Now that she's established herself as an estate agent, Mercy Willow finds that she has an unusual ability. Whenever she goes to see a house, she doesn't just meet the living owners. She's also able to see, and talk to, the ghosts that still linger decades and sometimes centuries after their deaths. She's managed to get used to this strange gift, but a house on Sidle Street is about to put her to the ultimate test.
Mercy immediately realizes that the house is haunted. But after meeting the ghost in one of the upstairs rooms, she starts to hear hints of a second presence. For many years, neighbors have reported hearing the cries of a child, and now Mercy finds herself wondering whether this house is hiding a dark secret. When she digs into the street's past, she soon discovers that something awful happened there years ago. Someone – or something – is still waiting for justice.
And revenge.
The Spirit on Sidle Street is the second book in the Mercy Willow series, about an estate agent in deepest Cornwall who develops the unusual ability to communicate with ghosts.
Amy Cross writes novels and short stories in a number of genres, mainly horror, paranormal and fantasy. Books include The Farm, Annie's Room, The Island, Eli's Town and Asylum.
Holy crap this was a fantastic book two!! The plot of this story was truly beautiful and fascinating.i like we got more ghost action in this one it was very enjoyable! The way amy writes her books is just so easy and enjoyable to read. This book had me on edge, guessing what happened next all the way to the end! We also get to see a little more of mercy's past, which I enjoyed! Can't wait to dive into book 3 🫶
I like to read ghost stories (not the real scary ones though! ;-) This one was okay, but not engrossing or especially well written to make me want to read other books by this writer. I do think she needs a proofreader. There were a few missteps that I don't see in successful, professional writers. A little constructive criticism: Page 34 - "Just so long as Jessica says fast asleep." What does that even mean - "stays"? And who is Jessica? (prior book I guess) Pag 77 - "I'm starting to worry that we're on a hiding to nothing here." Again, huh? Page 98 - "Caroline Jacbos" - obviously no spellcheck used. Page 126 - "I won't ever let anyone happen to him." Assume she meant "anything". So, good editor, proofreader and use of spellcheck would have helped this book.
First, the author needs to either sum up the previous book or make it clear in the description that the books need to be read in order. I did not read the first book so there was confusion about some of the story. This story has too many plot holes which made me lose interest in the story. Any reputable realtor would not allow herself to waste her time with the nonsense the current owner and ghosts put her through. As a “ghostbuster” she should be charging for those services. As a character, she lacked any kind of self respect and was not interesting to read about. Although the story started out interesting, I could not wait to be done with it because of the issues I just mentioned.
Another good twisty plot in the Mercy Willow series. Book two deals with a house on Sidle Street where the owner wants to sell but nothing is straightforward...and why is there a baby always crying?
A fast-paced story told in the first-person narrative, though the American spelling and words don't sit right with an English story - rather annoying.
However, I enjoyed the story overall and liked how Mercy's past is slowly being revealed.
No marks for literary talent, but full marks for sheer invention and imagination. Amy can churn out story after story after story, but they all have something wildly original. She's one of my favourite authors, and I hope she never (as unlikely as it seems) runs out of ideas. Ghosts with dementia! Spirits wearing out like old records. Ghosts being the result of loose threads at life's end. Great stuff!
Very interesting story line. Great character s . Is it possible I believe so..Several years ago I started sleeping with 2 nite life's and my bedroom closet had to be closed, Toby my dog as to sleep in his bed in my bedroom.. If I see it and Toby don't move then I know its not there, dutch
Mercy again finds herself confronted with strange happening in a house she has been contracted to sell. There are several twists and turns in this story that make it fun to explore. At the end hints as to what is wrong with Mercy herself peak through. Where why and how did she develop into two totally different people.
I enjoyed this book as I found myself reluctant to put it aside. It was as if I were worried I was missing out! Characters were complete and a couple drew my sympathy for their circumstances. The solution to the mystery surprised me. All in all an enjoyable read.
I found the 2nd book of this series rather boring, it has taken me a month in a half to finish it. I read alot before bed. Most books I read at night I read for a couplea hours n if it's really good all night, not this one though, every time I would start to read it I'd fall asleep after a paragraph
Amy Cross has a wonderful way of writing her characters so clearly, that you really care about what happens to them. Be they of this world or the next, Mercy Willow tries for the happy ending. This series makes me believe in ghosts. Mercy wants the best for them, and the humans trying to cohabitate with them. I love this story.
Mercy Willow is a real estate agent, she also sees ghosts. When walking through a house the owner wants to sell she comes across a problem. Actually a few of them
This second part was ok. It kind of lost it's appeal in the last few chapters! Hopefully the third part will be at least as the first part. I still would recommend the series. I just don't believe it should be in so many parts.
Mercy finds herself in another haunted house to sell. Story of the ghost in this one was pretty good. I'm more interested in the epilogue though. That one really has my interests peeked. Onto book 3. Also loved the crowford shoutout.
I'm absolutely enjoying this series! Lots of scary ghosts and hauntings. This storyline held my interest and I can't wait to get deeper into Mercy's past and personality with what I took to be her other self.
Lots of editing errors. I feel like this author has a lot of great ideas for books, which is why she has so many. However, I feel that is why her books are so full of editing errors. She’s trying to write all the ideas for new books and is not taking the time to properly write them, just in a hurry to write the next. Lots of good ideas. Lots of potential. Just needs to slow down and do some simple editing & spell checks.
