My goodness, this author truly knows how to pull at my heartstrings and expertly torment me. The pain and suffering that her protagonists endure is not just fleeting—it is an incredibly drawn-out, intense experience that lingers in my mind long after putting the book down.

From the very beginning, this novel presents itself as a complicated tapestry of emotions and events. The plot is filled with an abundance of twists and turns that keep me on the edge of my seat, often leading me to feelings of confusion and bewilderment. While I grasped the main narrative thread, it became evident that the story has deeper layers and an array of secrets waiting to be unraveled, which only heightened my curiosity.

The characters, despite their depth, frustrated me at times, leading me to moments where I felt like tearing my hair out. Yet, paradoxically, I found myself growing attached to each one of them in a way that I didn’t expect. Mo Xi stands out as a particularly compelling character; his soft heart and vulnerability tugged at my emotions, making me root for him immensely. It is heartbreaking to witness his struggles, as he navigates through overwhelming pain while desperately yearning for love. He employs his cold, stoic exterior as a protective barrier, especially in his interactions with Gu Mang.

Speaking of Gu Mang, he left me with a whirlwind of mixed emotions. His flirtatious, shameless demeanor initially makes him seem untrustworthy, but beneath this facade lies a really good man. His profound desire to protect those he loves reveals a depth of character that surprised me, and I could sense a genuine care for others even amid his own turmoil.

The relationship between Mo Xi and Gu Mang is incredibly intricate, fraught with complications and undeniably unhealthy dynamics. Yet, this complexity is exactly what makes their connection so addictive and engrossing. In this first installment of the series, their relationship is heavily laden with secrets and unanswered questions. I still find myself pondering the extent of their past connection and how deep Gu Mang’s feelings for Mo Xi truly run. It is this tantalizing mystery that enhances the author’s writing, making it all the more captivating.

I have a strong inkling that the author has many more heart-wrenching moments lined up as the story unfolds. Admittedly, maybe I’m a masochist for feeling this way, but I can hardly contain my excitement for what lies ahead. I just know that their love story will be worth enduring all the angst that seems inevitable.

In conclusion, this novel was a rollercoaster of frustration and emotion, leaving a lasting impact on me, and I can’t wait to dive into volume 2 to see how the story continues to develop.

YUWU appreciation post!
Just in case, if you are interested, this story takes place years, maybe centurie -well nobody is certain cause is a lot of time!- before the events of "The husky and his white cat shizun" so it's set in the same universe, but YuWu events or story line are prior of what happens with the story of Chu Wanning and Mo Ran, so sorry to dissapoint they dont get to interact. However I highly recommend to read first " the husky" so when you read this one, you will find some easter eggs and have a better reading experience ofc! but if you dont do it, thats okay it doesnt matter that much, 💓👋

Also, rumor has it that yuwu is way sadder than 2ha... I'll leave that up to you!

Rated S for spoilers!!
Not really much plot spoilers, I mostly talk just about their relationship.

I almost made the same mistake with Yuwu as I almost did with SVSSS. Meaning that I was thinking about skipping it because it's not that popular/ nobody is talking about it. I mean, I get it, I love 2ha very much, ranwan is probably my favorite couple, the story is so extra and the pain is so tragically beautiful. But Yuwu is actually just as good. I'm already so invested in the story and I love ximang very much and I have to say that so far it has been almost even more tragic (it seems Meatbun thought that she didn't traumatize her readers enough yet 😭)

The story takes place in the same universe as 2ha but a couple of centuries(?) earlier. Despite that it's recommend to read it after 2ha. So far, there hasn't been much of connection mentioned except for Ji Ba naming, lol (Mo Ran, you haven't dissapointed Wangba army soldiers 😆) but I'm really curious to discover more.

Anyway, let'a continue with the charachters. I'll start with Gu Mang and I think it's not a surprise I got attached to him first. Give me the most pathetic, wet looking meow meow, and I'll be 'yes, that's my baby!' *carefully putting Gu Mang in a little box inside my pocket beside Shen Qiao, Chu Wanning and Tantai Jin* What can I say, guess I'm that predictable.

But seriously, he's such a precious person and he didn't deserve all those horrible things that happened to him. Being slave born, he didn't have much choices for a bright future but he still became a briliant cultivator and achived status of a general. He sacrificed so much for the people around him but faith was still so cruel to him. I absolutely do not blame him for defecting because I simply don't see what other possibilities were left for him, if he wanted to stay true to himself. I only want for him to be left alone from all these nasty people that are hurting him when he's literally down.

The reason it took me so long for Mo Xi to grow on me, is that he's actually one of the people hurting my baby 😢 I do understand how he feels. After all, Gu Mang betrayed him, and not just that, he almost killed him. So yeah, I get it that he wants revenge. Not just because he betrayed him politically but also emotionally. He left him behind and alone, after all the things they've been through together. Later on, we learn how much was he was willing to sacrifice for them to be together. And he completely won me over with how adorably confused and happy he was, realizing that he's in love with his shixiong.

Wait for me. I'll do my best - upon battlefields of blood, I'll make my name, I'll use all my war-won merits for the right to be with you. Wait for me.
I'll give you a home.
Mo Xi's past self had fervently - naively - made this promise in his heart.
[...]
Gu Mang, wait a little longer for me... won't you...?

However, love cannot always solve everything. I know Mo Xi tried to do his best and that he risked his status, position, and reputation, but Gu Mang risked his life for them to be together. And I think that Mo Xi just never truly tried to understand that. Yes, we find out that he also had miserable childhood, that he haven't had it easy in life. We learn all about his sacrifices, especially the ones he made when Gu Mang already left. Maybe I'm just biased toward Gu Mang but in my opinion he doesn't deserve such a strong hate Mo Xi had for him. And considering Mo Xi has upper position again with Gu Mang being a war prisoner.

Fanart by 66PATCH

What is especially tragic about their relationship is that they were actually already quite happy together in the past (if we overlook Gu Mang being a slave and that tehnically they shouldn't be togehter).

Then he darted close and kissed Mo Xi's cheek.
Mo Xi didn't move.
"How come my princess isn't reacting?" Gu Mang murmured, stroking Mo Xi's chin. "Another kiss, then."
[...]
After a strech of silence, Mo Xi said, his face still turned, "I haven't seen you in two months."
"No. Still twelve days to go."
Mo Xi's head snapped around, shooting Gu Mang another fierce glare.

Look how cute they were. Gu Mang calling Mo Xi a princess! And Mo Xi being petulant because he thought that he was the only one pining after his lover.

So, it's even more painfull to watch them being mortal enemies now 😭😭 well, only from Mo Xi's point of view, since Gu Mang lost his memories.

Fanart by etroveria

"Have I hit you before?"
Momentarily confused, Gu Mang shook his head.
"Has he hit you before?"
Gu Mang nodded.
"Then listen to me and ignore him."
They were too close together, the air from the depths of their lungs tangling between their bodies. Mo Xi deliberateley avoided his clear-eyed gaze. "As long as you listen, I'll make him scram."
Another wordless nod.

There's still a lot we don't know about Gu Mang. Are his memories truly lost? Why did he chose Liao Kingdom? Does he still care about Mo Xi? Because we know that Mo Xi does! No matter the hate, no matter how much he doesn't want to, he very much does!!

Only after recovering for several seconds did he speak again, his words clipped with hatred. "I was never the person who didn't care. It was you. I wish I could --"
He stopped.
Gu Mang had reached out, carefully and hesistantly cupping Mo Xi's face. "Don't... Don't be so sad," he said.
Mo Xi whipped around, meeting those limpid blue eyes that looked like they had been washed with seawater. "I don't know what you are talking about."
"But can you... not be so sad?" Gu Mang said slowly and with difficulty, pausing slowly at each word. "Don't be sad."

Fanart by 66PATCH

I'm not crying, you're crying 😭😭😭 as I said, the most tragic thing about their story is that they bascially went from alright to worse. At least in 2ha, ranwan had a horrible past and are getting better in the present, while ximang are getting... well, not better 😭😭😭 but Mo Xi is slowly melting, so there's still hope ✨

As Gu Mang's limbs gradually began to recover, he unconciously began to shudder, his bloody hands quivering incessantly.
After a long while, Gu Mang started to mumble. "I... don't know... I don't know... anything..."
[...]
Other than Gu Mang's half-concious mumbling, there were no other sounds in the Chamber of Ice. Eventually, amid this hush, Mo Xi heard him mutter something new:
"I...want, I want... a..."
Mo Xi was stunned. "What?"
Gu Mang's voice softened further, almost as faint as a mosquito's buzz. Tearful, trembling, shaking: "home..."
This final word drifted down, soft as willow fluff, but it exploded in Mo Xi's ears like a clap of thunder.

Honestly, this scene was everything!! (Mo Xi left him his coat!!! 🥰🥰🥰) And he always takes such good care of him whenever Gu Mang is hurt. Now, let's just work on not letting him get hurt in the first place. *sigh*

He gazed into Gu Mang's eyes. Gu Mang had collapsed, limp in his arms.
Mo Xi had a sudden irrrepressible urge to press his head to Gu Mang's clammy forehead, like he had long ago, before anything had broken beyond repair. To caress Gu Mang's sweat-soaked brow and tell him.
Don't worry, you'll be all right once the curse is broken, I'll stay with you...
I'll stay with you.

He stroked Gu Mang's hair, softly coaxing him, "It's okay, it's okay... It's all over now... all over now..."
The pain was over.
If only their debts and hatred could be so easily cast away. If only the chasm between them could be closed as quickly as the end of this agony. If only.
He held and comforted the trembling man in his arms. No one saw; even Mo Xi himslef was unwilling to bear witness, closing his eyes before gently laying a kiss at the top of Gu Mang's head.

I'm just gonna briefly mention Murong Lian, former Gu Mang's owner (actually, I think he still owns him) because I hate his guts. Seriously, this guy gets on my nerves so much! I have to admit, he's an interesting charachter but I wish I could drown him in a spoon. I just hope the author will not redeem him in the future or make me feel sorry for him, because I'm completley content with hating him. But... I have to say it would be very funny if he's gonna be the reason ximang will get back together. Because it seems he's really determined to get Mo Xi to confess his feelings.

"Xihe-jun, even with all these peerless beauties before you, you want neither the women nor the men. Ah, I think-" He smiled maliciously. "The one you yearn for... is actually your enemy, isn't it?"

I have no idea who this is. The mysterious Fourth Uncle, Murong Chuyi. But he looks very dashing in this ilustrations and Yue Chenqing is so obsessed with him, so let's give him a chance to prove himself.

Vol 2, don't hurt me too much, please?!

having read Erha, i had a rough idea of what i was getting into with this novel, considering it’s set in the same universe but prior to Erha, packed with references and notoriously all Meatbun novels come with napkins as a gift. i don’t know about everyone else, but i was absolutely SOBBING. for a couple of days, the world was lost to me and i was lost to others.

the plot is simple: nothing is simple... the story throws a bunch of questions at you, the answers to which you just sit and wait. basically the emperor had two generals, brothers-in-arms who had been through fire, water and presumably survived enough drama to last several lifetimes. but then, one of them, Gu Mang, did the unthinkable, he betrayed his country and defected to the enemy. fast forward a few years, and Liao Kingdom ships him back as a peace offering, where the emperor gets to decide his fate. angst incoming.

Mo Xi is a fascinating blend of cold rationality and barely contained fury, all wrapped up in one very broody package. he’s reserved, unless Gu Mang is involved, in which case, good luck. every emotion plays out on his face, no matter how hard he tries to hide it. a man of singular devotion, which is painfully romantic but, under the current circumstances, mostly just painful. he's also very long-legged. and when i say "long-legged," i mean Meatbun will not let you forget it. atp i regret not keeping a tally of how many times his legs have been mentioned. now i want to know their length! ahem... let's move on.

Gu Mang is character who immediately manages to win the reader's attention. his recklessness extends to his actions, after which he gets into a lot of trouble. he is the most cheerful and optimistic person, an incredibly talented one too, who climbed from rags to riches, and then back again... despite his miserable slave position, he tries with all his might to help others to his own detriment. after returning from Liao, he lost part of his soul (literally!) and now exists in this strange limbo between man and snow wolf. but thankfully he hasn’t lost his ability to keep me entertained, which one can deeply appreciate.

if i had to pick a favorite, it would be Murong Chuyi, because, well, i love Chu Wanning. but special mention goes to Li Wei, who moved the plot along so effortlessly, without ever making a big show of it

pre-read:
no because what was meatbun on when she wrote yuwu😭

Light was something you gave me; warmth was something you brought me. All the blood that races through my heart is because of you.

Mo Xi, your struggle is real. Your love is deep. Your hatred even deeper. Yet, sometimes I still want to shake you because of how stupid and blind you are!

Gu Mang had reached out, carefully and hesitantly cupping Mo Xi’s face. “Don’t… Don’t be so sad,” he said.

Gu Mang, your defection is still a mystery. But the man that you were makes me love you to the moon and back.

“Gege wants you. How could I not want you?”

What can I say, I like to torture myself and call it entertainment.

This was recommended by a friend to be my first danmei and ugh, I'M SO HAPPY IT WAS EVEN IF I SUFFERED THROUGH SO MUCH PAIN. It was such a good pain!! ALL THE EMOTIONS I FELT. 😭Definitely a roller coaster and I loved the pining and angst and self-loathing and everything Mo Xi was experiencing and witnessing. I kid you not, I sat down tonight and was like, "I'm going to just get started on it," and then 3-4 hours later found myself being at the end. I just could not put this down. 😂

It wa SO tough at times and there were so many chapters where I was literally like, "NOOO, poor Gu Mang" the entire time. But this first volume set up a really good foundation and the bigger plot is so interesting as well!!! I can't wait to see how things develop in the next volume. 🥰 There were sooooo many wonderful and delicious moments here and I really can't wait to see how the dynamics develop and also what we learn from the past as well.

MEATBUN DID IT AGAIN!!! yuwu really captured my attention from the very start 🙌🏻 it is about two comrades in arms Mo Xi and Gu Mang who "fall in love" with one another but it is a relationship doomed from the start 😭 and on top of it all, Gu Mang defects towards the enemy leaving Mo Xi hurt and betrayed behind 💔 but Gu Mang returns seemingly not remembering himself and Mo Xi which causes pain with both men 💔 honestly the connection these two characters have is so different from other danmei I read YET they belong with each other 💞 I am hoping for Gu Mang to REMEMBER everything because the memories Mo Xi has about them is so sweet yet heartbreaking 😭💗 (also some spicy scenes included 🔥)

I was not expecting this story to be as dark and angsty as it was. 😭 Nevermind the emotional, mental, and spiritual abuse that Gu Mang had to endure his entire life, the sheer amount of physical abuse he had to put up with was sickening. It was hard listening to Mo Xi’s grievances against him when it didn’t seem like he fully understood just how harsh his life was. He was a slave with incredible natural talent. He outshined his master and was ruthlessly punished for it. Even when he was needed in war against their enemies, the people of Chonghua still looked down on him. He wasn't respected, and his accomplishments earned him nothing.

Even though I know there has to be more to why Gu Mang defected, honestly, after risking my life to defend the nation as one of its greatest generals, only to be stripped of my title and denied burial of my fallen brothers, all because I was born a slave...I’d want to do the same thing. While Mo Xi was getting his accolades and worrying about when they were going to meet up again, Gu Mang was spiraling. I don't know if Mo Xi could have done anything to stop him from going down the path he took, but he certainly didn't seem to be helping. Even though I liked him, he frequently came across as insensitive and unaware.

Despite how painful this was to read, I really enjoyed it. The plot immediately grabbed my attention - not something that usually happens with the first volume of a danmei - and the pacing was so good that I never felt bored. The mystery comcerning Li Qingqian is just beginning, and I'm curious to see why he's changed so much over the years and what connection, if any, he has with Gu Mang beyond the events of this book. 4 stars

I like the plot but it was pretty slow going like many of these books are. The characters and the way the book is written was good. But I feel like something is missing and that the romance isn’t the best.

"I will give you a home. I want to stay with you, always. [...] Wait a little longer for me... won't you…?""

F*ck meatbun who always delivers the best characters 🥲

I thought Erha was heart wrecking enough. But no, she had to write another masterpiece. And I feel this will be worse for my soul (although shorter).

Mo Xi, the protagonist in this book might be my favourite MC of most danmeis I've read. He falls in the cliche of 'stoic, serene men' that deep down are just horny bastards. But here, we see that he loses control easily and has quite some rage inside him.
I think it's soon to say that, but I love him. He's just tired of losing people he loves.

Gu Mang is the other main character. My god, does he suffer a lot. When you think he's gonna be a little bit better, NO, he gets stabbed, poisoned, drugged or anything worse. And -minor spoilers here - he fucking loses his memory?? When they are finally reunited?? And now he thinks he's a wolf and no a human? And he is now a prostitute what I can't-

The supporting characters aren't bad either but the book is very centered in the two mains -no complaints here- so we don't see much of them.

Boy did a cry with this book. It wasn't even forced. All flashbacks were so tender, so cute and you just compare it with the present... Not a funny thing at all. I even cried with the little smut scene because they said so many things that never got accomplished 🥲

I've been rumbling a lot so I'll stop here. I know some people will find this book disturbing because of the heavy mature themes that are addressed here. I really didn't mind, the author just wrote them perfectly.

Go to Hell Seven seas for not publishing the next book until October 😠

"One could have said that he'd lived twenty-seven years without ever making a single mayor mistake. Except for Gu Mang. [He] was like ink on paper or mud in snow, the suggestive smear of blood left upon the pristine white of a gentleman's bedsheets. He was the stain on Mo Xi's life. "

I really struggled to rate this one because I'm very torn about it. I feel like this book has SO MUCH POTENTIAL, but this actual BOOK was not my fave. Maybe it was because it was so hyped up for me, but this just really fell flat - I've been told it gets better later, which is why I'm holding out hope though!

But, I just found these characters very lackluster - I guess I was expecting a similar unique, fun, quirky cast of characters as we get in Erha where every character is very unique and fleshed out and truly feel like their own person, and you can see how/why each of them is important. But, in this, I honestly disliked or didn't care for every single character besides Mo Xi - but even he annoyed me tbh. I also fuckin HATED Murong Lian - not because he's a bad person but he was SUCH a lame "villain." He was so stereotypical and had absolutely zero depth to him.

I also think this honestly went in a very odd direction. I found the beginning fascinating but after it was revealed that , I honestly thought it was kind of lame. I feel like the whole fun behind this premise that I was excited for was .

I also found this to be a LOT of tell rather than show. It felt like every chapter was just repeating over and over and over AND OVER about the same part of their past and EXPLAINING that gu Mang and Mo Xi were close rather than actually showing us it through flashbacks or anything. Honestly, it felt like this story should have started a lot earlier... I feel like I just don't really care about what's happening because I don't care about Gu Mang/Mo Xi or their history/backstory together because I've only been TOLD about it.

But, I'll be trying volume 2 right away to see if this story gets any better - I have high hopes!!

Honestly, I’m not entirely sure how I feel about this book. On the one hand, the overall story was very interesting. I really enjoyed the action, the depth of emotion and most of the premise. My main problem with this book was that the amount of torture, degradation and abuse heaped on one of the main characters, Gu Mang, was a bit too excessive for my liking. I also felt that many of the characters were difficult to connect with for various reasons.

During the present day events of the plot, Gu Mang is broken in both mind and spirit. He acts more animistic than human. Because of this, his reactions and speech are very stilted. It’s obviously difficult to have any type of significant character progression for someone in such a state. Most meaningful character development for Gu Mang is shown through brief flashbacks and Mo Xi’s recollections of the past. Meanwhile, the current Gu Mang doesn’t feel like much of a presence in the story. For the most part, he’s just kind of there. His only purpose in the story thus far mostly seems to be to act as the driving behind the main conflict as well as the actions of the surrounding characters. For the most part, Gu Mang has no agency beyond a very basic instinctive desire for food and safety. I imagine that this likely changes at some later point in the series, but for now Gu Mang is a very passive character in the progression of the plot. Most of the time he is simply getting abused, tortured and demeaned by other characters.

This leads me to the main aspect that I disliked about this book. The torture and humiliation of Gu Mang is absolutely excessive. Not only is it upsetting to read but it is overdone to the point of becoming tedious. It was so prevalent that I often felt like it overshadowed and interrupted the flow of the plot. Just when the story seemed to be picking up it was once again derailed by another scene of torture or debasement, usually at the hands of the utterly despicable Murong Lian. Luckily, this did start to get a bit better towards the end of the book when more emphasis seemed to be placed on plot progression rather than unrelenting torture.

As for the other main character, Mo Xi, I have very mixed feelings about him. On the one hand, I understand his feelings of betrayal from someone whom he trusted and cared about so deeply. Gu Mang defected to a kingdom of evil demonic cultivators who are known for their brutality, dark magic and cannibalistic tendencies. He killed his former allies and innocents alike as well as very nearly killing Mo Xi himself. However, I don’t feel like Mo Xi puts enough thought into why Gu Mang did these things.

It is mentioned at one point in the book that Mo Xi does understand Gu Mang’s reasoning to an extent. It’s not so much that he blames Gu Mang for defecting but rather for defecting to the evil Liao Kingdom of all places. Still, I don’t think that Mo Xi has a true understanding of the utter despair that Gu Mang experienced prior to his defection. Mo Xi cares about Gu Mang a great deal but, as a privileged young master, I don’t think that he can ever fully understand or empathize with the terrible reality of Gu Mang’s life as a slave. Mo Xi doesn’t know how it feels to be treated like property, tormented daily and beaten whenever his master feels like it. He doesn’t understand what it’s like to have all of his achievements and status simply brushed aside and stripped away at the whim of an uncaring emperor as if it were nothing. Nor does he know what it’s like for his brothers in arms, who sacrificed their lives for the nation, to be thrown aside and discarded like so much unwanted garbage after they’ve outlived their usefulness just because they were slaves. I do not think that Mo Xi fully appreciates the catastrophic toll something like that can take on a person’s mental state.

I also can’t comprehend why Mo Xi never considered the possibility that the Liao Kingdom used their democratic arts to manipulate Gu Mang in some way. Given Mo Xi’s extensive experience with the Liao Kingdom, overlooking this possibility seems like an enormous lapse in judgment. This is even more so the case after Mo Xi learns that Gu Mang’s mind and souls have been tampered with by the Liao Kingdom. How does it never occur to Mo Xi that this could have been done prior to Gu Mang committing all those atrocities? During the confrontation where Gu Mang nearly killed Mo Xi, he certainly didn’t appear to be acting like himself. It seems reasonable to assume that Gu Mang might have been manipulated by some spell or ritual performed by the Liao Kingdom. But I digress.

Despite my complaints, the story of Remnants of Filth is undeniably compelling. The world is fascinating, if extremely dark. I loved how the action sequences were written. Mo Xi’s spiritual weapon, Shuairan, which is able to transform into multiple forms, was particularly cool. Although I love both wuxia and xianxia, I definitely have a slight preference for xianxia. I really enjoy the fantasy aspects and the inclusion of things like gods, ghosts and demons. Cultivation is also something that I really enjoy, particularly when the characters possess spiritual powers that manifest as magical abilities and spells rather than just martial arts techniques.

Meatbun also does an excellent job of creating tension, deeply emotional conflict, and impactful character interactions. Though Gu Mang is stilted due to his current condition, Mo Xi’s inner turmoil is both palpable and deeply compelling. While I may have mixed feelings about Mo Xi as a character, I was still moved by his overwhelming pain and longing. I just really wish that we could get Gu Mang’s side of things as well.

One character whom I definitely have to give a shoutout to is Yue Chenqing. He definitely gave some much needed levity and comic relief to a story that is otherwise extremely dark and serious. He’s honestly kind of adorable and I really hope to see more of him in the future. Although, for some reason I can’t help worrying that something terrible might happen to him later on. Maybe it’s just all the angst going on. For some reason it doesn’t seem like this plot would be kind to someone so naive and happy go lucky.

In any event, though I was initially on the fence about it, I’ve definitely decided that I want to continue with this series. It has very much peaked my curiosity and left me with so many questions. I very much want to know the truth behind what happened to Gu Mang and what ultimately made him do the things that he did. What secret plot might the Liao Kingdom even now be hatching? What will happen between Gu Mang and Mo Xi? Who will win custody of Gu Mang? Mo Xi or the detestable Murong Lian? These are all questions that I very much want to see answered.

The story has good bones, but book one was not as tight as 2ha's first book and too slow going for me. Nevertheless both MO Xi and Gu Mang are dreamboats 🥰

Book started off alright and the conflict between the two intrigued me. However, as I continued reading I found myself getting more and more frustrated with the main character. He’s constantly repeating things and is honestly quite dense. The author felt the need for some reason to remind me countless times that xihe-jun hates gu mang sooo much that he wants to dig his heart out and crush it, but is still desperately in love with him. The fact that xihe-jun can’t understand why gu mang would want to betray his country is crazy. Gu mang is a slave that has only received abuse from his country, of course he would break off and defect, anyone can understand that. The majority of the book consisted of gu mang getting horribly abused and xihe acting arrogant, it honestly got old. I enjoy erha very much but this story missed the mark for me.

I see a lot of potential here, this was a good introductory volume to the story but we still have a lot of questions left unanswered, the characters are interesting but need a lot of personal work so I'm eager to see their growth in the future (2ha had a lot of that so I hope Yuwu does too)

“It was you who gave me faith...and in the end, you were the reason I lost that faith. You said I didn't care about anything, that I had nothing to lose, so it didn't matter. But when you stepped onto that path, do you know what I lost? I was never the person who didn't care. It was you.”

Making my danmei debut thanks to prodding from Kate and Niamh and I can confirm I’m having a great time. To quote Kate “the danmei is danmei-ing”

Genuine question here...: Is it a prerequisite that all danmei authors MUST hurt their characters and readers to no end? Does it come in the contract/career path or something?

Anyway...,
I read a review where the reader compares Gu Mang to Wei Wuxian and something just clicked in my head. I genuinely feel like his story will eventually unfold like WWX's did - the underdog that tried to be happy and good but everyone trampled on his goodness, punished him for it over and over, until they eventually broke him

Mo Xi also feels like Lan Wanji but before (not after) Wei Wuxian's death - Too obsessed and attached to his reputation that it makes him too afraid to actually help out his so-called beloved despite seeing all the shit happening to him. Mo Xi is also a little wrapped up in his own heartbreak and betrayal to see past his own nose - while I get it, I also want to slap him upside his head and tell him to wake up and open his fucking eyes

Other than the intense angst that is this entire story, I really didn't feel connected to the story or the characters. I think my 2 main emotions throughout were anger and frustration - both directed *mostly* to Mo Xi and all the other nobles who dared opened their mouths.

Ps. If there's an offer to skin Murong Lian alive while meticulously adding salt to every new patch of flesh exposed, I'll take it

I'll also add that I read Remnants of Filth as a way to introduce myself to Meat Bun. Unlike 2ha, I hadn't heard much about this story so I thought it'd be 'safe'. Safe in that it doesn't have a long ass list of trigger warnings like 2ha does. I am curious about 2ha but I'm not quite ready to subject myself to all of that
