Rorik Nilsen deals in death—it’s easier than dealing with the living.

He spends his days as the chief medical examiner for the city and moonlights as an asset for the Covington Security team. The best part of his job is that death holds no surprises. Until a body ends up on his table with a familiar face—but not as familiar as the woman who arrives to identify it.

Tenille Harper always knew that the next time she saw her husband, it would be in a morgue. She never expected that was where she would also run into the man whose heart she broke.

Rorik greets her as coldly as she once treated him, his intent to forget all about Tenille the moment she leaves. But when the autopsy is finished, he’s left with too many questions that only Tenille can answer.

Determined to get the truth, Rorik tracks her down, but is blindsided by what he finds. At each turn, everything about Tenille is unexpected, including the way he still burns for her. And the danger she is in. So he offers her his protection in exchange for answers. But when she gives him the truth, Rorik might just get more than he bargained for.

Rebecca Sharp always loved a good love story. Let's face it, when you include a romance novel on your 8th grade summer reading list just to see if the teacher would notice (she didn't!), she was bound to give writing one of her own a go. There's really no corner of romance that she doesn't (or wouldn't) enjoy writing, except maybe aliens, much to her husband's dismay, so her large catalog features a little something for everyone. However, her love of shows like NCIS and Criminal Minds makes her favorite stories to write the ones with some kind of suspense and crime solving.

When she's not writing, she's at her office treating patients, and somewhere between those two things, you'll find her wandering the globe with her husband always searching for their next adventure.

Dr. Rebecca Sharps' Covington Security series just keeps getting better and better. I have to be honest - I was skeptical going into this one because Rorik has always been such a mystery to us! He has been mostly behind the scenes and I didn't expect the character that we got from this book and I have never been more happy to be wrong.

Rorik and Tenille fell in love in the best way in high school. They were each others everything until Tenille broke up with him via text without a real explanation. Leaving Rorik absolutely heartbroken over the life he thought he was going to have.

Fast forward almost two decades later and they meet again. This time with someone in between them, literally. Tenille's husband is on Rorik's table as she is identifying his body. You immediately can FEEL the tension and emotions running through both of these characters.

Between Tenille leaving him and another tragic event in Rorik's life, he lived a life of solitude. Rarely having conversations unless they were absolutely necessary, throwing himself completely into work, not dating, nothing. He didn't want anything from his life now that he had lived and lost so many important things to him.

Ever since breaking up with Rorik, Tenille has had a whole in her heart missing him. While he did it because she thought she was doing the right thing, it has always hurt. And seeing him in person has destroyed her all over again.

Now that Tenille's husband is dead and she is in danger, Rorik realizes that even though he wants to hate her, he can't. He does what he needs to do to protect her and let me tell you, he does (if you know the scene I am talking about - WOW).

I loved this couple so much and the SPICE - phew, I am sweating. The scenes between these two characters were definitely about quality and not quantity. I mean can we really got hotter than the scenes between these two!?

As always, I loved seeing all of the side characters - especially my main man Dex. We also got a look at our 9th and final MMC and who his leading lady will be.

There are so many things going on in this book, and all things considered make for some intense scenes between Rorik and Tenny.

Their story starts as a HS couple who’ve been forbidden by her rich, judgmental father. Cue the break-up due to said father and the interminable wait for them to finally meet once again. That meeting, believe it or not, is in a morgue/medical bay where Rorik is performing the autopsy of Tenny’s estranged and recently deceased husband.

As their story continues, Tenny’s life is threatened, and Rorik’s bosses step up for her protection while he rails against having her nearby. There are some scenes between the two where tension palpably radiates from them, and the pages turn themselves.

While the suspense may seem somewhat predictable, it’s actually anything but, and when Rorik steps in to save her, it’s a twist you didn’t see coming. In addition to the suspense is typical Rebecca Sharp steam. Rorik’s dirty mouth and creativity up the heat level exponentially.

This is another outstanding addition to the Covington Security series of standalones. The other books don’t have to be read in order to get the full enjoyment from this book.

It’s not that it is bad, it’s that I spent half the book thinking the H should get over himself already, instead of holding a « teenage breakup » over the h ´s head. That got old really fast

I was so excited about Rorik’s story, we were promised some hot hot moments, and this book did not disappoint!

Tenny and Rorik were high school sweethearts. They planned to go to college near each other, help Rorik follow his dreams to become a surgeon, and be together forever. The only problem is, Tenny’s dad doesn’t think that Rorik is a good enough man for her. So, in order to get Rorik to Harvard, Tenny breaks both of their hearts.

Flash to now- 19 years later. After what seems to be an accident under suspicious circumstances, Mr Tom Harper is on Dr Rorik Nilson’s autopsy table. Mr Harper’s widow comes to identify the body. Who is it? None other than Tenny Lewis.

The book has so much heart, pain, and joy in it. Tenny and Rorik have so much time apart, and so many things left unsaid. There is healing that needs to be done both by and for the other. I loved watching them both learn to trust the other with their secrets again. Their trysts back to the dim-lit corners of the library. The author had teased on her Instagram that chapter 17 was going to be fire, and it was!!

Seeing so much of Harm in this book makes me so excited for the upcoming MC series!!.

I have to be honest, I wasn’t as excited about Rorik’s story as I was about the rest of Covington. He was so cold and detached but once the story began to unfold and I found out all he had been through and why he was so cold, my heart warmed up to him.

Rorik and Tenille have a history and combining that with other things in his past, Rorik chose to be numb for years. It took Tenille being in trouble to bring him back to life and force him to feel again.

Their story was different from others, the mor— um medical bay — kind of freaked me out a little but I got over it and enjoyed the two of them finding their way back to each other.

I definitely recommend the entire Covington Security series and even though they can be read as stand alone books, they story line is so much better if read in order.

Each Covington book has me falling for this town and these men more and more and when the last book is written I’m going to cry so many tears!

Tenille and Roriks love story is not an easy one! From the start their love was laced with pain and their journey to not only love but forgiveness is an angsty one!

I loved how kind, loving and selfless Tenny is! She was so giving and was just a beautiful soul! Her love was endless and her strength had me in awe! Getting to know the broody, silent Rorik was more than I expected! He is so much more! His loyalty and strength had me falling for him head over heals from the start!

I love these books because they are packed with mystery, action and tons of heat!

Honestly the way the book was going I was genuinely surprised by the plot twist. I was almost expecting them not to sort out their issues and have that second chance the way they were carrying on with one another but it makes sense due to the amount of time that had passed and how they changed. I did also start the series in the middle so I recommend starting from the beginning to get a full picture of the group.

I'd like to preface this by saying that I have read (& reviewed) almost all of this author's past works, so when I tell you this one was a little bit much for me, I really mean it. I was really into the plot and everything else going on and then the spicy scenes hit.... Yikes. They definitely were not for me - at all. I don't believe in posting spoilers in reviews, so I won't say too much - let's just say they happen in a morgue/medical bay. No, just no. If that's your jam, then great - but for me, this one has made me question whether or not I want to continue this series when the next book comes out. We shall see. The 3 stars given to this book are solely for the plot and the appearances of previous books' characters.

This book was just everything! The emotional rollercoaster Rorik and Tenny took me on had me all in the feels!

Beginning with their love story amongst the stacks as high school sweethearts to the abrupt end of their relationship due to Tenille’s father. He didn’t believe Rorik was good enough for his daughter and therefore bought Rorik’s ride through college for his immediate dissolution of their relationship. He gave Tenille the ultimatum: her heart for his dream.

Fast forward 19 years and Tenille’s husband shows up dead in Rorik’s morgue. They come face to face when Tenille has to ID the body and it takes all the power in the world for Rorik to control his emotions. He has been essentially emotionless for the better half of the last decade and has so many personal demons to conquer from his past. Tenille wants nothing more than to repair and apologize for what happened but Rorik is not at a place to accept it.

While working through Mr. Harper’s autopsy, they discover he was involved with smuggling guns and drugs under the guise of his shipping company. This has put a target on Tenille’s back and Rorik will stop at nothing to protect her, even if he can’t let himself feel for her.

The spice was on par and had some very sexy scenes, two of which I have not read anywhere else and it was 🔥!

The journey of breaking through his walls, accepting his past and loss of a close friend during the war, and finally opening up to Tenille is one of the most beautiful scenes I have ever read! His description of needing her to bring him back to life….I shed some tears over this story and it hit hard!

The suspense and twists we come to love was here and the ending is perfect! This one has definitely topped the charts as my favorite!

Pleasant read with holes

Rorik was always a mystery to me. Why was he so closed off? We see a bit of his history seeing that he was originally a warm and caring person. He was hurt in high school by his girlfriend, Tenille, the heroine in this story. But even more so when one his squad members, Ryan, died when he was in the Green Berets. Those are the reasons why he’s so closed off. I’m sure we’ll learn more about Ryan in the Vigilantes series.

I did enjoy the read but too many things took me out of the story. I’m happy that Rorik & Tenille got together but the big bad just fit together too pat when the story needed to wrap up.

Spoilers coming…

I do like that Rorik thaws as time goes on. But there are SO many holes in this story. He had a scholarship to Harvard (see high school section) for medical school. But he later joins the Army AFTER medical school to pay for it? And when he’s in the special forces he’s only a sergeant? You join with a college degree; you are an officer! You join the service first for them to pay for your schooling. They’re not going to pay for it after the fact.

Tenille lives in a crappy apartment, but other characters from Carmel Cove series own condos in the same complex. I can’t see Chevy & Mic putting up with a place that looked bad on the outside. There are HOAs for that. So yes, her place could be bad inside but there wouldn’t be rusty stair railings outside. And the HOA wouldn’t allow a punching bag. The neighbors would have a fit.

Glen became what was needed to finish the story. Rorik getting shot…really? From being in special forces I’m sure he could’ve handled that better. I would’ve expected better of Kane too during the Glen situation too. Oh, well… And we can blame everything on a cartel or two.

This is a second chance romance story, this is the 8th book in the series. I had not read the previous books and found this book easy to read with out needing to read the previous ones, although I aim to do that soon.

Rorick and Tenny dated in high school, they planned to move away to attend college together, that is until Tenny's father gives her an ultimatum. Break up with him or he will put a stop to Rorick's scholarship.
Tenny loves Rorick too much to stop him from achieving his dreams, so she agrees to her father's terms, but doesn't realise that he has given Rorick the same ultimatum.
Years later they end up meeting up again when Tenny's husband is dead and Rorick is the one completing the autopsy on him.
Tenny hasn't been happy for years, but she has never forgotten her only love, Rorick. When they meet again, he is still attracted to her, but has closed himself off from others for so long and is still hurt from her actions years ago that he is cold and distant with her. He remains professional and sends her on her way. But soon his and his colleagues investigation into her husbands death and his dodgy business dealings brings them into contact again and again.
Can Rorick forgive Tenny when he finds out the reason that she left him years ago, can Tenny help Rorick heal from his past and find a way to be happy again, all while working out what happened to her husband and protecting her from the backlash of his death.

I enjoyed reading this book and would recommend it.

Hard-to-put-down multi-genre romance 5*
Rorik Nielsen and Tenille Harper were teenage sweethearts and had the kind of relationship that was platonic for all intents and purposes, their bond and emotional attachment were typical of what true soul-mates feel for each other. We all know though that the road to hell is paved with good intentions, which is exactly where the young lovers were condemned to when her rich and influential father blackmails the young lovers to give each other up. This forms the background to the storyline which will make it clear that the result is a pair of heartbroken teenagers. Fast forward 19 years when the protagonists meet again under unexpected circumstances. They are bitter, lonely, and heartbroken, and their sacrifice all those years ago didn't actually help either of them. They are thrown together by strange circumstances, yet they are unable to open up and talk about their painful past and separation. Neither knows what her manipulative father had done to separate the lovers. This book is a slow-burn love story, which although gives the readers a HEA, it does so slowly, stripping away their walls and defenses, and exposing their souls to the painful regret of their lost happiness. They lost the most beautiful young years of their lives and the book brilliantly describes their tentative and cautious steps which eventually lead them back to each other. I most highly recommend this well-written, thoughtful novel which feels equally at home in the genre of a steamy romance as well as a crime story.

I enjoyed the storyline and found it entertaining; however, I had some difficulty engaging with the characters.

Prior to this book, Rorik has been a background character who only appeared when a medical examiner was needed. And even though dead bodies happen pretty routinely in this series, Rorik stayed very much in the shadows and sidelines. As a character he never grabbed my attention in those previous books unlike the more colorful guys at Covington do.

Rorik’s past turned him into someone totally disinterested in living or connecting with those around him - he exists. This was a pretty steep obstacle to overcome for me to then see him as a romantic hero.

I also had some challenges liking Tenny. We see the effect of her Dad’s manipulative actions, but what happened in the next 19 years and who did she become before marrying Tom Harper? She came across as a poor little rich girl in my opinion.

I loved the plot and storyline, it’s creative and suspenseful- it just took me some effort to stay engaged because of my issues with the Rorik and Tenny. The suspense around who really was the bad guy, was Tenny’s husband murdered or not, who is after her and more made this a good read. I always enjoy the camaraderie and banter among the Covington crew.

Overall this was a good read. I’m excited about the next book in the series and a related series about the Vigilante MC and Remington.

Rorik and Tennille

This book was a lot more emotional than the rest of the series has been. It started with Tennille’s sacrifice and then almost two decades later, Rorik’s story as it was laid out was even more heartbreaking. Rorik and Tennille had lived through a lot in the years they were separated, and they both had a lot of baggage to get through.

There was a lot of back and forth between Rorik and Tennille. I loved that Tennille stood up for herself, and while I understood why Rorik had such mixed feelings about knowing the truth, I thought he needed the truth before they could move forward. I loved how Tennille was able to get Rorik to open up again and bring him back to life. I loved the symbolism used when Rorik gave his truth to Tennille.

Rorik was the most badass medical examiner I’ve ever read. He tried so hard to shut down his emotions, but when it came to Tennille, he couldn’t help himself. He was gruff and protective, but once Tennille got him to open up, he became so much more.

This was a great addition to the series and was fun to read about the mysterious medical examiner. I loved getting to see some of the previous couples as well as getting a glimpse into the final book in this series as well as the upcoming series featuring Harmon and the Green Berets Rorik served with.

The Covington Security series is one of my favorite Rebecca series. Most of the books are excellent. Some were not my most favorite. But this one ranks up there! I LOVE a second chance romance and this one perfectly encapsulates that trope. Rorik has been a quiet behind-the-scenes character throughout the Covington books and even seeps a little in the Carmel Cove series. He was always an enigma when he appeared and he was always written in such a way that the burn to know more about him just grew every time he made an appearance.

And now we know his whole story and everything about his character just makes so much sense. There is such angst in this story telling, and it has echos of Jane Austen’s Persuasion story to it (with a different spin) which I just adored. You see Rorik and Tenny’s story told in real time and flashbacks which leads the reader on a roller coaster of emotions. Rebecca always seems to mould her story telling around themes heavily pertinent to the main characters so it’s no surprise that death, living, and rebirth are metaphorical (and sometimes literal) constant themes throughout the story. Which is what makes it such great writing. Highly recommend this read!.

This is a great second chance romance and it gives us the reasons coroner Rorik Nilsen is so closed off emotionally. Tenny was his high school sweetheart who broke his heart so he could pursue his dreams, but she always loved him. Rorik closes himself off after not only losing Tenny but then losing a brother in arms that he feels he should have saved. Tenny walks into his morgue to identify her husbands body and you can feel the tension and pain oozing off the page. All Tenny can think is to explain that decision long ago that changed both their lives , but Rorik doesn’t want to hear it, however he will protect her from an unknown enemy.
The emotions of hurt, pain, redemption and love as well as fear jump off the pages and bring tears to the eye hoping they can find a way back to each other as they have never loved anyone else. There is gun smuggling, drug smuggling and a surprise player on the board that continue to bring them closer together. This is a great can’t put down read with so many nuances you aren’t going to want to miss this one.

I absolutely loved Bargained Book 8 of Covington Security. We finally get Rorik’s story and it does not disappoint. Rorik had his heart broken by Tenille when they were in higher school and it scared him for life. What he didn’t know is she did it so he could have the future he wanted because her father would ruin his life. When Tenille shows up to identify the body of her husband Rorik is blown away. His anger barely containable. He takes his anger out on Tenille because he doesn’t know the truth. As the investigation into her husband continues they question wether she was involved or is she telling the truth? When the truth finally comes out what will Rorik do? Can he finally have the future he wanted or will he’s demons keep him and Tenille from having a future together? Such an amazing story and I just loved these characters. I love this series so much. They are so hard to put down. I would definitely recommend this book and the whole series.

Rorik had dreams of being a surgeon but life has a way of changing your path. He is now chief medical examiner for the city, and also works for Covington Security. He never expects a body on his examining table to lead him back to the person who caused him such heartbreak, the victim's wife and his high school sweetheart, Tenille.

Tenille has never loved anyone other Rorik, but he father blackmailed her into breaking things off with him their senior year. When she goes to identify her husband, he is the last person she expected to see, he was supposed have been a surgeon. He looks at her so cold.

As the team starts to find out the things Tenille's husband was involved, they are not sure if she was as well. The more they investigate the more they find that she is in danger. Can Rorik stand back and not protect her? When will he be able to admit he never stopped loving her?.

Wow oh wow this was an incredible read. Rorik and Tenille had promised each other forever when they graduated from high school. Rorik had a dream of becoming a surgeon. He didn’t come from a wealthy family like she did but he was very intelligent . When he receives notice that he has obtained a full scholarship to Harvard, he is excited. Tenille plans to go with him to Boston. Only her father doesn’t approve of Rorik and he blackmails Tenille into breaking up with Rorik. He paid for the scholarship and can take it back and ruin his dreams. She broke both of their hearts with her decision. Now 19 yrs later their paths cross and the pain and heartache is still there as well as the deep feelings. A very well written storyline that keeps your interest from page 1 to the last. The characters are so real and believable. Loved this addition to the series.

As high-school seniors, Rorik Nilsen and Tenille Harper had a plan and the world at their feet, his dream of being a top surgeon with her at his side. But her dad wasn’t pleased that Rorik’s family was multiple levels below her on the status scale. Dad told Rorik and Tenille separately he’d ensure Rorik’s free ride through medical school at Harvard if they would only give up each other and never speak again. It partially went according to plan.

Over a decade later, as Rorik performed an autopsy on Tenille’s husband, Tom Harper, candidate for governor. She was there to identify the body. Rorik was cold and uninterested in whatever Tenille had to say. Investigating Tom, the team finds cause to worry, the attention of a drug and an arms cartel. Wanting a reason to remain angry with Tenille, Rorik insists she’s involved. She tries again and again, not realizing there’s more drama wrapped in his refusal.

Rorick chooses to deal with the dead over the living - as a medical examiner, he knows that he can always find the truth with his craft. The dead don’t lie like the living and Rorick has been lied to too many times to forget that. He’s content to keep his past pains locked away until she walks into his morgue. Tenny. The woman who broke his heart and told him the biggest lie. She needs his help after her estranged husband appears to be caught up with the cartel and they’re looking to her to settle the score.

I don’t like second chance romances because I feel the resolution is too simple and fast or doesn’t appropriately match the reason for the separation in the first place. Rorick and Tenny’s relationship and reason for the initial breakup didn’t bother me. The editing of this book was a bit off. There were scenes that seemingly bled into the wrong sequence and conversations that felt unfinished so 3/5 even though I liked the plot generally.

Fantastic story. We go through a journey with Rorik and Tenielle, through their origin to their meeting almost two decades later. We see the absolute heartbreak and devastation they have both experienced without the other, and the pain of meeting again. They is a lot of tension, pulling and tugging, rollercoaster of emotions and pure angst with these two. At times you want to scream at Rorik to stop hiding and at times you want to scream at Tenielle that she needs to walk away (to make him chase her of course, not give up entirely). Really intriguing the link between Rorik and Harem, only gives more mystery to those guys. And of course, the entire drama around Tenielle and discovering who is after her and why. Plus, we get heat, love and a HEA. Perfect combo. It is a wild ride, and as always brilliantly written. Thoroughly enjoyed, and cannot wait more.

Well I certainly wasn't expecting this! Rebecca Sharp is one of my Go To authors and I have loved the whole of the Covington Securiry series, however I never felt I knew anything about Rorik, he has always been a side character.
Oh my goodness once I started to get to know Rorik, I fell in love with him as I have the rest of the team.
The development of the characters and their relationship is (as always) a real strength of this author. The background plot made for an exciting roller coaster of a ride that I couldn't put down. This book is a really well crafted steamy romance with excitement and drama at every turn. I highly recommend this book, it was great to catch up with previous characters from the series but this book could equally be enjoyed as a standalone. Keep writing Rebecca Sharp, I will certainly be at the front of the queue!

The crew at Covington Security always deliver the suspense, drama and passion. Rorik and Tenile found love in high school but Tenile’s dad didn’t approve and pulled out all the stops to break them up. It’s 19 years later when they see each other again when Tenny has to identify her husband at the morgue. Rorik is just as surprised to have his sanctuary invaded with the one woman he’s never stopped loving. As the mystery about Tenny’s husband’s death and his business dealings put her in danger, Rorik knows he can’t walk away and needs to help her solve the mystery. But can he keep his heart closed off? Or will she find the key to unlock all the guilt and pain he carries to allow him to truly love again? There is so much to love about all the twists and turns in this story that kept me captivated to the very end. I voluntarily read an ARC of this book and this is my honest review.

I enjoyed this book and thought the fact Rorik was a medical examiner placed a different spin on things.

No less growly or protective, Rorik was well portrayed as a man done wrong who had then seen the worst of the world and not coped well.
Tenny did frustrate me a little, I felt she was a little “poor me” even though ultimately she had made the choice years ago and found someone and gotten married - even if he ended up being a baddy.

Intruiging storyline with lots of side characters, the MC caught my attention as well as Remington so I’ll be looking out for those books.

The storyline with the father felt like it was unfinished…I felt like Rorik hinted more had been done after Tenny broke off with him but nothing seems to come from it.

Engaging story and a worthwhile read.

Rorik & Tenille were high school sweethearts but then her father stepped in and told her to leave Rorik and he would set Rorik up with support for college. Nineteen years later they reconnect when Rorik is the one doing the autopsy on her husband. He is medical examiner and also works for Covington Security who now jumps in to help him protect her from connections her husband had.
Loved all the characters and so happy to see them again in action. This book wraps you up in the secrets, revelations, hidden agendas, twists, danger, drugs and gun smuggling, old hurts, military trauma, and some much needed new growth and forgiveness in their lives. From heart pounding to happy tears right up to the ending. Well done and a credit to the series.

Hoping for a Second Chance ? . . .

Rorik Nilsen is the Chief Medical Examiner and fits in some jobs for the Covington Security team. When his former high school sweetheart Tenille Harper shows up to identify her deceased husband, Rorik re-lives all that pain again when she broke up with him. She wants to explain, but he is not interested at this point. But when she is in danger, he will protect her without hesitation.

There is much going on behind the scenes, but the reader can feel the deep feelings these two still have. Their love deserves a second chance. But will they let themselves begin to heal so they can give it a try? Or will their fight for survival keep them preoccupied? The author does a wonderful job at keeping up the suspense, so grab your copy and dive into the excitement.

Dr. Rebecca Sharp hits another one out of the park with her new book, Bargained.
Can Rorik and Tenille get over the hurts from the past in order to fight for their future amidst the danger lurking in the present?
The spice this author brings along with her amazing story lines is unmatched!
If you're looking for a world where the hero is a protective alpha but loves deeply, this is a series you don't want to pass up.
And though they can be read as stand alones, you're going to want to read the entire Covington Security Series. It's fantastic writing that will make you laugh, blush and maybe even sweat a little (in the BEST possible way!)
Don't miss out. You NEED this series (Yes, I love it that much!).

Tenny thought letting Rorik go was for the best: he would achieve his goal to become a surgeon. They both are damaged souls just existing and have no relief from their tortured lives. She’s in danger, a widow, and heartbroken. He can’t trust her but he will protect her from himself and anyone who tries to hurt her.

Dr Sharp crafts stores that engage the reader with outstanding characters, dialogue that develops the plot, and amazingly steamy, erotic sex. Tenny and Rorik have this sexual tension that blazes into a supremely decadent fire. So good together if they can work through their traumas, tragedies, and denials. This was a great addition to this series.
