with life's challenges that you face as a newly sober person. Instead of drowning your feelings or emotions with alcohol, Sean shows you how to sit with those difficult emotions and how to process them in a more constructive way. This book will show you how to live a fully-present, productive life and that sobriety is truly the gift that keeps on giving.
A must read for anyone sober curious and thinking about a new life living alcohol free. I loved the sections on what alcohol does to the body, ie. depleting it of essential nutrients. Then using exercise we can restore dopamine and serotonin depleted by alcohol. The 3 steps are a great way to start or maintain the journey to recovery. I would definitely recommend this book!
This book is well written and easy to follow. It defines between beliefs and truths to help you on your journey. The 3 steps are self-awareness, positive action and intuition. Each step is important for being sober. So stop procrastinating and start the journey today. It even helps to deal with triggers. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to be sober.
I have read all Sean's books now (not in the right order though) & this I would say this is the best one. Having been sober on a drunk planet coming up for almost 2 years there were a lot of ideas in this book for me personally that I will try to put into action to improve my physical health & wellbeing. There are lots of tips and ideas in this book & as readers we can all grab what will be useful for us.
This book breaks down 3 helpful steps to help with your sobriety- self awareness, positive action and intuition. Lots of good information to help someone who is struggling within. I enjoyed answering the “what is your goal in life question?” Made me think about myself on a deeper level. Easy to read, I recommend this book.
I’ve read a few books about quitting drinking, and this one hits differently. It’s not preachy at all. Instead it gives you a practical plan to follow. The focus isn’t just on stopping, but on building a better life without alcohol. The authors advice is straightforward and feels real. This is a great book if you’re serious about making a change.
This is a very positive book for staying sober and know what your triggers for wanting to drink. Staying sober is very important and this book is helping so much.I would recommend to anyone that is wanting to or has someone that needs to be sober.
A great Part 2 to Sober on a Drunk Planet. I’m HUNGRY for this content. I want more of it; my only wish was that this book was longer. I plan to come back to the two books in this series anytime I’m feeling like I need a pick-me-up to abstain from drinking!
This book was great, short and well written. It held my attention well and gave me lots of good ideas about maintaining sobriety. I recommend it highly.
I have the same opinion as the first book in the sequel: “This book was an alright add to my sober readings. There were moments throughout that I connected with and agreed upon; however, it did not feel as inspiring as it could have been and I felt like I was not obtaining much new information or perspectives.“ This one especially felt more health-based, which while important, was not what I was looking for.
