Shadowblood Souls #2

Monstrous Power

Rate this book
The truth has come to light... but can I ever trust my men again?

After weeks of cruel hostility, the guys I swore to save know how wrong they were—at least about what I did four years ago. Now that they've seen my horrifying new power, will they decide I'm an enemy after all?

With what they put me through, I'm not sure I even want to stick with them. These brutal men aren't the boys I fell in love with anymore.

But nothing matters more than learning how to control my own vicious urges. So I'll accept a tentative truce while we hunt down more answers... by turning to the very monsters our creator feared most.

On the run from the guardians!

The following ratings are out of 5:
Romance: 💙❤️💚💜
Steam: 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Story/Plot: 📕📗📘📙
World building: 🌏🌍🌏🌎
Character development: 😊😘😟🤓
Narration: 🎙🎙🎙🎙🎙
Narration Type: DualNarration

The heroine: Riva - she and her shadowblood friends were born and raised in an institution. They were experimented on, tortured, and used by the guardians that were their prison guards. They were only let out to go on missions where they were required to use their shadowblood powers to do the bidding of the guardians. They once tried to escape and one of them was killed. Riva was sold to a fighting ring where she was forced to fight to the death once a week until four years later when she escaped and then she helped her friends escape.

The Heroes: Jacob, Zian, Andreas and Dominic - shadowbloods (hybrids of the shadowkind and humans).
Jacob - his talent is to catch a person with his power and force them to his will, in addition to a telekinetic ability. He is also able to shoot out spikes with poison.
Zian - his powers are keen hearing and ability to see through solid surfaces. He is a wolf shifter.
Andreas - he is able to retrieve memories from other people. He was able to get the codes to their cells out of the heads of guardians. He is also able to turn invisible.
Dominic - he is able to heal using power from other living things and he has tentacles coming out of his back.

The Story: The gang found the answers they were looking for, even if they were not the answers they wanted. They are finally back together and friends again and all their new powers have been revealed to each other, including the dark monstrous power that lives inside Riva. They are on the run from the guardians and others that may want them dead.

This book was as good, if not a bit better than the first one. The first book was mainly background information and setting up the storylines. The guys were still very much distrustful of Riva and though there was chemistry between them, there really wasn’t much romance or steam. This one was much steamier, and the romance was up quite a bit as well, since they now believe that she never betrayed them. I am liking the storylines, and the characters powers a lot more, though I must admit that I am not too fond of the tentacles on Dominic.

This audiobook was told in multiple points of view via dual narration and was narrated by Amber Lee Connors and Adam Gold. I really liked Amber Lee’s soft and feminine voice. It was age appropriate and perfect for Riva. Adam Gold has a deep voice and is able to do different voices for the different male characters.

This second book picks up where we left off in the aftermath of the carnage Riva unleashed. This group of monsters is now left scrambling around trying to decide on their next course of action and the best way forward. With the guardians still chasing them and their hopes of salvation completely burnt our group now turns to an unlikely source for some assistance answers and possible sanctuary.

During all of this Riva’s men are trying to relay and prove to her just how sorry they are for all of their previous actions towards her bridges and bonds will now need to be strengthened and firmly rebuilt for any chance of a possible future together. This then ended with a reveal I was kinda expecting but still thought was kinda cool. Im hoping February comes around quickly as I now want the final piece of the puzzle revealed.

AAAAHHHHHHHH!!!!!! I KNEW IT!!!!!! AAHHHHHH!!
YES! YES! YES!
Oh my goodness, that cliffhanger easily bumped the three star rating I was going to give to four stars. Oh. My. Gosh. I literally started screaming and my heart rate rocketed. No joke.

So, initially this book continues their journey of trying to learn how to control their abilities while also trying to escape the guardians. The plot was pretty slow, but I did enjoy the new characters that were introduced. We get introduced to the creatures that inspired their creation, and they are so much more developed and interesting, in my opinion. Alongside that, her relationship with the guys develops way more in this book. She still doesn’t forgive all of them, but their relationships have definitely improved. So, you know from the first book that Dominic has two tentacles, and in this book he PUTS THEM TO USE, you know what I mean. And then, Jake quite literally cuts off the hands of their enemies and brings them to Riva as retribution. AND THEN, he tries to cut off his own arm because he regrets using her poison from his spikes on her. Like if that’s not groveling, I don’t know what is. And I’m interested in learning about Zian’s past. Like why is he opposed to touching? I have a feeling why, but I’m hoping it’ll come out in the next book and her relationship with Zian will improve because they are taking tiny steps in mending their relationship.

About the cliffhanger, I am so FREAKING EXCITED to see how the story plays out.

Favorite quotes/scenes:

-"Whatever you need, Riva. However long it takes. Even if you never decide to try again at all. I’ll be right here."
"I matter that much to you?"
"You always did; you always will. From the first moment I was old enough to think about you as more than just a friend, I’ve been in love with you." (Riva and Dominic)

-"I’ve loved you my whole life so far, and I’ll love you for the rest of it, even if you spend the rest of yours hating me." (Jacob)

-“Our lips meld together with a familiar electric thrill. Every cell in me sings out with joy. I’ve missed this man, I’ve craved him, and now he’s back where he’s meant to be.” (Riva and Andreas)

-"Riva leans into me, taking comfort in my embrace. Just like that, I’m complete." (Dominic)

-"You’re a hell of a lot more than a moonbeam, Riva. You’re our whole goddammed sun. Wherever you go, you bring that warmth with you. You tether us so we don’t spiral out into the abyss… I love you. You are my sun, my fucking soul. I’m going to keep showing you how true that is for as long as it takes." (Jacob)

The first book was ok. Started out good. But I couldn't fathom why Riva stayed with them and took all their shit. Then she overhears Andreas and all of a sudden she spins the opposite way and won't forgive them at all. She forgives Dom so easily bblut drags out the others forgiveness.

It was super annoying. I'm all for a good grovel but when she takes all their bs and then refuses to forgive after that? It seems like it was just written for drama and it dragged put way too long.

I wish I never started this series.

If you love men groveling, this book is for you

This sequel has men on their knees practically begging for Riva's forgiveness - which is completely warranted after the bullshit they put her through in book 1. There's declarations of love, remorseful apologies, and even a plastic bag filled with the severed hands of Riva's enemies. I loved every minute of these men eating a slice of humble pie, scratch that, eating the entire humble pie.

That said, this book could've been trimmed a bit. It got to be a little repetitive as it's basically Riva & the guys on the run again from the Guardians, testing their new powers, and begging for Riva's forgiveness. Which is all fine, but it didn't need to be almost 450 pages. Pretty good spice, one threesome scene (no ⚔) BUT Dom's tentacles come out to play (literally). Ends on a mild cliffy - but also it's kind of a mindfuck so I'm very excited for book 3!

I really enjoyed the continuation of this story, while at times it felt a bit slow with some aspects of the plot the character growth & relationships really took front seat.
I feel like the story took off from where I thought it was going to go in b1, but then got a bit predictable again… then surprised me again - But I can firmly say I have been entertained the whole way.
The spice was great - including a surprising bit of tentacle play that I wasn’t expecting, but didn’t hate! I love that all the MC’s are exploring it together for the first time (mainly) no super experienced men with the one inexperienced FMC 🙌🏽
Overall it’s an enjoyable read & I find the writing really bingeable.
Loved the plot twist at the end & cant wait for b3!

3.75!!

Monstrous Power kicks off right after Shattered Vow and I ate it up like junk food. The main focus of this book is the relationship growth between her and the guys. And I loved that they BEGGED for forgiveness. Literally. Drey got down on his knees (although i found this part of the book a bit embarrassing with the party but it was thoughtful) and just let her scream at him. It was wonderful. BUT they literally put Riva through torture and I'm looking forward to what else they do to make it up to her. I also did appreciate Jacob's severed hand gesture but it seemed out of character? I know he is the biggest asshole but that was a different level.

I like the progression with Jacob and Zain. We're starting to see more of Zain which im excited about! Dom is perfect, he must be protected.

Riva makes up with everyone but there is still so much tension and how much she doesn't trust anyone but Dom and Drey completely, although she knows they all have her best interests as a number one priority.

Everyone is on a journey of self-acceptance by embracing their abilities instead of rejecting them. They're doing this by practicing with the help of Rollick (who is from another series of the same universe). He seems very sus since he seems to be doing so much for them with no benefit, (note: i have not read his story) but I guess time will tell.

Ending (spoiler)

I am sooooo excited for the next one!

4.5⭐️- Rounding up because I’m so glad Riva made those men BEG!

I love this book!! Monstrous Power starts with a bang, picking right where Shattered Vow ended (which was in the midst of absolute madness). Riva grapples to figure out her horrific power, the relationships with her guys, and her place in the world all while constantly running for her life. The drama, the angst, the tension, the action, the demons, the spice- it’s all so good!

The crew is on the run so there is lots of journeying happening- but this time there are some unexpected allies tagging along. Riva and her guys decide to seek out and team up with the monsters they were bred to hunt in order to learn more about themselves and their powers. The new characters add some complexity to the story that’s very intriguing- I can’t wait to see what comes next.

Riva had strained relationships which her 4 guys after the events of Shattered Vow- and I love the pacing and development of those relationships. They beg, they grovel, and they have to WORK for forgiveness. It’s delicious.

I love this series so much and am so excited to read the rest in the future!! Brace yourself, this one ends on a pretty gnarly cliff hanger 👀

OH MY GOD THAT CLIFFHANGER???!!!! Good thing this series is rapid release because I CANNOT WAIT FOR THE NEXT BOOK!!

I really enjoy this series, the characters all have unique personalities and I really like the story. Riva is a great FMC—she’s learning to be confident and to control her powers, and it’s honestly nice to see her struggle and not have complete control over everything sometimes. I really liked the plot in this one, it expanded the world and story a lot and set up future books! THE ENDING??! I was holding out hope that a certain someone would show up. 😏 I can’t wait to see what happens in book 3!!

There was indeed more spice in this one 😌 WITH TENTACLES??! I die. Also, the groveling from the guys was delicious. *evil cackling* I like that Riva still hasn’t fully resolved her relationships with some of the guys as it still has me wanting more. I’m hooked. 🫡

⚠️⚠️ FULL SPOILERS ⚠️⚠️

Notes for goldfish brain girlies to remember:
The group goes to one of the facilities to break out younger shadowblood kids (which I think they’re successful?). But they decide to go back inside to see if they can find any useful info and Riva is trapped by Griffin (at least I’m pretty sure it was him??! I hope it was him). And that’s how it ends. Also Riva is fully committed to Andreas and Dominic, and is getting there with Jacob and Zian (although Zian might have some trauma going on that’s holding him back??)

This was far better than the first book, not a lot of was explained but the plot and charcaters definitely advanced. Jacob is still a horrible charcater idc, if a man gave me a bag of hands of my attackers I would not be pleased and his characterisation is all over the place, with massive jumps in how he treats Riva and his control over his powers.

If you like grovelling men, this one is just for you! However, for me, some sins are simply unforgivable. You're not sorry you did it; you're sorry you've been caught. Also, the first book didn't really make sense; if someone can see your mind and your memories and you still don't believe them? I know there are some limitations to this particular power, but I truly believe if they wanted to know, they would find the way.

Ok, this was my continuation of the rant from book number one :)

Will I wait and read book number three? After that cliffhanger, I kinda have to see how the author is planning to explain this ultimate betrayal. I have my theories, but it would be such a fucked up situation if this was all true. Not saying more, but it would be so out of the character...

I'm trying really hard to get into this series, but for whatever reason there is a huge disconnect. I'm not feeling anything for this story or the characters besides boredom and apathy. I can't seem to make myself interested or to even care what's happening.

- 👀 POV: Multiple, first person
- 📖 Urban Fantasy
- ❣️ Reverse Harem
- 🎱 Tropes:fated mates? captives, on the run, MC's are product of experimentation, monsters
- 🧁 FMC: strong and tough, but too mired in her conscience; she can barely even kill the bad guys until she just explodes. She comes off as vulnerable and weak and she's become annoying. She spends a lot of time wallowing in self pity and self recrimination.
- 🌎 3/5 World-building Stars
- ⭐️ 3/5 Plot-line Stars
- 🤓 3/5 Character Development Stars
- 👥 Harem: four "monstrous" men. She's only bonded with two of them.
- 🍒 Virgins: Everyone but one guy is a virgin (before the series started anyways)
- ♥️ 2/5 Romance Stars
- 🌶 2/5 Spicy Stars (two quick sex scenes and one oral interlude)
- 🔥 Medium-Slow Burn
- 👄 Kinks: tentacles, threesome
- 🚫 No: MM, OW, Cheating, bullying, dub/non-con
- ‼️ Triggers: mentions of past abuses, violence, murder

God it's so refreshing to read about an FMC who doesn't roll over like a spineless loser the second an MMC says "sorry". She's making them work for it, AS SHE SHOULD. Bernadette and Oleander could fucking never.

Monstrous Power by Eva Chase is an urban fantasy romance that I listened to on audio narrated by Amber Lee Connors and Adam Gold. This is the second book in the Shadowblood Souls series.

I love Eva's books! I was pulled in from the first chapter and couldn't wait to see what was going to happen next. I am really enjoying the relationship between Riva, Jacob, Zian, Andreas, and Dominic. It is extremely messy and complicated since she walked back into their lives. But I can't help but root for them. I can't wait to see how it will continue to progress over the course of the series. I really enjoyed getting all of their points of views throughout the book. It really brought the story to life.

The book ended on another amazing cliffhanger that left me begging for more. I can't wait to jump into the next book in the series Captured Fate.

Amber and Adam did an amazing job on the narration. They both really know how to bring a story to life. I look forward to listening to more of their work in the future.

I would recommend this book if you're looking for an urban fantasy romances, why choose romances, or romantic suspense.

This is everything I wanted to happen after book one. Honestly best sequel with the relationships. The middle and lead up to the ending was boring but it's ok because it's obviously training time(which isn't that what they've been doing this whole time while caged up?) but the relationship fights and rekindlings make it go by fast!

Spoilers here on out!

The (not so surprise) tentacle porn was great! The closest we ever got was North Dravens shadow vines in Broken Bonds but this is what we all wanted! We got to see these tentacles get out to work and they did in a threesome. The sex scene, immaculate.

This definitely had middle book syndrome where it gets repetitive. Run away from bad guys, train powers to get stronger, rinse, repeat.

I also still dislike Jacob. I'm sorry but I just don't think he should be forgiven before any of the other boys, especially poor Zian

We never really get a full description on what these shadowblood creatures are? Theyre demons and come from another rift they said but they aren't born?? So many questions

I will def be reading the next book but taking a break for a bit!

cliffhanger and mixed feelings

What I did like of this book was 5/5, so it was hard to rate overall because it wasn’t a 3/5 but not quiet a 4/5. Cliffhanger- there’s a third book. But the first book in the series was brutal, it wasn’t just bully but literal torture. I was hoping for some groveling and was super curious to see what our author would write to convince us to forgive the guys. We didn’t get a whole lot of satisfying groveling, just apologies. I mean that’s great they realize they were wrong and are sorry now but it seemed shallow….Like the characters were at a loss themselves if they could even atone for something so vicious, and I felt that. I wasn’t totally convinced and neither were they. The “reason” they realized they were wrong at the end of the last book was a shocking event but didn’t really connect to the sudden guilt. It just seems a little disharmonious. Love the authors other work and will read the next book but this one was a bit of a search for plausibility in the relationship dynamics (as much as there is in a fantasy novel lol).

Another great addition to this intriguing series. There are more problems between Riva and her guys as she learns her new power. Their search for answers leads them to Rollick and his spies. More surprises are in store for them as they plan a rescue mission. The cliffhanger will make you want to read the next book to find out what happens next. Great story.
I received an ARC copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

I absolutely loved this book. Riva is a strong mc and her guys will do anything to get Riva to forgive them and to have it the way it should be. I love how Riva didn’t give in too them right away. This book and characters definitely gave me all the feels. I am completely hooked on this series. The characters are amazing and I definitely need the next book ASAP especially how this book ended.

Oh my

Oh my...I am so loving this world. The Shadow bloods are trying to find help to figure out more about what they are, and help with their power... and they find help from an unexpected source. Tension is high with others of their "kind", and not everything is quite what it seems.
I read and listen to it, and the narrators are amazing
