A photographer accepts an assignment in the city of his birth, but finds his life entangled with that of a young woman who took part in the Hungarian Uprising, decades before. When he takes photos using an old Leica II that belonged to her, he gets her photos superimposed on his – while his own pictures are no use to her as she tries to document the brutality of the Russian troops and the Secret Police.
A nation discovers hard-won freedom and tries to reinvent itself to be fairer and kinder, but the Soviet Union isn’t done with Hungary. After two impossible weeks, the revolution is crushed… and the challenges for one young student are just beginning.
Oh, my...this book! Using a unique concept, the author has written a compelling story set in Hungary, in 1956 and 2022. So many current global issues are brought to light, from fascism to immigration. The two main characters share a love of photography as well as a disability and despite the decades that divide them, develop an unbreakable bond.
This book is remarkable, in both prose and vision. I highly recommend it and hope it gets a wide following.
Once again, Mr Delling demonstrates his enviable talent with the written word. The narrative is clear and concise (and grammatically sound!), and the dialogue smooth and realistic. Excellent writing.
