Type 1 diabetes is a severe insulin-dependent form of diabetes, which most commonly affects children, but may occur at any age. Until 1921, when the epoch-making discovery of insulin was made by Dr Fredrick Banting and colleagues at the University of Toronto, Canada, children with type 1 diabetes could only live for a few months. The discovery of insulin in 1921, (considered one of the greatest miracles of modern medicine) changed the lives of those with type 1 diabetes, forever. However, very little is known about what happened in India around the time of the discovery of insulin. Dr J.P. Bose of Calcutta was one of the first doctors to document the use of insulin in India. His contributions which have been largely forgotten have been resurrected through this book. There are also very few reports of the lives of those with type 1 diabetes in India. This book chronicles for the first time, the first recipients of insulin in India and also those who lived for several decades, some even for sixty or seventy years, with type 1 diabetes. Hence, the title of this book, Banting, Bose and Beyond is extremely appropriate. The book would be of great interest not only to those with diabetes and their families but also to students, medical professionals and indeed everyone. The true stories of the heroes with type 1 diabetes described in this book, will be an inspiration to anyone with any chronic disease. Written in Dr V. Mohan’s usual sagacious and yet gripping style, it is a thriller that is difficult to put down. Dr Mohan is a great storyteller and this book is yet another jewel in his literary crown.
Amidst so much internet jargons it is truly difficult to differentiate between what is right information and what is wrong, whom to believe and whom not and it's same for old wives advices. For so long I believed what was taught to me as a child that 'Kids don't get diabetes', 'you don't get diabetes at this age'. But is that true? No. My perception around this slow poison disease changed completely after reading this book. Type 1 diabetes is a severe insulin-dependent diabetes which is common in children and can attack a person at any age. 'Banting, Bose and Beyond' is a book that is alarming, informative and inspiring at the same time. In this book Dr. V. Mohan a renowned Diabetologist in India, talks about the enigmatic disease or more accurately a chronic disorder called diabetes and how the discovery of Insulin changed the world. Here he has point by point laid down the whole concept of diebetes, it's history, the possible solution and preventive measures taken by narrating inspiring stories of people who are living with T1D.
This book is a great contribution to the very scarce and misunderstood information about diabetes. Not only that, it shows how human perseverance can defeat even the most difficult hurdles of life. Each story whether it's the discovery of Insulin or the individual story of a person already dealing with T1D is laced with human struggle to thrive and persevere. After reading this book I realised how little I knew about this and how little people around me know about this disease. The focal point of this book is type 1 diabetes which is a most common misdiagnosed disorder of all time. Every chapter of this book is so illuminating on each aspect of diabetes, surely a worldwide problem that must not be taken lightly. The book has helped me to realise the actual extent of destruction this life altering disorder can have in terms of physical, mental, social and financial level. The way the stories of each person is depicted is heartbreaking but inspired me to thrive and live life to the fullest.
Writing style is very simple yet gripping making it an unputdownable book. Being a nonfiction medical book does not deter it from being engaging and interesting, it grabs attention instantly. After reading this book I'm much more aware of this disease and would like to suggest everyone to read this book to get educated as well about type 1 diabetes.
"Type 1 Diabetes" also called as "Juvenile Diabetes" but it can occur at any age. People are living with it ,their care givers must be trying their best to control this. I believe it is a Life changing disease.
Hence this book is a great resource for people with Type 1 diabetes and those who care for them since it covers every element of the disease in great depth, beginning with how the diagnosis and treatment have evolved over time.
Dr. V. Mohan guides us through the history of diabetes care in India during the past 100 years. With the accounts of patients who have survived Type 1 Diabetes in their own way.
I came across a lot of medical terminology but they were understandable. Diabetes runs in my family so it was something i could relate to personally. I found it very articulated, the author has equipped readers with references and links at the end of each story. The book has some unique images that take the reader to the historic moments.
The Author has maintained a pace throughout. The writing is amazingly frank. A must-read for everyone who enjoys reading an in-depth, easy-to-follow handbook on the subject.
The discovery of Insulin by Dr.Fedrick Banting is perhaps one of the best miracles that happened to mankind. Around the same time, Dr.J.P.Bose was the first to document the use of Insulin in India. Little was known about Diabetes then and even less of it was documented. Hence his works were not properly recognized. In this book, Dr.V. Mohan has recognized and acknowledged the works of Dr.Bose and has also introduced us to the first Indian recipient of insulin. Though the book is about insulin and diabetes and all things medical, it should be mistaken for a book solely for people with a medical background. The author has also brought out the heroes who have survived this condition and who are battling with it and how much insulin has transformed their lives! Their hardships with this condition and experiences have been elucidated touchingly. What was once considered a stigma has now become a condition like any other that can be easily brought under control with the right medicine. Along with this he also shares his experience in treating people with this condition. This is my second book by this author and I enjoyed the narration style just as much as I liked his previous one – Making excellence a habit. The medical terminologies have been simplified and explained clearly so that even a layman will find it interesting! Reading through the pages I could feel the author’s passion for science and how committed he is to research and also treating patients. There are some photos / pictures that enhance the appeal of the book. In all, a really good book for everyone. It doesn’t matter if you have a medical background or not, this one will tell you in very simple terms the lifesaving attribute of insulin. It will be an eye-opener for all and broaden the knowledge on this subject.
🔹Before insulin was discovered in 1921, people with diabetes didn’t live for long; there wasn’t much doctors could do for them. The most effective treatment was to put patients with diabetes on very strict diets with minimal carbohydrate intake. This could buy patients a few extra years but couldn’t save them.
🔹Diabetes occurs when your body doesn’t use insulin properly or make enough insulin. There are two main types of diabetes: type 1 and type 2.
🔹 Banting, Bose and Beyond’ by Dr. V. Mohan, is an very informative book, In this book the author has talked about diabetes, it's history and it's cure. The book consists of so many stories to give the information about diabetes and insulin.
🔹Dr. V Mohan has spent his medical career in researching about diabetes and finding the best possible solution to cure type 1 diabetes.
📌 𝙈𝙮 𝙩𝙖𝙠𝙚
🔹This is my second book by Dr V Mohan, his first book I have read "Making excellence a habit" is his autobiography where he shared his life experiences as a student, doctor, researcher, and teacher.
🔹Honestly I truly appreciate Dr.V.Mohan sir for what he has done for the people who suffer through diabetes and how he has come up with the centres and organisations that help diabetic people to overcome their diabetes and live a healthy life with their loved ones.

This book turned out to be an inspirational and motivational read for me and an excellent example of creating a world-class healthcare system through hard work and passion. This book is a must-read for all young doctors and medical students, hope it encourages them to do something for society.
Did you know that there are around 422 million diabetics worldwide, the majority of whom reside in low- and middle-income nations and that diabetes are directly responsible for 1.5 million fatalities annually? The stats continue to be troubling after this stat. The pharmaceutical and medical industries are working together to combat this chronic condition in an effort to prevent the millions of lives that are lost to it. It keeps getting worse every year. Even if total eradication is not yet attainable, there are methods for treating patients to keep their blood sugar levels under control. The common remedy is to administer shots of insulin to regulate the rising sugar levels. We appreciate the researchers whose persistence led to the development of this drug so that human lives can now be saved from diabetes. The history of the discovery of insulin and how it changed the course of medical history are explained in this book by Dr. V Mohan, who is widely recognized for his work in the field of Diabetology. Saving lives in the early years was a huge undertaking for doctors because diabetes is a silent killer. Given that it contains accounts of events related to the finding, this book was highly fascinating. Dr. V Mohan was inspired to write this book by his love for his subject. His writings are excellent sources of knowledge. This book should be read by anybody interested in or currently practicing medicine. True patient experiences and the book's straightforward language and writing style are some of its best features. Knowing a disease's history is just as important as knowing the disease's remedy because we must recognize the sacrifices made by everyone who contributed to its success.
🔺‘𝘉𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨, 𝘉𝘰𝘴𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘉𝘦𝘺𝘰𝘯𝘥’ is all about the great events that took place almost a century ago. The author is a renowned medicine practitioner who also has enhanced the path of treating diabetes. This book is a journey of creating that history and a look down the memory lane. There are several stories relating to that and also about the patients the doctors encountered back at the time🌟
🔺The book is not only a very important read for the diabetes patients and the ones who deal with them on regular basis but also for the ones who have a career in medicine and anything related. The book is sort of a case study on different patients but each case is different from another. The book is filled with incidents and pictures which are hard to find in today’s time. There are extra materials at the end of each chapter for the ones who are interested to know more. The names of the chapters are unique as well💫

Diabetes has been ruling the world for the past two decades. I remember people in my family telling, grandpa has sugar, so give him coffee without adding sugar. The book further explored on the contributions of Dr.Bose to controlling diabetes. From those who were first treated with insulin to how insulin has benefitted them, every intricate detail is documented in this book.
With the proper insulin treatment, even people who suffered from Type 1 diabetes started living beyond 60-80 years of age.
My first book by the author was making excellence a habit and I thoroughly loved it. Hence I picked this book to learn more about the author and his contribution to the Indian medical industry. Are you afraid of any medical term or treatment? . Book: Banting Bose and Beyond Genre: Healthcare, Non-fiction Author: Dr. V Mohan . . My ratings: 4/5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐ . . Diabetes is something now we take so lightly... and never think about our healthy habits from early age. When one in my family got the news it was scary for that person, but we again took it lightly and as needed for that time imposed restrictions but never thought about the emotional trauma to them. Though the book doesn't cover that all emotional factor but explains everything in very descriptive way.
Major focus of book is type 1 of diabetes and the discovery of insulin. Contribution of Frederick Banting and Charles Best in discovery of insulin. I love the part covering the contribution of Dr. J.P. Bose who is responsible for first use of Insulin in India.
So many case studies are given to explain all the possibilities of type 1 diabetes... Tbh... I'm so glad I read it. Easy to comprehend, simple vocabulary and easy to understand medical terms. I love the writing style of author, the way he write in different time lines.
Overall a great read and every one should try reading it.
Diabetes, a disease most of us don't take seriously and aren't aware about the severity of it. Earlier 1900 there was no cure available for diabetes and people infected with it had a very short lifespan. It was the combined effort of "Charles Best" and "Frederick Banting" what made the invention of Insulin possible(a life saver for almost 40 million+ Indians today).
This book covers all the experimentations prior to the invention of Insulin, difference between animal based and human based insulin. How diabetes affects your body and how it can impact you emotionally, physically and financially if not discovered at the right time. Enough no. of case studies are provided in form of real life stories from some of the survivors, what was their traumas and how they tackled it. Through this book author have perfectly pin pointed the sociatal pressure or discrimination on the diabetic patients, improvements needed in the field of diabetic care and the vision of Dr. V MOHAN, whose father Prof. M Vishwanathan considered as the "Father of Diabetology" in India.
Banting, Bose and Past by Dr V Mohan is a certifiable which story the disclosure of Insulin and the noteworthy effect it continues to get the presences of diabetes patients, especially in the patients of type 1 diabetes, which is a genetic explanation when stood out from type 2 diabetes, and besides the destructive one.
The book recounts the tale of how exposure of insulin changed the presences of patients who experience the evil impacts of type 1 diabetes. It is an incredibly fascinating scrutinized for the people who are dazzled with prescription and what provoked its disclosure both current and old.
Dr V. Mohan's name is indistinguishable from diabetes and diabetology in India. Dr Mohan started managing diabetes at eighteen years of age, as a second-year clinical student, when he helped his father Prof. M. Viswanathan, considered as "Father of Diabetology' in India.
From the most recent hundred years to this moment, diabetes has been a typically outrageous issue. Dr Mohan has been filling in as a diabetologist since ongoing numerous years, he met, served to a lot of patients, that is the explanation the setting has been more tremendous and edifying.
Type 1 diabetes is a severe insulin-dependent disease that most commonly strikes youngsters, but it may strike at any time in life.
Until 1921, when the epoch-making discovery of Banting and co-workers at the University of Toronto, Canada, patients with type 1 diabetes could live for just a few months.
Invented in 1921, insulin was one of the most significant medical innovations of the last century.
Although the discovery revolutionized the lives of those with type 1 diabetes, very little is known about what happened in India at the time of the discovery.
Bose, a physician in Calcutta, was one of the first people to document the use of insulin in India. These contributions have now been resuscitated through this book.
There are also very few examples of the lives of those with type 1 diabetes in India. Type 1 diabetes is documented for the first time in this book and the first people to receive insulin in India are also discussed.
Really, amazing to know these insights about diabetes. Do read...
The author's name is synonymous with diabetes and diabetology in India and is is best place to write this highly engaging erudite book in layman terms which is no less than a medical adventure and a thriller and brings to forth unknown heroes and survivors of this silent killer in India Type-1 diabetes , is a severe insulin dependent form and mostly children gets affected by it..Dr Banting in1921 made insulin discovery changed the lives of children afflicted by it..In India..It was Dr. J.P.Bose, the forgotten hero, who pioneered the use of insulin and this book russurects his contribution .Not only this lives small heroes like mr Prasanna,Roshan,Mina Fernandes and Hirachand sawane who took the treatment and survived to old age are well documented This book is really a wonderful combination of medical history and real life stories complimented by insights from author's vast experience .It os suitably illustrated with photographs of pooneers in this field but also common heroes. This book os a real gem and will appeal to not only health professionals but also to a lay reader.
This is my second read from the same author. And yet the author never ceases to surprise us. The author has a prolonged journey to walk the path of the different stages of how our population is slowly crumbling under the condition of Diabetes. The author has himself arranged many programs to raise awareness and dedicated his life to bringing significant change. And all this journey is encompassed in this book. The content with share more clarity about the less talk about habits and phenomena. And I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is Diabetic. The practical and psychological approaches mentioned are gripping and will settle a deeper understanding. The book is covering all the substantial topics that will act as your guide in this health journey. And all this recorded straight from a Doctor who has dedicated 50 years of his career to offer us the best is all one can ask for. My father is Diabetic and this book immensely helped me to figure out the right routine and causes of incidences. I hope like me, it continues to help others as well.
When someone takes an insulin shot, I feel a little uncomfortable but isn't that a saviour to many a diabetic patients? The mastermind behind it was Dr. V. Mohan, interestingly at that time he was just 18. There are a handful of doctors who really care about the humanity and therefore toil unflinchingly to resolve medical dilemmas.
Dr. V. Mohan has been such generous researcher and physician who changed the diabetes healthcare of the country. The book is a record of the many stories that are behind the making of insulin and otherwise.
It is an informative read. If you love science and the all the fun that physicians are bound to entertain themselves with, this clearly is your kind of a book.
It's motivational and quite exemplary for young takers for medicine. This is Dr. V. Mohan's second book and it doesn't disappoint you just like the first one didn't.
